UK's Rishi Sunak To Recite Bible Verse At King Charles' Coronation

Rishi Sunak will read from the biblical book of Colossians at the Coronation of King Charles III in keeping with the recent tradition of British Prime Ministers giving readings at State occasions, the office of the Archbishop of Canterbury revealed as part of the official Liturgy for the religious ceremony at Westminster Abbey here on May 6.

Rishi Sunak, Britain's first Prime Minister of Indian heritage and a practicing Hindu, reading from a biblical book will resonate with the multi-faith theme being struck for the Christian ceremony.

Lambeth Palace, the office of the Archbishop of Canterbury - Reverend Justin Welby, said that members of other faith traditions will play an active role in the service for the first time.

"The Archbishop of Canterbury has selected a new Epistle for this Coronation, which will be Colossians 1:9-17. This passage has been chosen to reflect the theme of service to others, and the loving rule of Christ over all people and all things, which runs through this Coronation Liturgy," Lambeth Palace said.

"Following recent tradition of British Prime Ministers giving readings at State occasions - as Head of the host Nation's government - this will be read by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak," it said.

By longstanding tradition, the Archbishop of Canterbury authorises a new Liturgy - or the form according to which a public religious worship takes place - for every Coronation. The three oaths the King at the heart of the service remain unchanged, including the promise to maintain "the Protestant Reformed Religion".

The overall theme of the Liturgy is "Called to Serve", which is intended to reflect the commitment that the King will make to serve God and the people of the United Kingdom.

"I am delighted that the service will recognise and celebrate tradition, speaking to the great history of our nation, our customs, and those who came before us. At the same time, the service contains new elements that reflect the diversity of our contemporary society," said Welby.

His office said the service has been designed to reflect the changes in the UK since Charles' mother Queen Elizabeth II's Coronation in 1953, the character of Britain as it is today, and the Church of England's role in contemporary society. As one of the newer elements, the 74-year-old monarch will pray aloud in the Abbey using words specially written for the occasion that reflect the "duty and privilege of the Sovereign to serve all communities".

Lambeth Palace confirmed that the Presentation of the Regalia will be made by Members of the House of Lords and for the first time, some of the items which have no Christian meaning or symbolism will be presented by peers who belong to different faith traditions: Judaism, Islam, Hinduism and Sikhism.

Buckingham Palace had previously confirmed that Lord Narendra Babubhai Patel, 84, will represent the Hindu faith and hand over the Sovereign's Ring to Charles. While Lord Indrajit Singh, 90, will represent the Sikh faith and present the Coronation Glove, Lord Syed Kamall, 56, of Indo-Guyanese heritage, will represent the Muslim faith and present the Armills or a pair of bracelets.

"At the end of the procession at the close of the service, before His Majesty proceeds to the Gold State Coach, the King will receive and acknowledge a spoken greeting delivered in unison by Representatives from Jewish, Hindu, Sikh, Muslim and Buddhist communities," Lambeth Palace said.

The thousands congregated at the Abbey and millions expected to be watching on screens as the ceremony is telecast live will be invited to say the words: "I swear that I will pay true allegiance to Your Majesty, and to your heirs and successors according to law - so help me God".

The five elements of the historic "English Coronation Rite" will take place in their traditional order: The Recognition; The Oath; The Anointing; The Investiture and Crowning; and The Enthronement and Homage.

These elements will take place within the traditional structure of a service of Holy Communion, including prayers and Bible readings, and King Charles and Queen Camilla will receive Holy Communion during the service.

UP Woman Killed In Clash Between Relatives Over Bike-Cycle Collision

A woman was killed while her husband injured in a clash between two groups over a minor accident in a village in Uttar Pradesh's Amethi, police said on Sunday.

The dead has been identified as Ramrati (30), they said.

On Saturday evening, Ram Bahadur's motorcycle collided with Hiralal's bicycle and a clash broke out between them, SHO (Amethi) Arun Dwivedi.

The fight escalated as relatives of both Bahadur and Hiralal reached the spot, he said.

Mr Bahadur's wife was killed while he was injured in the attack and undergoing treatment at a nearby Community Health Center, he said.

The SHO said that a case has been lodged regarding the matter and the body has been sent for post-mortem examination.

"Sister, I Request You Not To...": Wrestler Vinesh Phogat On Cousin's Tweet

A war of words broke out on Saturday between Phogat cousins Vinesh and Babita with the former asking the latter not to "weaken" the ongoing protest by the wrestlers against WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

The country's top wrestlers, including Vinesh, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, have been protesting since Sunday, demanding criminal action against Singh over alleged sexual harassment and intimidation.

"If you can't stand for the rights of aggrieved female wrestlers, Babita sister, I request you with folded hands not to weaken our movement. It has taken years for female wrestlers to speak up against their abusers. You are also a woman, try to understand our pain," Vinesh tweeted in Hindi.

Babita had earlier tweeted about Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's visit to Jantar Mantar to meet the protesting wrestlers.

"Priyanka Vadra reached Jantar Mantar with her personal secretary Sandeep Singh to seek justice for women wrestlers, but this person himself has been accused of misbehaving women and insulting a Dalit woman," Babita, who contested and lost in the last Haryana Assembly elections from BJP ticket, said in her tweet.

The Delhi Police Friday registered two FIRs in connection with sexual harassment allegations levelled by women wrestlers against WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

The first FIR pertains to allegations levelled by a minor which has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act along with relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code concerning outraging modesty.

The second FIR has been registered for carrying out comprehensive investigations into the complaints by adult complainants under relevant IPC sections pertaining to outraging of modesty.

Egypt Slams Netflix For Depicting Cleopatra As Black Woman In New Drama-Documentary

The Egyptian government has accused Netflix of misrepresenting history by casting a Black woman to play Cleopatra, its most famous historical figure, in an upcoming drama-documentary 'Queen Cleopatra'.

