10 Of Pablo Escobar's Hippos To Be Airlifted To El Chapo's Birthplace In Mexico: Report

Colombia in March 2023 proposed a plan to ship at least 70 hippos from notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar's former ranch to India and Mexico to control their numbers. They have been declared an invasive species after the animals wreaked havoc on the country's eco-system.

As per the plan, 10 of Pablo Escobar's hippos are now being moved to a new location in Mexico, New York Post reported.

The animals will be flown from Antioquia, Colombia, to Sinaloa, the Mexican province which was home to cartel leader Joaquin ''El Chapo'' Guzman and his sons. Once the hippos land in Sinaloa, they will be taken to Jesús María, the bastion where Ovidio ''El Raton'' Guzman, was captured in January after a fierce firefight.

Their new home will be Ostok Sanctuary, a shelter for animals rescued from species trafficking/

Moving the hippos to the new location is an operation costing $500,000 and has been financed by conservationist Ernesto Zazueta.

Notably, Pablo Escobar illegally brought four African beasts to Colombia in the late 1980s. The hippos were part of a collection of exotic animals like elephants, giraffes, and antelopes at the private zoo on his estate in western Colombia.

But after his death in 1993, the hippos were left to roam freely in a hot, marshy area of the Antioquia department, where environmental authorities have been helpless to curb their numbers which now stand at 150 animals. The government said they started polluting soil and water and wiping out native plants in the region. Their faeces affects water oxygen levels, which can lower water quality and result in widespread fish fatalities.

The lifespan of a hippo is around 40-50 years, according to National Geographic.

While authorities relocated most of the other animals, the hippos were too difficult to transport. It is also not possible to transport them back to their native Africa since it risks upsetting the local ecosystem there.

A study in journal Nature has warned that the hippos' numbers could swell to 1,500 in 20 years. Authorities in Colombia used contraceptive darts and other methods to control their population, but these drives have had limited success.

In April, one of the hippos died in Colombia in a collision with an SUV on a highway, near Escobar's hacienda, as per NBC News.

Meanwhile, 60 of these hippos will be sent to India, as per CNN.

IIT Bombay Student's Death: Chargesheet Mentions Grades, Depression

A chargesheet filed by Mumbai police in connection with the alleged suicide of Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) student Darshan Solanki stated that he had sought help from someone for improving his academic performance and also mentioned depression.

The special investigation team of police on Tuesday filed a chargesheet against Arman Khatri, a fellow student, who had allegedly threatened Solanki over a religious comment. Khatri, arrested for allegedly abetting suicide, is currently out on bail.

Solanki, a first-year student of B Tech (Chemical) course hailing from Ahmedabad, allegedly jumped to death from the seventh floor of a hostel building on IITB campus in suburban Powai on February 12, 2023, a day after the semester exams ended.

Three weeks later, the SIT found a one-line note from Solanki's room saying "Arman has killed me".

Police had said earlier that Khatri allegedly threatened to kill Darshan with a paper cutter after the latter had spoken offensively' about religion.

The investigators recorded the statements of 55 witnesses including students and professors, the chargesheet said. Most of the student witnesses lived on the same floor of the hostel as Solanki.

Referring to certain phone chats between Solanki and Khatri, police said it was clear that Darshan was apologizing for the alleged communal remark he had made.

Some witnesses spoke about Darshan shivering when Arman threatened him and others trying to comfort him, the chargesheet said.

Solanki had told some witnesses that Khatri was influential and would not spare him, the chargesheet claimed.

He wanted to leave Mumbai but was scared that Khatri would come after him even then, some witnesses allegedly told the SIT.

On February 11 and 12 Solanki had fever, and his roommate gave him a blanket; it is assumed that he wrote the note mentioning Khatri on the back of a question paper before ending his life, the chargesheet said.

It also mentioned that a few days before his death, Solanki had a chat with another person on social media and spoke about some family issues as well as issues with the studies.

As per this conversation, he was unable to study well and did not score good marks which led to depression.

He requested the other person for guidance for improving his marks, the chargesheet said.

Kharif Harvest, Centre's Interventions Helped Contain Inflation: RBI

Inflation's upward pressures in the country on food items receded in the second half of the year 2022-23, with the robust kharif harvest and seasonal fresh crop arrivals as well as some easing in global food prices, the Reserve Bank of India said.

In its annual report for 2022-23, the central bank said there were upward pressures from an early onset of summer, heat waves and unseasonal rains on food prices in the first half of the year.

The report said the proactive supply-side interventions by the government also helped contain price pressures. "Timely beginning of the monetary policy tightening cycle with a cumulative increase in the policy repo rate by 250 bps since May 2022 helped ease demand pressures, anchor inflation expectations and contain the second-round impact of successive supply shocks," it added.

But for the timely monetary actions, inflation is estimated to have been higher by 90 bps, RBI said in the report. Geopolitical dynamics and possible weather disturbances overcast the outlook for inflation in India, it added.

Headline consumer price index-based (CPI) inflation (or retail inflation) gradually declined from its peak of 7.8 per cent in April 2022 to 5.7 per cent in March 2023. India's retail inflation was above RBI's 6 per cent target for three consecutive quarters and managed to fall back to the RBI's comfort zone only in November 2022.

Raising interest rates is a monetary policy instrument that typically helps suppress demand in the economy, thereby helping the inflation rate decline and vice versa.

