"Release Them": Relatives Of Gaza Hostages Break Into Israeli Parliament Panel

A group of relatives of Israelis held hostage by Palestinian gunmen in Gaza rushed into a parliamentary committee session in Jerusalem on Monday, demanding that the lawmakers do more to try to free their loved ones.

The action by about 20 people signalled growing domestic dissent in the fourth month of the Gaza war against Hamas.

One woman held up pictures of three family members who were among the 253 people seized in the cross-border Hamas rampage of Oct. 7 that triggered the worst fighting in decades.

Some 130 remain in captivity after others were brought home in a November truce.

"Just one I'd like to get back alive, one out of three!" the woman protester cried after pushing into the Knesset Finance Committee discussion.

Other protesters held up signs reading: "You will not sit here while they die there."

"Release them now, now, now!" they chanted.

US, Qatari and Egyptian efforts to mediate another release seem far from reconciling Israel's drive to destroy Hamas and Hamas' demand that Israel withdraw and free all of the thousands of Palestinians - including senior militants - from its prisons.

The fate of the hostages - 27 of whom Israel says have died in Gaza - has riveted the country. But relatives fear that war fatigue could soften that focus. Demonstrations that initially promoted national unity have become more aggressive.

Families and supporters have also started camping outside Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coastal home as well as the Knesset building.

"We will not leave him until the hostages are back," said Eli Stivi, whose son Idan is being held in Gaza.

Regular weekend rallies demanding the hostages be released have in recent weeks been reinforced by demonstrations calling for an election that might topple the hard-right government.

Anti-government protests that shook the nation in 2023 ceased after the Hamas Oct. 7 attack. Political rifts were set aside as Israelis rallied behind the military and the families of those killed or taken hostage.

But with the devastating war in Gaza in its fourth month and opinion polls showing lagging support for Netanyahu, calls for leadership changes are growing stronger.

On Saturday night, thousands protested in Tel Aviv, Haifa and Jerusalem, calling for an election. In Tel Aviv, some briefly blocked a highway.

In the Knesset on Monday, parliamentary ushers, often quick to eject hecklers or protesters, initially tried to block the families but then stood by during the ruckus in the Finance Committee. One lawmaker covered her face with her hands.

Panel chairman Moshe Gafni, head of an ultra-Orthodox Jewish party in Netanyahu's coalition, stood up, called a halt to the economic briefing under way and sought to calm the protester.

"Redeeming captives is the most important precept in Judaism, especially in this case, where there is an urgency to preserving life," he said, but added: "Quitting the coalition would not achieve anything."

On Monday, Netanyahu told hostage families that Hamas has made no solid offer that would see their loved ones freed, a day after he rejected conditions presented by Hamas to end the war and release hostages that would include Israel's complete withdrawal and leaving Hamas in power in Gaza.

"There is no real proposal by Hamas. It's not true. I am saying this as clearly as I can because there are so many incorrect statements which are certainly agonising for you," Netanyahu's office quoted him as telling the group.

Outside Netanyahu's house in Jerusalem - on a street called Azza, Hebrew for Gaza - The Hostages and Missing Persons Families Forum have set up a vigil calling for a swap deal to be advanced.

"If the Prime Minister decides to sacrifice the hostages, he should show leadership and honestly share his position with the Israeli public," it said in a statement.

MK Stalin Will Lead INDIA Bloc In Tamil Nadu, Puducherry: Congress

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin will lead the INDIA bloc in the state and Puducherry, said Ajoy Kumar, All India Congress Committee in-charge of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

During a press conference here, Ajoy Kumar exuded confidence that the alliance will win all 40 seats in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry combined--39 in Tamil Nadu and one in Puducherry--in the coming Lok Sabha election.

"DMK's alliance with Congress is firm. We will win 40 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Tamil Chief Minister MK Stalin is one of the strongest leaders in the India Alliance, and he will lead the India alliance in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry," Ajoy Kumar said.

The DMK has announced the seat-sharing negotiation committee for the parliamentary elections. The seat-sharing negotiation committee of the Congress party will be announced in two days, he said.

Ajay Kumar alleged that the central government had not provided enough funds for flood relief activities in Tamil Nadu, which suffered a lot of damage in the recent heavy rains.

"They are spending thousands of crores of rupees to build a Ram temple and start many projects but they refuse to provide funds to the flood-affected people of Tamil Nadu. The state government has been repeatedly asking for relief funds for the Tirunelveli and Chennai floods but the BJP government is not giving any response," he said.

He said that India's richest one percent owns 76 percent of the country's assets, but 50 percent of the population owns less than two percent.

"I Prevented Nuclear Holocaust As President", Claims Donald Trump

During a fraud lawsuit deposition, former US President Donald Trump claimed he averted a "nuclear holocaust" and saved millions of lives. He repeated this on the stand, while also lashing out at the judge and AG. Months earlier, during questioning about his business practices, Trump stated he was "too busy... saving millions of lives" to focus on his businesses, entrusted to his children. This released deposition footage adds a dramatic layer to the ongoing legal battle against the former president.

"I was very busy. I considered this the most important job in the world, saving millions of lives. I think you would've had a nuclear holocaust if I didn't deal with North Korea. I think you would've had a nuclear war if I weren't elected. And I think you might have a nuclear war now, if you want to know the truth," he said.

According to CBS News, Donald Trump, his two adult sons, and the Trump Organization were found liable for fraud before the case went to trial to resolve other allegations, including falsification of business records, conspiracy, and insurance fraud. James' office is seeking $370 million and sanctions, including a lifetime ban, preventing Trump from working in New York real estate. The judge in the case has indicated he will issue his ruling in the coming weeks.

In both the deposition and in courtroom testimony, Trump often focused his ire on New York Attorney General Letitia James and Kevin Wallace, a lawyer for James' office. On the stand in November, he called the case a "shame" and a "disgrace" while implying that he was being punished for his success.

Opinion: Opinion: Advisers Misled And Alarmed Rajiv Gandhi, Says Zail Singh's Aide

Insights on how advisers misled and alarmed Rajiv Gandhi during five years of his premiership are cited in an interview published in a commemorative book on the life of nonagenarian Tarlochan Singh, who was a confidant of President Gyani Zail Singh.

The former Rashtrapati Bhavan aide, who later became an Independent member of Rajya Sabha and also served as Chairman of National Commission on Minorities during the Atal Bihari Vajpayee regime, enjoyed a rapport with Rajiv Gandhi as he had worked with him during the 1982 Asian Games. At one point it seemed matters had reached a break point when Rajiv Gandhi called Tarlochan Singh late one night to inquire about reports that the President was about to 'dismiss' the PM. As it turned out, it was a wrong intelligence input, accentuated by rumours which the PM's advisers were inclined to rely on.

The differences between the President of India and the Prime Minister became evident soon after Rajiv Gandhi was sworn in after Indira Gandhi's assassination on October 31, 1984. Zail Singh had foregone the requirement of a formal request from the ruling party while inviting Rajiv Gandhi to be the Prime Minister.

(The President was abroad when Indira Gandhi was assassinated. On reaching Delhi, he invited Rajiv Gandhi for the swearing in. The Congress Parliamentary Board passed a post-facto resolution later that evening electing Rajiv Gandhi as the leader.)

Tarlochan Singh recalls that as Delhi and many other parts of India were engulfed in unprecedented anti-Sikh riots following the assassination, the Head of State was chagrined to find that after being sworn in as the head of the government, Rajiv Gandhi was not even taking phone calls from Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The condolence meeting for Indira Gandhi was presided over by Vice President R Venkataraman. This, too, added to Zail Singh's angst as he had administered the oath of office to Rajiv Gandhi by overruling his advisers, saying he was fulfilling Indira Gandhi's desire that her son should succeed her.

Elections were due in December 1984. The practice is that the Union Cabinet recommends the dissolution of Lok Sabha to pave the way for elections. The decision of the Cabinet is conveyed to the President by the Prime Minister, who formally calls on the Head of State. Rajiv Gandhi departed from this rule-only a formal letter was sent to Rashtrapati Bhavan. Meetings between the President and the PM became a rarity thereafter. The President's goodwill visits abroad were curtailed.

The acrimony worsened over the years and led to a section of Congress leaders and some leading lights of the media suggesting to Zail Singh towards the fag end of his tenure in 1986-87 that he may consider withdrawing the President's 'pleasure' under Article 75 and dismiss the Prime Minister.

