Biden By His Side PM Recalls 1st Time He Saw White House "From Outside"

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on his first state visit to the US, arrived at the White House today to a grand welcome. He thanked Biden for the warm welcome and said, "The grand welcome at the White House is an honour and pride for the 140 crore Indians. This is also an honour for the Indian community in the US".

During his address, the Prime Minister also recalled the first time he saw the White House during his visit to the United States 30 years ago.

"Nearly three decades ago, I visited America as a common man. I saw the White House from the outside back then," he said.

After becoming the Prime Minister, I have come here many times. But, this is for the first time, doors have been opened for the Indian community here in such large numbers," PM Modi said amid cheers from the crowd gathered on the South Lawn of the White House.

PM Modi and Biden also had a one-on-one meeting in the Oval Office of the White House before delegation-level talks.

In his remarks at the ceremony, PM Modi said he will soon hold talks with Biden and discuss regional and global issues: "I am sure our talks will be positive."

During his address, President Biden described the relationship between the US and India is one of the most defining relationships in the 21st century.

This would be the second interaction between the two leaders within 24 hours.

President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden hosted Prime Minister Modi for an intimate dinner at the White House a day earlier during which they discussed a range of issues, exchanged gifts and enjoyed a musical tribute to the regions of India.

Later Thursday, they will host a State Dinner, which is expected to be attended by 400 guests.

PM Modi's visit also includes an address by him to the joint session of the US Congress.

"This afternoon, I will have the opportunity to address the US Congress for the 2nd time. I am thankful for that," he said.

The Prime Minister arrived in Washington from New York where he led a historic event at the UN headquarters earlier in the day to commemorate the 9th International Day of Yoga, attended by UN officials, diplomats and prominent personalities.

He is visiting the US from June 21-24 at the invitation of President Biden and the First Lady.

22 Indian Fishermen Arrested For Allegedly Poaching In Sri Lankan Waters

The Sri Lankan Navy has arrested 22 Indian fishermen on board four trawlers for allegedly poaching in the country's territorial waters northwest of Delft Island, Jaffna, officials said on Thursday.

"The Sri Lanka Navy conducted a special operation to chase away Indian trawlers engaged in illegal fishing in Sri Lankan waters late on Wednesday", a statement by Lanka Navy said.

The fishermen from Tamil Nadu, reportedly hailing from Ramanathapuram, Pudukottai and Nagapattinam districts, were picked up from near Neduntheevu late on Wednesday, and four boats were also seized, it said.

They were later taken to Kankesanthurai harbour and handed over to the Mailadi Fisheries Inspector for further legal action.

The Navy conducts regular patrols and operations in Sri Lankan waters to curb illegal fishing practices of foreign fishing trawlers.

Dr S Ramadoss, founder of the political party Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) in Tamil Nadu, has slammed the arrest of the fishermen from the state by the Sri Lankan Navy.

In a tweet, he said an Indo-Lanka joint panel formed to discuss various matters, including the fishermen issue, should be convened immediately to find a lasting solution to the apprehension of Indian fishers.

The fishermen issue is a contentious one in the ties between India and Sri Lanka, with the Lankan Navy personnel even firing at Indian fishermen in the Palk Strait and seizing their boats in several alleged incidents of illegally entering Sri Lankan's territorial waters.

The Palk Strait, which is a narrow strip of water separating Tamil Nadu from Sri Lanka, is a rich fishing ground for fishermen from both countries.

There have been periodic instances of Indian fishermen being apprehended by Sri Lankan authorities for allegedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line and fishing in Sri Lankan waters.

Illegal fishing in the Sri Lankan waters by Indian fishermen has been a recurrent problem despite many high-level talks held between the two sides.

India and the US can shape the course of the 21st Century, US President Joe Biden said on Thursday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived at the White House on his first state visit, initiating high-level talks aimed at bolstering the burgeoning Indo-US strategic ties in areas such as defence, space, clean energy, and advanced technologies.

"Two great nations, two great powers, two great friends can define the course of the 21st century," Mr Biden said.

The President highlighted the importance of the decisions both countries make today and their impact on future generations. He noted that the US and India are working closely on a range of critical issues, including healthcare, climate change, and the challenges arising from Russia's aggression towards Ukraine.

Mr Biden also acknowledged the importance of religious freedom as a core principle for both nations. Cash-Strapped Pakistan To Lease Part Of Karachi Port To UAE For $220 Million

AD Ports Group of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) signed an agreement Thursday to take over the running of part of Pakistan's main Karachi docking facility in a deal worth an immediate $220 million, the company said.

The deal will come as a shot in the arm for Pakistan, with the economy on the brink of collapse and the government desperate for big-ticket foreign investment to help service crippling debt.

AD Ports Group has formed a joint venture with another UAE company, Kaheel Terminals, to take over berths from Karachi Port Trust (KPT), the state-owned handling agency.

Karachi Port is Pakistan's oldest and busiest, with 33 berths, and the UAE deal will see the joint venture lease four of them for the next 50 years.

"The JV will undertake significant investments in infrastructure and superstructure over the next 10 years," an AD Group statement said.

Plans include deepening the berths to allow for bigger ships to dock, extending the quay wall, and increasing the container storage area. As a result, the terminal will be able to handle ships capable of carrying up to 8,500 containers, and capacity will increase from 750,000 to a million containers a year, the statement said.

The bulk of development is planned for 2026.

The UAE is a major contributor to Pakistan's economy in the form of grants, loans and direct investment, and has previously bailed out a government that for months has been on the brink of defaulting on its debt.