The four-part series, which is set to be released on May 10, features Adele James - an actor of mixed heritage - in the lead role. This move has enraged Egyptian experts who insist that the pharaonic leader had "white skin and Hellenistic characteristics". According to The Guardian, the Egyptian government issued a lengthy statement that included opinions from experts that, it said, agree on Cleopatra's skin colour and facial features. 

"The appearance of the heroine in this body is a falsification of Egyptian history and a blatant historical misconception, especially that the film is classified as a documentary and not a drama," the statement read. 

Mostafa Waziri, head of the Supreme Antiquities Council, further said that there was nothing racist in this view as it is motivated by "defending the history of Queen Cleopatra, an important part of the history of Egypt in antiquity".

"Archaeologists and anthropologists should have been referred to when making such kind of documentary and historical films that will remain a witness on civilizations and history of nations," Mr Waziri added, noting that there are many Queen Cleopatra's artefacts and depictions on coins that confirm its true shape and features, which show Queen Cleopatra's Hellenic (Greek) features, in terms of light complexion, drawn nose, and fluffy lips.

The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities slammed Netflix's classification of the upcoming productions as a documentary, saying that it "requires those in charge of its production to investigate the accuracy and rely on historical and scientific facts". They argue that the series should instead be reclassified as a drama. 

Meanwhile, Netflix, earlier this week, stated that Adele James' ethnicity is not the focus of the series. "We did intentionally decide to depict her of mixed ethnicity to reflect theories about Cleopatra's possible Egyptian ancestry and the multicultural nature of ancient Egypt, the streaming service giant said, as per the outlet. 

Cleopatra was born in the Egyptian city of Alexandria in 69 BC and became the last queen of a Greek-speaking dynasty founded by Alexander the Great's Macedonian general Ptolemy. She succeeded her father Ptolemy XII in 51 BC and ruled until her death in 30 BC. Afterwards, Egypt fell under Roman domination.

Madhya Pradesh Woman Mauled To Death By Stray Dogs: Cops

A 55-year-old woman was mauled to death by a pack of stray dogs at a village in Madhya Pradesh's Seoni district on Saturday, police said. The incident took place at Mundrai village under Kanhiwada police station limits, around 20 km from the district headquarters, an official said.

"A post-mortem conducted on the woman's body revealed that she had sustained deep wounds from animal bites. The doctor who conducted the procedure has said that the woman may have died due to dog bites. No other injury marks were found on the body," Kanhilwada police station in-charge Monis Singh Bais told PTI.

The picture will become clearer once the forensic report arrives, he said.

According to the victim's relative, a pack of stray dogs was around a tree when the woman was heading towards a field at around 7 am on Saturday.

Later, some passersby spotted the dogs eating the body and informed villagers and the Kanhiwada police, he said.

Forest officials were also intimated about the violent attack on the woman.

Seoni's sub-divisional officer of forest Yogesh Patel told PTI that the manner in which the woman's flesh had been eaten, it didn't appear to be an attack by wild animals.

There is no forest in the 5 km radius from the spot of the incident, he said.

Meanwhile, some villagers have alleged that the Seoni Municipal Council caught stray dogs in the city and released them near the village.

Chief Municipal Officer (CMO) of Seoni R K Karveti, however, told PTI that no campaign against stray dogs was carried out in the city recently.

10% Of Crop Damage Compensation Will Go To Farm Labourers: Punjab Chief Minister

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday said 10 per cent of the total compensation for crop damage due to any natural calamity will now go to farm labourers in the state.

Speaking after holding a Cabinet meeting here as part of his government's 'Sarkar Tuhade Dwar' (government at your doorstep) programme, Mann said the decision was taken keeping in mind the problems faced by farm labourers, who lose work and income when a crop gets damaged due to heavy rain or hailstorm.

Mr Mann said this decision is a gift to the working class, who toil to produce crops, ahead of the Labour Day on May 1.

The first Cabinet meeting under the 'Sarkar Tuhade Dwar' programme was held at the Circuit House in Ludhiana, about 100 km from Chandigarh.

Mr Mann said most Cabinet meetings will now be held outside Chandigarh as it will give officials and ministers a chance to take feedback from people, listen to their grievances and address them on the spot.

He said Cabinet meetings will now be held in places like Moga, Mansa, Hoshiarpur and even in a large village. The government representatives will spend a day wherever it is held, he said at a press conference flanked by his ministers.

"We have decided that whatever compensation government will give to farmers for crop damage due to unseasonal rain or hailstorm, out of the total, 10 per cent will be given to farm labourers," Mr Mann said.

"For example, if Rs 15,000 a acre is given as compensation, Rs 1,500 will be given to the labourers who were to work in the fields but could not as the crop got damaged because of the rain," the chief minister said.

The chief minister said his government will soon start a drive to register the labourers so that they can get benefits from the various central and state-sponsored schemes.

"We have directed our officers to visit labour chowks, construction sites and rural areas and meet labourers there and get them registered on the spot," Mr Mann said.

"In the coming days, we will bring many pro-Punjab, pro-people initiatives," he said.

Targeting previous governments, he said, "We don't leave any files pending. Earlier, files were pending for 2-3 years," he claimed. "We are bringing the state back on the track of developmental so that Punjab once again becomes 'rangla (vibrant)."

The Cabinet also gave consent for sending the plea of six prisoners convicted for life, seeking premature release, to Governor Banwarilal Purohit for consideration and approval, according to an official statement.

It approved the revision of pay scales of teachers in Punjab Agricultural University with effect from January 1, 2016. The disbursement of salary and pension to these employees will take place from April 2023.

It accorded consent to create a new block - named Ramdas - by taking out 75 gram panchayats from Ajnala block in Amritsar district. The creation Ramdas block will give a boost to developmental activities in these 75 villages, the statement added.

"Check My Call Records": Coach Denies "Threat, Bribe Offer" To Wrestlers

Dismissing the allegation that he has threatened the sexually harassed wrestlers and their families on behalf of WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, coach Mahavir Prasad Bishnoi on Thursday said he is ready to be hanged if proved guilty.

Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia in their recent media interaction claimed that Bishnoi and the secretary general of Haryana wrestling association, Rakesh, have not only threatened the victims but also offered them bribe to "keep quiet".

"You can check my call records and my locations in the last few days. There is no truth in these allegations. I don't even know who the victims are. If it's proved that I am involved in giving threat calls, I am ready to be hanged," Bishnoi told PTI.

"I was in Hisar for a wedding with my family when the protest began. How could I have gone and met the victims' family. I am sure someone at the protest site is feeding the wrestlers with misinformation.

"These wrestlers know me for years. If someone said to them, taking my name, they should have called me for clarification, instead of levelling baseless allegations against me," he fumed.

Bishnoi said he has no ill intentions towards anyone and that he is being dragged into this because he chose not to stand by the wrestlers' side at the protest site.

"Bajrang had called me and requested to join the protest and I refused politely by saying that I want to stay neutral. I quit my CISF job, purely for my passion for wrestling, and joined the national camp to help prepare the wrestlers.

"And I have delivered, giving results as Greco Roman coach at National Centre of Excellence (NCOE) at SAI centre in Sonepat. I was there for 16 months. I am into all these things. I don't know why they are dragging me into this." It may be mentioned that SAI recently called Bishnoi for the national camp, but a day after he joined the centre in Sonepat, he was asked to leave.

Explaining the incident, Bishnoi said, "The SAI issued a list of coaches who were to join the national camp in January. I joined the camp on January 17 and was even allotted a room but the SAI created a new list the next day and my name was removed without providing any reason.

"I have asked SAI officials several times but no one gave me an answer. They just said no decision has been taken on my salary since my contract is to be renewed. But then, why did you place my name in the coaches' list in the first place?," he asked.

Court Likely To Give Order On Manish Sisodia's Bail Request Tomorrow

A court in Delhi is likely to deliver on Friday its order on the bail application of former Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia in a money laundering case related to the alleged excise policy scam.

Special Judge M K Nagpal had reserved the order after hearing arguments on Sisodia's plea seeking relief claiming that his custody was no longer required for investigation.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had opposed the application, asserting the investigation was at a "crucial" stage and claiming the senior AAP leader had planted fabricated e-mails to show there was public approval for the policy.

The federal agency had also said it has found fresh evidence of his complicity in the alleged crime.

The court had on March 31 dismissed Sisodia's bail application in a corruption case, being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), saying he was "prima facie the architect" in the criminal conspiracy behind alleged payment of advance kickbacks of around Rs 90-100 crore meant for him and his colleagues in the Delhi government.

The court had observed that the release of Sisodia, at the moment, will "adversely affect the ongoing investigation".

The CBI and the ED had arrested Sisodia for alleged corruption in the formulation and execution of the now-scrapped Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22 and for laundering the money so generated.

Route Where Maoists Targeted Cops Wasn't Cleared By Road-Opening Patrol

Questions have been raised over why a road-opening patrol did not sanitise the route that a convoy of policemen took today before Maoists ambushed them with an improvised explosive device (IED) in Chhattisgarh's Dantewada.

Ten policemen of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and a driver who were in travelling in a rented van - the third vehicle in the convoy - were killed in the attack.

A road-opening patrol usually consists of a small, nimble team that checks a route for a possible ambush and clears other threats ahead of the main convoy's arrival. Such a patrol did not clear the road that the convoy took today in the Maoist-infested forest in Dantewada as a local festival popular with children called 'Ama Pandum' was being celebrated some 100 metres from the ambush site, people with direct knowledge of the matter said.

While vehicles often speed on the road that cuts through the forested area, they slow down whenever the festival is held since many children tend to be around. The festival involves children asking for money from elders and passers-by to buy mangoes, hence the name 'Ama Pandum'.

The DRG convoy slowed down on this stretch today due to the festival, people with direct knowledge of the matter told NDTV.

The Maoists may have forced the locals to hold the festival near the ambush site so that they can carry out the attack since the convoy would be travelling at a slower speed, people familiar with the matter said, asking not to be identified.

The road-opening patrols used to walk down the route they want to sanitise or ride two-wheelers, but they have been using four-wheelers for the past few months, sources said.

The DRG's operations manual, however, do not recommend road-opening patrols and other field teams to use four-wheelers, sources said.

The Maoists used a massive 50-kg IED to attack the convoy, which flung the van that has no ballistic protection at least 20 feet in the air. The debris of the destroyed van also fell 150 metres from the blast site.

Visuals of the ambush site in Dantewada district show a big crater - 10 feet deep and 20 feet wide - that covers the road's entire width, indicating the Maoists used a huge quantity of explosives to trigger the ambush.

The Maoists appeared to have fled the area immediately after the attack as they did not take the weapons that the policemen had been carrying. In past attacks, Maoist often looted weapons after an ambush.

The DRG team was returning after conducting an anti-Maoist operation when the attack happened.

The special security forces tasked with combating Maoists are looking for the attackers, who have disappeared in the jungle, sources said, adding the area is a tri-junction of three states.

The Maoist attack appears to be a desperate attempt to assert control in the area as they are already in a retreat due to intense and consistent operations by the security forces, which have achieved a string of successes against the Maoists in recent times.

Over 400 Maoists have been surrendering every year following the government's rehabilitation policy, Sundarraj P, Inspector General of Police of Bastar range, told news agency ANI.

He said most of the Maoist leaders left now are usually from states outside Chhattisgarh such as Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the "sacrifice" of the policemen "will always be remembered".

"Strongly condemn the attack on the Chhattisgarh police in Dantewada. I pay my tributes to the brave personnel we lost in the attack. Their sacrifice will always be remembered. My condolences to the bereaved families," PM Modi tweeted.

Today's attack came a week after Maoists fired at the convoy of a Congress MLA in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur while he was returning from a public meeting. No one was injured in the attack.

The last major attack by Maoists took place in April 2021 when 22 security personnel were killed in action in the jungles between Bijapur and Sukma districts.