Legal eagle Ashok Sen, who had served as law minister under Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri and Indira Gandhi, was part of this dissenters' group, which had been put together by Vidya Charan Shukla. Journalists S. Mulgaonkar, Kuldip Nayar and Arun Shourie also proffered advice to Zail Singh. And so did BJP leader Vijayaraje Scindia.

Tarlochan Singh says Zail Singh mandated him to create a 'smokescreen' that he was taking the advice of these people seriously in order to 'scare' Rajiv Gandhi and make him respect the protocol governing the President-PM relationship.

As news of these moves spread, BJP stalwarts Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Lal Krishna Advani called on the President and advised him against creating a dangerous precedent with such adventurism.

Zail Singh, who in any case was not taking Rajiv Gandhi's detractors seriously, decided to sound out Vice President Venkataraman on these developments. The Shukla-Sen group had suggested the possibility of swearing in Venkataraman as PM. The news reached Rajiv Gandhi through intelligence inputs. He immediately announced Venkataraman as the candidate for President of India two months ahead of the end of Zail Singh's tenure. Usually, the successor's candidature is announced at the fag end of an incumbent's tenure.

At the height of this crisis, a letter drafted by S. Mulgaonkar for Zail Singh 'dismissing the Prime Minister' surfaced in a section of the media. Tarlochan Singh says he received a call from Rajiv Gandhi late one night. The Prime Minister wanted to know from his erstwhile Asian Games colleague if indeed such a move was afoot. Tarlochan Singh assured him that he had checked with confidential stenographer Kulwant Singh and no such letter had been typed. (Zail Singh's knowledge of the English language was limited. He had relied upon Kulwant Singh to put into officialese his thoughts since his days as Chief Minister of Punjab in the late 1970s.)

Apart from Mulgaonkar's draft, a draft corrected by an Indian Foreign Service officer who served as deputy secretary to the President apparently had been leaked and intelligence inputs alarmed the Prime Minister. The role of leading media personalities in muddying the waters emerges from Tarlochan Singh's recollections. The sobering effect of two BJP stalwarts at a time when a section of Congressmen were being abrasive to the extreme is noteworthy.

President Zail Singh is remembered for his stance on the Indian Post Office (Amendment) Bill, 1986. The bill, passed by both houses of Parliament, empowered central and state governments to intercept, inspect and detain any items in the post perceived to be a threat to national security. The President sent the legislation back to the Cabinet for reconsideration. When the Council of Ministers again forwarded the legislation to Rashtrapati Bhavan, Zail Singh sat over the file. The legislation lapsed when he demitted office.

Tarlochan Singh says that before Zail Singh demitted office he persuaded Rajiv Gandhi to invite the outgoing President for dinner, where the differences were buried. Minister KK Tewari, who had spoken against the President in Parliament, was dropped soon afterwards. As a parting gesture, Rajiv Gandhi created a rule under which retiring Heads of State were provided residential accommodation and staff in the national capital-Zail Singh's predecessors had returned to their native homes after demitting office.

Tarlochan Singh's disclosures throw light on the tumultuous era when the controversial Shah Bano and Ram Janmabhoomi decisions were taken - decisions which left an imprint on the history of India.

During the height of the Zail Singh-Rajiv Gandhi acrimony, this writer once asked the then President why his relations with the person whom he had sworn in by skirting protocol had gone sour. Zail Singh replied in Urdu: "Jab khiza thi toh khoon humney diya; jab bahaar ayi toh poochhtey ho hamara kaam kya hai ?" (Rough translation: 'I nurtured the garden during drought; you question my locus when it attained bloom')

Just three days are left for the grand consecration ceremony of the Ram temple, which has been constructed on an area of 2.7 acres in Uttar Pradesh Ayodhya. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be taking part in the inauguration ceremony as the 'yajman' or main host. Along with him, thousands of high-profile guests will attend the ceremony that will be broadcast live to millions around the world. The Ram temple will open for the devotees a day after the "Pran Pratishtha" ceremony (January 23). The architect behind the grand temple, Chandrakant Sompura, spoke to NDTV about his vision and how he designed the temple more than 30 years ago.

"Mr Ashok Singhal (former VHP leader) decided in 1988 that the temple should be constructed here and he reached out to GD Birla. Our family had been working with Mr Birla for decades. So I got a call from Mr Birla and he asked me to come to Delhi, visit Ayodhya with him and prepare the design for the temple," Mr Sompura said.

He said designing the Ram temple was an uphill task 30 years back, as he had to prepare drawings using his footsteps as the unit of measurement.

"At that time, we were not allowed to take measuring tapes. I was told just have a look around alone. It was very difficult for me to envision a temple without proper measurement. So, I used my feet and counted the steps. I remembered all the steps - from left to right, across, and replicated the design inside a big hall where I could take proper measurement," he added.

The 80-year-old further said that he presented a few plans according to the vision of a grand temple. The final plan was approved and the temple is being constructed according to that, he added.

Mr Sompura comes from a family of temple architects that have designed over 200 such structures.

According to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra, the temple is three-storied, with each floor being 20 feet tall. It has a total of 392 pillars and 44 doors. There are five Mandaps or halls, and their names are Nritya Mandap, Rang Mandap, Sabha Mandap, Prarthna and Kirtan Mandaps.

The entry is from the east, and devotees will have to climb 32 stairs through the Singh Dwar. The trust also said that there are provision of ramps and lifts for the convenience of the differently-abled and elderly.

Interestingly, no iron is used anywhere in the temple, claimed the trust.

Meta's Sheryl Sandberg To Step Down From Board After 12 Years

Meta's former chief operating officer, Sheryl Sandberg, announced that she is leaving the company's board after more than a decade.

One of the most influential women in Silicon Valley, Sheryl Sandberg, 54, will depart the board as the tech juggernaut behind Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram faces increased regulatory scrutiny.

Sheryl Sandberg said on Wednesday that she would not stand for re-election once her term ends in May, but would serve as an advisor to the company thereafter.

"With a heart filled with gratitude and a mind filled with memories, I let the Meta board know that I will not stand for reelection this May," Sheryl Sandberg posted on Facebook.

"Serving as Facebook's - and then Meta's - COO for 14 and a half years and a board member for 12 years has been the opportunity of a lifetime," she wrote.

Mark Zuckerberg, Meta CEO, thanked Sheryl Sandberg for her work at the social media giant.

"Your dedication and guidance have been instrumental in driving our success and I am grateful for your unwavering commitment to me and Meta over the years. I look forward to this next chapter together!" Zuckerberg commented on her Facebook post.

Sheryl Sandberg resigned as Meta COO in June 2022 after a tenure that included helping steer Facebook to advertising dominance.

A Harvard-educated executive, Sheryl Sandberg joined Facebook when it was still a startup, playing a formative and often public-facing role in its development into a multi-billion dollar advertising empire that acquired Instagram and WhatsApp.

In 2021, the company rebranded as Meta in an effort to focus on its virtual reality vision for the future and move past its reputation as a scandal-plagued social network faced with scrutiny over how it handles privacy and data, as well as accusations that its products may cause harm to teens, public discourse and democracy.

Facebook was about four years old in 2008 when Sheryl Sandberg came on board as a mature, guiding hand at a tech firm with the motto "move fast and break things."

Her job made her not only a recognizable face in tech but also a household name, particularly thanks to her 2013 book "Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead."

The best seller encouraged women to "lean in" to their careers to reach their full potential and overcome workforce obstacles.

It drew applause from admirers, who credited her with articulating a modern feminist vision, and sharp criticism from detractors who said her lofty position made her out of touch with the grueling personal costs of combining career and family.

AAP Approaches High Court After Chandigarh Mayor Polls Deferred To Feb 6

The AAP Thursday moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court after the Chandigarh mayoral polls were abruptly postponed with councillors being told that the presiding officer had fallen ill. The administration told the court the elections have been deferred to February 6.

The Congress and the AAP, which have joined hands for the mayoral polls, slammed the BJP, accusing it of not allowing to hold the elections in the wake of its "imminent defeat".

The petition was filed by AAP councillor Kuldeep Kumar, who is the candidate for mayor post. The petitioner sought from the court for holding the mayoral polls and appointment of a new presiding officer in place of Anil Masih after he fell sick.