"Common shocks emanating from the war in Ukraine - high food, energy, and other commodity prices - and the globalisation of inflation to multi-decadal high levels exerted sustained upside price pressures in India, leading to inflation remaining above the upper tolerance level of 6 per cent over 10 consecutive months (January-October 2022)," RBI said in the report.

Inflation eased somewhat during November-December 2022 on seasonal easing in food prices, before rising again during January-February 2023 and moderating to 5.7 per cent in March 2023, it added.

Monetary tightening by major economies and associated volatility in financial markets led to imported inflation pressures, the central bank said, adding, "input cost pressures from high industrial raw materials prices, transportation costs, and global logistics and supply chain bottlenecks impinged on core inflation."

The central bank said robust agriculture production buoyed by expectation of a bountiful rabi harvest and resilience in allied sector activity were also brightening the outlook for rural demand.

The report said risks to inflation have moderated with downward corrections in global commodity and food prices and easing of the pass-through from high input cost pressures of last year.

Globally, the cumulative increase in policy repo rate by 250 bps last year would steer the disinflationary process, along with supply-side measures to address transient demand-supply mismatch due to food and energy shocks, according to the report.

With a stable exchange rate and a normal monsoon - unless an El Nino event strikes - the inflation trajectory is expected to move down over 2023-24, with headline inflation edging down to 5.2 per cent from the average level of 6.7 per cent recorded last year.

Kapurthala Factory Was To Make 32 Vande Bharat Trains In 2022, Delivered 0

Railways' premier production unit, the Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala, failed to deliver even one Vande Bharat train in 2022-23 against a projected target of 32, documents have revealed, with the unit blaming its suppliers for not providing electrical components for the train sets.

The failure of the factory to achieve its targets, sources told Press Trust of India, could affect the Railways' ambitious plans of running 75 Vande Bharat trains by August 2024.

The coach factory did not just fall short of its target to produce Vande Bharat trains, but also in the overall the production of all kinds of coaches.

The factory saw a major shortfall in production at the end of FY 2022-23, having manufactured 1,478 coaches against a target of 1,885, according to a document accessed by news agency PTI.

The factory could manufacture only 153 3HP MEMU trains till March 2023, against a target of 256, and also fell short of its target for LHB coaches, manufacturing 1,325 of it against the goal of 1,520. Officials said the production of Vande Bharat trains in the factory is likely to begin by September 2024.

This year, the Railway Board has given RCF Kapurthala a target of 64 Vande Bharat Express trains.

A senior ministry official said the RCF has not yet completed the process of approving the design sent by French multinational rolling stock manufacturer, Alstom, for Vande Bharat trains.

Out of 92 designs, only four have been approved, a delay that precludes any possibility of start of production of the semi-high speed trains in the current financial year.

The rail factory has however put forth a series of reasons explaining why the production of various coaches and variants have been delayed.

According to the document, it said its production rate was affected by a spike in prices of raw materials which led to short fall in supply of trade items such as seats-berth, 60 KVA transformer, switch board cabinet, and shell components/ sub assemblies.

"There was serious shortage of wheel supply from May to September 2022 leading to loss of production. Production of 87 coaches was lost on this account. The delay in supply of electrics by BHEL resulted in production loss of MEMU rakes. VB Trainset Coaches delayed as RCF did not get electrics from M/s Medha," the document said.

Desperate to lineup 75 trains by August 2024, the Railways has put into service every factory at its disposal -- not just the RCF, but even Modern Coach Factory, Rae Bareilly, Latur Rail Coach Factory and BHEL.

Ukraine Approves Sanctions Against Russia Ally Iran

Kyiv's parliament on Monday approved a sanctions package against Russia's ally Iran, accused of sending weapons to Moscow during its more than year-long invasion of Ukraine.

The package was approved by parliament one day after Ukraine said Russia used Iranian Shahed drones in the largest UAV attack on the capital since the beginning of the invasion.

"The resolution synchronises Ukrainian sanctions with the actions of the entire civilised world on the path to the complete isolation of Iran," the Ukrainian parliament said on its website.

The package includes a ban on "military and dual-use goods" with Iran and  the "suspension of economic and financial obligations in favour of residents of Iran."

It still needs to be signed into law by Mr Zelensky -- a formality as the Ukrainian leader submitted the bill himself.

Mr Zelensky had last week appealed directly to Iranians, asking: "Why do you want to be accomplices in Russian terror?"

His adviser Mykhaylo Podolyak said Sunday that Kyiv was hit by dozens of Shahed drones and called Iran a "terrorist regime."

"Tehran has become a key ally of Moscow in this war, deliberately supplying it with weapons for attacks on civilian cities," Mr Podolyak said on Twitter.

Tehran has struck back by saying this was an attempt by Mr Zelensky to gain the West's military and financial support.

''Heartbreaking'': Video Shows Shocking Amount Of Garbage Piling Up At Mount Everest Campsite

Conquering Mount Everest is a lifetime dream for most climbers. Ever since Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay scaled the 8,848-metre summit on May 29, 1953, thousands of people make the arduous journey every year to achieve that impossible dream. However, decades of commercial mountaineering have turned Mount Everest into the ''world's highest garbage dump''. A distressing video has surfaced on Twitter that shows garbage, abandoned tents, and plastic waste thrown at a camp on Mount Everest.

''Disheartening to see the accumulation of garbage at Camp IV on Mt #Everest (8848.86 m). It's high time we address this issue with urgency and commitment. Let's demand stricter regulations, enforcement of clean climbing practices, and effective waste management strategies,'' reads the caption of the video shared by Everest Today, a portal dedicated to Everest climbing.

