GRETA Played A Key Role In Arrest Of Andrew Tate, But It Is Not Thunberg

As news of controversial media personality Andrew Tate's arrest and Twitter spat with Swedish climate change activist Greta Thunberg made headlines, internet users were quick to point out that it was ultimately GRETA that brought the far-right celebrity to the Romanian authorities' radar.

GRETA, which stands for the Group of Experts on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings, is a European body that monitors the implementation of the Council of Europe Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings by the Parties.

This 15-member body is currently in the spotlight for Andrew Tate's detention, after a year old press release by the group has gone viral. Civil rights attorney and Twitter user Alejandra Caraballo posted a tweet of a screenshot of the Council of Europe website. The screenshot referred to a press release dated June 3, 2021 in which GRETA (the council, not the activist) urged Romania to ensure that human trafficking offences lead to effective sanctions.

Now, a year and half later, Romanian authorities are in the limelight for detaining four people on suspicion of human trafficking, one of which was Andrew Tate.

The irony of an organization named GRETA bringing down Andrew Tate was not lost on netizens, who responded to Caraballo's tweet with memes and laughter. As Twitter user viralsmile remarked, "The writers really did a great job with this 2022 finale".

NASA Pays A Special Tribute To Pele With A Spiral Galaxy Image

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) of the United States paid a heartfelt tribute on Friday to the late Brazilian football legend Pele, who died at the age of 82 and is widely regarded as the greatest and most beloved footballer in history.

The space agency posted a unique picture with the caption, "We mark the passing of the legendary Pele, known to many as the king of the "beautiful game." This image of a spiral galaxy in the constellation Sculptor shows the colours of Brazil."

This proves that he was a hero not only for the entire football fraternity and for scores of fans, not just in Brazil but all over the world, but also for the worlds of science and space.

The space agency described the image as "an image of a spiral galaxy with spiral arms dotted with blue stars of varying intensity."

"The core of the galaxy is brightest, and the stars appear yellow-green. The image was taken by the Galaxy Evolution Explorer satellite, or GALEX," it added.

Pele, a three-time World Cup winner who is widely regarded as the greatest player of all time, died on Thursday at the age of 82, triggering a wave of tributes from the sports world and beyond. His death after a long battle with cancer was caused by "multiple organ failure," the Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo said in a statement, confirming the news from the legend's family.

Accused Throws Stone At Judge In Gujarat Court, She Escapes Unhurt

An accused in an attempt-to- murder case threw a stone at a sessions judge at Navsari in Gujarat during court proceedings on Friday, police said.

Luckily, additional sessions judge A R Desai escaped unhurt as the stone thrown by Dharmesh Rathod, the accused, missed her and hit the wall at the back, Navsari Police said in a statement.

Three police personnel who had escorted Rathod from Lajpore jail in Surat to the Navsari sessions court were suspended for dereliction of duty, said the press release.

A fresh First Information Report (FIR) would be registered against Rathod in connection with the incident, it added.

Rathod is already facing cases of attempt to murder (Indian Penal Code section 307) and 'assault using dangerous weapons' (section 326) among others, said the release.

The police personnel escorting him -- an assistant sub-inspector and two constables -- should have frisked him thoroughly while taking over his custody from the Lajpire jail authority in Surat, it said.

Lawyer Pratap Mahida who witnessed the incident said Rathod had earlier hurled a shoe at a magistrate.

"Police should have taken extra care when they knew his record," said Mahida.

4 Covid Positive Cases Detected From 1,926 Samples At Maharashtra Airports

Four persons have tested positive for coronavirus after samples of 1,926 of the 97,805 passengers who arrived in Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur international airports were examined since December 24, a Maharashtra health department official said on Friday.

This includes an international flyer from Pune who was detected with the infection in a test conducted at the airport there during the day, he added.

The four positive cases detected at these airports comprise two from Pune, one from Navi Mumbai, and one patient from neighbouring Goa, he said.

Samples of all four have been sent for genome sequencing to find out the variant that has caused the coronavirus infection, he said.

The screening of a percentage of travellers arriving at international airports in the state started on December 24 as a precautionary measure against the surge in cases in countries like China, South Korea, Brazil, and the United States of America.

Chinese Woman Caught In Bihar: A Spy Story That Never Was

Mysterious Chinese woman suspected of spying on the Dalai Lama – screamed media outlets in Bihar on the day His Holiness began his annual discourses at Bodh Gaya, returning to the pilgrim town after a gap of two years.

As the word went out that police has released sketches of Song Xiaolan, gaunt and scalp covered with closely cropped hair, along with her passport and visa numbers, headline hunters could have been excused for thinking that they had found something "big".

However, after a thorough investigation, police found that it was a simple case of a lady who had inadvertantly overstayed in the country on an expired visa.

“She has been slapped with a Leave India notice following visa violation. We are going to hand her over to the authorities concerned for repatriation”, said J S Gangwar, Additional Director General of Police (Headquarters), as he sought to ward off queries from journalists who were refusing to believe that it was a case of much ado about nothing.

The Nobel Peace Prize winner, after all, remains a persona non grata in China, a country with which India has along standing border dispute. Security concerns accompany the messenger of peace wherever he goes ever since he escaped Tibet in 1959 after Chinese bloodily put down an uprising in the 'Roof of the World'. His visit to Bodh Gaya a few years ago was marked by a low-intensity blast carried out by a Bangladesh-based terror outfit.

Nonetheless, a statement issued by the Gaya police makes it amply clear that Song was never suspected of espionage, leave alone terrorist activities, though she is evidently not a regular traveller from abroad either, landing on Indian soil for mundane reasons.

According to the Gaya police, the woman was self-willed enough to have fallen in love with spirituality, despite having been born in an avowedly atheist country, and she arrived in the land of the Buddha, way back in October, 2019 and simply forgot that visas are things of the world, governed by laws laid down by nations.

According to the police, she was supposed to have stayed for not more than three months. She, however, has stayed back for more than three years. In the meantime, she briefly visited Nepal, apparently on a spiritual quest, where she befriended a local woman and, with her, returned to India.

The two women, both of whom were picked up by the police from a guest house in Bodh Gaya, have confessed to having settled down in Mc Leodganj, a town in Dharamshala district of Himachal Pradesh, often called a “mini Tibet”, apparently driven by a desire to be close to the Dalai Lama.

They came to Bodh Gaya on December 22, the date on which the Dalai Lama also arrived on his annual retreat, but by the time the police had been sounded off by the foreign department that Xiaolan was a persona non grata.