The former Madhya Pradesh CM, who was in Indore to participate in a Congress Seva Dal programme, was responding to a question from the media about Silawat's statement.

Mr Silawat, a resident of Indore, is considered a loyal supporter of Union minister and BJP MP Jyotiraditya Scindia, who quit the Congress in March 2020.

Taking a dig at the state cabinet minister, Mr Singh said the people of his hometown know what he was earlier in terms of wealth and where he stands now.

He said, "You (media) should ask Silawat how did his business become so big and from where he got so much money?" Asked about a comment made by Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra against his party colleague and former CM Kamal Nath, Singh said, "Does any person has the right to choose his or her parents?"

Mr Mishra had said state Congress president Nath and his son Nakul Nath, the Lok Sabha MP from Chhindwara, were born with a golden spoon.

Delhi Shooting: Cops, Lawyers Asked To Brainstorm Over Security At Courts

Following an incident of shooting in a district court premises here earlier this month, the Delhi High Court on Wednesday directed that a meeting of stakeholders, including police and bar representatives, be held to discuss measures in relation to security inside courts.

A bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad asked that the meeting be held within two weeks to come up with suggestions.

The high court was hearing its own suo motu case as well as a petition on the safety and security in court premises following the September 24, 2021, shootout in a courtroom in Rohini district court that killed three persons.

The court was informed that recently there was another incident of shooting in the Saket District Court premises.

On April 21, a 49-year-old debarred lawyer had fired four rounds at a woman and wounded her in the Saket court complex in south Delhi.

Delhi government standing counsel Santosh Kumar Tripathi said all measures were being taken by police authorities to ensure safety and security in courts and a meeting may be held between stakeholders and police officials for any further suggestions.

"Delhi Police is doing fantastic (work). Measures are taken by Delhi Police. Security has been increased," he said.

Let senior police officers and bar associations meet and discuss the steps required for ensuring the safety in court, the court said.

Additional Solicitor General Chetan Sharma said designation of a person should not grant any immunity from going through security checks. "We have to co-operate. Designation should not grant us any immunity from security check," he said.

The high court had on September 30, 2021, initiated on its own a petition concerning security at courts in the national capital following the September 24, 2021, shootout at Rohini Court, saying there was a need for proper and effective deployment of a sufficient number of police personnel in courts.

In a status report filed in the matter, the police had last year informed that to improve the security setup of all seven district courts in the national capital, 997 security personnel, including local police and CAPF, had been deployed there.

It had also said over 2700 CCTVs, 85 baggage scanners, 242 handheld metal detectors and 146 door frame metal detectors had also been installed in the district courts.

As on November 30 last, a total 997 security personnel had been deployed in district courts as opposed to 783 on October 26, 2021, and that a total of 313 such security personnel were also present in the high court besides several door frame metal detectors, hand held metal detectors, CCTV and other facilities, the report had said.

The report had also said that additionally, boom barriers and 59 wireless sets and control rooms for prompt communication had been given at these institutions and every person was subjected to searching and frisking .

The high court had earlier directed the Delhi Police Commissioner to undertake periodical review of security arrangements in courts, based on security audit by an expert team, for the deployment of requisite number of personnel and installation of gadgets.

Jailed gangster Jitendra Gogi and his two assailants posing as lawyers were killed inside the Rohini courtroom on September 24, 2021, in a dramatic shootout that also saw the police fire bullets in retaliation, the officials had said.

Video footage of the incident showed policemen and lawyers rushing out in panic as gunshots rang out inside courtroom number 207.

The two gunmen dressed as lawyers are suspected to be members of rival Tillu gang, an official had said, adding that over 30 shots were fired.

On December 9, 2021, a man was injured in a low-intensity explosion that took place inside a courtroom in Rohini district court, raising questions about security arrangements there.

The matter would be heard next by the high court in July.

Prince William Secretly Settled Hacking Claim For "Huge Sum": Lawsuit

Britain's Prince William has settled a phone-hacking claim against Rupert Murdoch's UK newspaper arm for a "huge sum" after a secret deal struck with Buckingham Palace, lawyers for the heir's brother Prince Harry said in court documents.

Harry, the younger son of King Charles, is suing Murdoch's News Group Newspapers (NGN) at the High Court in London for multiple unlawful acts allegedly committed on behalf of its tabloids, the Sun and now defunct News of the World, from the mid-1990s until 2016.

In preliminary hearings this week, NGN, which has paid out millions of pounds to settle more than a thousand phone-hacking cases, is seeking to strike out claims by the prince and British actor Hugh Grant, arguing they should have taken action sooner.

It also denies anyone from the Sun was involved in any unlawful activity.

In a submission to the court, Harry's legal team said the reason he had not brought action before was because a deal had been agreed between NGN and the "institution" - Buckingham Palace - to hold off any claims until the conclusion of other outstanding phone-hacking litigation.

"In responding to this bid by NGN to prevent his claims going to trial, the claimant has had to make public the details of this secret agreement, as well as the fact that his brother, His Royal Highness, Prince William, has recently settled his claim against NGN behind the scenes," his lawyers said.

In a witness statement, Harry said NGN had settled William's claim "for a huge sum of money in 2020... without any of the public being told, and seemingly with some favourable deal in return for him going 'quietly' so to speak".

Prince William's office said it could not comment on ongoing legal proceedings and NGN had no comment.

During a criminal trial brought against News of the World journalists and others in 2014, its former royal editor Clive Goodman said in the mid-2000s he had hacked the voicemails of Harry as well as those of William, and William's wife Kate.

Her phone was hacked 155 times, William's 35 and Harry's nine times, Mr Goodman said.

In his 31-page statement, Harry railed against senior NGN figures and his own family, who he has accused of being in cahoots with the press to protect their image, saying the secret deal was struck to avoid a member of the royal family in the witness box.

Buckingham Palace "wanted to avoid at all costs" the reputational damage caused by publication in the 1990s of details of an "intimate telephone conversation" between Charles and the now Queen Consort Camilla, when his father was still married to his mother Princess Diana, his statement said.

