The home of Rihanna, a Barbadian singer and actress, has been in the news again for another wrong reason. A car belonging to the driver of the famous singer has been stolen from her Beverly Hills mansion.
The law enforcement officers said that the driver left the car engine running while leaving it outside the house and went inside to get something, when he returned, the vehicle had been stolen. The car was a 2012 Audi sedan that was worth around Rs 30,38,442 ($37,000).
According to a TMZ report, the driver believes someone just jumped in and took off with it immediately when he went inside the house. It's unclear if Rihanna was home at the time of the incident.

This was the second time in a week that Rihanna's Beverly Hills home became the focus of a significant police operation. A few days ago, an unidentified man who had travelled from South Carolina to Los Angeles was arrested for trespassing on her property around 12.30pm. He travelled the long distance just to propose to the R&B star before his plans were squashed by her security staff.
The cops were called by the on-site security personnel. The man was taken from the property in handcuffs. He was taken into custody by law enforcement for a while before they released him because he had not broken any laws. He was warned not to commit the offence again. It's unclear whether Rihanna, her boyfriend A$AP Rocky, or their one-year-old son were at home at the time of the incident.

Not Against Siddaramaiah. BS Yediyurappa Says Son Will Contest From...
BY Vijayendra, the son of former Karnataka Chief Minister and BJP leader BS Yediyurappa, will contest from the same seat where his father had won seven times since 1983 and not from the seat where state Congress chief Siddaramaiah will contest.
Announcing this today, Mr Yediyurappa said his son won't fight the assembly election from Varuna against the Congress chief, but from Shikaripura.
"There is no question of Vijayendra contesting from Varuna for whatsoever reason," Mr Yediyurappa told reporters, adding his son will contest from "my constituency" in Shivamogga district.
Mr Yediyurappa on Thursday indicated his son may contest against Siddaramaiah, leading to speculation of a huge battle on the constituency currently held by the Congress leader's son, Yathindra Siddaramaiah.
The former Chief Minister recently announced he would no longer contest elections, a decision that paved the way for his son's attempt at getting elected.
Mr Vijayendra has said he will respect the party high command's decision on the BJP's Karnataka BJP battle plan. However, his father, while agreeing with the decision to stick with the high command's plan, said he will tell the central BJP leadership about Mr Vijayendra's choice of Shikaripura to contest from.
"His statement (on the party leadership's decision) is correct, but I am saying that he will contest from Shikaripura. I will convey this to the party high command and Vijayendra. There is no question of him contesting from Varuna in Mysuru." said Mr Yediyurappa.
Before entering politics, Mr Vijayendra had a short stint as a lawyer. He has served as the general secretary of the BJP's youth wing, the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha.
The Karnataka assembly election will be held on May 10. Votes will be counted on May 13.

Assam Woman Raped By Friend Inside Car In Gurugram: Cops
A 34-year-old woman from Assam was allegedly raped by a "friend" in a car near Hero Honda chowk here, police said on Thursday.
According to the woman, a private firm employee, she was in touch with the accused, Sandeep, for the past few days and had been talking to him on the phone.
On Monday, when she left her Sector 37 office, Sandeep, 40, offered to pick her up from Hero Honda chowk, police said.
"I sat in his car and after talking for some time, he raped me in the car and also threatened to kill me," the woman said in her complaint, according to police.
Following her complaint, Sandeep, a resident of Jhajjar, was booked under sections 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC at Sector 37 Police Station on Wednesday and arrested on Thursday.

"Backdoor Tactics For Hindi Imposition": HD Kumaraswamy On Curd Label Row
Former Karnataka Chief Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) leader HD Kumaraswamy has objected to the use of word 'dahi' being used on packets of Nandini curd sold in the State and that Hindi should not be imposed on a product manufactured in Karnataka.
HD Kumaraswamy said that "back-door tactics" of imposing Hindi cannot be accepted.
Mr Kumaraswamy in a series of tweets said "Knowing that Kannadigas are against the imposition of Hindi, it is wrong for the Food Safety and Quality Authority of India to ask Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) to print Hindi 'dahi' on the Nandini Probiotic yoghurt pocket."
"Nandini is the asset of the Kannadigas, the identity of the Kannadigas and the lifeline of the Kannadigas. Despite knowing this, the ego of Hindi imposition has been shown. Earlier Union Home Minister Amit Shah said in a meeting in Mandya that he would merge Nandini with Gujarat's Amul. Is Hindi word typing the beginning of Nandini hijacking?," he asked in his tweets.
Mr Kumaraswamy also condemned Shah's statement, "I was against it. The BJP government, which was silent then, has now insulted the self-esteem of Kannadigas by adding curd to the back door through the Food Safety Authority. Is this a show of the BJP's power over Kannadigas?"
He also added, "It is a big mistake by KMF to print the word Dahi against the sentiments of six and a half crore Kannadigas."
This, the former chief minister said has not gone unnoticed by the state BJP government.
"... Here Hindi is directly imposed, not through the back door. It has been quietly accepted by the double-engine BJP government and its puppet KMF. This is anti-Kannada work. Dahi pada printing should be stopped immediately," the JD(S) leader tweeted.
"Janata Dal secular activists drew my attention to the matter by garlanding curd and milk saying 'Save Nandini' during the Pancharat Rath Yatra in Yashwantpur", Kumaraswamy said.

300 Covid Cases In 24 Hours In Delhi For The First Time Since September
Delhi's COVID-19 cases climbed to 300 on Wednesday for the first time since September last year, while the positivity rate climbed to 13.89 per cent, according to data shared by the city health department. Two more Covid-related deaths were also reported, it said.
On Tuesday, Delhi logged 214 cases with a positivity rate of 11.82 per cent. Delhi recorded 115 fresh coronavirus cases with a positivity rate of 7.45 per cent on Monday.
The city logged 153 cases with a positivity rate of 9.13 per cent on Sunday and 139 cases with a positivity rate of 4.98 per cent on Saturday.
It saw 152 cases with a positivity rate of 6.66 per cent on Friday and 117 cases with a positivity rate of 4.95 per cent on Thursday.
Delhi has witnessed an increase in the number of fresh Covid cases over the last few days amid a sharp rise in the figure of H3N2 influenza cases in the country.
The number of fresh cases had seen a decline over the last few months in Delhi. It had dropped to zero on January 16, the first time since the pandemic broke out.
With the fresh cases, Delhi's COVID-19 tally has increased to 20,09,361, while the death count due to the viral infection stands at 26,526.
The data also showed that 2,160 Covid tests were conducted on Tuesday.
Fifty-four of the 7,986 beds are occupied in the dedicated COVID-19 hospitals in the city, while 452 patients are in home isolation, the health department said.
The number of active cases of the infection currently stands at 806, it added.
Amid a gradual increase in the number of Covid cases in Delhi, medical experts say the new XBB.1.16 variant of the virus could be driving the surge.
However, they maintain that there is no need to panic and people should follow Covid-appropriate behaviour and get booster shots of the vaccines.
They also say this rise in the number of cases could be a result of more people getting themselves tested for Covid as a precaution when they actually get infected with the influenza virus and develop fever and related symptoms.
Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj had said there were not many influenza cases in the city hospitals and the situation was being monitored closely.
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has said the rise in the number of influenza cases is due to the Influenza A sub-type H3N2 virus.
The H3N2 virus is leading to more hospitalisations than the other sub-types. The symptoms include a runny nose, persistent cough and fever.