Watch the video here:

According to an estimate by National Geographic, each climber on Everest generates around eight kilograms of waste which includes food containers, tents, empty oxygen tanks, and even human feces. Exhausted climbers struggling to breathe and battling nausea often leave heavy tents behind rather than attempt to carry them down.

The video has left Twitter users concerned, who urged climbers and authorities to take stock of the situation.

One user wrote, ''I really don't find this adventurous at all. In the name of thrill, people do whatever they feel like. They want to go on for fresh air and surroundings And can't even keep their own home clean.''

Reacting to the video, bureaucrat Supriya Sahu also commented, ''When human beings don't spare even Mount Everest from dumping their garbage and plastic pollution. Truly heartbreaking.''

A third wrote, ''We as humans might have scaled insurmountable summits but we've surely stepped too low in our conduct and compassion towards Nature. Be it #mountains or #forests #rivers we've not spared nature's resources from our interference, pollution, and destruction.''

A fourth added, ''This situation is insane and critical to the natural ecosystem there. Local authorities should be able to solve the problem and prevent further damage. Waste management time with efficient maintenance service is one option but also other potential measures to cope with this issue.''

9 Years Of PM Modi: Union Ministers Highlight Government's Achievements

Senior BJP leaders, including Union ministers and chief ministers, highlighted the achievements of Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government in a nationwide outreach on Monday to mark its nine years in office, with Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur expressing confidence of its re-election in 2024.

From India's "rising" global stature to emphasis on national security, welfare measures like housing and toilets for the poor, boost to piped water supply, infrastructure growth and efforts to ramp up the manufacturing sector were among the initiatives cited at the press conferences they held in every state of the country.

The BJP said in a statement that the country has witnessed "unprecedented" development in every sector with the mantra of "nation first" guiding PM Modi's policies.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said in Lucknow that the Modi government's nine years have brought India safe borders and world-class infrastructure and increased its global esteem.

"In the last nine years, the Modi government has given the nation four strong pillars, which are respect, internal and external security, the welfare of the underprivileged, and infrastructure development," Mr Adityanath said at a press conference organised on the completion of nine years of the Modi government.

He said that the last nine years have seen the emergence of a "new India".

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said in Guwahati that before 2014, the allocation for the railways for the northeast was Rs 2,000 crore but it has increased to Rs 10,200 crore under the Modi government, helping expedite projects in the region.

PM Modi also virtually flagged off the semi-high-speed Vande Bharat Express which will travel between between Guwahati in Assam and New Jalpaiguri in West Bengal.

Tribal Affairs Minister Arjun Munda said in Raipur that the speed and scale of development and growth in the last nine years is unmatched.

In this context, he also highlighted various measures to combat the Covid-19 pandemic, including manufacturing of vaccines, and stressed that India's efforts were acknowledged globally.

Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia told reporters in the national capital that India has forged an image as a self-reliant country while focusing on the uplift and welfare of the poor in the last nine years.

The Modi government is working with a focus on service, good governance and the uplift of the poor, he said.

Citing various central schemes, he said the Modi government has provided water connections to 12 crore households in nine years and given 9.60 crore cooking gas connections under the Ujjwala Yojna It has helped 80 crore people by providing them foodgrains under PM Garib Kalyan Ann Yojna and covered 50 crore beneficiaries under the Ayushman Bharat Health Insurance Scheme.

Mr Thakur said in Ahmedabad that the BJP will retain power in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls by winning more than 300 seats under Modi's leadership as it believes in the empowerment of people and not appeasement.

He said the Centre had constructed 3.5 crore houses for the poor and 11.72 crore toilets, provided 9.6 crore gas connections, given free treatment to more than 60 crore persons and free rations to more than 80 crore persons.

The Congress made records in corruption prior to 2014 while the Bharatiya Janata Party set benchmarks by introducing welfare schemes and creating infrastructure like IITs, IIMs and AIIMS in the past nine years, Thakur asserted.

"Before 2014, scams used to emerge at regular intervals. Today, every citizen feels the Modi government is his or her own government. We lifted 27 per cent poor citizens out of poverty. Four generations of Congress shouted the slogan 'garibi hatao' (remove poverty) but did nothing. Our government gave security and dignity to the poor," the minister said.

Union minister Prahlad Singh Patel said in Shimla that the government not only focused on "seva (service), sushan (good governance) and garib kalyan (welfare of poor)" but also bolstered the image of India at the international level in the last nine years.

Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said Prime Minister Modi's every policy and scheme revolves around poor people and their uplift, and alleged that corruption was rampant during the previous UPA regime.

He told reporters in Hyderabad that Modi is providing governance in a transparent manner that is free from corruption with a mission to maintain peace and security.

The BJP said it was due to the all-round development ushered in by the government that leading economists and analysts the world over are of the view that the "21st century belongs to India".

The prime minister has ensured that police should be about service, performance, reforms and transformations.

BJP leaders also made power-point presentations in their interactions to highlight the government's achievements.

Other senior party functionaries who addressed the media included Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in Mumbai and Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat in Patna. Union ministers Piyush Goyal, Smriti Irani, Bhupendra Yadav and G Kishan Reddy spoke in Jaipur, Rohtak, Bhopal and Bhubaneshwar respectively.

The BJP has planned a month-long mass connect exercise from May 30, the day Modi government took oath for the second term in 2019. Modi is scheduled to address a rally in Ajmer in Rajasthan, the Congress-ruled state where assembly polls will be held later this year.