The court refused to grant any immediate relief to the AAP and fixed January 23 as the next date of hearing in the matter.

The matter was listed before the division bench of Justices Sudhir Singh and Harsh Bunger, said Chetan Mittal, the counsel for the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation.

During the hearing Thursday evening, the counsel for the Chandigarh administration informed the high court that February 6 has been fixed as the next date for the mayoral polls after assessing the prevailing law and order situation.

Earlier in the day, senior Congress leader Pawan Kumar Bansal also claimed that they have been informed that elections will not take place on Thursday as the presiding officer has fallen sick.

"It has been informed that elections will not take place today as the presiding officer has fallen sick," claimed Bansal as he accused the BJP of not allowing the polls to take place as the saffron party was to face defeat in the elections.

The polling for the post of mayor, senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor through secret ballot was to take place at 11 am in the assembly hall of the municipal corporation.

In the 35-member Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, the BJP has 14 councillors. It also has an ex-officio member MP (Kirron Kher) who has voting rights.

The AAP has 13 councillors and the Congress seven. The Shiromani Akali Dal has one councillor in the House.

Elections for the three posts are held every year during the five-year term of the House. This year, the mayor's seat has been reserved for the Scheduled Caste category. This time the mayor will be elected for the third term.

10 Manipur MLAs Ask Centre To Cancel Suspension Of 3 Education Officers In CBSE Affiliation Case

Ten MLAs of the Kuki tribes in Manipur have asked Home Minister Amit Shah to cancel the suspension of three education officers, who face disciplinary action over alleged fraud in clearing requests by 26 schools for CBSE affiliation.

In a letter to Mr Shah, the 10 MLAs said the three officers issued no-objection certificates (NOCs) to the schools that applied for Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) affiliation after May 3, the day ethnic violence broke out between the hill-majority Kuki tribes and the valley-majority Meiteis.

The 26 schools are in Churachandpur and Kangpokpi, both hill districts.

The CBSE's bylaws make it a legal requirement for state board schools to get NOCs from the state government before applying for central board affiliation. The Manipur government, before informing the central board about the alleged fraud, had announced that it had not given NOCs to any school since May 2020.

The district-level zonal officers do not have the authority to issue NOCs to schools without the knowledge of the Education Department, the state government had said, and formed a committee to investigate the alleged paperwork fraud.

The 10 MLAs, who have also been demanding what they call a "separate administration" carved out of Manipur, in the letter to the Home Minister said the three education officers acted in the best interests of students and schools amid the violence in the past eight months. The students lost precious months of the academic year, the MLAs said, adding the CBSE should re-affiliate the 26 schools and the three suspended officers should be called back to duty.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

The attempt by the 10 MLAs to rescue the three officers who are under investigation is "absurd", an education department officer told NDTV on phone from Imphal today. "They should let the investigation complete. There is a process; there is documentary evidence. No one can short-circuit due process, and later claim innocence before investigation is complete," said the officer, requesting anonymity.

The three suspended officers are Churachandpur ZEO Jangkhohao Haokip, Kangpokpi ZEO Lhingtinneng, and L Taithui, Deputy Inspector of Schools in the Samulamlan block of Churachandpur ZEO.

The change of the education board from state to central in the two "hill districts" was seen as a soft attempt at formalising a new arrangement, since the clashes began in May 2023.

A Kuki student group in Sadar Hills has sealed the offices of the Kangpokpi ZEO, and the deputy inspector of schools of Saitu and Saikul in protest against the government action. The group wrote "Office sealed by KSO-SH until suspension order is revoked" on sheets of paper and pasted them at the gates of the three government offices.

The student body in a statement appealed for a "swift and impartial investigation into the allegation against Lhingtinnneg Singsit", and the officer who replaced Singsit won't be allowed to work till their demand is met.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

In Churachandpur, none of the four newly affiliated schools - before they lost affiliation - had working phone numbers. One had only '0000' as the contact number. Not having working phones and having inconsistent details such as the phone number or address of the principal turning out to be of a relative are violations of the CBSE's bylaws for affiliation.

The Kangpokpi school principals had in December 2023 criticised what they called the authorities' "obtuse focus" on procedures when all that the students needed amid the ethnic clashes and other cataclysmic disruptions was academic continuity, whether CBSE or state board.

At least seven school principals in Kangpokpi district told NDTV on December 20 that their ZEO, who worked under the education department, gave the NOCs.

"The situation in Manipur after May 3 was such that functioning under the state board was becoming impossible. We have to go to Imphal for exam coordination and other state board work. How would that be possible?" one of the principals of a Kangpokpi school freshly affiliated with the CBSE - which was unaffiliated later - had told NDTV on phone in December. The other principals declined to be named.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

They repeatedly cited difficulty in coordinating with the education department at a time when battle lines have been clearly drawn on the basis of ethnicity and deep mistrust.

The state government was clear, however, that action would be taken against schools including withdrawing their affiliation if any of them was again found not following due process.

"The principals are not thinking right. What are they implying? Short-circuit administrative processes amid the unfortunate outbreak of violence? No one said NOC won't be given. All of us work for students. Questionable and unethical decisions by some school administrations can't be allowed to harm the future of students," a senior officer in the education department who was among a small team that looked into the initial investigation in the CBSE affiliation matter told NDTV on December 20, requesting anonymity.

Court Asks Bengal Cops To Produce Case Diary In Probe Team Attack FIR

The Calcutta High Court directed the West Bengal police on Monday to produce the case diary in the FIR filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on a mob attack on its officials when they went to search the premises of TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh at Sandeshkhali on January 5.

A lawyer, claiming to represent Mr Shajahan, prayed for permission to be added as a party in the matter.

Justice Jay Sengupta directed that the case diary be produced on Tuesday when the matter will be taken up for hearing again.

The Enforcement Directorate raided Mr Sheikh's house on January 5 in connection with an alleged ration distribution scam in West Bengal.

Justice Sengupta noted that a counsel approached the court claiming to represent the accused Sajahan Sheikh, but was yet to have the necessary vakalatnama, a written document which authorises a lawyer to represent a person in a legal proceeding.

"He prayed that his client ought to have an audience here. But, he is not having the vakalatnama at present," the court said.

Justice Sengupta directed that in the event the counsel is able to procure a vakalatnama, he will be at liberty to file an application for addition of party for his client.

The Enforcement Directorate has issued a look out circular against Shajahan Sheikh.

Enforcement Directorate's counsel submitted before the court that the agency found links to Shankar Addhya, who has been arrested by the agency, and Mr Shajahan during its investigation into the alleged ration distribution scam.

The Enforcement Directorate has arrested state's Forest Minister Jyoti Priya Mallick, who held the Food and Supplies portfolio from 2011 to 2021, and is at present in judicial remand in the case.

The state's counsel submitted that four people have been arrested in connection with the attack on the Enforcement Directorate officials.

Justice Sengupta asked how only four people were arrested when it has been alleged that hundreds were involved in the attack on the Enforcement Directorate officials.

The Enforcement Directorate's counsel also submitted that despite a murderous attack on the officials, milder sections of IPC were given in the FIR filed by the officials of Najat police station, within the area of which Ms Shajahan's house is located, on the complaint by the agency.

The Enforcement Directorate  has stated that three of its officers were injured and their belongings were snatched in an attack on them at Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district on January 5.

It was stated that vehicles of Enforcement Directorate officials and the CRPF personnel were also damaged by the mob.

Another single bench of the high court had on January 11 ordered an interim stay on proceedings in an FIR against Enforcement Directorate officials who went to search the premises of Mr Shajahan.

The Enforcement Directorate had moved the court praying for quashing of the FIR lodged at the Nazat police station in North 24 Parganas district against its officials, claiming that false allegations were foisted against them.

In the FIR, one Didar Baksh Molla, stated to be a caretaker of Sheikh's residence, accused the Enforcement Directorate officials of theft, outraging modesty and beating women and children when they went to raid Shajahan's house on January 5.

Three FIRs were registered on that day in connection with the incident.

The first FIR was lodged by Didar Baksh Molla, at 10.30 am, a second FIR was filed suo motu by the Nazat police on the incident on the basis of a general diary by a sub-inspector of the police station at 1.30 pm and the third was by the ED at around 8.10 pm.