Queen's backing

His grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth, had in 2017 had given her backing for him to pursue his case and seek an apology from Rupert Murdoch himself, said Harry, who is currently involved in four cases against British newspapers.

But despite the queen's intervention, he said a year later the palace lawyer had told him "nothing could be done as NGN were not in a position to apologise to Her Majesty the Queen and the rest of the Royal Family at that stage".

In his submission, NGN's lawyer Anthony Hudson denied there was any "secret agreement" between the publisher and the royal family. He argued that, even if there was a deal, it did not affect their case that the lawsuit was brought too late.

Harry, who now lives in California, was not in court, but would be watching proceedings by videolink, his lawyer David Sherborne said.

In 2012, Murdoch's British newspaper group issued an unreserved apology for widespread hacking carried out by journalists at the News of the World which the media mogul had shut down amid a backlash.

But it has always rejected any unlawful activity at the Sun which was previously edited by Rebekah Brooks, now chief executive of his British arm, News UK. She has always denied knowledge of phone-hacking and was found not guilty in the 2014 trial of involvement.

Harry said in his statement he was "absolutely astonished" by this. His fury at the treatment of his wife meant he had sought to keep the press away from his glitzy wedding to Meghan in 2018, but his father's office had been unhelpful.

"They had a specific long term strategy to keep the media (including NGN) onside in order to smooth the way for my stepmother (and father) to be accepted by the British public as Queen Consort (and King respectively) when the time came," Harry wrote.

Anything that might "upset the applecart", including phone hacking claims, was to be avoided at all costs, he said.

The case is one of four Harry is pursuing against British newspapers.

BJP's Is Double Engine, Congress Is Reverse Gear Government: Amit Shah In Karnataka

Taking a jibe at the Congress, Union Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday said that while the BJP government is a "double-engine" government, Congress is a "reverse-gear" government.

He asked the people not to give the charge of the state to such a government which in itself is a "hindrance" to development.

While addressing a public rally in Devara Hippargi, Vijayapura, Amit Shah said, "On one hand there is PM Modi and Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai's 'double-engine' government and on the other hand, there's Congress' 'reverse gear' government. They (Congress) drive in reverse gear".

"Whatever development the BJP government does, Congress with its 'reverse gear' brings the situation back to square one, wherever BJP government works," he added.

He further hit out at Congress regarding the promise of restoring 4 per cent Muslim reservation in the state.

"We did a major change in reservation. They (Congress) started creating an uproar and said this is unfair. I want to ask, why should the reservation be given on the basis of religion? The Constitution doesn't allow reservation on a religious basis, but Congress just for their vote bank gave 4 per cent reservation to Muslims. Now, the BJP government has scrapped it and given it instead to Lingayat, Vokkaligas and other communities," the Home Minister said.

He added, "Congress says that if it comes to power, it will again give back the reservation to Muslims, and take it away from Lingayats, Vokkaligas, and SC/ST. But don't worry, neither will Congress come to power nor will they be able to do so."

The former BJP president said that the BJP banned the Popular Front of India (PFI) which used to carry out rampant violence in the state.

"We banned PFI, who used to carry out a spate of violence in the state. When Siddaramaiah was the Chief Minister, he released them all. But, once we came to power, we picked each one of them and put them back in jail. This 'reverse gear' government says that if they come to power, they will revoke the ban on PFI. This is a warning bell for the whole of Karnataka," Amit Shah further said.

He added, "Congress was encouraging PFI just for vote-bank politics. But, I would like to assure everyone that there is no need to worry, and this won't happen. Under PM Modi, Karnataka's security will remain as it is."

Amit Shah also appealed to the people to make the 'Lotus' bloom in the state for the welfare of the people, of Karnataka and of the country.

"On one side there is Congress, which has always been insulting Lingayats. On the other side, there is JDS, just for becoming the Chief Minister, last time they sat in Congress's lap. Voting for JD(S) means voting for Congress and voting for Congress means lifting the ban on PFI," he said.

In the 2018 Assembly elections, BJP won 104 seats and emerged as the single largest party, while the Congress and JD(S) bagged 78 and 37 seats, respectively.

The term of the 224-member Karnataka legislative assembly is set to end on May 24. Karnataka will go to polls on May 10 and the votes will be counted on May 13.

New IT Rules Don't Seem To Protect Parody, Satire: Court On Comedian's Petition

The amendments to the Information Technology Rules, prima facie, do not seem to offer protection to parody and satire, the Bombay High Court said on Monday while hearing a petition filed by stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra.

The high court bench also said Kamra's petition challenging the amendments was maintainable.

On April 6, the Union government promulgated certain amendments to the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, including a provision of a fact check unit to identify fake or false or misleading online content related to the government.

Mr Kamra, in his petition, claimed the new rules could potentially lead to his content being arbitrarily blocked or his social media accounts being suspended or deactivated, thus harming him professionally.

He has sought that the court declare the amended rules as unconstitutional and give a direction to the government to restrain from taking action against any individual under the rules.

The Union government, in an affidavit filed in court, had "reiterated that the role of the fact check unit is restricted to any business of the Central government, which may include information about policies, programmes, notifications, rules, regulations, implementation thereof, etc".

"The fact check unit may only identify fake or false or misleading information and not any opinion, satire or artistic impression. Therefore, the aim of the government with regard to the introduction of the impugned provision is explicitly clear and suffers from no purported arbitrariness or unreasonableness as alleged by the petitioner (Kamra)," the Centre's affidavit further contended.

On Monday, a division bench of Justices GS Patel and Neela Gokhale, while hearing the plea, said, prima facie, the rules don't seem to offer protection to fair criticism of the government like parody and satire.

"You are not affecting parody, satire, that is what your affidavit says. That is not what your rules say. There is no protection granted. That we will have to see," Justice Patel orally remarked.

The Centre had also said the fact check unit has not yet been notified by the government and, hence, arguments made in the petition (by Kamra) regarding its functioning do not have any basis and were "premature and under mere misconceptions of the petitioner”.