Delhi Woman's Throat Slit Due To Chinese Kite String, Case Filed: Police
A 36-year-old woman was hospitalised after her throat was slit due to a 'maanjha', or kite string, in northeast Delhi's Shastri Park area, police said on Wednesday.
The incident took place Tuesday when the woman, a Delhi Metro Rail Corporation employee, was returning home on her scooter, they said.
A senior police officer said that Shastri Park Police Station received information at 8.20 pm from Sant Parmanand Hospital that Vinki Bhardwaj, a resident of Vasundhara in Ghaziabad, UP, had her throat cut by a maanjha near Shastri Park flyover.
She was rushed to Max Hospital, Vasundhara, where her condition was stated to be stable.
A case under sections 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code was registered on Wednesday at Shastri Park Police Station and investigation is in progress, the officer said.
On August 11 last year, a 34-year-old man died in Shastri Park area in a similar incident when he was on his way to celebrate Raksha Bandhan at his in-laws' house in Loni.
In another incident, Vipin Kumar, a resident of Rajdhani Park in Mundka, was injured when he was on a motorcycle with his wife and daughter. On Shastri Park Flyover on the ISBT- Seelampur road, he drove into a stray 'Chinese maanjha' which sliced his neck.
On August 14, 26-year-old businessman Abhishek Kumar died after his throat was slit by a 'Chinese manjha' in Shahdara's Mansarovar Park area. Kumar ran a tent business.
He was on his way home on a scooter when a stray kite got stuck around his neck.
Four people were killed in a similar manner last year till August 14, according to police.
In 2017, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) banned Chinese maanjha in the national capital terming it dangerous for animals and human beings and also citing its being a good conductor of electricity.

Arvind Kejriwal's Party's Grievance As Karnataka Poll Dates Announced
The AAP on Wednesday demanded that the Election Commission recognise it as a national party "immediately" and ensure it gets all the “facilities” during the Karnataka Assembly polls a national party is entitled to.
The poll panel said earlier in the day it was looking into the issue of granting national status to the Aam Aadmi Party.
"The Election Commission announced the schedule for Karnataka elections today but we have a grievance with it," AAP Rajya Sabha MP and national spokesperson Sanjay Singh said at a press conference.
He lamented that the poll panel has not yet taken any decision on the matter even after the AAP fulfilled the conditions required to be declared a national party with its performance in Punjab, Gujarat and Goa polls last year.
"Election Commission has not officially given national party status to AAP despite the party ruling Delhi and Punjab and has two MLAs with over 6 per cent vote share in Goa. The party also has five MLAs in Gujarat where it secured about 14 per cent vote share in the assembly polls last year,” Mr Singh said.
“Even a class 10 student would give you the answer if you ask whether the AAP should get national status or not as per rules,” he said, adding, “I don't know what the Election Commission is doing”.
“I urge the Election Commission to immediately give AAP a national party status and also ensure that we get all facilities in Karnataka polls that any national party is entitled to,” Mr Singh said.
Mr Singh claimed that the Election Commission had assured him at an all-party meeting that a decision will be taken on AAP's request soon.
"At the meeting, I asked in the presence of the chief election commissioner when we will have national party status. He said a decision was going to be taken very soon and that AAP will be given national party status,” Mr Singh claimed.
The AAP leader said the party has submitted a request for this to the poll panel even though it was not required.
"The Election Commission should have taken a decision on its own. There was no need to file any application in this regard but we did and it is pending with the Election Commission,” he added.

"Person Born To A Foreigner Mother Can Never...": BJP MP's Jibe At Gandhis
BJP MP Sanjay Jaiswal today courted controversy with a personal attack on the Gandhi family, while protesting against Rahul Gandhi's controversial remark on the Modi surname.
"A person born to a foreigner mother can never be a patriot," Mr Jaiswal told NDTV, and claimed those were Chanakya's words from 2,000 years ago which he was reminded of today.
Pragya Singh Thakur, BJP MP from Bhopal, made the same remark earlier this month. She said that Rahul should not be allowed to do politics in the country and should be thrown out of India. She also said that they agree that Rahul Gandhi is not from India. "We know you are not from India...Chanyakka said that a son born of a foreigner mother can never be a patriot and Rahul Gandhi has proved it right," she said on March 11.
Rahul Gandhi has insulted the country abroad, Mr Jaiswal further said, referring to his comments on Indian democracy in London, adding that "it's obvious" that you don't trust India if you say that our democracy, courts, and journalists are all wrong.
He called the former Wayanad MP a "habitual offender".
"He is upset with PM Modi because he considered himself a prince, and the PM has been forming a majority government since the last two terms," Mr Jaiswal said.
Escalating its attack on Rahul Gandhi for his controversial remark on the Modi surname, the BJP today held a protest demonstration at the Gandhi statue in the Parliament. The ruling party's MPs, who have accused Mr Gandhi of insulting Other Backward Classes (OBC) by calling them thieves, demanded that he apologise to the entire nation.
Sanjay Jaiswal accused Mr Gandhi of derogatory speech against marginalised communities, and claimed he will have to face the anger of the OBCs wherever he goes.
The court had given him an opportunity, he could have apologised. He could have said in the court that his remark referred only to Nirav Modi and Lalit Modi, but he intentionally didn't do that to spin it as a sacrifice. The country is watching," Mr Jaiswal said.
The BJP today released a poster and pamphlet for its OBC campaign that is to start from April 6. Party president JP Nadda will launch it from Haryana's Manesar.
"BJP president JP Nadda will launch the OBC campaign, Ghar Ghar Chalo, Gaon Gaon Chalo, from Manesar. It will reach 1 crore villages from April 6, BJP's foundation day, till April 14, BR Ambedkar's jayanti. Party will also celebrate Jyotiba Phule anniversary in between on April 11. We will compare what PM Modi did for OBCs and what the UPA did for them, and how congress has only undermined their interests," BJP MP K Laxman, OBC morcha head of the party, said.
OBC MPs will also have dinner and discussion with JP Nadda tomorrow at 6:30 in Delhi, sources said.
Earlier today, Union Minister Smriti Irani tore into Rahul Gandhi, saying he "pretends today not to be coward".
"He (Rahul Gandhi) abused and accused PM Modi in Parliament, but could not verify his own statement by authenticating it with his own signature. He is the man who apologised to the Supreme Court and pretends today not to be a coward. Rahul Gandhi has been convicted by the court, for not abusing an individual, but the OBC community is known to every citizen of our country," she said.
In 2019 May, Rahul Gandhi had tendered an unconditional apology in the Supreme Court for his 'Chowkidar Chor hai' jibe against Prime Minister Modi.
"This is not the first time Gandhi family has tried to insult people from Dalit or backward communities. Rahul Gandhi could not develop the humility to beg the forgiveness of the OBC community in our country is just another manifestation of the political arrogance called the Gandhi family. When a woman from the tribal family became the President, even then Droupadi Murmu was insulted by a Congress member on the instructions of the Gandhi family," the Minister added.
In a rare show of strength, Opposition parties had marched from the Parliament complex to Vijay Chowk on Monday against the Centre over the Adani issue and Rahul Gandhi's disqualification.

