Thousand 'Bad Apples' Placed Outside London Police Headquarter As A Sign Of Protest

London police were confronted by the sight of 1,071 plastic rotten apples outside their headquarters on Friday, in a display seeking to mark the high number of staff facing investigation for sex offences or domestic abuse.

Refuge, a British domestic abuse charity, placed the imitation red and green apples outside the Metropolitan Police's New Scotland Yard building in central London, alongside a sign saying: "1071 bad apples. How many more?"

The demonstration comes days after a serving London police officer admitted to 24 counts of rape in a campaign of abuse against women - news that appalled the nation and shone a light on the issue of falling public confidence in law enforcement.

In an effort to regain public trust, the Met police said on Tuesday it was investigating sexual and domestic abuse cases involving 1,071 officers and staff, and that hundreds were likely to be sacked as a result.

"This is not one bad apple; this is a systemic problem across policing," Refuge CEO Ruth Davison said. "How have these perpetrators of abuse been allowed to enter and remain in positions of power for so long?"

"What happens next must change the culture of policing for good. A force which breeds violent misogyny is not a force which can even begin to protect women and girls."

The Met, which has faced a string of scandals in recent years revealing a culture of corruption, racism and misogyny, is Britain's biggest police force with more than 43,000 staff and responsibility for issues such as terrorism and extradition.

Refuge has called for "urgent and radical change" and advocated for fast-track legislation to improve vetting and disciplinary standards across police forces and mandatory training for all officers on issues concerning violence against women.

A Met spokesperson said the force was aware of Friday's protest, and its officers had engaged with those involved to facilitate a peaceful demonstration. It said the protesters left at 1000 GMT and took the apples with them.

Dera Chief Ram Rahim, Convicted In Rape Case, Gets 40-Day Parole Again

Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was on Friday again granted a 40-day parole, officials said.

The latest parole to the Dera chief, who is serving a 20-year jail term for raping his two disciples, comes three months after he was granted a similar parole.

"The parole has been granted for 40 days. It has been granted as per rules," Rohtak's Divisional Commissioner Sanjeev Verma told PTI over the phone.

The Dera chief's last 40-day parole had ended on November 25 last year. He had gone to his Barnawa ashram in Uttar Pradesh after his release on October 14.

Earlier, Haryana Jails Minister Ranjit Singh Chautala, while commenting on the Dera chief's fresh parole plea, had said the latter had filed an application seeking a 40-day parole which had been forwarded to the Rohtak divisional commissioner.

During his parole period, the Dera chief is also likely to attend the birth anniversary event of former Dera chief Shah Satnam Singh on January 25, sources said.

During his previous parole period in October-November, the 55-year-old Sirsa Dera chief held several online 'satsangs' at the Barnawa ashram in UP. Some of these were also attended by BJP leaders from Haryana.

Prior to his October parole, the sect chief had come out of prison on a month-long parole in June.

He was also granted three weeks of furlough from February 7, 2022, barely two weeks before the Punjab Assembly elections.

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the apex religious body of the Sikhs, had earlier raised an objection after Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was granted a 40-day parole last year.

SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami had alleged that while special kindness was being shown to Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, Sikh prisoners lodged in jails for about three decades were not being released even after completing their sentences.

The Dera chief in 2021, along with four others, was also convicted for hatching a conspiracy to kill Ranjit Singh, a Dera manager. The Dera chief and three others were convicted in 2019 for the murder of a journalist over 16 years ago.

Ahead of Republic Day, the Delhi Police has arrested two alleged associates of Canada-based gangster-turned-terrorist Lakhbir Singh Landa from Punjab, officials claimed on Friday.

The two have been identified as Rajan Bhatti, a resident of Gurdapur in Punjab, and Kanwaljeet Singh alias Chinna, a resident of Firozepur in Punjab, they said. In the ongoing operations against Khalistani terror-gangster nexus, police have apprehended Bhatti. He is one of Punjab's wanted gangsters and close associate of another fugitive Landa Harike, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Manishi Chandra said.

Bhatti was involved in over 15 cases and was wanted in a case registered in Punjab's Mohali. The FIR was registered in connection with target killings and for disturbing communal harmony in Punjab on the instructions of Lakhbir Singh Landa and Harvinder Singh Rinda, police said.

Based on disclosures made by Bhatti and technical analysis, Singh was also arrested in a joint operation with Punjab Police, the DCP said.

Bhatti was handling Singh to receive and push drugs and firearms through drones in Punjab. Landa Harike had also instructed Bhatti and Singh to eliminate two targets in Punjab, Chandra said.

Singh along with an accomplice was zeroed in a hotel in Amritsar. A joint team was formed for the raid. After they were cornered, the two suspects opened fire on the police team and tried to escape, officials said.

In a brief exchange of fire, constable Yogesh got injured. Although Singh was apprehended, his accomplice managed to escape, police said.

A case has been registered at the Beas police station, Amritsar Rural, in connection with this incident, police added.