However, the bench said the argument that the challenge is “premature” is also incorrect.

The court will hear the matter further on April 27.

As per the amendments, intermediaries such as social media companies will have to act against content identified by the fact check unit or risk losing their “safe harbour” protections under Section 79 of the IT Act.

"Safe harbour" protections allow intermediaries to avoid liabilities for what third parties post on their websites.

Rishi Sunak Goes Live On LinkedIn To Push UK's Growth Plans

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Monday joined a live question and answer session with a range of UK businesses as part of a new Business Connect programme, which he says will promote his economic growth priority and optimise the conditions for businesses in the country to thrive.

Over 200 of the UK's highest-profile CEOs and business leaders, representing key growth sectors, including tech, life sciences and advanced manufacturing, gathered in London for the first Business Connect event to hear directly from Rishi Sunak.

It came as Downing Street released the latest figures to show that 1,800 jobs a month have been created since October 2022 - the month Rishi Sunak took charge in the wake of a disastrous mini-Budget which resulted in predecessor Liz Truss being deposed as Prime Minister.

"Since taking office, I've spoken to over 1,000 business people - because they are the innovators and change-makers at the heart of our economy, supporting jobs, attracting investment and driving growth," said Mr Sunak.

"Business Connect provides the next fantastic opportunity to demonstrate how we are growing the economy. We are bringing together some of the UK's biggest companies and investors for meaningful dialogue - and I'm a prime minister passionate about working with business to unlock opportunity and progress," he said.

The British-Indian leader said the UK should be proud of its business credentials and pointed to the creation of 162 tech unicorns, smarter regulation and world-leading universities as the "right ingredients" to double down on growing the economy.

Alongside, Mr Sunak also unveiled new GBP 100 million in initial start-up funding for a new task force responsible for accelerating the UK's capability in the rapidly-emerging types of artificial intelligence (AI). The Foundation Model Taskforce, modelled on the success of the COVID-19 Vaccines Taskforce, will develop the safe and reliable use of AI across the economy and ensure the UK is globally competitive in this strategic technology.

"Harnessing the potential of AI provides enormous opportunities to grow our economy, create better-paid jobs, and build a better future through advances in healthcare and security. By investing in emerging technologies through our new expert taskforce, we can continue to lead the way in developing safe and trustworthy AI as part of shaping a more innovative UK economy," added Mr Sunak.

As part of long-term plans to create a more innovative UK economy, the UK government added a new "innovation" category at the Great British Entrepreneur Awards, to be hosted by UK Chancellor Jeremy Hunt at Downing Street on Monday evening. The new award will recognise bright and innovative ideas that deliver new products and services and can drive our economy forward.

"It's absolutely vital that we're listening to - and working with - industry leaders, innovators and disruptors as we deliver on our priority to grow the economy," said Mr Hunt.

The government also referenced plans for new trade deals, including a free trade agreement (FTA) being negotiated with India, as part of this economic growth strategy.

"By securing high-quality trade deals, scrapping market access barriers around the world and cutting needless red tape that holds businesses back, I will ensure the UK remains one of the best places in the world to start and grow a business," said UK Business Secretary Kemi Badenoch.

Several British businesses have expressed their support for the government's Business Connect initiative, designed as a platform for businesses to discuss the UK's growth plans and the role of technology.

Over $68 Billion Withdrawn From Credit Suisse Before UBS Takeover

Tens of billions were withdrawn from Credit Suisse in the first three months of 2023, the bank's earnings report showed Monday, providing clues to the towering challenges ahead as UBS prepares an emergency takeover.

Switzerland's long-time second largest bank saw 61.2 billion Swiss francs ($68.6 billion) withdrawn in the first quarter alone, it said Monday in what is likely its final quarterly report before it is swallowed by its larger domestic rival, UBS.

The bank also reported deceptively bloated net profits for the quarter, after its high-risk debts were wiped out in the mega-merger deal, but warned of "substantial" losses to come.

Investors had been eagerly awaiting the results as they seek clues to the magnitude of the challenges facing UBS, Switzerland's largest bank, after it was strongarmed last month by Swiss authorities into the shotgun marriage.

The results seemed to be greeted with some optimism.

In early afternoon trading, Credit Suisse's shares rose nearly two percent to 0.81 Swiss francs a piece and UBS's were up 1.6 percent at 18.35 francs a share, as the Swiss stock exchange's main SMI index rose 0.14 percent.

'Bad shape'

But Vontobel analyst Andreas Venditti warned in a research note that Credit Suisse's report "reveals the bad shape the firm is in".

"UBS undoubtedly faces a major (and urgent) task in deeply restructuring its former competitor."

Credit Suisse said the "significant net asset outflows" were particularly heavy in the second half of March, as it was engulfed by panic in the days surrounding the hastily arranged takeover.

"These outflows have moderated but have not yet reversed as of April 24, 2023," the bank said in its earnings statement.

Analysts with the Zurich Cantonal Bank (ZKB) stressed that Credit Suisse's outflows for the quarter were "less than feared".

But they come after the bank already saw 110.5 billion francs in outflows in the fourth quarter of 2022.

Mr Venditti pointed out that over the past six months, Credit Suisse's wealth management division alone had seen 140 billion francs in net new money outflows.

The bank meanwhile said it saw its net profit swell in the first quarter to 12.4 billion francs, up from a significant loss a year earlier.

Debt wipe out

But that was largely attributed to holders of high-risk Credit Suisse debt being wiped out in the emergency takeover deal.

Swiss authorities required that close to 16 billion Swiss francs ($17.9 billion) in so-called additional tier 1 (AT1) bonds be rendered worthless before Switzerland's two biggest banks united.

The order by the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) infuriated bondholders, and a number of them have begun launching legal action against the regulator.

Credit Suisse said its quarterly results were also boosted by the 700-million-Swiss-franc sale of a significant part of its Securitized Products Group to Apollo Global Management.