Police Crack Down On Congress Protest At Red Fort, Leaders Detained
The Delhi police cracked down on a Congress protest held near the Red Fort this evening against the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi from parliament. Many of the MPs, including former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat, have been detained.
Visuals from the spot showed slogan-shouting leaders being taken away in police vehicles. Sources said the Delhi Police had denied permission for the protest.
The Congress has announced a month-long protest programme over the disqualification of Mr Gandhi after he was found guilty and sentenced to two years in prison in a defamation case from 2019 last week.
In the campaign ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Mr Gandhi had apparently said, "How come all thieves have the common surname Modi?"
The Gujarat court, which sentenced him to two years in jail, also granted him bail and suspended the sentence. On Friday, he was formally disqualified by Lok Sabha.
Yesterday, the Congress held a "black" protest in parliament, in which they were joined by members of several other opposition parties including the Trinamool Congress and Telangana's ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi.
The month-long protest programme was announced later in the evening following a meeting between the Congress and 16 Opposition parties. The dinner meet was held at the home of party chief Mallikarjun Kharge.

Ahead Of Biden's Visit, UK Raises Terror Threat Level In North Ireland
The UK government Tuesday raised the terrorism threat level in Northern Ireland to "severe", ahead of an expected visit by US President Joe Biden to mark the 25th anniversary of a landmark peace accord.
The domestic spy agency MI5 now judged that the threat of an attack had gone from "substantial" to "severe", meaning an incident is judged "highly likely", Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Heaton-Harris said.
After suffering three decades of bloody unrest, Northern Ireland stands transformed since the Good Friday Agreement was adopted on April 10, 1998.
"However, a small number of people remain determined to cause harm to our communities through acts of politically motivated violence," Heaton-Harris told parliament.
He urged the public to "remain vigilant, but not be alarmed" at the announcement, which comes after a police officer was shot and seriously wounded in front of his son.
Heaton-Harris drew no link to the planned trip by Biden, who intends to visit Ireland and Northern Ireland.
The trip is expected to take in the anniversary of the peace deal, which was brokered with US mediation.
The anniversary comes with the territory locked in political paralysis, as pro-UK unionists refuse to re-enter government in objection to a post-Brexit trade deal agreed by London and the European Union.
More extreme militants in the pro-UK camp have issued periodic warnings about the consequences of the deal, which they argue leaves Northern Ireland at risk of political and economic divorce from Great Britain.
But Heaton-Harris said that sustained bloodshed was a thing of the past.
"The political future of Northern Ireland rests with the democratic will of the people and not the violent actions of the few," he said.
"Together we will ensure there is no return to the violence of the past."

Congress Skips Key Meet With Election Commission On Assam Delimitation
The opposition Congress in Assam skipped a key meeting alleging the Election Commission did not reply to its appeal on a meeting on district boundary irregularities. The Congress said the EC gave very less time to the party and alleged the meeting had a "predetermined objective."
The EC has once again sent an invite to the Congress for a meeting tomorrow before the full team leaves for Delhi from Guwahati.
Ahead of the delimitation of constituencies in Assam, the full team of the EC led by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar arrived in Guwahati on Sunday on a three-day visit for holding consultations with stakeholders, including political parties and civil societies.
"The Assam Congress had earlier met the EC in Delhi and asked them about the clarifications and the irregularities regarding district political boundaries. They told us they will meet our queries and we then gave them a reminder. We are waiting for a reply," Congress MLA and Assam Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia said.
"Now they are only giving 10-15 minutes and we don't think meeting them will be of any useful," Mr Saikia said.
EC sources said they have already given time to the Congress delegation ahead of everyone else at the very beginning in Delhi on January 4.
The Congress again sought time from the EC on March 22 for a meeting to which the EC replied that since it would visit Assam in the coming days, they will meet the Congress delegation in Guwahati.
"Individual response is not a practice and, in any case, cannot be given in connection to the delimitation exercise without hearing all the stakeholders," a senior EC official said.
"Responding to the EC's invitation, 10 recognised national and state political parties and 76 civil society organisations, public representatives and non-recognised political parties met the EC in Guwahati today," the official said.
Other opposition parties AIUDF and Trinamool Congress in their closed-door meetings with the EC have raised objections about the process, including the Assam National Register of Citizens (NRC), the timing of the delimitation exercise ahead of the 2024 general election and apprehensions that it might alter boundaries of Muslim-majority constituencies.
"Delimitation was on hold since the NRC was not completed and all political parties had that time taken a consensus. Even now the situation remains the same as Assam NRC is not final. It has not been notified, so we don't know if the 19 lakh people left out from the NRC will figure in the voters' list or not," Assam Trinamool Congress chief Ripun Bora said.
The delimitation exercise for redrawing the territorial boundaries of the assembly and parliamentary constituencies of Assam, based on the 2001 census, had been stuck for 14 years. The last delimitation in Assam was done in 1976.
"The intention of the government is not clear. The entire country will have delimitation in 2026. So why is Assam having it now? We feel there is a conspiracy against some communities so that they don't have proper representation in parliament and assembly," said AIUDF general secretary Aminul Islam.
The ruling BJP has hit back at the opposition parties.
"There have been delimitation in the past as well. This delimitation process is long due, so we welcome the process and the EC initiative to come here and hold consultations. The opposition is trying to make an issue because they have nothing against the government as the government's performance is very good. There was delimitation during the Congress regime as well. It is not a new process," Assam BJP spokesperson Rupam Goswami said.

2 Killed, Dozens Injured In Russian Shelling Of Ukraine's Sloviansk
Russian shelling of the eastern Ukraine town of Sloviansk on Monday killed at least two people and wounded more than two dozen others, authorities said.
"As of 13:00, there are two dead and 29 wounded in Sloviansk," Donetsk region governor Pavlo Kyrylenko said on Facebook.
He added that "administrative and office buildings, five high-rise buildings and seven private houses were damaged" in the attack.
"(Russian forces) struck the city centre around 10:30 (0730 GMT) with two S-300 missiles," he added.
Mr Kyrylenko also said that another town in Donetsk region, Druzhkivka, was targeted by an attack.
"Two S-300 missiles hit the Druzhkivka orphanage and almost completely destroyed it," he said, adding that according to initial information there were no casualties.
"Another day that began with terrorism by the Russian Federation. The aggressor state shelled our Sloviansk," Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky said on social media.
"The enemy must know: Ukraine will not forgive the torturing of our people, will not forgive these deaths and wounds," he added.
Russian forces have made the capture of the Donetsk region their main military priority and claimed to have annexed the region last year despite not fully controlling it.