Special Flight, Promise Of Support: Centre's Big Outreach To Tamil Seers

While the historic sceptre Sengol remained the centre of attraction at the inauguration of the new parliament, it was the presence of pontiffs from 19 adheenams (mutts) of Tamil Nadu at the ceremony that drew the spotlight.

The centre that brought the adheenam heads and ooduvars (Tamil singers) in a special flight had also ensured arrangements for their everyday rituals for the last three days, apart from assuring them of support in the coming days, people familiar with the matter said.

Six of the 19 adheenam heads - Dharmapuram, Madurai, Thiruvavadthurai, Kundrakudi, Perur and Velakurichi - were specifically asked to present the Sengol to Prime Minister Narendra Modi today at the ceremony that was replete with Ganpati homam and recitation of Tamil chants and Tamil hymns.

The Sengol, a symbol of righteousness and self-rule, was then placed by PM Modi himself in the new parliament building, near the Lok Sabha Speaker's chair. Four of the six adheenams chosen to do the honours of presenting the Sengol to PM Modi were among the eight of the 19 Saivite mutts that are believed to have a history of existence of at least 400 years, or roots in ancient India.

"Many ancient adheenams have vanished due to lack of support, which is why the PM calling and honouring us is going to enthuse our followers and even scale up our religious activities," M Kartikeyan, senior advocate associated with Dharmapuram mutt, said.

l5jtbl0g

He said religious activities, followers and number of temples that a certain adheenam has decides its standing in the religious context.

"The centre made it clear that not just the oldest and most popular adheenams but also the rest are given importance. Each mutt delegation was not just given separate cars and large rooms but were also allowed to bring up to seven people for assistance as some of the pontiffs are old and need help to move about," another person said.

According to some of the seers, the Sengol transfer also records a new history of sorts.

"In 1947, it was just one adheenam that gave the Sengol to PM Nehru in 1947, but now there are six that did the honours. It is a big recognition of our efforts to take Saivite traditions to people," Sathyagnana Mahadeva, chief pontiff of the Velakurichi adheenam, said.

Adheenams are essentially Shiva worshipping mutts with Tamil rituals and ways of worship.

The pontiffs had come from different parts of Tamil Nadu, and three of the mutts - Thiruvavaduthurai, Dharmapuram and Madurai - are seen as among the oldest ones.

The first two are also counted among the wealthiest, having a larger number of followers. While many of the 19 mutts that came to Delhi are led by Saiva pillai heads who come from forward caste communities, many with OBC mutt heads, such as Palani Bogar Samadhi, were also invited.

It is clear that the attempt by the centre and the BJP is also to reinvigorate the Saivite traditions of Tamil Nadu that precede even Indian philosopher Shankaracharya, who is known to have given a framework of sorts for India's monastic traditions, and counter the forces centred around DMK and Periyarist push for rationality, atheism and politics that challenges Brahminical approaches.

3o66rphg

This is probably why upper caste mutts were made part of this event, and the focus was entirely on Saivite mutts run by other groups.

The adheenam heads and junior pontiffs who came with their aides and officials of their mutts were brought to the national capital in a special flight, and the culture ministry specifically assigned two people, one knowing Tamil to help the delegates.

The food on the flight and for the three days of their stay in a top hotel in the capital was entirely satvik, which is vegetarian food with no hint of onion, garlic or certain spices, with special consideration of their dietary restrictions and timings. There was a special caterer arranged who prepared food after consulting each adheenam's head official separately.

"For example, at the Dharmapuram adheenam, there is a puja that happens before sunset of the Lingam we have had for centuries. They made sure we landed before 4 pm so that rituals are not affected. The food that the seers here consume have to be prepared in a certain way. We are glad everything was taken care of," Mr Kartikeyan said.

Critics have pointed out problems with the move. Dravidian author Thirunavukkarasar said the attempt by evolving society was to reject symbols that reflect any form of oppression in the past. "Varnashrama dharma (caste) has to be fought inch by inch... traditions that the mutt uphold of caste discrimination and exclusivity cannot be glorified in a democracy," the author said.

But the adheenam heads have only praise for the centre's move.

In the three days they spent in Delhi, they were also taken to historic temples of the national capital before being flown back. In his speech to the seers, according to those who attended the meeting, PM Modi spoke extensively about Tamil pride and the glory of ancient Tamil civilization, and also connected it to how people from the south came to cities such as Varanasi to help out in matters of religion.

Union Ministers from Tamil Nadu, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and MoS L Murugun were also present at the meeting. At the meeting with PM Modi, the seers did not raise their problems, and the programme was apolitical, the participants said.

PM Modi, however, slammed "those who reduced the Sengol to a walking stick" and said "it took a sevak (worker) to take the Sengol out of a museum."

Dharmapuram adheenam head Masilamani Desika Gnana Sampantha Paramacharya Swamy said the Sengol installed by PM Modi is a sign of justice for all, and will bring the best for the nation.

Both Dharmapuram and Madurai in the recent past have had run-ins with the DMK government over alleged interference in their traditions and functioning, but officials said those differences have been resolved now.

UK Airports See Major Delays Due To Glitch In Passport Scanning E-Gates

Passengers flying into Britain faced major delays after landing at airports on Saturday due to a nationwide issue affecting the automated border control gates that scan passports upon arrival.

Images posted on social media showed long queues with hundreds of people at London's Heathrow and Gatwick airports with frustrated passengers complaining of having to wait several hours in line.

"We are aware of a nationwide border system issue affecting arrivals into the UK," said a spokesperson for the British government's interior ministry, which has oversight of border control.