But despite this, on an adjusted basis, the bank said it nonetheless suffered a pre-tax loss for the quarter of 1.3 billion Swiss francs.

The bank, which last October launched a vast restructuring plan including carving out its investment arm, said that unit had suffered an adjusted pre-tax loss of 337 million in the first quarter.

'Substantial' losses

And it warned that "in light of the merger announcement, the adverse revenue impact from the previously disclosed exit from non-core businesses and exposures, restructuring charges and funding costs", it expected to see a "substantial" pre-tax losses in its investment bank unit and overall in the second quarter and full year of 2023.

Credit Suisse also said Monday that it had scrapped a deal to acquire the investment advisory business of M. Klein & Company and fold it into the First Boston brand, which it had planned to resurrect as part of its investment bank overhaul.

The bank said the sides had "mutually agreed to terminate" the $175-million acquisition "considering Credit Suisse's recently announced merger with UBS."

Credit Suisse suffered a string of scandals over the past several years, and after the collapse of three US regional banks unleashed market panic, it was left looking like the weakest link in the chain.

Over the course of a nerve-wracking weekend, Swiss authorities organised an emergency rescue, pressuring UBS to agree to a $3.25-billion mega merger on the evening of March 19.

Justifying the move to parliament earlier this month, Swiss President Alain Berset said that "without intervention, Credit Suisse would have found itself, in all likelihood, in default on March 20 or 21".

In 2022, Credit Suisse suffered a 7.3-billion-franc loss, in stark contrast to the $7.6 billion profit raked in by UBS last year.

UBS is due to publish its first quarter results on Tuesday.

Ex-Zilingo CEO Ankiti Bose Hiked Her Salary 10X Without Approval, Made "Unexplained Payments": Report

Ankiti Bose, co-founder of Singapore fashion start-up Zilingo who was sacked as CEO in May last year following complaints of serious financial irregularities, increased her salary 10 times without board approval and made $10 million worth of "unexplained payments" to various vendors, a new report has said. 

The report by Inc42 comes a day after Ms Bose filed a $100 million defamation suit against prominent angel investor and co-founder of Seedfund Mahesh Murthy for his article in the March 1 issue of Outlook Business magazine, in which he referred to founders who took money illegally out of their start-ups. In his article, Mr Murthy mentioned "one lady" who "ran a popular fashion portal and took Sequoia's money". 

Without taking Ms Bose's name, Mr Murthy wrote, "She got her firm to pay her lawyer some Rs 70 crore as fees and-it is rumoured-got a lot of that amount directly back to herself as her cut". 

On Saturday, in response to the defamation case, Mr Murthy tweeted, "Guilty conscience? Playing the victim? A PR stunt to stay in the news? A new way to raise funding? If you have a guess, do share it :)"

Now, in its report, Inc42 has unearthed more details about the company's messy financial reporting as well as alarming information about the $10 million in unexplained payments and more. 

It found that Ms Bose had submitted "conflicting revenue figures" to shareholders and increased her salary 10 times without board approval. Of this, $9 million was paid to Sandeep Kapoor's law firm Algo Legal and related entities as legal fees and allegedly for "IT system development", but none of these services were actually rendered, the outlet found. Separately, $944,000 was also paid to Ebix cash, which Ms Bose approved "even without an existing contract," as per the report.

The outlet stated that "despite those unexplained payments to vendors, Zilingo's books had plenty of other anomalies and some creative accounting measures approved/undertaken by Ms Bose to boost the revenue reported in FY21 and FY22". It also added that some of these measures were taken mere days before her suspension last year.

In response to the article, Ms Bose's representative has said that there was no 10X growth in CEO's salary. "In fact, Ms. Bose was on a 30% pay cut as earlier clarified and proper documentation exists with the company for this," the spokesperson added.

Mayawati's Party "Sympathetic" Towards Atiq Ahmad's Wife, Says Leader

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Uma Shankar Singh on Sunday said Shaista Parveen, the wife of gangster-politician Atiq Ahmad, is still in the party and has not been expelled from it.

Speaking to reporters here, Singh -- the lone BSP MLA in the 403-member UP Legislative Assembly -- said, "Shaista Parveen, wife of Atiq Ahmad, is still in the party. She has not been expelled from the party. She is not occupying any post in the party. If she is convicted, she will be expelled from the party. She is yet to be convicted. The party is sympathetic towards her."

To a question that the BSP has been termed as BJP's “B-Team” by Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, he said, "Akhilesh Yadav does not have any issue except defaming the BSP.” On April 10, BSP chief Mayawati had said her party will not field gangster Ahmad's wife Parveen or any other member of his family in the mayoral election in Prayagraj.

Parveen had joined the BSP in the presence of its senior leaders on January 5, and was reportedly being considered as the party's mayoral candidate for Prayagraj.

The urban local body elections will be held in the state on May 4 and 11.

“As far as Shaista Parveen is concerned, I would like to make it clear that as per the facts emerging from media reports regarding the Umesh Pal murder case, as soon as the name of Atiq's wife emerged and after she has gone underground, the situation has changed," Mayawati had told reporters.

“In this scenario, our party will now not give the mayoral ticket to Atiq's wife, nor to any member of his family," she had said.

The BSP chief had also said, "As far as the question of keeping Atiq's wife in the party is concerned, a decision will be taken soon from the facts that emerge after she lands in the police net." On March 13, BSP leader Uma Shankar Singh, who is also the Leader of the party in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, had come out in support of Parveen, saying the police's cash reward for information on her is an attempt “to divert attention” from its failure in solving the Umesh Pal murder case.

The Rasra MLA had said, "Shaista Parveen has no relation, even remotely, with the murder case. Even the police have not been able to prove it. She is a social person." “Shaista Parveen is all set to become the mayor of Prayagraj and the BJP is going to lose the seat. This is the (reason) behind the BJP's fury," Singh had said, and stressed that BSP chief Mayawati has already announced that action will be taken against Parveen if the allegations against her are proven.