Youth Congress Chief Arrested For Stopping Train During Protest In Bhopal
Madhya Pradesh Youth Congress president Vikrant Bhuria was on Sunday arrested for leading a protest against the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi as Lok Sabha MP by stopping a train at Kamlapati railway station in Bhopal, a police official said.
Mr Bhuria was arrested from his residence at Gopal Colony in Jhabua after he was charged under Indian Penal Code and Railway Act for stopping the Dakshin Express on Friday, Bhopal railway police inspector Nitin Patel told reporters.
Mr Bhuria, who is the son of MLA and former Union minister Kantilal Bhuria, was taken away while a crowd of Congress supporters shouted slogans in his support.
On Thursday, a Surat court sentenced Gandhi to two years in jail in a criminal defamation case over his Modi surname and thieves remark, and his disqualification notice was issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat a day later.
Meanwhile, the Congress held protests in several parts of MP on Sunday during its 'Sankalp Satyagrah' stir against Gandhi's disqualification.

Apple To Take Action Against Staff Who Don't Come To Office 3 Days A Week: Report
Apple has threatened to fire employees who do not come to work at least three days a week, according to Platformer's Managing Editor Zo Schiffer. "Apple is tracking employee attendance (via badge records) and will give employees escalating warnings if they don't come in 3x per week," she said in a tweet.
"At Apple, some orgs are saying failure to comply could result in termination, but that doesn't appear to be a company-wide policy," Ms Schiffer added.
At Apple, some orgs are saying failure to comply could result in termination, but that doesn't appear to be a company-wide policy.
— Zoë Schiffer (@ZoeSchiffer) March 22, 2023
It is to be noted that Apple's monitoring of badge data appears to go against the company's assertion that it is concerned with preserving consumers' privacy and data.
According to Fortune, in March 2022, the company made the first request for employees to return, although for just one day each week. "For many of you, I know that returning to the office represents a long-awaited milestone and a positive sign that we can engage more fully with the colleagues who play such an important role in our lives," Apple CEO Tim Cook wrote in a memo at that time.
"For others, it may also be an unsettling change. I want you to know that we are deeply committed to giving you the support and flexibility that you need in this next phase," he added.
However, the directive brought a wave of unrest among the workforce. In another attempt, the tech giant declared that starting September 5, 2022, all employees would need to come three days per week in the office. The team leaders would choose the third day, while the first two days had to be Tuesday and Thursday. Employees did not feel at ease with that either. In opposition to the requirement to work in person, more than 1,200 Apple employees signed the "Apple Together" petition last summer, claiming that they have performed "exceptional work" from their homes throughout the pandemic.
"We believe that Apple should encourage, not prohibit, flexible work to build a more diverse and successful company where we can feel comfortable to 'think different' together," they wrote.

Etihad Airways To Start Direct Flights Between Kolkata-Abu Dhabi From Tomorrow
Etihad Airways will resume flight services between Kolkata and Abu Dhabi on Sunday, the airlines said. The flights, to be available every day, will be operated with an Airbus A320 aircraft, offering eight seats in business class and 150 in economy class, it said.
With the recommencement of services to Kolkata, Etihad will now fly to 14 destinations across the region -- India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Maldives, it added.
The aircraft will depart Abu Dhabi at 9.10 pm local time, and land in Kolkata at 3.30 am. It will take off from Kolkata at 4.35 am, and reach the UAE capital at 8.15 am local time.
"Our return to Kolkata will come at the same time as we go double daily to New York, providing better access between India and the United States via Abu Dhabi, where our guests can take advantage of our US preclearance facility for a seamless arrival into the States," said Martin Drew, the senior vice-president of global sales and cargo at Etihad.
Last week, low-cost carrier Air Arabia launched its services between Kolkata and Abu Dhabi, flying three days a week. It is also operating an Airbus A320.
Etihad Airways had stopped its services between Kolkata and Abu Dhabi following the COVID-19 outbreak. Kolkata has direct flights to two other west Asian destinations, Dubai and Doha.

Traffic Cop Assaults Woman At Private Hostel In Chhattisgarh, Suspended
A traffic policeman was today suspended for allegedly assaulting and abusing a woman staffer of a private hostel in Chhattisgarh's Raipur city, police said.
The incident, which was captured by CCTV cameras, took place at a women's hostel in Ganj police station area on Friday afternoon, an official said.
Following the attack, the victim and the hostel owner approached senior police officials and Raipur Senior Superintendent of Police Prashant Agrawal took notice of the issue and suspended the traffic police inspector with immediate effect, he said.
As per the suspension order, the woman has alleged that the inspector had reached the hostel and abused and thrashed her.

"From Great To Mind-Blowingly Spectacular": Aurora Over US Leaves Twitter Mesmerised
A large hole in the sun's corona caused a strong geomagnetic storm that seriously damaged the Earth's magnetic field. This incident served as the catalyst for the magnificent Northern Lights display, which travelled to the US and was witnessed by millions of people.
Many states in the United States reported seeing the aurora borealis' dancing green brilliance.
Photos and videos of the aurora borealis started to flood the timelines of millions of social media users. Several accounts shared the visual shots by themselves.

Experts claim that the location of the oxygen and nitrogen in the atmosphere determines the colours visible in the sky. Nitrogen and oxygen are the main sources of green, red, and blue, respectively.
What Exactly Is an Aurora, and What Causes This to Occur?
According to NASA, if you're ever near the North or South Pole, you may be in for a very special treat. Frequently there are beautiful light shows in the sky. These lights are called auroras. If you're near the North Pole, it is called an aurora borealis or northern lights. If you're near the South Pole, it is called an aurora australis, or the southern lights.
Auroras are actually caused by the Sun. The Sun sends us more than heat and light; it sends lots of other energy and small particles our way. The protective magnetic field around Earth shields us from most of the energy and particles, and we don't even notice them.
But the sun doesn't send the same amount of energy all the time. There is a constant stream of solar wind, and there are also solar storms. During one kind of solar storm called a coronal mass ejection, the sun burps out a huge bubble of electrified gas that can travel through space at high speeds.
When a solar storm comes toward us, some of the energy and small particles can travel down the magnetic field lines at the north and south poles and into Earth's atmosphere. There, the particles interact with gases in our atmosphere, resulting in beautiful displays of light in the sky. Oxygen gives off green and red light. Nitrogen glows blue and purple.