"We are working to resolve the issue as soon as possible and are liaising with port operators and airlines to minimise disruption for travellers," they told Reuters.

Heathrow, Britain's busiest airport, said it had deployed extra staff to manage the queues and was working with Border Force to help resolve the problem.

While many foreign visitors to the UK need to see a border control officer upon landing, others, including British, EU and U.S. citizens, can use the automated gates known as e-gates to scan their passports and enter the country.

The disruption, which comes during a busy period for travel in Britain with a spring bank holiday on Monday and a half-term break for schools next week, means all passengers have to be processed at manual checkpoints.

"What's going on @HeathrowAirport? Just landed to scenes of utter chaos. 2 hour queues just to get to the real queue," one passenger posted on Twitter.

British airlines and airports have faced other disruption over the past year including from separate strikes involving airport staff and Border Force workers as well as cancelled flights caused by staff shortages last summer.

Punjab Offers One-Time Settlement Scheme For Defaulting Power Consumers

The Punjab government has brought a one-time settlement scheme for power consumers who have defaulted on their bill payments.

"We have come up with a one-time settlement (OTS) scheme for electricity consumers who have defaulted on their bill payment," Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said on Friday in a tweet in Punjabi.

Mr Mann said it will give a golden opportunity to such consumers whose power connections were cut or not restored because of their financial constraints.

This scheme will be available for three months for all categories of consumers, especially the industry, he said.

The OTS comes with the option of paying the amount in four instalments over one year.

Presently, the defaulters have to make late payments of the pending amount with 18 per cent interest. However, as per the OTS, the interest rate has been slashed to 9 per cent.

Further, instead of paying fixed charges for the entire period between cutting off the connection and its restoration, the consumers will not have to pay such charges if the period is less than six months.

However, if this period is more than six months, then fixed charges of only six months will have to be paid, as per the scheme.

B Bommai "Challenges" Congress To Ban RSS, Bajrang Dal In Karnataka

Senior BJP leader Basavaraj Bommai on Friday challenged the Congress government in Karnataka to impose a ban on Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and Bajrang Dal.

Alleging that the Congress was pursuing 'politics of vengeance', he said those who ever tried to ban RSS were sent home packing.

B Bommai was reacting to Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge's purported statement that the government will not hesitate to ban RSS and Bajrang Dal if they disturb peace in the state.

Keeping aside all its promises, the Congress has started pursuing the politics of vengeance. It appears that politics of vengeance is more on the agenda than the development of the state, the former CM told reporters here.

"They are talking about banning RSS and Bajrang Dal. Whom are they telling this? Please try it. I am challenging them. They don't have powers to ban any organisation. It's the prerogative of the Centre, which does it after seeking the opinion of all the states," B Bommai pointed out.

On the one hand, the Congress ministers were giving such statements to please a section of its voters, while on the other, they were trying to threaten those who believed in this ideology, he alleged.

B Bommai charged the Congress with 'misleading' those it was trying to appease and said it does not have power to do so.

"I ask Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to spell out your intention clearly with regard to banning RSS or Bajrang Dal. Will you support your cabinet colleagues or disagree with them? You must tell the people of the state clearly," he said.

According to the BJP MLA, RSS is an organisation which built the nation. It has put out in public its policies and principles and preparing youth for it for the past 75 years.

"Nobody can ban RSS. All such attempts in the past failed. Those who dared to ban it were sent home," he claimed.

Private Firms Fined Rs 15 Crore By Green Tribunal For Illegal Mining In UP

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has imposed a fine of Rs 15.96 crore on two private firms engaged in mining activities near river Son in Sonbhadra district of Uttar Pradesh.

The tribunal also directed the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), along with the state ministries of environment and forest in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, to look into the question of declaring parts of river Son, running in both states, as ‘Son Ghadiyal Wildlife Sanctuary' in accordance with law within three months.

The NGT was hearing a matter regarding the illegal mining of sand and morrum (a minor mineral derived from the weathering and disintegration of granitic rocks) near Son in the Sonbhadra district.

The tribunal noted that the issue pertained to such illegal mining near Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ) and protected reserved forests, in violation of various conditions of environmental clearance (EC), consent orders and environmental laws, directly causing damage to the environment and aquatic ecology, particularly the flora and fauna in the area.

Noting the evidence before it, a bench of judicial member Justice Sudhir Agarwal and expert member A Senthil Vel said two proprietorship firms, Sudhakar Pandey and Associates (respondent no. 14) along with New India Minerals (respondent no. 15) had violated environmental laws and norms in carrying out mining activities.

Both firms were granted permits for mining morrum in Agori Khas village of Obra tehsil in the district, the bench noted.

"...they (respondents 14 and 15) are guilty of carrying out illegal mining beyond the lease area... The next violation observed...is mining by the leaseholder in the mainstream of the river,” the bench said.

As illegal mining had caused serious damage to aquatic ecology and the riverine regime, both had to pay environmental compensation on the 'Polluter Pays' principle. For EC violations, they were also liable for the initiation of criminal proceedings, the bench said.

It said that considering the entire facts and circumstances of the cases, a direction is given to the authorities concerned to look into the question of declaring parts of river Son, running in the states of UP and Bihar, as 'Son Ghadiyal Wildlife Sanctuary.' "Ministries of environment and forest in the states of UP and Bihar and MoEF&CC shall consider the matter of declaration of part of river Son running in the states of UP and Bihar as Wildlife Sanctuary and ESZ for protection of ghadials (freshwater crocodiles) etc. in Son and would take necessary, remedial and appropriate action within three months," the tribunal said.

