Paytm CEO Raises Concern After OpenAI's Blog On 'Human Extinction'. Read His Post

Paytm CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma has raised concerns after a blog post by ChatGPT creator OpenAI. The blog post expressed the inability to have a solution for controlling a superintelligent AI and preventing it from going rogue. It also said that superintelligent AI can lead to disempowerment and even possibly human extinction.

Vijay Shekhar Sharma tweeted, " Here is the OpenAI blog post done this week: In less than 7 years we have a system that may lead to the disempowerment of humanity and even human extinction. I am genuinely concerned with the power some set of people and select countries have accumulated - already."

The OpenAI blog post said: "Superintelligence will be the most impactful technology humanity has ever invented and could help us solve many of the world's most important problems. But the vast power of superintelligence could also be very dangerous and could lead to the disempowerment of humanity or even human extinction. While superintelligence seems far off now, we believe it could arrive this decade."

See the post here:

Superintelligent AI - systems more intelligent than humans - could arrive this decade, the blog post's authors predicted. Humans will need better techniques than currently available to be able to control the superintelligent AI, hence the need for breakthroughs in so-called "alignment research," which focuses on ensuring AI remains beneficial to humans, according to the authors.

OpenAI, backed by Microsoft, is dedicating 20 per cent of the computing power it has secured over the next four years to solve this problem, they wrote. In addition, the company is forming a new team that will organise around this effort, called the Superalignment team.

The team's goal is to create a "human-level" AI alignment researcher, and then scale it through vast amounts of compute power. OpenAI says that means they will train AI systems using human feedback, train AI systems to assist human evaluation, and then finally train AI systems to actually do the alignment research.

AI safety advocates Connor Leahy said the plan was fundamentally flawed because the initial human-level AI could run amok and wreak havoc before it could be compelled to solve AI safety problems.

"You have to solve alignment before you build human-level intelligence, otherwise by default, you won't control it," he said in an interview. "I personally do not think this is a particularly good or safe plan."

The potential dangers of AI have been top of mind for both AI researchers and the general public. In April, a group of AI industry leaders and experts signed an open letter calling for a six-month pause in developing systems more powerful than OpenAI's GPT-4, citing potential risks to society. A May Reuters/Ipsos poll found that more than two-thirds of Americans are concerned about the possible negative effects of AI and 61 percent believe it could threaten civilisation.

Video: Road At Delhi Minister Atishi's House Flooded BJP Takes A Swipe

The road in front of the official residence of Delhi minister Atishi was flooded after two days of heavy rain. Visuals show the water entered the property's front area behind the gate.

Atishi, the Public Works Department (PWD) Minister, had been going on rounds of the city to meet engineers and inspect flooded areas.

"Rain has broken the record of decades. Due to such a torrential rain, Ring Road near ITO is flooded despite having a pumping station," Atishi tweeted in Hindi.

She said she has asked engineers to increase the number of pumps to drain out a larger volume water faster from the area.

Heavy rain bettered Delhi for two days. The weather office said it was the highest 24-hour rainfall in the national capital in 40 years.

Delhi BJP chief Virendraa Sachdeva tweeted many areas in the city were flooded due to poor infrastructure development under the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

"Corruption in the Kejriwal government is so rampant that the bungalow of PWD Minister Atishi on the recently renovated Mathura Road has been submerged," Mr Sachdeva tweeted along with a video that shows the front area of Atishi's home.

Several residential areas in Delhi were flooded. Cars were seen submerged at many places too. Commuters complained of difficulty in reaching their destinations as water accumulated on the roads, especially under flyovers.

Three people were killed and three others were missing after a vehicle hit by a landslide fell into the Ganga River in Tehri Garhwal district on Sunday, officials said.

The vehicle was carrying 11 people, including the driver, police said, adding five of them were rescued and admitted to a government hospital in Rishikesh. They were on their way to Rishikesh from Kedarnath.

Personnel of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local police have reached the spot and a rescue and relief operation is underway, Inspector Ritesh Shah, in-charge of Muni Ki Reti Police Station said.

Inspector Kavendra Sajwan of the SDRF said three bodies have been fished out from the river while a team of divers is conducting an operation to find the other passengers.

The victims were residents of Delhi, Bihar, and Hyderabad, he said.

According to police, the accident took place in the Muni Ki Reti area on the Rishikesh-Badrinath National Highway.

The driver lost control of the car after it was hit by a landslide. It then skidded off the road and fell into the Ganga River, Shah said Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has urged people to be vigilant because of landslides due to heavy rains and overflowing rivers.

Biden Begins 3-Nation Tour With Focus On NATO Summit 1st Stop London

US President Joe Biden departed on Sunday on a three-nation trip that will be dominated by a NATO summit in Lithuania aimed at showing solidarity with Ukraine in its fight against Russia while not yet accepting Kyiv as a member of the alliance.

Biden's first stop will be in London, where he will meet British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak at 10 Downing Street on Monday and then travel to Windsor Castle for a visit with King Charles.

The talks with the king, expected to include climate initiatives, will give Biden a greater sense of the man who succeeded his mother, Queen Elizabeth, who died last September.

Biden had tea with the queen at Windsor in June 2021 and they discussed many of the same issues that remain a top priority today, like Russia and China.

Biden will travel on to Vilnius, Lithuania, on Monday night and hold talks with NATO leaders there on Tuesday and Wednesday. Biden and the allies aim to show support for Ukraine and give Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy a sense of what he will have to do to gain NATO membership at some point in the future.

In a CNN interview previewing his trip, Biden urged caution for now on Ukraine's drive to join NATO, saying the alliance could get drawn into the war with Russia due to NATO's mutual defense pact.

"I don't think there is unanimity in NATO about whether or not to bring Ukraine into the NATO family now, at this moment, in the middle of a war," Biden said.

A centerpiece of Biden's visit to Lithuania will be a speech that he will deliver at Vilnius University on Wednesday night.

White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters the speech will cover Biden's vision of "a strong, confident America flanked by strong, confident allies and partners taking on the significant challenges of our time, from Russia's aggression in Ukraine to the climate crisis."

One of Biden's objectives on the trip is to show Americans back home the importance of continuing support for Ukraine as he faces re-election. Some of his Republican rivals in the race for the November 2024 presidential elections have voiced doubts about his strategy.

Solid majorities of Americans support providing weaponry to Ukraine to defend itself against Russia and believe that such aid demonstrates to China and other US rivals a will to protect US interests and allies, according to a Reuters/Ipsos survey late last month.

Biden's last stop will be in Helsinki for talks with the leaders of the newest NATO member, Finland, and to attend a summit of US and Nordic leaders.