Tejashwi Yadav Appears Before CBI For Questioning Over Land-For-Jobs Scam
Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav appeared before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Delhi today to be interrogated in connection with the alleged land-for-jobs scam, after skipping three previous dates, officials said.
Upon his arrival at the CBI headquarters at around 10:30 am, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader was escorted to the investigation team after the completion of the necessary formalities.
The CBI had given an assurance to the Delhi High Court last week that it would not arrest Mr Yadav this month.
According to the RJD leader's counsel, Maninder Singh, Mr Yadav had conveyed to the federal agency that he would require some time to appear before its sleuths as the ongoing Bihar Assembly session is scheduled to conclude on April 5.
Mr Singh had also told the court that Mr Yadav would appear before the investigating officer at the CBI headquarters in Delhi at 10:30 am on March 25.
CBI's counsel DP Singh had told the court that the Assembly is not convened on Saturdays and Mr Yadav could appear before the agency on any Saturday in March according to his convenience. The RJD leader had sought quashing of the summonses dated February 28, March 4 and March 11 issued against him.
On March 15, a special CBI court granted bail to Mr Yadav's father Lalu Prasad, mother Rabri Devi -- both former Bihar chief ministers -- sister Misa Bharti and others in the land-for-jobs "scam" case.
The CBI's investigation against the Mr Yadav family and others is part of its ongoing probe into documents and evidence that surfaced after the first chargesheet was submitted and also into the alleged roles of the accused that could not be completed by the time the initial report was filed, according to officials.
The officials also said the fresh round of questioning of the accused is taking place as part of the "further investigation" based on fresh inputs gathered during the agency's ongoing probe.
The CBI has alleged that during Lalu Prasad's tenure as the railway minister in the UPA government from 2004 to 2009, favourite candidates were appointed in the railways in violation of norms and procedures, without any advertisement or public notice. The agency has claimed that substitutes from Patna were appointed in various zonal railways located in Mumbai, Jabalpur, Kolkata, Jaipur and Hazipur.
As a quid pro quo, the candidates, either directly or through their immediate family members, allegedly sold land to Prasad's family members at highly-discounted rates.

Special Meeting For Delhi Civic Budget To Be Held On March 28
A special meeting has been convened at the MCD headquarters on March 28 to discuss and deliberate on the civic budget, officials said on Saturday. As required by norms, the civic budget is to be cleared by March 31.
The MCD passed the "schedule of taxes" in the civic budget for 2023-24 on February 15.
But, the remaining budget process was stalled as the standing committee of the civic body is yet to be elected.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi is "exploring options" to have the remainder of the civic budget cleared by March 31, official sources said on Friday.
The MCD on Saturday said in a statement, the "special budget meeting" of MCD for budget proposals for the revised estimates for the year 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 would be held on Tuesday at Aruna Asaf Ali Meeting Hall at 2 pm.
Earlier, the MCD had also written to the Delhi government to seek permission to call a special session for clearing the budget before March end.
If the entire budget doesn't get passed by March 31, things may "get into a limbo", a source said on Friday.
The allocations made to various departments in a civic budget is key to proper civic functioning.
The "schedule of taxes" was passed by the special officer of the MCD, whose office ceased to exist after the election of the Delhi mayor.
The taxes, rates and cesses to be levied in 2023-24 will remain the same that are prevalent as of today, the MCD said in a statement on February 15.
The municipal commissioner had presented the MCD budget in December and included the Revised Estimate for 2022-23 and the Budget Estimate for 2023-24, an official source said.

Pakistan Court Extends Bail To Imran Khan Till March 27 In 5 cases
A top Pakistani court today extended till March 27 the protective bail granted to former prime minister Imran Khan in five cases related to terrorism after he appeared before a two-member bench here.
The Lahore High Court (LHC) granted the extension of anticipatory bail to Khan after the 70-year-old chief of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf appeared before it amidst tight security.
Last week, Mr Khan was granted anticipatory bail in these five cases till March 24.
Of the five cases, one is related to the alleged attack on the judicial complex in Islamabad in which the government law officer objected that Khan should secure protective bail from Islamabad court.
Mr Khan told the LHC that last week on his appearance before a court in Islamabad police and FC (frontier constabulary) personnel fired teargas shells at his car and a clash took place between the PTI workers and police.
Besides, a plot was hatched to kill him there and that is why he returned to Lahore.
"My life is in danger I request the court to watch a video to see that I was waiting outside the judicial complex for 40 minutes as I am speaking the truth," he said and added he was facing a total of 140 cases out of which 40 were of terrorism and it is not humanly possible to appear in every case.
Mr Khan also informed the court that despite its order the Punjab police raided his house in Zaman Park Lahore and damaged it and stole several articles.
"Is there a law of the jungle or Pakistan being a banana republic," he remarked.
The LHC's two-member bench comprising Justice Tariq Salim Sheikh and Justice Anwaar Hussain accepted Khan's plea and extended his protective bail in all five cases, including in judicial complex attack one, till March 27.
The court also issued notices to the Punjab government and the Inspector General of Police, Punjab over the raid at Khan's house.
Mr Khan is facing 143 cases registered in different parts of the country since the Pakistan Muslim League-led government came to power in April last year.

'Hotel Rwanda' Hero's 25-Year Jail Sentence Commuted
Rwanda said on Friday it has commuted the 25-year jail sentence against ailing "Hotel Rwanda" hero Paul Rusesabagina, a fiercely outspoken critic of President Paul Kagame who has been held behind bars for more than 900 days.
The announcement comes less than two weeks after Kagame said Kigali was looking into resolving Rusesabagina's case, which has been a cause of concern for the West and global rights groups.
"Paul Rusesabagina and (co-defendant) Callixte Nsabimana have had their prison sentences commuted by presidential order, after consideration of their requests for clemency," government spokeswoman Yolande Makolo told AFP, without disclosing when they would be released.
The sentences of another 18 people convicted of terrorism offences alongside Rusesabagina in September 2021 have also been commuted, she said, highlighting the role of the United States and Qatar in the case.
But Makolo added: "No one should be under any illusion about what this means, as there is consensus that serious crimes were committed, for which they were convicted."
Rusesabagina, now 68, was jailed after a trial his supporters denounced as a sham that was plagued with irregularities. He has now been detained for 939 days, according to the Free Rusesabagina website.
His family has long warned about Rusesabagina's deteriorating health and has voiced fears he could die in prison.
A court in May 2022 upheld the sentences against Rusesabagina and most of his 20 co-defendants who were jailed for between three and 20 years for backing an armed group.
Rusesabagina was the manager of a Kigali hotel and is credited with helping to save about 1,200 lives during the 1994 genocide in which about 800,000 people were slaughtered, mainly Tutsis but also moderate Hutus.
Rusesabagina, whose story inspired the Oscar-nominated 2004 movie "Hotel Rwanda" starring US actor Don Cheadle, became a vocal critic of Kagame, founding his own party.
He emerged as a staunch government critic whose tirades against Kagame led him to be treated as an enemy of the state.
Rights groups accuse Rwanda -- ruled with an iron fist by Kagame since the end of the genocide -- of cracking down on free speech and opposition.
- 'Wrongfully detained' -
Speaking via videolink at the Global Security Forum in the Qatari capital Doha on March 13, Kagame had signalled a possible softening in Rwanda's approach on Rusesabagina's case.
"There is discussion, there is looking at all possible ways of resolving the issue without compromising the fundamental aspects of that case. I think there is going to be a way forward," he said at the time.
Makolo said on Friday that Rwanda "notes the constructive role of the US government in creating conditions for dialogue on this issue, as well as the facilitation provided by the State of Qatar".
Last year, the United States said Rusesabagina -- who holds Belgian citizenship and a US Green Card -- was "wrongfully detained" after a plane carrying him to Burundi was diverted to Rwanda in August 2020.
Also in 2022, the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention issued an opinion concluding that Rusesabagina had been "abducted" and that his detention was "arbitrary".
Rusesabagina's family said he was tricked into travelling from his US home with the promise of work in Burundi and that he has been tortured while in detention.
He was accused of supporting the National Liberation Front (FLN), a rebel group which is blamed for attacks inside Rwanda in 2018 and 2019 that killed nine people.
Rusesabagina denied any involvement in the attacks, but was a founder of the Rwandan Movement for Democratic Change (MRCD), an opposition group of which the FLN is seen as the armed wing.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and rights groups have raised the case with Rwanda, although Kagame said last year that the United States could not "bully" him into ordering a release.
Rusesabagina's family last year filed a $400 million lawsuit in the United States against Kagame, the Rwandan government and other figures for allegedly abducting and torturing him.
In 2005, Rusesabagina received the highest US civilian award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom

Backward Community Leaders Attack Rahul Gandhi For 'Modi Surname' Remark
BJP functionaries from the 'Teli' (oil-pressing) caste and leaders of the community on Thursday demanded an apology from Rahul Gandhi for his "defamatory" remarks against people with the 'Modi' surname, following his conviction by a Gujarat court.
They also warned of an agitation to protest Mr Gandhi's comments. The 'Modi' surname largely belongs to people from the 'Teli' community, who are part of the Other Backward Classes.
Maharashtra BJP president Chandrashekhar Bawankule condemned the former Congress president for "insulting" Telis and said it showed his "casteist" mindset.
It may be mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi also comes from an oil-pressing backward community from Gujarat.
"This is an insult to the OBCs in general and the community will show Gandhi his place," Mr Bawankule, who hails from the same community, told reporters in Mumbai.
Former Jharkhand chief minister Raghubar Das accused Mr Gandhi of crossing all limits of decency and asked him to tender an apology to the people of the country. The fact that Mr Gandhi has opted for bail shows that he has accepted his guilt, Mr Das told reporters in Jharkhand.
All India Teli Mahasangh's Ram Kumar said in a statement that Mr Gandhi has resorted to "abusing" others after his party lost power and added that people will teach him a lesson.
The Congress leader's comments have not dented the prime minister's popularity a bit and he should tender an apology, Ram Kumar said.
A court in Surat on Thursday sentenced Congress leader Mr Gandhi to two years in jail in a 2019 criminal defamation case filed against him over his "Modi surname" remarks.
The court of Chief Judicial Magistrate HH Varma, which held Mr Gandhi guilty under Indian Penal Code sections 499 and 500, also granted him bail and suspended the sentence for 30 days to allow him to appeal in a higher court, the Congress leader's lawyer Babu Mangukiya said.
Mr Gandhi was present in the court when the verdict was pronounced.
The case was filed against Mr Gandhi for his "how come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname" remarks, based on a complaint lodged by BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi.
The Lok Sabha MP from Wayanad made the remarks while addressing a rally at Kolar in Karnataka ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

"Futile Propaganda": India Slams Pakistan Over Kashmir Remark At UN
India has slammed Pakistan at the United Nations Human Rights Council during its right of reply where it warned Islamabad against spreading propaganda and attempts to foment communal disharmony in India.
The statement comes after Pakistan during the General Debate under Agenda item 4 at the UNHRC spoke about Jammu and Kashmir.
India called on Pakistan to focus on the safety, security and well-being of its minority communities instead of engaging in "futile propaganda" to create communal disharmony in India, PR Thulasidhass, Under Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs, Permanent Mission of India at the United Nations Human Rights Council.
"We call on Pakistan to focus on the safety, security and well-being of its minority communities instead of engaging in futile propaganda and attempting to foment communal disharmony in India," PR Thulasidhass said.
Mr Thulasidhass said that Pakistan's delegate referred to Jammu and Kashmir, which was, is and shall always remain integral part of India. He said that Jammu and Kashmir is marching towards peace and prosperity along with the rest of India.
PR Thulasidhass said that the world does not need lessons from Pakistan on democracy and human rights.
"The delegate of Pakistan referred to Jammu and Kashmir, which was, is and shall forever remain an integral part of India. Jammu and Kashmir is marching towards peace and prosperity along with the rest of India. This is despite Pakistan's repeated attempts to derail the process, through its active and sustained support to terror groups and its malicious disinformation campaign against India. FM of Pakistan has voiced Pakistan's frustration due to its failure in its malicious propaganda against India," he said.
Indian diplomat said that the democracy of India is mature enough to address any issues, including those instigated from outside. He said that minorities in Pakistan face blasphemy laws, systemic persecution, discrimination, denial of basic rights and freedoms, enforced disappearances and killings.
"The pluralistic democracy of India is mature enough to address any issues including those instigated from outside. India is a secular State and safeguarding the rights of minorities forming an essential core of our polity. What minorities receive in Pakistan are blasphemy laws, systemic persecution, discrimination, denial of basic rights and freedoms, enforced disappearances and killings," he said.
"The extent of religious discrimination is reflected in the loss of life, liberty and property on the mere accusations of blasphemy laws. Pakistan today stands out as the country having more cases of blasphemy than the rest of the world put together in the past few years," he added.
PR Thulasidhass asserted that Pakistan's contribution as a leading "exporter of terror and violence is unparalleled."
He questioned Pakistan over the presence of 150 UN-designated terrorists and terrorist identities listed by the UN. Indian diplomat at the UN Human Rights Council asked Pakistan if they can deny that Osama bin Laden was found living in Pakistan near a military academy.
"From a country where terrorists thrive in Pakistan and roam its streets with impunity, the world does not need lessons on democracy and human rights. Pakistan's contribution as a leading exporter of terror and violence is unparalleled. Can Pakistan deny the fact that it is home to as many as 150 UN designated terrorists and terrorist entities listed by the UN, and that these proscribed individuals have actively campaigned and contested in elections?", PR Thulasidhass said.
"Can Pakistan deny the fact that impunity reigns supreme in the country as perpetrators of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks continue to roam free? Can Pakistan deny the fact that its leaders have openly called for Jihad against India?," he added.