It said as the Environment (Protection) Act is included in the schedule of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and both respondents had committed an offence under the EP Act, the Directorate of Enforcement could look into these aspects and take further action.

Regarding the quantum of compensation, it directed Sudhakar Pandey and associates and New India Minerals to pay a compensation of Rs 8.16 crore and Rs 7.8 crore, respectively to the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) by depositing 40 per cent of the amount within one month and the remaining amount in two equal instalments within two months.

Forming a joint committee comprising representatives of the UP's State Environment Impact Assessment Authority, the state's Ministry of Environment and Forest, UPPCB, and District Magistrate, Sonbhadra, the green tribunal directed it to revisit all mining leases in the Son river bed in Sonbhadra district and take appropriate decision or action within three months.

It said till the committee took a decision, no further mining in the riverbed is allowed.

Science From India Returned Millennia Later As "Western Discoveries": ISRO Chief

India was a knowledge society since Vedic times involving Maths, medicine, metaphysics, astronomy etc written in Sanskrit, but all such learning came back to the country several thousand years later as "discoveries by Western scientists", Indian Space Research Organisation chairman S Somnath has said.

Addressing the fourth convocation ceremony of the Maharishi Panini Sanskrit and Vedic University here on Wednesday, Mr Somnath said Sanskrit was one of the most ancient languages of the world with its repertoire including poetry, logic, grammar, philosophy, science, technology, maths and other allied subjects.

"Surya Sidhanta, the very first book I came across in Sanskrit talks about the domain I am familiar with. This book specifically talks about solar system, how planets move around the sun, periodicity of this movement, timescales etc," he said.

"All this knowledge travelled from here, reached the Arabs, then went to Europe and thousands of years later came back to us as discoveries of great Western scientists. However, all this knowledge was written here in this language Sanskrit," Mr Somnath asserted.

The imprint of the contribution of scientists that was expressed in Sanskrit down the ages in fields like astronomy, atmospheric sciences, biological sciences, medicine, physics, aeronautics can been seen through the journey of Indian culture, the ISRO chief added.

The point is this knowledge had not been full exploited or researched, he said, adding that inviting persons like him to talk about science and Sanskrit will help the organisers to take the next step of showing that Sanskrit can be used to easily convey scientific thought and the process of science.

Concepts like 'shunya' (zero) as well as infinity were discovered by ancient sages, while Algebra, the Pythagoras Theorem were expressed precisely and in poetic style (in Sanskrit), he said.

"Many other concepts like that of vimana, architecture, the concept of time, the structure of the universe, how it evolved and grew, metallurgy, chemical technologies, medicine treatment, languages, the structure of grammar, shastras like Nyaya, sangeet, spirituality, Yoga have been expressed beautifully in Sanskrit," he said.

The difficulty faced by scientists of the time was that Sanskrit was expressed more in 'shruti' (sound) that in written form, which also made the language more beautiful to listen that many other languages, Mr Somnath said.

"That's why it survived. Today you don't need that shruti structure, which is the beauty of this language as it is a formula based and logical based language. We scientists love this kind of language, which is rule based, syntax based, something which suits the computer language," he said.

Those working in the fields of Artificial Intelligence, machine learning love Sanskrit and there is a lot of research underway to see how it can be used for computing and natural language processing, the ISRO chief said.

What Is Urinary Incontinence? 6 Reasons Why You Might Be Experiencing Leaking Urine

Urinary Incontinence is a medical condition characterised by the loss of control over the urinary bladder, resulting in the leakage of urine involuntarily. The condition is prevalent among all ages, genders, and races, but is most common among older individuals and women, especially during pregnancy and after childbirth.

There are four types of urinary incontinence, including stress incontinence, urge incontinence, overflow incontinence, and functional incontinence. Each type is caused by different factors. In this article, we discuss different kinds of urinary incontinence and what might cause leaking urine.

Different kinds of urinary incontinence:

1. Stress Incontinence

Occurs when the pelvic muscles that support the bladder and urethra weaken or are damaged. Thus, any activity that puts pressure on the bladder, such as coughing, sneezing, or laughing, causes the leakage of urine.

2. Urge Incontinence

Also known as Overactive Bladder Syndrome, occurs when the bladder muscles contract uncontrollably, causing a sudden and intense urge to urinate, resulting in the leakage of urine.

3. Overflow Incontinence

This type is caused by an obstruction in the bladder or urethra, leading to the inability of the bladder to empty fully. As a result, the bladder remains full, eventually leading to leakage of urine.

4. Functional Incontinence

Occurs when a person cannot get to the bathroom quickly enough due to a physical or mental disability, resulting in the leakage of urine.

The risk factors for urinary incontinence include pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, aging, obesity, neurological disorders, and prostate cancer for men. Treatment for urinary incontinence includes bladder retraining, pelvic floor exercises, medication, and surgery. Most cases of urinary incontinence can be managed and cured with proper treatment.

Urinary incontinence is a medical condition characterised by involuntary leakage of urine. It is more common in women than men, and it can be caused due to several reasons. Here are some of the reasons why one might be experiencing leaking urine.

Reasons you might have urinary incontinence:

1. Weak pelvic floor muscles

The pelvic floor muscles support the bladder and urethra. Weakness of these muscles can lead to an inability to control urination, resulting in urinary incontinence.

2. Urinary tract infections

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) can cause inflammation of the bladder and urethra, leading to urge incontinence, which is characterised by a sudden need to pee.