Nitish Kumar Attends Lalu Yadav's Makar Sankranti Feast Amid Rift Rumours

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday treated himself to a Makar Sankranti feast hosted by RJD president Lalu Prasad, belying recent speculations that the alliance between the two had hit a rough patch.

Mr Prasad's younger son and heir apparent Tejashwi Yadav, who is also the state's deputy Chief Minister, expressed delight over the visit of the chief minister and made light of the speculations of a rift in the ruling Mahagathbandhan.

"We were pleased to have at our place the honourable chief minister on a day we have been, since long, treating people to 'dahi chuda' (flattened rice with curd), items made of 'til' (sesame) and 'konhre ki sabzi' (pumpkin stew). Other colleagues in the cabinet have been dropping in as well. We welcome them all," said Yadav, who briefly interacted with the posse of journalists.

The young RJD leader blamed the opposition BJP in the state and a section of the press for speculations of a trust deficit which grew strong ever since Mr Kumar took over as the JD(U) national president, replacing Rajiv Ranjan Singh "Lalan" who gave up the post-mid-term.

"Ever since Lalu-ji and Nitish-ji joined hands, the BJP has been scared. Also, we are running a government that has delivered on its promise of job creation on a large scale. As such, there is no need for any explanation on the various theories that have been doing the rounds," asserted Mr Yadav.

Notably, a section of the press had claimed that Lalan ran afoul of Nitish Kumar after he allegedly hatched a conspiracy to dethrone the latter so that Mr Yadav could take over as the CM.

Lalan has reacted by slapping legal notices on the outlets concerned and claimed that he relinquished the top party post to focus more on his Lok Sabha constituency and that it was upon his request that Kumar, the JD(U)'s de facto leader, agreed to take over as the party chief.

Interestingly, Lalan also walked beside Kumar when the two leaders emerged from the CM's residence and walked down to 10, Circular Road, the government bungalow allotted to Prasad's wife Rabri Devi, in her capacity as a former chief minister.

The elderly couple flashed a broad smile at Mr Kumar, who caused a flutter with his optics, but chose not to take any questions from journalists while sauntering back from the RJD leaders' place.

A host of other senior leaders from the JD(U) also turned up at the feast, including ministers Ashok Choudhary, Vijay Kumar Chaudhary and Sanjay Kumar Jha besides state unit chief Umesh Kushwaha.

Mr Yadav, who held fort engaging with the media contingent, was asked about the perception that the JD(U) was running out of patience by the "delay" in finalisation of a seat-sharing formula because Mahagathbandhan partners were coming up with competing claims.

"How do you know that such a formula has not been arrived at in Bihar? Who knows, it may have been finalised," cryptically said the RJD leader, whose party has been entrusted with negotiating, on behalf of junior partners Congress and Left, with the JD(U).

Why Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu Is Talking Tough: Explainer

Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu's demand that India withdraw its troops stationed in the country by mid-March is the newest in the anti-India rhetoric in the island nation that has started over the last few years. The number of troops -- 88 -- is too few to be a threat, which is what their presence is being portrayed as.

The troops have been stationed in Maldives since 2010 as part of a bilateral ties that involve training of Maldivian troops in combat and reconnaissance. They also provide help with humanitarian aid and medical evacuations for the residents of the remote islands.

Domestic politics of Maldives

President Muizzu is widely seen as a pro-China leader, a departure from his predecessors who pursued a pro-India policy. One of the key slogans for his campaign was "India Out'. The coalition government of the People's National Congress & the Progressive Party of Maldives party is currently following the pro-China policy to remove what they call the Indian influence.

Ahead of the Presidential election held in Maldives at the end of September, supporters of the People's National Congress of President Muizzu had pushed a narrative that the Ibrahim Mohamed Solih-led Maldivian Democratic Party was influenced by India.

The formal demand for troop removal was first made around two months ago -- shortly after the Muizzu government came to power in September, riding on an anti-India agenda.

Anti-India build-up

India's gift of two military Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopters helicopters to Maldives for rescue ops have been portrayed as creation of military presence.

An agreement for the UTF Harbour Project agreement, signed in February 2021 -- under which India was to develop and maintain a harbour and dockyard at Uthuru Thilafalhu near Maldives capital Malé -- has been a subject of intense speculation. A section of local media claimed that the project would eventually lead to the building of an Indian naval base there.

Fuelled by social media, a diplomatic row with India started as Maldivian ministers made derogatory comments following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's widely circulated post about his visit to the Lakshadweep islands. Three ministers who made harsh comments, were, however, removed.

China factor

President Muizzu's demand for the removal of Indian troops was also made days after his visit to China, when the two nations upgraded their relationship to a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.

China is interested in expanding its influence in Maldives owing to its strategic position in the Indian Ocean. The islands are located on the one of the busiest maritime trade highways through which nearly 80 per cent of China's oil imports pass.

Maldives and China have signed 20 important agreements during President Muizzu's visit. China has given Male an aid of 130 million dollars which will be spent on the development projects.

Should India be concerned

The foreign ministry is yet to comment on Male's demand for troop withdrawal.

Former foreign minister Shashi Tharoor has warned about the increasing proximity between China and Maldives.

"There is no doubt about the fact that China has been attempting to expand its influence throughout our periphery. They have been increasingly influential in everyone of our neighbouring countries, everyone, without exception," he said.

From Coal Miner's Son To Taiwan's President-Elect: All About Lai Ching-te

Pugnacious, stubborn, and a "pragmatic worker for Taiwan's independence", veteran politician Lai Ching-te will step into the international spotlight as the democratic island's next president to navigate an increasingly turbulent relationship with China.

The 64-year-old Harvard graduate rode to victory in Saturday's election on the promise that he would defend Taiwan's democracy and resist Beijing's claims on the island.

His win delivers an unprecedented third consecutive term for the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and in his victory speech Lai hailed it as a "victory for the community of democracies".

"We are telling the international community that between democracy and authoritarianism, we will stand on the side of democracy," he said.

He has vowed to continue outgoing President Tsai Ing-wen's policies of building up Taiwan's military capabilities as a defence deterrence against a potential invasion from China.

But his outspokenness -- which he has moderated in recent months on his path to the presidency -- has drawn the ire of Beijing.

China regards him as a "stubborn worker" for Taiwan's independence and a "saboteur of peace", warning that the soft-spoken politician would be the cause of "war and decline" for the island.

"There are strong doubts on China's side about his deep-seated convictions", said Mathieu Duchatel, head of the Asia programme at Montaigne Institute in Paris, adding that at this stage, "(Lai) wants above all to reassure".

Son of a coal miner

Unlike most of Taiwan's political elite, Lai rose from humble origins.

Born in 1959, Lai was raised by his mother alongside five other siblings in a rural hamlet in New Taipei City, after his coal miner father died when he was a toddler.

After he graduated from Harvard University, he returned to work in a hospital in southern Taiwan before turning his attention to politics in 1996 during the Third Taiwan Strait Crisis.

"My defining moment came as China's military adventurism... threatened our shores with live fire exercises and missiles," he wrote in an op-ed for The Wall Street Journal last July.

"I decided I had a duty to participate in Taiwan's democracy and help protect this fledgling experiment from those who wished it harm."

He served as a lawmaker, a mayor of the southern city of Tainan and a premier before he was tapped to be vice president to President Tsai Ing-wen, whom he will now succeed.

Under Tsai's two-term tenure relations with China plummeted -- with all high-level communications cut off -- as she defended the island's sovereignty and refused to acknowledge Beijing's claim over it.

During his campaign for office, Lai stuck to her stance that Taiwan is "already independent", and does not need to formally declare itself separate from China.

He has also said he is willing to have exchanges with China "on the preconditions of parity and dignity", explaining that closer ties for economic prosperity should not be traded for Taiwan's sovereignty.

"Accepting China's 'one-China' principle is not true peace," he said, referring to a Beijing doctrine that Taiwan is a part of China.

"Peace without sovereignty is just like Hong Kong. It is a false peace."

'Much fiercer'

During his time as premier, he was more vocal than Tsai about the issue of independence, which some say has top allies like the United States -- Taiwan's main weapons provider -- concerned about how he will handle relations with China.

"The question will be to what extent Lai can stick to the cautious and moderate pathway carved out by Tsai," said Amanda Hsiao of the International Crisis Group.