As Officials Take Bird UP Man Rescued, Akhilesh Yadav Targets PM
The heartwarming story of Arif Khan Gurjar and the sarus crane is over -- and the bird's relocation to the wild has provoked Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav to take potshots at Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The crane that lived with Mr Gurjar in Amethi district's Mandkha village, accompanied him to his fields and was accepted "like a family member" was on Tuesday taken away by forest department officials.
It was shifted to the Samaspur Bird Sanctuary in Rae Bareli so that it could live in its "natural environment", an official said.
A YouTube video showed Mr Gurjar placing the big bird in the back of a pick-up truck. He appeared to wipe away a tear as he walked away.
The YouTuber asked his subscribers to comment if the officials did a good thing "separating" them. But the department said Mr Gurjar agreed with the decision.
"Whatever action has been taken is with Arif's consent," Divisional Forest Officer D N Singh said on Wednesday. The official said these birds always live in pairs. Since this one was living alone, there was some apprehension.
A day after the breakup, Mr Gurjar appeared in Lucknow at a press conference by SP president Akhilesh Yadav, who asked indirectly if any official had the courage to take away the peacocks at the prime minister's residence.
Mr Yadav didn't name him, but appeared to be referring to pictures posted online earlier by PM Modi, in which he seen feeding a peacock.
"If the (state) government is snatching the sarus, the government should also snatch the peacock from the one who was feeding grain to it," he said on Wednesday.
"Does the government have the courage to go there? Does any official have the courage to go there and bring it (the peacock) from there," he added.
Mr Gurjar sat on the dais with the opposition leader, but didn't speak.
The crane probably wouldn't have left the man on its own.
Last month, Mr Gurjar told PTI, "This sarus is now like a family member. On a number of occasions, I left it in the fields to fly away to its own bird community but it refuses to leave me. It comes back to me every time." The man found the bird about a year back in his fields, lying unconscious with a bleeding leg.
He took it home, cleaned the wound and applied a mix of turmeric and mustard on it. Then he devised a splint out of bamboo to keep the leg stable.
But the crane refused to fly away even after it was well enough. Whenever Gurjar went out, it followed.
"I have not attended any family function in the last year because I just can't go anywhere. If it doesn't find me around, it becomes uncomfortable. If I have to go for some work, I need to dodge it. During the night, the bird sleeps by my cot on his one leg," Mr Gurjar had then said.
In Lucknow, Mr Yadav said it was because of the young man's humanity ("sewa bhav") that the crane became his friend.
"This is a subject of study how the sarus remained with him even after recovering," he said.
Mr Yadav claimed that the bird was "snatched" from Gurjar because he had gone to meet and congratulate him.
He also recalled how a sarus research centre was "taken away" from his native Etawah district, arguing that the BJP government is not only against common people and farmers but also against trees and birds.

Teen Sweethearts Finally Marry 60 Years After Parents Blocked Their Marriage
In an unusual love story, two British teenage sweethearts who were separated nearly six decades ago reunited and are now married. Sixty years ago, their parents had called off their engagement.
According to The Metro News, Len Allbrighton, 79, and Jeanette Steer, 78, had an extraordinarily tortuous path to their eventual wedding, but now they're both as content as they've ever been. The couple first met in 1963, when Len was 19 and Jeanette was 18. They claimed to have fallen in love at first sight while working as student nurses at St. Mary's Hospital in Newport, on the Island of Wight.
They decided to get married a few months after they initially met, but the girl's parents called off the wedding at that point. At the time, Jeanette was three years below the legal consent age of 21.
Over the next 50 years, they got married to different people and lived their lives separately.
Mr. Len made the decision to find Jeanette; they eventually reconnected in their later years and became married.
Jeanette said: "Married life is fantastic-it couldn't be better. It's nice to have someone who treats me with respect. I like doing everything and anything with Len."
Her new husband said, "We fell in love again."
"We read poems to each other and exchanged rings; I got emotional when reading mine. I was overwhelmed with my love for her."

10 Chinese Planes, 2 Naval Ships Detected Around Taiwan: Report
Taiwan on Tuesday tracked 10 Chinese military aircraft and 2 naval ships around the country, according to the Ministry of National Defense (MND), reported Taiwan News.
The military aircraft and naval vessels were tracked around Taiwan between 6 am on Monday (March 20) and 6 am on Tuesday.
Taiwan sent aircraft, and naval ships, and used land-based missiles to monitor PLA aircraft and vessels, reported Taiwan News.
Of the 10 People's Liberation Army (PLA) aircraft, three were tracked in Taiwan's air defence identification zone (ADIZ), according to the MND.
One Shaanxi Y-8 anti-submarine warfare plane and one Harbin BZK-005 reconnaissance drone entered the southwest corner of Taiwan's ADIZ, while one Harbin Z-9 anti-submarine warfare helicopter was monitored in the southeast sector of the identification zone, reported Taiwan News.
No PLA aircraft crossed the Taiwan Strait median line during this time.
Last Wednesday, MND tracked 28 Chinese military aircraft and four naval vessels around Taiwan.
So far this month, Beijing has sent 292 military aircraft and 76 naval vessels around Taiwan. Since September 2020, China has increased its use of grey zone tactics by routinely sending aircraft into Taiwan's ADIZ, reported Taiwan News.
Grey zone tactics are defined as "an effort or series of efforts beyond steady-state deterrence and assurance that attempts to achieve one's security objectives without resort to direct and sizable use of force."
China stepped up their military action in early August 2022 and held its live-fire drills in six locations around the country after the US White House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan on August 2-3, 2022.

Delhi Assembly Passes Resolution Against Officials For Delay In Budget
The Delhi Assembly passed a resolution on Tuesday for a probe by the privileges committee into the alleged role of Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar, Finance Secretary A C Verma and other officials in causing a delay in the presentation of the budget.
AAP leaders alleged that the officers sat on a communication from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) raising certain queries on the budget proposals and did not inform the minister concerned, leading to a delay in the presentation of the budget for 2023-24, originally scheduled for Tuesday.
The motion seeking a probe was tabled by AAP MLA Sanjiv Jha.
"Chief secretary, finance secretary and other officials in nexus with the office of the lieutenant governor (LG) and the Centre suppressed an important communication of MHA regarding the budget. I recommend a probe by the privileges committee into their role in it causing delay in tabling of the budget in the House," Mr Jha said.
Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goyal called for a voice vote and thereafter the matter was referred to the privileges committee.
Finance Minister Kailash Gehlot told the Assembly that he learnt around 2 pm on Monday that the MHA had raised some queries.
"I asked the chief secretary and the finance secretary several times and finally around 6 pm, I saw the file and it was sent to the LG after the chief minister's approval," Mr Gahlot said.
He said he was unaware of the MHA's communication which had arrived at 5:30 pm on March 17 through e-mail. Mr Gahlot said the chief secretary should have immediately brought the objection to the notice of the finance minister and the Delhi government.
He added that nothing can be more unconstitutional and demanded a probe into the matter.
Sources in the MHA had said earlier that the ministry sought clarifications from the AAP government as its budget proposals had high allocation for advertisement and relatively low funding for infrastructure and other development initiatives.
Speaking on the motion, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that officials should be held accountable for the delay.
"LG does not have the right to write on the file. What is the role of those who have been elected if only LG has to run the government? MHA orders (officials) to sit on the budget (communication) for three days. On March 20, the officials inform that the query has come. Action should be taken against the officials," Mr Kejriwal said.
Earlier in the day, Mr Gahlot said the budget file has been resent to the MHA for approval.
The MHA approved it and conveyed it to the AAP dispensation, sources in the lieutenant governor's office said.

