Imran Khan Gets Luxury Tax Notice Worth Lakhs For Lahore House

Pakistan's former premier Imran Khan received on Monday a luxury tax notice of PKR 14 lakh for his Lahore residence from the Punjab provincial government, media reports said.

The challan issued by the Department of Excise and Taxation to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief for the payment of Rs 14,40,000 for his Zaman Park residence, where he currently resides, is to be paid by Monday when the last date to submit it was May 12. Geo News reported Imran Khan submitted a record of the house sought from him last month, the provincial tax collecting authority said, and after estimation, a luxury tax challan was sent to the cricketer-turned-politician, who received the notice.

According to the report, Imran Khan has filed his tax regularly but will be sent another notice as per the law if he fails to do it this time.

The PTI chief's old house in Zaman Park was demolished, and a new one was constructed in its place, owned by him and his sisters, the report said.

Last month, the department issued a notice to the 70-year-old politician's mother, the late Shaukat Khanum, to assess the luxury house tax, which directed Imran Khan to clear arrears under the luxury tax amounting to Rs 36 lakh.

The property continues to be in Khanum's name, who passed away in 1985, the report said.

Rejecting the element of political victimisation, an Excise Officer, Adeel Amjid, said that the department decided to go through an assessment of all luxury homes of two or more than two Kanals (around 1,012 sq metre).

Imrtan Khan, the cricketer-turned-politician, was ousted from power in April last year after losing a no-confidence vote in his leadership, which he alleged was part of a US-led conspiracy targeting him because of his independent foreign policy decisions on Russia, China and Afghanistan.

Athlete Rejected For Sporting Tattoo, Delhi High Court Orders Retest

The Delhi High Court has asked authorities to re-conduct the medical examination of a woman athlete who was earlier declared unfit on account of a tattoo with scar over the right forearm and hand for the post of CRPF head constable under the sports quota for weightlifting.

A bench of Justices Suresh Kumar Kait and Mini Pushkarna directed that the petitioner, who was already a constable in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and has claimed that the tattoo has now been removed, be examined by a freshly-constituted medical board within four weeks and if found fit, be allowed to join the further selection process.

The petitioner, Davinder Kaur, had participated in the process of recruitment for the post of head constable or GD under the sports quota in the category of weightlifting (59 kg), but was declared unfit earlier this year due to the tattoo on her right arm.

Her lawyer, K K Sharma, told the court that the tattoo has been removed and that she should be given an opportunity to participate in the examination.

"Accordingly, in the interest of justice, we hereby direct the respondents to examine the petitioner afresh before the freshly-constituted medical board of the respondents within four weeks from today and if the petitioner is found fit by the said medical board, she shall be allowed to join the further selection process," the court said in an order passed earlier this month.

It clarified that if the petitioner is found unfit, the decision shall be final and binding.

In her petition, the petitioner has said she joined CRPF as a constable or GD under the sports quota (weightlifting, 59-kg category) and has been a well-known weightlifter for the force.

"Since joining the force, she has been regularly playing for the CRPF and has won several medals for the force in the weight category of 59 kg. She has also represented India in the 2019 Commonwealth Senior Weightlifting Championship held at Apia, Samoa from July 6-15, 2019," the petition said.

After CBI Questioning, Abhishek Banerjee's "Mega Comeback"

Senior TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee on Monday resumed his mass outreach campaign from Bankura district in West Bengal, which was suspended for two days after he was summoned by CBI in connection with the teacher recruitment scam last week.

Abhishek Banerjee on Friday, while returning to Kolkata after being summoned to the CBI office in the city for questioning on May 20, had announced that he would resume the campaign "Trinamool-e Nabojowar" (new wave in Trinamool) from Monday.

"Mega comeback! On Day 26 of #JonoSanjogYatra, Shri @abhishekaitc led a massive roadshow in Kotulpur, surrounded by love and support. Motivated by people's belief in #TrinamooleNaboJowar and with our heads held high, the journey of grassroots empowerment continues," the TMC tweeted.

Without naming anyone, the party, in an apparent reference to BJP and CBI summons, said the tactics to scare the party won't deter the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress.

"Their scare tactics can't deter us! Terrified of people's growing support for Shri @abhishekaitc-led #TrinamooleNaboJowar, they tried to derail #JonoSanjogYatra. 'Unfortunately' for them, all in vain. With people's love, we are coming back stronger than ever," it said.

Unlike other days, the TMC national general secretary did not address any rallies on Monday. Instead, he conducted two marches as part of the mass connect programme at Indus and Kotulpur areas in the tribal-dominated Bankura district and spoke to common people.

Party supporters gathered on both sides of the road cheered, as he waved. At times, he also shook hands with them.

According to party sources, the Diamond Harbour MP is likely to speak at a convention in the district late on Monday night.

Leading the mass outreach programme organised ahead of the panchayat elections from the front, Abhishek Banerjee is crisscrossing the entire state starting from Cooch Behar district on April 25. He is seeking feedback from the common people on their preferable candidates, whom the party will nominate in the polls.

The CBI officers had questioned Abhishek Banerjee, considered number two in the party, for more than nine hours on Saturday.

Abhishek Banerjee had told newspersons that the questioning was a waste of time for both him and the investigative agency's officers but that he "cooperated in all that was asked".

Indian-Origin Woman Jailed For Role In Drugs Supply Conspiracy In UK

A 41-year-old Indian-origin woman has been sentenced to four years and eight months imprisonment by a UK court for her role in a large-scale conspiracy to supply drugs in the country.

Mandeep Kaur, from north London, was found guilty by a majority jury of conspiracy to supply Class A or banned drugs and a unanimous jury of conspiracy to possess criminal property at Aylesbury Crown Court, sitting at Amersham, following a two-week trial.

Mandeep Kaur was sentenced last week following an investigation by the South East Regional Organised Crime Unit (SEROCU), which works across different police forces in Britain.

The unit uncovered that Mandeep Kaur was involved in activities as a money and drugs courier for a Buckinghamshire-based organised crime group (OCG). She was found to have undertaken a number of journeys for a criminal group who were responsible for supplying cocaine across the UK.

"Kaur's involvement in the OCG, in this case, was significant. She willingly delivered and collected criminal money under instruction from a senior member of the group," said Detective Constable Dale Lester, Investigating officer from SEROCU.

"On one occasion, she went one step further and moved a kilo of cocaine - acts she decided to do of her own free will for financial gain. This conviction is a demonstration of SEROCU's ongoing commitment to tackling and dismantling organised crime across the South East and further afield," he said.

During the trial, Mandeep Kaur was found to have delivered a kilogram of cocaine on June 13, 2020, and was arrested three days later and was in possession of a bag containing 50,000 pounds in cash.