Sarah Liu of the University of Edinburgh said a Lai administration would continue on a path of "less economic reliance on China".

"Through strengthening its international standing, Taiwan will gain more allies to further consolidate its democracy," she said.

Tsai made a reference to his pugnacity in a campaign ad released this year ahead of the poll.

"You are much fiercer than I am... you step up and fight with others," she said in a slickly edited commercial that showed the two driving along a picturesque highway.

"But I did it for the safety of my country... because protecting Taiwan's democracy is the most important," Lai responded before Tsai handed him the steering wheel.

Assets Worth Rs 3.46 Crore Of Sub-Postmaster Attached In Money Laundering Probe

A land parcel and bank balances worth Rs 3.46 crore of a sub-postmaster in West Bengal have been attached as part of a money-laundering probe against him for allegedly claiming investors' deposits by forging their signatures, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) said on Friday.

A provisional order has been issued under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) for attaching the properties of Lakshman Hembram.

Hembram is a sub-postmaster in the postal department of West Bengal. The ED's case stems from an FIR registered at the Moyna police station in Purba Medinipur district.

The ED said Hembram used to effect premature or final closure of term-deposit accounts apparently by "forging" signatures of the account holders and transfer the amount or maturity proceeds of those accounts to the saving accounts of the same account holders without their knowledge.

"Thereafter, he used to siphon off the said amount from their savings accounts by way of fraudulent withdrawals again apparently by forging signatures of the account holders.

"The instances of withdrawals of amounts exclusively from savings bank accounts of the depositors and term deposit were observed without knowledge of the account holders as none of these withdrawals found mention in the relevant passbooks of the depositors," the federal agency said in a statement.

These withdrawn amounts, to the tune of Rs 4.12 crore, were used by the accused to purchase movable and immovable assets and for personal use and are proceeds of crime according to the PMLA, it said.

Karnataka R-Day Tableau Rejected, Siddaramaiah Writes To Rajnath Singh

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has written to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh requesting him to allow the state to showcase its tableau themed 'Brand Bengaluru' in the Republic Day parade at 'Kartavya Path' this year.

Expressing his displeasure over the Centre's denial to present its tableau, he said the decision had hurt the sentiments of Kannadigas.

In a letter addressed to Mr Singh, which he shared on 'X', Siddaramaiah said Karnataka has been taking part in the Republic Day parade at Kartavya Path, New Delhi, with its tableau for the last 14 years consecutively.

He underlined that Karnataka has won numerous prizes for its tableaux in the Republic Day parades with various themes, such as Maha Mastakabhishek of Bhagwan Baahubali (2005), Architecture of Hoysala (2008), Bidari Art of Bidar (2011), Bhootaradhane (2012), Channapattana Toys (2015) and Traditional Art Forms of Karnataka (2022).

Each tableau in Karnataka shows the rich culture, folklore and traditions of the state.

The theme 'Brand Bengaluru' was selected from among the five themes proposed by Karnataka for the 2024 Republic Day parade.

"The state had presented the key-model and the music before the selection committee and it had asked us to attend the next meeting with certain modifications. However, after the last round of meeting, Karnataka has not been included in the 2024 Republic Day parade to be conducted at Kartavya Path. Instead, the tableau has been accommodated in the 'Bharat Parv' section at the Red Fort," Siddaramaiah said.

According to him, the tableau themed 'Brand Bengaluru' depicts how the iconic city of Bengaluru has leapfrogged in development and yet is firmly rooted in its culture and tradition.

The state's contribution to 'Vikasit Bharat' is immense - be it technology, entrepreneurship or tax contribution. The grand Terminal-2 of the Kempe Gowda International Airport is the newest feather in its cap. It has been declared as one of the most beautiful airports in the world by UNESCO, the chief minister pointed out.

"The decision not to allow Karnataka tableau at this year's Republic Day parade has hurt the sentiments of Kannadigas. The exclusion has met with strong disappointment from the people of Karnataka," Siddaramaiah said.

"To avoid hurting the sentiments of seven crore Kannadigas, it is requested to allow Karnataka to showcase its tableau themed 'Brand Bengaluru' in the Republic Day Parade 2024 at Kartavya Path, instead of limiting it to 'Bharat Parv' exhibition at the Red Fort," he added.

3 Rooms, An XBOX: How This Mass Murderer Serves His Sentence

Three private rooms, as many budgies and an Xbox: the lawsuit brought by Anders Behring Breivik against the Norwegian state's prison regime details conditions that would make many prisoners envious.

Since 2022, Breivik has been serving his sentence in the high-security wing of Ringerike prison, on the shores of the lake that surrounds the island of Utoya where he killed 69 people, most of them teenagers, on July 22, 2011.

Mere hours earlier, he had detonated a bomb in Oslo, killing eight others.

The 44-year-old right-wing extremist now has three personal rooms to himself: a living room, a study room and a small gym.

On the floor below -- which he shares with another prisoner, though never at the same time -- he has access to a kitchen, a TV lounge with a games console, a dining room and a room for visits.

"Breivik has much more space than any other inmate in Ringerike prison," the facility's director Eirik Bergstedt told Norwegian news agency NTB in December.

Although the decor is relatively plain, the gym includes several exercise machines and the lounge has a large flat screen TV and several armchairs so he can play Xbox with the guards.

Despite these conditions, Breivik, who in 2012 was sentenced to 21 years in prison -- which can be extended indefinitely -- has taken the Norwegian state to court this week to protest against his prison regime.

In a tearful address to the court on Tuesday he said authorities are trying to "push me to suicide".

It is not the first time Breivik has used strong words to protest his conditions: in a letter to AFP in 2014, he threatened to go on hunger strike in prison if he did not get, among other things, a Playstation 3 instead of the older Playstation 2.

However, it is not the material conditions of his detention that he is protesting.

Held apart from other inmates in high-security facilities for almost 12 years, Breivik claims his extended isolation is a violation of Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which prohibits "inhuman" and "degrading" treatment.

A 'dungeon'

"They built a dungeon around me" to "wall me in", Breivik complained on Tuesday.

"I'm not a hamster, I need real human relationships," he said.

He is not totally isolated, and in addition to his contacts with the guards -- with whom he can play cards, cook or share a meal -- Breivik is allowed to see a pastor, a physiotherapist, a psychiatrist and a Red Cross visitor with a dog that he can pet.

He himself ended contact with a visitor appointed by the authorities, but for one hour a week he is allowed to meet another prisoner, also carefully hand-picked, with whom he can socialise with, for instance with activities such as making waffles.

Mostly, these meetings take place around a table, which he calls "Putin's table", with several guards sitting between the two prisoners for security reasons.

Or a 'palace'

In addition to activities such as basketball, walks or visiting the prison library, authorities have given him three budgies to comply with his request for a pet.

"I had asked for a dog, a goat or a miniature pig with which you can make empathetic contacts, which can be a good substitute for people in isolation", commented Breivik, adding that "budgies are better than nothing."

Larger mammals "are not very practical in a high-security area", state lawyer Kristoffer Nerland retorted.

"Moreover, veterinary authorities might have something to say about it."

On social media, some users have commented on the conditions of detention, comparing them to "a hotel" or "a palace".

"The Norwegian system is the way it is, but as a mother whose daughter he killed, it's hard to see him complaining with his nice flat," Lisbeth Kristine Royneland, head of a support group for families of the victims, told AFP.

Royneland who lost her 18-year-old daughter on Utoya.

"But at least he's behind bars and he'll never get out again," she added.

Meghalaya's Byrnihat India's Most Polluted City In 2023: Report

Byrnihat in Meghalaya topped the list of the most polluted cities in India in 2023, closely followed by Begusarai in Bihar and Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh, according to a report released on Wednesday.

Delhi, known for its persistently high air pollution levels during winter, ranked as the eighth most polluted city, the report by independent think tank Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) said.

Sunil Dahia, South Asia's analyst at CREA, said 227 cities with air quality data available for over 75 per cent of the days in 2023 were studied.

Among these cities, 85 were included under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP). The data showed that 78 out of the 85 NCAP cities had PM10 levels exceeding the NAAQS (60 microgrammes per cubic metre).

The NCAP, initiated in 2019, aims for a 20-30 per cent reduction in PM2.5 and PM10 concentration by 2024 in 131 cities that hadn't met prescribed air quality standards from 2011 to 2015.