3. Neurological conditions

Neurological conditions like Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and spinal cord injuries can damage the nerves that control the bladder, leading to urinary incontinence.

4. Hormonal changes

Hormonal changes during menopause can lead to some degree of urinary incontinence due to reduced oestrogen levels.

5. Side effects of medications

Certain medications, such as diuretics and antidepressants, can cause urinary incontinence.

6. Obesity

Being overweight or obese can put excessive pressure on the bladder, leading to stress incontinence, which occurs when the bladder muscles cannot stay closed during physical activity like sneezing or coughing.

In conclusion, urinary incontinence is a common condition that can be caused by various factors, and treatment options depend on the underlying cause and severity of the condition. It is essential to consult a healthcare provider for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Book Returned To US Library After Nearly 100 Years

An overdue book, 'A Family History of the United States' by historian Benson Lossing was recently returned to the St. Helena Public Library, after 96 years. It was checked out in 1927.

Jim Perry returned the library book he found while cleaning his Napa, Calif., home, according to Washington Post. "This is an old book that's been in our family for five generations," Mr Perry recalled saying at the front desk of the St. Helena Public Library.

Mr Perry did not leave any contact information. However, Mr Perry believes the book borrowed by his grandfather-in-law might have actually been part of the library's original collection.

The library director, Chris Kreiden told Washington Post, "This is the oldest one I've ever seen, definitely." He added, "I mean we've had things [checked out for] two or three years, maybe five, but never anything quite this long."

Mr Perry, 75, decided to declutter his home including old boxes that had been sitting unopened for years.

"I'm 75 years old but very healthy," he said. "But I don't want to leave my kids with piles of stuff from yesteryear."

He said that the book was checked out in 1927 and around that time his wife's grandfather, John McCormick, might have wanted the book to start teaching his two young daughters about American history.

"I didn't know how special it was," Mr Perry said.

When the library staff opened the book it was worn, the edges of the pages were fragile and brown. The staff said that the book was "falling apart."

On the last page of the book, there was a faded black stamp of the due date of the book's return: Feb. 21, 1927.

The overdue fee was five cents per day.

St Helena Public Library posted the story on its Instagram page. The book is displayed in a glass case to prevent further damage.

"How amazing is this! 96 years ago someone checked this book out from our library. It just goes to show, it's never too late to return your library book. Book is on display by our entrance," the caption read.

"Ensure Justice Delivered In True Sense": President To Centre, Chief Justice

President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday said that court orders are not implemented sometimes, and the government and the Chief Justice of India should ensure that people get justice in the true sense.

She was addressing a gathering after inaugurating the new building of the Jharkhand High Court.

"Chief Justice of India Justice Dr D Y Chandrachud and Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and many senior judges are here. I will urge them to ensure that justice is delivered to people in the true sense," Murmu said.

She said that even after getting a favourable verdict, people's happiness is sometimes short-lived, as the court orders are not implemented.

The President appreciated the CJI for speaking in Hindi during his address. “The language of justice should be inclusive,” she said.

Murmu also said that the expensive litigation procedure makes justice out of reach of the common people.

Cloudy Skies, Strong Winds Provide Break From Brutal Heat In Delhi

Overcast skies and gusty winds on Wednesday brought relief from the punishing heat in Delhi and temperatures are predicted to drop further due to intermittent rain over the next two to three days, the India Meteorological Department said.

The Safdarjung Observatory, Delhi's primary weather station, recorded a minimum temperature of 25.4 degrees Celsius, a notch below normal. The maximum temperature settled at 34.7 degrees Celsius, a departure of five degrees.

Under the influence of a western disturbance active over the western Himalayan region, thunderstorms and intermittent rain are predicted in northwest India, including the national capital and its surrounding areas, over the next two to three days.

This will bring the maximum temperature down to 33 degrees Celsius on Thursday. Below-normal maximum temperatures are predicted until May 30.

A heat wave scorched parts of Delhi on Tuesday with seven of the 22 weather stations in the national capital recording maximum temperatures above the 45-degree-Celsius mark, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had said.

The heat wave sent the peak power demand in Delhi up to 6,916 MW on Tuesday, the highest so far this season, officials said.

The city recorded a peak power demand of 7,695 MW last summer and it might reach 8,100 MW this year, they said. The maximum temperature at a few places, including Najafgarh (46.7 degrees Celsius), breached the 46-degree mark for the second consecutive day on Tuesday.

The Safdarjung Observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 43.5 degrees Celsius -- three notches above normal.

The mercury had soared to 45.1 degrees Celsius at Ridge in central Delhi, 45.2 degrees at Jafarpur, 45.2 degrees at Narela, 46.1 degrees at Pitampura, 45.7 degrees at Pusa, and 46.2 degrees at Sports Complex.

The threshold for a heat wave is met when the maximum temperature of a station reaches at least 40 degrees Celsius in the plains, 37 degrees in the coastal areas, and 30 degrees in the hilly regions, and the departure from normal is at least 4.5 degrees.

Earlier this month, the weather office had predicted below-normal maximum temperatures and fewer heatwave days in northwest India in May.

With the IMD anticipating a slight delay in the arrival of the southwest monsoon, the maximum temperatures are likely to remain above normal for a longer-than-usual period.

Heat waves in India are becoming more frequent and severe due to climate change, with over 90 per cent of the country in the 'extremely cautious' category or 'danger zone' of their impacts, according to a study conducted at the University of Cambridge.