"Serious Shortcomings": CBI Wants Red Notice Against Mehul Choksi Restored
The CBI has asked an Interpol body to restore the Red Notice against fugitive diamantaire Mehul Choksi, saying its decision to drop his name from the list was based on mere "imaginary conjunctures and unproven surmises" and had serious shortcomings, overreach of mandate and mistakes.
Red Notice is the highest level of alert by the 195-member strong International Police cooperation organisation Interpol to locate and provisionally arrest a fugitive pending extradition, surrender, or similar legal action.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Central Bureau of Investigation(CBI) said the Commission for Control of Interpol's Files (CCF) removed Mr Choksi's name from the Red Notice list in November 2022. The removal of the notice means Mr Choksi can freely travel out of Antigua and Barbuda where he is holed up after fleeing from India in 2018.
The statement was issued by the CBI a day after the media reported the CCF decision that came as a setback to Indian investigating agencies and triggered a huge political uproar.
Based on repeated appeals from Mr Choksi, who is wanted in the Rs 13,000 crore bank fraud in Punjab National Bank, the CCF removed his name from the Red Notice list in November 2022, it said.
The statement said the CBI has taken up with CCF the serious shortcomings, procedural violations, overreach of mandate and mistakes committed by CCF in the manner of reaching this unfounded and perfunctory decision.
Based on new information and serious errors in the decision, the CBI is taking steps for the decision of CCF to be revised, the agency said.
"The CBI continues to exercise available remedial and appellate options within INTERPOL for rectification of this faulty decision and for restoration of Red Notice." The CCF has subsequently clarified to the CBI that its decision "in no manner has any determination on any guilt or innocence of Choksi" for crimes he remains charged in India, the agency added.
The CCF which had removed Mr Choksi's name from the list of fugitives based on his appeal last year is a separate Interpol body which is "not under the control" of the Interpol Secretariat and is mainly staffed by elected lawyers from different countries where people can challenge decisions to declare them fugitives, the CBI statement said.
The Congress hit out at the Union government over the CCF decision, saying while the Opposition was being targeted by the Enforcement Directorate(ED) and the CBI, its "friend" was being let off.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said talk of patriotism by those giving "protection" to such people is a "joke".
In a tweet, former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi said, "'Vipaksh ko ED, CBI, Mitr ko rihaai' (ED, CBI for the Opposition, let off for friend)." "They are doing things to divert attention from real issues. Our embassies are being attacked. People who have run away with money from banks, Mehul Choksi, those giving protection to such people talk about patriotism, it is a joke." Mr Kharge told reporters. "We will ask the government to clarify on this." The Aam Aadmi Part(AAP) also accused the government of trying to save Choksi.
AAP Rajya Sabha MP and spokesperson Raghav Chadha claimed that Mr Choksi's name was removed from the Interpol's Red Notices as Indian probe agencies failed to provide “concrete evidence” of the charges slapped on him.
The CCF which had rejected two previous appeals of Mr Choksi -- in 2018, to not publish his name on the Red Notice list and in 2020, to remove his name from the list --agreed with his fresh plea in 2022, a year after an alleged abduction attempt from Antigua and Barbuda, the agency said.
Before arriving at any decision, the CCF hears the agencies that have sought an absconder's fugitive status. The CBI was also asked to provide its input on Mr Choksi's appeal.
"It was clarified (by the CBI) that the desperately wanted criminal Mehul Chinubhai Choksi has been making all possible attempts to derail ongoing extradition proceedings in Antigua and Barbuda, to evade the process of law in India. However, based on mere imaginary conjunctures and unproven surmises, a five-member CCF chamber has taken a decision on the deletion of Red Notice, communicated in November 2022," the CBI said.
The CCF has also reiterated that "it has not established factual certainties and there is no factual finding in their decision that Mehul Chinubhai Choksi will not have fair trial", it added.
Mr Choksi had fled from India in the first week of January 2018, days before the Rs 13,000 crore fraud in the PNB was detected. At the request of the CBI and the ED, Interpol included his name in the list of most wanted fugitives called Red Notice in December 2018.
"It may be noted that Mehul Chinubhai Choksi was already located prior to the publication of the Interpol Red Notice and steps were also initiated for his extradition. Although the primary purpose of Red Notice was already achieved, the same was retained as a precautionary measure," the CBI said.
The CBI issued a diffusion notice to locate Choksi in February 2018. His movements were tracked by the CBI in close direct coordination with foreign law enforcement agencies, and he was located in Antigua and Barbuda where he had taken citizenship, a year before he escaped from India.
"Extradition request against Mehul Chinubhai Choksi was sent through diplomatic channels to competent authorities of Antigua and Barbuda in August 2018." The CBI had booked Choksi on February 15, 2018, and after the CCF decision came, the agency slapped fresh FIRs against him.
"The CBI has already filed two charge sheets in the case against wanted criminal Mehul Choksi and others...Subsequently in 2022, CBI registered five more criminal cases against Mehul Choksi and others for defrauding banks and financial institutions," it said.
The agency said that when extradition proceedings were going on against Mr Choksi in Antigua and Barbuda, he started approaching various international forums with fully concocted and imaginary narratives to create diversions.

This is not the actor's first run-in with the law. In February 2022, he was arrested for an objectionable tweet on Karnataka High Court Justice Krishna Dixit, who was then hearing the hijab case.

"World Bank Offered Help In Waste Management In Kerala": Pinarayi Vijayan
The World Bank has offered its expertise and financial assistance to Kerala to manage waste accumulated in towns and cities across the southern state, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said today.
Mr Vijayan met World Bank officials at his office here and discussed the issue in the wake of a recent fire that occurred at the waste treatment plant of Cochin Corporation at Brahmapuram.
In a social media post, the Chief Minister said a drone survey will be conducted at all the waste collection centres in the state in association with the World Bank.
"Had a fruitful interaction with the @WorldBank delegation which has offered its expertise and finances in support of GoK's comprehensive waste management drive. Let's work together towards a cleaner and greener Kerala!" Mr Vijayan tweeted.
He said the World Bank has assured financial assistance and technical expertise considering the seriousness of the fire at the Brahmapuram plant.
"The World bank team has informed that they were ready to conduct a fire audit at the waste collection centres and treatment plants across the state after the drone survey and agreed to provide further assistance," he said in a Facebook post.
The World Bank assured the assistance of experts from the International Solid Waste Association, he said.
Brahmapuram plant caught fire on March 2 and continued to rage till March 12 when the fire service officials and the district authorities managed to douse it.
The toxic smoke had spread to various parts of the city and surrounding municipalities causing difficulties to the local residents and worsened the air quality.