The government has now set a new target of achieving a 40 percent reduction in particulate matter concentration in these cities by 2026.

"After five years of the NCAP implementation, only 44 cities out of the 131 non-attainment cities have concluded the source apportionment studies," Dahia said.

"Due to the absence of these studies, 64 per cent of the funds allocated under NCAP have been utilised solely for dust mitigation and ineffective solutions like smog guns, resulting in inefficient use of public funds," he added.

The CREA report revealed that only 37 NCAP-covered cities achieved PM10 levels below the annual targets set by the programme. Interestingly, in 2023, 118 cities not yet part of NCAP breached the national air ambient quality standards for PM10.

"This indicates that cities not included in NCAP aren't necessarily cleaner," Dahia emphasised.

Only seven of the 20 most polluted cities in India are currently under NCAP.

Byrnihat, covered under NCAP, registered the highest annual average PM10 concentration at 301 microgrammes per cubic metre, while Silchar in Assam reported the lowest PM10 level at 29 microgrammes per cubic metre in 2023.

Begusarai in Bihar (average annual PM10 level of 265 microgrammes per cubic metre) and Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh (228 microgrammes per cubic metre) secured the second and third positions among the most polluted cities.

Among the top 50 polluted cities, 18 are in Bihar, eight in Haryana, and eight in Rajasthan.

The report highlighted that PM10 concentration in the top 10 polluted cities was notably 3-5 times higher than Indian NAAQS and exceeded WHO limits by 13-20 times.

"Mahatma Gandhi Wanted Ram Rajya, Nothing Wrong With It": Farooq Adbullah

National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Monday expressed hope the consecration ceremony at the Ram temple in Ayodhya on January 22 will pave the way for an end to the hatred against the Muslim community in the country. Mr Abdullah asserted that he had always praised Lord Ram from his heart.

“Who goes or not (to attend the consecration event in Ayodhya) is their choice…I hope that with the opening of the temple doors, the hearts of the people will also open and the hatred, which is spread against the Muslims will end. This is my prayer and the lord will hear my voice,” he told reporters on the sidelines of a public meeting here.

The former chief minister said he is not afraid of criticism or losing votes on his remarks about Lord Ram “Ram is as much mine as yours. I have gone through a translation of the holy Quran by a Pakistani scholar and he has also talked about Ram saying he wanted all to move together with brotherhood and love," said Mr Abdullah.

“Mahatma Gandhi used to say that he wants India to be Ram ‘Rajya'. There is nothing wrong with it. I have sung ‘bhajan' (praises) of Ram in various temples over the years from my heart and I am not afraid of anyone's criticism or losing vote bank because I know if we have to save Bharat and the state (J&K), we have to join our hands to move forward,” he added.

Mr Abdullah said that all people have to stand before the almighty after death and the doors of heaven will only open when you testify that “we have done a right thing” or otherwise everyone will go to hell.

Without naming the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the National Conference chief said the elections are near and there are some who will come and seek votes on the Ram temple chanting “Jai Siya Ram".

“They are the ones who are differentiating people on the basis of religion, caste and creed and spreading hatred,” he said.

"Will Have To Constitute Bench": Chief Justice On Collegium System

The Supreme Court said on Monday it will have to constitute a bench to hear a plea against the collegium system of appointment of judges to the top court and high courts.

"I will have to constitute a bench," Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud told advocate Mathews J Nedumpara tersely after the latter mentioned an old plea filed by him for urgent listing.

Mr Nedumpara referred to the recent interviews of former top court judge Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, who retired on December 25 last year.

In an interview with the news agency PTI on December 29, Justice (retd) Kaul had said the National Judicial Appointments Commission was never given a chance to work, leading to angst in political circles and friction in the working of the collegium system of judges appointing judges to the higher judiciary.

The Narendra Modi government, after coming to power in 2014, had got enacted the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) Act.

The NJAC, tasked with the responsibility of making judicial appointments, comprised the Chief Justice of India, two senior Supreme Court judges, the union law minister and two other eminent persons nominated by the CJI, the prime minister, and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

However, in October 2015, the Supreme Court struck down the NJAC Act holding it unconstitutional.

In the interview, Justice (retd) Kaul said one has to accept there is a problem with the collegium system and it will be "unrealistic" to say that it is working smoothly.

"If people say it (collegium) works smoothly, that would be unrealistic in a sense because that is not a fact. That is reflected by the number of appointments which remain pending. Even till today, certain names which have been recommended, are pending," Justice (retd) Kaul had said.

"We have to accept that there is a problem in the system. If we close our eyes to the problem, we will not come to a solution. You must acknowledge the problem first and then only you can come up with a solution," he had said.

Justice (retd) Kaul, who was a member of the Supreme Court collegium for over a year, had said at present the collegium system is the law of the land and it must be implemented as it stands.

"Ram Temple Consecration To Be Broadcast Live In Temples Across Delhi": BJP's Karnail Singh

The live broadcast of the January 22 consecration ceremony at the Ram temple in Ayodhya will be screened at around 14,000 temples across the national capital, the Delhi BJP's temple cell chairman Karnail Singh said on Sunday.

Singh said that around 200 people will be present at each temple to watch the ceremony live. Nearly 30 lakh people in total are expected to attend the screening across the temples in the city, he added.

The BJP leader said 1.08 lakh diyas will be lit at the Khatu Shyam temple on the Delhi-Karnal road on January 20 and a bike rally taken out by temple priests on January 17 as part of celebrations to mark the historic event of 'praan pratishtha' at the Ram temple in Ayodhya.

Over 14,000 temple priests are visiting households across Delhi to distribute 'akshata' (uncooked grains of rice) to people and invite them to watch the consecration ceremony live at nearby temples on January 22.

Also, around 1,000 unipole hoardings have been booked to spread awareness about the "praan pratishtha" ceremony, the BJP leader said.

Emergency Exits Of Boeing 737-8 MAX In India To Be Audited After US Scare

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), India's aviation regulator, has directed the domestic airlines in the country to conduct an immediate inspection of the emergency exits of all Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft.

The precautionary measure taken by the aviation regulator comes after the emergency exit of Alaska Airlines's aircraft blew open mid-air, minutes after take-off. The DGCA has told domestic airlines to complete the inspection by tomorrow noon.

"DGCA has directed all the Indian air operators to carry out a one-time inspection of the emergency exits immediately on all Boeing 737-8 Max aircraft currently operating as part of their fleet," a DGCA official said.

The official also said that under the Alaska Airlines incident involving Boeing 737-9 Max aircraft, there have been no inputs or guidance from Boeing so far.

It's important to note that at present, no airlines in India operate the Boeing 737-9 Max, the aircraft involved in the incident. Air India Express, Spice Jet and Akasa Air have the 737-8 Max in their fleet.

The inspection of the emergency exits will not impact the flight schedules, the official said. "The one-time check will be done during the night halt of the aircraft," the DGCA official told PTI.

Alaska Airlines Mid-Air Scare

The incident took place on an Alaska Airlines flight from Portland to Ontario in Canada. The mid-cabin exit door had separated from the aircraft soon after take-off.

The aircraft landed safely back at Portland International Airport with 171 guests and 6 crew members and an investigation is one, Alaska Airlines said.
"While this type of occurrence is rare, our flight crew was trained and prepared to safely manage the situation," it added.

The aircraft reached a maximum altitude of 16,325 feet before it was diverted safely back to Portland, real-time aircraft movement monitor Flightradar24 said in a social media post.

The Boeing 737 MAX involved in the incident today was delivered to Alaska Airlines on October 1, 2023, and entered commercial service on November 11, 2023; it had accumulated just 145 flights since then, Flightradar24 said.

The 737-9 MAX series is Boeing's newest family of single-aisle airplanes. It includes a rear cabin exit door aft of the wings but before the rear exit door. This is activated in dense seating configurations to meet evacuation requirements. The doors are not activated on Alaska Airlines aircraft and are permanently "plugged", Flightradar24 added.

Woman Kidnaps Newborn From Delhi Hospital, Arrested

A 23-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly kidnapping a newborn girl from a hospital in Rohini here, police said on Friday.

The kidnapped infant was safely handed over to her parents, they said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Rohini, Guriqbal Singh Sidhu, said a 19-year-old woman reported on Wednesday that her newborn baby was kidnapped from Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar (BSA) Hospital by an unknown woman.