The study also revealed that Delhi is particularly vulnerable to severe heatwave impacts despite its recent state action plan for climate change failing to reflect this fact.

Mumbai BJP Chief Visits Sharad Pawar Before Latter's Arvind Kejriwal Meet

Bharatiya Janata Party's Mumbai unit chief and MLA Ashish Shelar on Wednesday called on Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar at the latter's residence in south Mumbai.

What transpired at the meeting, however, could not be known.

The meeting between the two leaders assumes significance as Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is scheduled to meet the NCP chief in the city on Thursday. Mr Kejriwal, who met Shiv Sena (UBT) president on Wednesday, is seeking support of different political parties and leaders for the Aam Aadmi Party's fight against the Centre's ordinance on control of services in Delhi.

Although Mr Shelar and Mr Pawar belong to rival parties, they have been on the same page when it comes to controlling the cricket boards of Mumbai or the apex body of the sports. Mr Shelar, a BJP MLA from Bandra West, has been in the world of cricket politics for almost a decade, while Mr Pawar had earlier served as the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the International Cricket Council (ICC), and the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA).

India, Australia Aim To Conclude Comprehensive Trade Deal By End Of 2023

Sydney: India and Australia on Wednesday inked a migration and mobility partnership pact to open up opportunities for students, academic researchers and business people and resolved to conclude a comprehensive trade deal by the end of the year to significantly expand economic ties.

The pact was signed after wide-ranging talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese.

In his media statement, Mr Albanese said the aim is to conclude the comprehensive economic cooperation agreement (CECA) by the end of the year.

"We reiterated our shared ambition for an early conclusion of the Australia-India comprehensive economic cooperation agreement later this year," he said in the presence of Modi.

Last year, India and Australia finalised the Economic Cooperation Trade Agreement (ECTA) and it came into force in December last. The two sides are now working on the CECA.

"Today, in my meeting with Prime Minister Albanese, we talked about taking India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership to greater heights in the next decade," Modi said.

"We discussed in detail the possibilities of cooperation in new areas. Last year India-Australia ECTA came into effect. Today we have decided to focus on CECA -- Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement," he said.

PM Modi said the pact will give further strength and new dimensions to trade and economic cooperation between the two countries.

"We had constructive discussions on strengthening our strategic cooperation in the sectors of mining and critical minerals. We have identified concrete areas for cooperation in renewable energy," Modi said.

"It was decided to set up a task force on Green Hydrogen," he added.

Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said the next two rounds of talks on the economic partnership pact have been scheduled for June and July.

Modi and Albanese also witnessed the signing of the terms of reference of the Australia-India Green Hydrogen Taskforce which will explore opportunities in the area of renewable hydrogen.

"Renewable energy was once again a focus and an important topic in our discussions," Albanese said.

On the migration and mobility pact, Albanese said it will promote the exchange of students, graduates, researchers and business people; expand our people-to-people ties and enhance cooperation in "preventing people smuggling".

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said Modi and Albanese welcomed the signing of the Migration and Mobility Partnership Arrangement (MMPA).

It said the MMPA will further facilitate the mobility of students, professionals, researchers, academics and others, including through a new skilled pathway named MATES (Mobility Arrangement for Talented Early Professionals Scheme) specifically created for India.

It said they also welcomed the finalisation of terms of reference for the India-Australia Hydrogen taskforce.

The task force will advise on opportunities to accelerate the manufacture and deployment of clean hydrogen, focusing on hydrogen electrolysers, and fuel cells as well as supporting infrastructure and standards and regulations.

In his remarks, Modi also highlighted the importance of India-Australia relations for the region.

"The scope of India-Australia relations is not limited to merely our two countries. It is also linked to regional stability, peace and global welfare," he said.

"A few days ago, along with Prime Minister Albanese, at the Quad Summit in Hiroshima, we also discussed the Indo-Pacific. India-Australia cooperation can also be beneficial for the progress of the Global South," Modi said.

He said the Indian tradition of "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, which sees the whole world as one family, is the central theme of India's G-20 Presidency." The prime minister described his meeting with Albanese as "constructive".

Money Laundering Case: Court Allows Actor Jacqueline Fernandez To Travel Abroad

A Delhi court today allowed Bollywood actor Jacqueline Fernandez, accused in a money laundering case also involving alleged conman Sukesh Chandrasekar, to travel abroad from May 25 to June 12.

Special Judge Shailendra Malik allowed the application moved by Ms Fernandez claiming she needed to travel to Abu Dhabi from May 25 to May 27 to attend IIFA Awards.

The judge also allowed her to travel to Milan, Italy from May 28 to June 12 after the actress said she was required to participate in the shooting of a film.

The court had on November 15 last year granted bail to Fernandez, who is an accused in the case but was not arrested.

The Enforcement Directorate had lodged the case based on an FIR filed by Delhi Police's Economic Offences Wing (EOW) against Sukesh Chandrasekhar, who has been accused of cheating and extorting money from Aditi Singh, the wife of former promoter of Religare Enterprises Shivinder Mohan Singh.

Shivinder Mohan Singh was arrested in October 2019 in a case related to alleged misappropriation of funds at Religare Finvest Ltd.

Sukesh Chandrasekhar and his associates reportedly took money from Aditi after posing as government officials and promising to secure bail for her husband.

Sukesh Chandrasekhar reportedly persuaded Aditi Singh to transfer money by impersonating a central government official over a spoof call while he was lodged in Rohini jail.

Ms Fernandez is accused of laundering money in the case.
