Ex-Fireman In Mumbai Set Wife On Fire For Dowry, Jailed For Life

A sessions court here sentenced a 33-year-old former fireman to rigorous imprisonment for life for setting his wife on fire after harassing her for dowry in suburban Mulund six years ago.

Additional sessions judge A B Sharma on Wednesday found the accused Lakhan Gaikwad guilty of offences committed under relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code for murder and subjecting his wife to cruelty.

The details of the order were made available on Friday.

According to the prosecution, led by special public prosecutor Geeta Sharma, Gaikwad had physically and mentally harassed his wife Manisha.

In October 2017, the accused set the victim on fire by pouring thinner on her and killed her, it said.

Gaikwad was arrested a day after the incident and has been in judicial custody since then.

The victim's mother, in her testimony, had informed the court that at the time of marriage, the accused had demanded Rs 1 lakh as dowry, which she could not pay.

Gaikwad and his family started torturing Manisha. They starved the victim and were not providing her clothes, she said.

The court has acquitted four other accused in the case, including the victim's in-laws, for want of evidence.

The accused was sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for life and a fine of Rs 7,000 was imposed on him.

PM To Visit Key Gujjar Area In Rajasthan. Not Political, Says BJP Leader

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Malaseri in Rajasthan's Bhilwara tomorrow on the 1111th birth anniversary of Bhagwan Dev Narayan.

Though this visit has been organised by the culture ministry, it comes 10 months before the assembly election in Rajasthan.

Malaseri is the birthplace of Bhagwan Dev Narayan, greatly revered in the area, especially among the Gujjars, who are now an important source of support for the election for both the BJP and the Congress.

In the last election, the BJP had given tickets to nine people from the Gujjar community. They all lost as the Gujjar vote shifted to the Congress in the hope that Sachin Pilot would become the first Gujjar Chief Minister of Rajasthan.

But that expectation has been belied and PM Modi's visit appears to be the BJP's strategic outreach to Gujjars bank through a religious programme.

"The Prime Minister has undertaken a number of projects for religious and cultural restoration like the Kashi Vishwanath temple and the Ujjain temple. Hopefully, something will be done for the Dev Narayan temple as well. We should not look at everything through a political lens," Satish Poonia, BJP state president, told NDTV.

The Gujjars are about 9 per cent to 12 per cent of the population in the state and they are significant in 40 to 50 assembly seats in eastern Rajasthan.

The Gujjars have in the past launched violent protests for reservation and had recently threatened to block Congress leader Rahul Gandhi s entry into the state.

"What happened last time will not happen again. Last time, the Gujjars lost and now they have learnt their lesson. Of course we want Gujjar MLAs. Gujjars influence about 40 seats. Let's see what the impact will be," Vijay Bainsla, who has taken on the mantle of the Gujjar reservation movement after the death of his father, Colonel Kirori Singh, told NDTV at the Dev Narayan temple.

Sachin Pilot is an individual factor and it cannot repeat in every election, Mr Bainsla said.

Attempt Being Made To "Make Judiciary Part Of PM's Office": Congress

Attacking the government, the Congress on Friday alleged that an "undeclared emergency" prevailed in the country and an attempt was being made to "make the judiciary part of the PMO".

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said the Bharat Jodo Yatra is aimed at highlighting such "dangers" facing the country.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr Ramesh said the yatra is aimed at flagging increasing economic disparity, the RSS and the BJP allegedly spreading social polarisation for electoral advantage and the "political dictatorship" prevailing in the country.

"There is an undeclared emergency in the country. There is rule by one person, Parliament is being ignored, debates don't take place in Parliament. One example is of the danger on our borders, two-and-a-half years have passed but it has not been discussed," Mr Ramesh said, referring to the border standoff between India and China.

"Constitution is being ignored, constitutional bodies are being weakened and an attempt is being made to destroy the judiciary. Everyday comments are being made, there is an attempt to make the judiciary part of the PMO (Prime Minister's Office)," he alleged.

His remarks come in the backdrop of a raging debate on the issue of appointments to the higher judiciary with the government questioning the current collegium system and the Supreme Court defending it.

At the press conference, Mr Ramesh said, "So this question why is the Congress out to unite India when nobody is breaking the country, we are saying it is getting divided, there are dangers and if we don't act, the dangers will increase. So we are raising our voice against economic disparities, social polarisation and political dictatorship. We are taking on the BJP and the RSS ideologically. Election strategy has nothing to do with the yatra."

"There are two ways -- one way is of the RSS-BJP and according to their path they are using the cannon of 'one person, one system' and the other way is the way of harmony, the way of the Congress, the way of Mahatma Gandhi, the way of Rahul Gandhi, where the 'shehnaai' of democracy is being played.... These are the two ways that are before our country," he said.

The Bharat Jodo Yatra led by Rahul Gandhi started from Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu on September 7. It will culminate with Mr Gandhi unfurling the national flag at the party headquarters in Srinagar and addressing a grand rally at the Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium on January 30.