"An FIR was registered and a search operation was launched," he added.

A team was formed and more than 500 CCTV footage of possible routes in the vicinity were analysed, police said.

The DCP said that a woman was seen boarding a red colour e-rickshaw with the kidnapped child in one of the CCTV footage at the Rohini West Metro Station.

"The team traced the e-rickshaw driver and examined him," he added.

The DCP said that the e-rickshaw driver had dropped the woman near the main gate of the ESI Hospital in Rohini Sector-15.

"The police also came to know that the woman interacted with two persons in front of the DTC depot," he added.

The officer further said that the police traced them and got to know that the woman used their mobile phone to call her family.

"We later arrested the woman and the kidnapped girl was recovered from her possession," he added.

"Problematic": Supreme Court On "Girls Should Control Sexual Urges" Order

The Supreme Court on Thursday observed that certain paragraphs in a Calcutta High Court verdict, advising young girls to "control sexual urges", were "problematic" and writing such judgments was "absolutely wrong".

The Bengal government informed the top court it has filed an appeal challenging the High Court verdict.

The top court on December 8 last year criticised the verdict and termed some observations by the high court "highly objectionable and completely unwarranted".

The Supreme Court, which initiated a suo motu writ petition in the matter, observed that judges are not expected to "preach" while writing judgments.

The matter came up for hearing on Thursday before a bench of justices AS Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan.

Senior advocate Huzefa Ahmadi, appearing for Bengal, informed the bench that the state filed an appeal in the top court against the October 18 last year verdict of the High Court.

"The appeal was listed today before another bench of this court. That bench unfortunately could not sit," he said.

The bench said the suo motu writ petition and the appeal filed by the state would have to be heard together.

"It is not only about observations. See the kind of findings," it observed, adding, "Writing such judgments is absolutely wrong... What kind of principles the judges have invoked."

During the hearing, Mr Ahmadi referred to one of the paragraphs in the High Court verdict. The bench said certain paras in the judgment were "problematic".

"We have marked all the paragraphs," it said, adding, "In the course of this, so many findings have been recorded. Where these concepts come from, we don't know. But we want to deal with each and everything which is said. Your assistance is required."

The bench asked the registry to list the suo motu writ petition and the special leave petition (SLP) filed by the state on January 12 after getting approval from the Chief Justice of India.

In its judgment, the High Court had said that young girls should "control sexual urges" and "not give in to two minutes of pleasure".

In its December 8 order, the top court referred to certain observations made by the High Court and said, "Prima facie, the said observations are completely in violation of the rights of the adolescents guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution of India."

It observed the issue before the High Court was about the legality and validity of the order and judgment dated September 19/20, 2022 by which a man was convicted for offences under Sections 363 (kidnapping) and 366 (kidnapping, abducting or inducing woman to compel her marriage) of the Indian Penal Code as well as Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

"As per the order of the Chief Justice of India, suo motu writ petition under Article 32 of the Constitution of India has been initiated mainly due to sweeping observations/findings recorded by the division bench of the High Court of Calcutta in the impugned judgment," it had said.

The top court had said in the appeal against conviction, that the High Court was called upon to adjudicate only on the merits of the appeal and nothing else.

"But we find that the high court has discussed so many issues which were irrelevant. Prima facie, we are of the view that while writing a judgment in such an appeal, the judges are not expected to express their personal views. They are not expected to preach," it had said.

The high court made the observations while hearing an appeal by a man who was given a 20-year prison term for sexual assault.

It acquitted the man stating that this was a case of "non-exploitative consensual sexual relationship between two consenting adolescents, though consent in view of the age of the victim is immaterial".

The High Court also said it is the duty/obligation of every young girl to "protect her right to the integrity of her body; protect her dignity and self-worth; thrive for the overall development of her self transcending gender barriers; control sexual urge/urges as in the eyes of the society she is the loser when she gives in to enjoy the sexual pleasure of hardly two minutes; protect her right to autonomy of her body and her privacy".

"It is the duty of a male adolescent to respect the aforesaid duties of a young girl or woman and he should train his mind to respect a woman, her self-worth, her dignity and privacy, and her right to autonomy of her body," the High Court said.

Guwahati Airport Handled Record 5.6 Million Passengers In 2023

The Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Assam's Guwahati handled around 5.6 million passengers in 2023, an increase of a million compared to figures from 2022 when the airport handled 4.6 million passengers.

In 2023, the airport run by Adani Airports handled around 2.9 million arriving passengers and 2.7 million were departing fliers.

In 2023, the Guwahati airport handled over 46,000 aircraft. Among them, about 23,300 arrival and departure flights each. In 2022, the number was about 41,000.

"We are happy that in the recent calendar year 2023, we have exceeded the previous year's passengers number by 10 lakh, with a 17 per cent growth, one of the highest in the country. We are happy because we could handle this volume in a terminal that has less than half the passenger handling capacity. We are waiting eagerly to commission the new terminal this year that has double capacity than our current demand. We will have connectivity with Jaipur, Bhubaneswar and Bangkok this year and working with a few more domestic and international destinations this year," said Utpal Baruah, the Chief Airport Officer (CAO), at Adani LGBI Airport.

The airport has witnessed an increase of 5,600 flights when compared to 2022.

Last year, the airport had domestic connectivity with Jaipur and Bhubaneswar and Bangkok was the only international destination connected with the airport.

On Christmas Eve of 2023, a record 19,290 passengers were handled by the airport in a single day.

Opinion: Opinion: After Pivotal 2023, India Boldly Steps Into 2024

India strode prominently on the international stage in 2023. It chaired the G20 summit, as also the SCO summit (virtually). It attended the BRICS summit in South Africa. India was invited to the G7 summit in Japan where it also participated in the Quad meet. In organising a Voice of the Global South summit just before G20, India increased the diplomatic heft of its presidency.

At the bilateral level, US President Joe Biden, as a special gesture, invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the US on a state visit, which included an address to the US Congress. This wooing of India carried a significant political message about the growing strategic underpinnings of India-US ties, despite differences over our relations with Russia, the Ukraine conflict, our refusal to impose sanctions on Moscow, and the campaign in US think tanks, media, academia, and human rights organisations against "democracy backsliding" in India. US accusations of India's alleged involvement in the Pannun affair has been a troubling development.

French President Emmanuel Macron invited Modi to the Bastille Day on July 14 as the Chief Guest, a gesture of high regard for the Indian Prime Minister personally as well as a signal of the growing strategic understandings between France and India.

All these developments had India's steady economic rise, its growing technological and human capacities, strong, purposeful and ambitious leadership, diplomatic dynamism, and an independent foreign policy as the backdrop.

The success of India's G20 presidency was a tour de force in some ways. Without a Leaders' Declaration India would have suffered a serious diplomatic setback because of the massive political investment Modi had personally made in making the event emblematic of India's domestic and international ambitions.

The absence of a declaration would have also put the G20 in jeopardy as a platform, and this on India's watch would have been a blow to its rising profile. The opposition in India would have exploited any failure in the run up to the national elections in 2024. India, however, was able to finalise a fully agreed Leader's Declaration without caveats by any country.

That this proved possible despite the collapse of G7 ties with Russia over the Ukraine conflict, the draconian sanctions on Russia by the West that inflicted serious economic costs on the Global South by way of food, fertiliser shortages and disruptions in energy flows, was remarkable. The final declaration carries a substantial paragraph on Ukraine, which met the diplomatic needs of both the G7 and Russia backed by China.

The openly adversarial relationship between the US and China has disrupted international politics as well as existing economic and technology frameworks, led to moves to restructure global supply chains and raised the spectre of a conflict in the western Pacific.

China is now openly challenging US power. Through the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), it has knit relations with all corners of the globe in trade, control of vital raw materials and infrastructure development.

The West-built international order is being eroded, with Russia and China seeking to actively promote a multi-polar order. The Global South as well as some non-western countries hitherto politically and militarily dependent on the US are now pursuing hedging strategies and striving to balance their external ties by reaching out to China, even to the point of seeking its good offices to bring about reconciliation between regional adversaries, in, for instance, West Asia.

