Hundreds Of London Cops Likely To Be Sacked For Sexual Offences: Report

Hundreds of officers in London are likely be sacked for sexual and domestic abuse offences, Britain's most senior policeman said on Tuesday as he sought to regain public trust after an officer admitted being a serial rapist.

London's Metropolitan Police ("the Met"), which has been rocked by scandals in recent years, was plunged into further crisis after David Carrick, 48, admitted carrying out 24 counts of rape over almost two decades while serving as a police officer while his colleagues missed chances to stop him.

The case follows a series of revelations of serious wrongdoing at the force, Britain's biggest with more than 43,000 officers and staff and responsibility for leading the country's response to terrorism and issues such as extradition.

London Commissioner Mark Rowley, brought in four months ago to lead the clean-up, said investigations were underway into about 800 officers over 1,000 sexual and domestic abuse claims. Many jobs will be lost as part of the process, he said.

"I've got tens of thousands of fantastic men and women, but I've got hundreds who shouldn't be here. I'm going to sort it out," Mr Rowley told the BBC on Tuesday.

"We're systematically reviewing every member of police staff and police officer who we have any historic flags against, for being involved in incidents involving domestic abuse or sexual violence."

Corruption, racism and misogyny

Public confidence in the Met has been hit by revelations of its culture of corruption, racism and misogyny.

In recent years, one officer was jailed for the rape and murder of a woman he abducted as she walked home and the courts then ruled heavy-handed policing at a vigil in her honour was unlawful.

A serving officer was convicted of being a member of a neo-Nazi group, two more were jailed for sharing pictures from a crime scene after the murder of two sisters, while an inquiry into one unit found discussions about beating women, with one officer messaging a female colleague to say he would rape her.

The Met has been the subject of an independent review since 2021, with initial findings concluding "radical" reform was needed in relation to dealing with allegations of misconduct against officers.

The case of Carrick, one of Britain's most prolific sex offenders who pleaded guilty to 24 counts of rape between 2003 and 2020, prompted questions about the failure to spot what he was doing.

He had previously come to police attention over nine incidents including accusations of harassment, assault and rape between 2000 and 2021 but was not charged with any offence.

Carrick had used his position of power to control and intimidate his victims, telling them no one would believe their word against that of a serving officer.

Study Warns Against Listening To Influencers' Advice On Birth Control

New research has said that social media influencers may be putting people at risk of pregnancy. According to the study published in the journal Health Communication, teenagers and young adults may also be receiving false sexual health information, making many of the popular videos a public health hazard.

Previous studies suggest that influencers are more persuasive and influential than traditional celebrities, due to their relatability and accessibility. Young people see them as being highly trustworthy, with young women saying that influencers can seem like close sisters, ANI reported.

A team of experts from the University of Delaware in the US searched YouTube for videos in which influencers with at least 20,000 followers talked about their experiences of contraception.

The videos were then analyzed to determine the influencers' attitudes to hormonal birth control, including contraceptive pills, injections and implants, and non-hormonal versions, such as fertility tracker apps and condoms.

Findings showed most of the influencers talked about stopping hormonal birth control, with 92 per cent saying they were using it or had used it and 74 per cent saying they'd discontinued or planned to discontinue, it.

The influencers' main reasons for stopping it were the desire to be more natural and to improve their mental health. However, the connection between depression and hormonal birth control is still unclear say the researchers.

Some 40 per cent of the influencers said they were using or had used, non-hormonal birth control, with fertility trackers as the most popular method.

Reasons given for liking non-hormonal birth control included it helping prevent pregnancies, being more natural, having fewer side effects and being cost-effective.

The popularity of fertility trackers is concerning, says lead author Emily Pfender, of the Department of Communication at the University of Delaware – who describes some of the information as “potentially harmful,”.

“Tracking cycles may not be as effective at preventing pregnancy as hormonal birth control,” she says.

“Additionally, what young viewers don't see in influencer content is the amount of effort and meticulous planning that goes into tracking cycles.

“For example, to use the cycle tracking method as intended, women must faithfully measure basal body temperature and viscosity of the cervical fluid at the same time every day, track cycle lengths to calculate their fertile window and refrain from having sex on specific days of their cycle.”

Finally, a few of the influencers who discontinued a hormonal contraceptive said they'd switched to an alternative method. Just 20 per cent had started a non-hormonal contraceptive and 14 per cent had a different hormonal one.

“The discontinuation of hormonal birth control is risky because it increases the likelihood of unplanned pregnancy,” adds Ms Pfender.

“Influencers' videos that discourage the use of a highly effective option for birth control and fail to encourage using other forms of protection to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections are a public health issue.”

Limitations of the study include a lack of information about who is watching the videos, whether some age groups find them more persuasive than others and if the keywords used to search for the videos picked up all the relevant examples.

The authors conclude that while social media can be a valuable source of information, young people should treat influencers' advice about contraception with caution.

“Getting sexual health information from social media allows young adults to get peer perspectives and seek out relatable information,” says Ms Pfender, “It is an especially good way for underrepresented groups such as LGBTQ+ young adults to get tailored sexual health information.

“It is important, however, that young people critically evaluate the health information they receive on social media and the source of the information.

“They should be sceptical of taking a one-size-fits-all approach to health based on the information we find online.”

Change Public Building To Gurudwara: Sikh Group's Application In UK

A representative from the Sikh temple Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara has lodged an application with Telford and Wrekin Council in the UK to change Abbey House in Priorslee to a place of worship.

An application has been moved to the council for consideration to change the Priorslee building on Whitechapel Way, which was until two years ago leased by the council to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), into a Sikh Gurudwara, Shropshire Star newspaper reported.

The current gurdwara for worshippers on Church Parade in Oakengates is currently up for sale and covers 6,573 sq ft, less than a quarter of the size of Abbey House built in 1990 and providing 28,886 sq ft of space.

In the application, Sikh representative Inderjit Singh Gill, said: "The intention is to use this building as a place of worship for the Sikh Community in Shropshire and surrounding areas.

"There will be a priest living on-site, a kitchen, and community facilities for worship and improvement of well-being," Gill said.

The application has, however, attracted over a dozen objections from within the Sikh community as some members of the current gurdwara in Oakengates, slamming the move, said they wanted to stay put.

"The one in Oakengates is fully sustainable and has been for many years. It's taken over 30 years of hard work," Sukhjit Singh said.

"The current property is freehold and the new proposed property is only a leasehold which will cost so much to run, it is our family temple that we have used since being born -- we do not want it to get shut or moved," he added.

Others spoke of the cost of living crisis, traffic as well as transportation issues.

Mohinder Kaur, a female protestor, said: "I have been attending Oakengates Gurdwara for the last 30 years plus, which is nearer for me with public transport. I'm elderly and I feel I will not be able to attend the new place of worship."