All this has consequences for multilateralism and collectively addressing pressing issues of climate change and issues of financial and technology transfers to developing countries and energy transition. (India stood its ground on its core interests at the Cop 28 summit at Dubai in November/December 2023). The indebtedness of developing countries, the accelerated implementation of Sustainable Development Goals needs genuine global cooperation, which will be impeded by the fractures in the international system. On top of this, India and China are locked in a military confrontation in the Himalayas as well as in the east.

It is in this broad international context that India's G20 success in developing a consensus on all vital issues facing the international community and bridging the divides should be assessed. India has emerged as a consensus-builder and a proponent of dialogue and diplomacy to resolve differences. It has credibility with both the North and the South, and to some degree the West and East (China apart).

India has capitalised on its policy of engaging all, even those who are mutual adversaries. Its membership of BRICS and SCO while as it is a member of the Quad supports the Indo-Pacific concept. India has grown visibly closer to the US even in the defence domain, which has given the country more room to manoeuvre on the international stage, and made it a valued partner to those who want to preserve the present "international order" as also those who want to reform it or even challenge it.

India is projecting itself as an upholder of the international order, albeit a reformed and a more democratic and equitable one. It sees building closer ties with the US as necessary for trade and access to capital. Cooperation in advanced technologies with the US is considered critical for India's economic growth and competitiveness. India wants to be a beneficiary of the shift in global supply chains hitherto concentrated in one geography. At the same time, it seeks a greater voice and role for itself and for the developing world in international governance.

The Voice of the Global South summit in January 2023 was intended to shift the agenda of the G20 from G 7 priorities to those of the developing world, such as managing global debt vulnerabilities, food and energy security, eliminating hunger, climate change financing, affordable, just and sustainable green development, focus on SDGs, reforming international financial institutions, and so on. Promoting the G20 membership of the African Union was part of this strategy. India convened the second summit of the Voice of the Global South in November 2023 to maintain the momentum.

India's membership of BRICS meets the goal of "international re-balancing", though the expansion process is not based on any clear criteria and is being thrust forward by China and Russia as part of their push for "multipolarity", which is a code word for countering the US dominance of the global system.

The SCO summit India chaired in July, although a platform for cooperation in Central Asia that excludes the West, has, for New Delhi, a logic beyond that. India as an Asian power cannot allow itself to be excluded from the Asian landmass and must remain a balancing factor in the power equations in this region, which are moving in China's favour.

The New Delhi SCO Declaration emphasised greater effectiveness of global institutions; a more representative, democratic, just and multipolar world order based on international law; multilateralism; equal, joint, indivisible, comprehensive and sustainable security; and cultural and civilizational diversity, with a central coordinating role of the UN. It stressed that unilateral application of economic sanctions other than those approved by the UN Security Council was incompatible with the principles of international law and had a negative impact on the third world countries and international economic relations. All this reflects dissatisfaction with the West dominated global system and the need for change and reforms.

With President Biden unable to attend India's Republic Day in 2024, and the consequent postponement of the Quad summit, President Macron's willingness to step in shows both the personal chemistry between him and Modi and the deepening strategic ties between the two countries. This was already reflected in Macron's invite to Modi to be chief guest at Bastille Day on July 14, when the two sides laid the foundations of a strategic relationship spanning the next 25 years by adopting the "Horizon 2047 Roadmap on the 25th Anniversary of the Indo-French Strategic Partnership: towards a century of French-Indian relations". India and France adopted a new Indo-Pacific Roadmap during Modi's visit, which includes extending their cooperation to the Pacific.

In May 2023, Prime Minister Modi, invited to the G7 summit in Japan, also attended the Quad summit. In his opening statement, Modi spelt out the importance India now attaches to the Quad, both on the security and economic fronts. He spoke of the Quad establishing itself as an important platform for ensuring peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific, recognised that the security and success of the Indo-Pacific was important also to the world. Modi reiterated that India now saw Quad as a "global good".

At Hiroshima, India joined the vigorous criticism of China's policies in the western Pacific that adversely affect India's interests too. India-China ties remain frozen at the political level. China has not appointed an ambassador to India since October 2022. President Xi Jinping did not attend the G20 summit in Delhi. The meeting of India's Foreign Minister with his Chinese counterpart in Delhi during the SCO Foreign Ministers' meeting produced no change in positions. China is making it clear that it will not make any concessions on the Line of Actual Control (LAC), and that India must accept the new realities on the ground. India, on the other hand, has reiterated several times in 2023 that for ties to be normal, the situation on the border has to become normal.

External Affairs Minister Jaishankar's five-day visit to Russia in late December was politically necessary in the absence, again, last year of an India-Russia summit. Any feeling that the relationship was losing its vitality needed countering. Jaishankar's visit sent a clear political message - India will continue to nurture its ties with Russia, undeterred by pressures by the West.

Jaishankar was received by Putin who does not usually meet Foreign Ministers. Putin has in fact been publicly praising Modi for refusing to be intimidated and for pursuing India's national interest despite pressures. Jaishankar delivered a personal message from Modi to Putin, who, during the meeting, invited his "friend Modi" to visit Russia in 2024, a prospective Jaishankar endorsed. Jaishankar noted that after talks with Sergey Lavrov, "what clearly came out was that India-Russia relations remain very steady, remain very strong, they are based on our strategic convergence, on our geopolitical interests, and because they are mutually beneficial".

All in all, India steps into 2024 with greater self-confidence and a higher international profile.

All You Need To Know About Bangladesh's 83-Year-Old Jailed Nobel Laureate

Jailed Nobel-winning microfinance pioneer Muhammad Yunus is celebrated around the world for helping millions of people out of poverty, but at home in Bangladesh he has a powerful enemy.

The 83-year-old, known as the "banker to the poorest of the poor", was awarded the Peace Prize in 2006 for his work loaning small cash sums to rural women, allowing them to invest in farm tools or business equipment and boost their earnings.

Grameen Bank, the microfinance lender he founded, was lauded for helping unleash breakneck economic growth in Bangladesh, and its work has since been copied by scores of developing countries.

"Human beings are not born to suffer the misery of hunger and poverty," Yunus said during his Nobel lecture, daring his audience to imagine a world where deprivation was confined to history museums.

But his public profile in Bangladesh has earned him the hostility of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who once accused him of "sucking blood" from the poor.

On Monday he and three colleagues from one of the companies he founded were sentenced to jail terms of six months -- but immediately bailed pending appeal -- by a Dhaka labour court which found they had illegally failed to create a workers' welfare fund.

All four had denied the charges and the case has been criticised as politically moviated by watchdogs including Amnesty International.

Yunus still faces more than 100 other charges on alleged graft and labour law violations.

Hasina's administration has been increasingly cracked down on political dissent, and Yunus's popularity has for years earmarked him as a potential rival.

The year after winning the Nobel Prize, Yunus announced plans to set up his own "Citizen Power" party to end Bangladesh's confrontational political culture, which has been punctuated by instability and periods of military rule.

He abandoned those ambitions within months, but the enmity aroused by his challenge to the ruling elite has persisted.

Since Hasina returned to power in 2008, Yunus has been hit with a series of criminal cases and a smear campaign by a state-led Islamic agency that accuses him of promoting homosexuality.

The government unceremoniously forced him out of Grameen Bank in 2011 -- a decision fought by Yunus but upheld by Bangladesh's top court.

A telecom firm he chairs was hit with a graft probe in 2022 over accusations it had embezzled employee funds -- claims that critics say are politically motivated.

Hasina also blamed Yunus for the World Bank's decision to cancel funding for a bridge near the capital Dhaka after the project was embroiled in a bribery scandal.

The bridge finally opened in 2022 after years of construction delays, and at its opening ceremony, Hasina said Yunus should be "dipped in the river" for jeopardising its completion.

Yunus has adamantly denied influencing the World Bank's decision and his office has described the claims as "purely imaginary".

'Poverty was all around me'

Yunus was born into a well-to-do family -- his father was a successful goldsmith -- in the coastal city of Chittagong in 1940.

He credits his mother, who offered help to anyone in need who knocked on their door, as his biggest influence.

Yunus won a Fulbright scholarship to study in the United States and returned soon after Bangladesh won its independence from Pakistan in a brutal 1971 war.

When he returned, he was chosen to head Chittagong University's economics department, but the young country was struggling through a severe famine and he felt compelled to take practical action.

"Poverty was all around me, and I could not turn away from it," he said in 2006.