"We still stand by that. If the allegation is proven, Shaista Parveen will be expelled from the party. The BSP never compromises on matters of crime," Singh had said.

Umesh Pal and his two police security guards were shot dead on February 24 outside his home in Prayagraj's Dhoomanganj area.

Based on a complaint lodged by Umesh Pal's wife Jaya Pal, a case was registered on February 25 against Atiq Ahmad, his brother Ashraf, wife Parveen, two sons, aides Guddu Muslim and Ghulam, and nine others.

On March 28, an MP/MLA court held Atiq Ahmad and two others guilty in the 2006 Umesh Pal kidnapping case and sentenced them to life imprisonment. That was Ahmad's first conviction even though more than 100 cases had been registered against him.

The 60-year-old former Samajwadi Party MP was brought from Sabarmati Jail in Gujarat by road for hearing in the case in Prayagraj.

On April 15, Atiq Ahmad (60) and his brother Ashraf were shot dead at point-blank range by three men posing as journalists in the middle of a media interaction on Saturday night while police personnel were escorting them to a medical college here for a checkup.

J&K Attack: Terrorists Used Steel Core Bullets To Pierce Armoured Shield

The terrorists who ambushed an Army truck in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch used steel core bullets, capable of piercing an armoured shield, and decamped with the soldiers' weapons, officials said on Sunday, amid intensified efforts to trace and neutralise the perpetrators.

They said a sniper is believed to have targeted the truck from the front before the other terrorists sprayed bullets and lobbed grenades on it.

Five soldiers were killed and one injured after the terrorists attacked the lone Army truck, which was carrying eatables for iftar to a nearby village, in the dense forest area of Bhata Dhurian late on Thursday afternoon and the vehicle caught fire.

The soldiers were from a Rashtriya Rifles unit deployed for counter-terror operations.

Experts from various agencies, including the National Security Guard (NSG) and the National Investigation Agency (NIA), have visited the site of the attack over the past two days and have managed to get a clear picture of the deadly ambush which was laid by the terrorists, the officials said.

They said a sniper is believed to have targeted the vehicle from the front before his associates showered bullets and lobbed grenades on the vehicle from opposite sides, apparently giving the troops no time to retaliate.

The terrorists used steel core bullets that can penetrate an armoured shield, they said.

Before fleeing, the terrorists stole the soldiers' arms and ammunition, they added.

Though the area where the attack took place is considered terrorism-free for long, the Bhata Dhurian forest area remains a notorious infiltration route for terrorists attempting to sneak into India by crossing the Line of Control (LoC) due to its topography, dense forest cover, and natural caves.

In October 2021, nine soldiers were killed in two major gunfights with terrorists within four days in the forest area during a search operation that continued for over three weeks.

Thursday's ambush was also a grim reminder of a terrorist attack on the official vehicle of a judicial magistrate over two decades ago. District and Sessions Judge V K Phool, a civilian and two police personnel were killed in the attack which took place on December 5, 2001, in the Dehra Ki Gali forests near the Bhata Dhurian forests.

The officials said over 12 people have been detained for questioning in connection with the Poonch attack but no arrests have been made so far.

Security forces are using drones and sniffer dogs to conduct a recce of the dense forest but success has eluded them so far, they said.

It is believed that the terrorists have managed to create safe hideouts in the dense forest to escape the security dragnet or may have crossed over to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, they added.

According to the officials, initial reports suggest the involvement of around five terrorists, including some foreign mercenaries, in the attack.

After the ambush, the terrorists possibly used grenades as well as sticky bombs that caused the vehicle to erupt into flames.

The officials said those who executed the attack are believed to have been in Rajouri and Poonch for more than a year and had adequate knowledge of the terrain, which is quite tough.

The area is a hotbed of Jammu and Kashmir Gaznavi Force (JKGF) as its 'commander' Rafiq Ahmed alias Rafiq Nayi is a resident of the area, they added.

At present, three to four terrorist groups are active in the region of Rajouri and Poonch, sources said.

Foreign Trade Can Be Done In Indian Currency Soon: Minister

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Saturday expressed hope that traders will soon be able to settle foreign trade in the rupee currency as several banks from different countries are opening special Vostro accounts with Indian banks.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved 60 requests to open Special Rupee Vostro Accounts (SRVAs) of correspondent banks from 18 countries, including the UK, Singapore, and New Zealand.

The central bank, he said, is in discussion with its counterparts in different nations on this.

"We will soon start seeing operationalisation of this rupee trading in international trade with several countries," Piyush Goyal told reporters here.

He also said that negotiations for free trade agreements (FTAs) with developed regions like the European Union, the UK, and Canada are in "advanced" stages.

Groups including European Free Trade Association Free Trade Agreement (EFTA), Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) are also keen to start talks for similar pacts with India.

"The whole world wants to have a comprehensive economic partnership agreement with India," the minister said.

On the second phase of the production-linked incentive scheme for the textiles sector, he said that extensive stakeholder discussions have happened on the subject.

"I am quite confident that very soon we will be able to finalise the contours of the scheme and take it up for approval at the highest level," he added.

Old Mortar Shell Found In Delhi By Civic Body Staff

An old mortar shell was recovered from a drain in Kapashera village here by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) staff today, police said.

Information regarding the recovery of a suspected explosive device was received at around 12.30 pm from the MCD staff, who were cleaning the drainage in the village near FIMT college, a senior police officer said.

The area was cordoned off and the site was covered with sandbags.

A bomb disposal squad of the National Security Guard (NSG) was called on the spot, the officer said, adding the mortar shell appears to be an old one.

North Korea Accuses G7 Of Interference By Calling For Denuclearisation

North Korea's position as a nuclear weapons state will remain undeniable and it will "continue necessary action" until military threats from the United States and its allies are eliminated, state media KCNA said on Friday.

North Korea's foreign minister Choe Son Hui issued a statement criticising the United States and other Group of Seven countries. The G7 foreign ministers condemned the North's April 13 test of an intercontinental ballistic missile and urged denuclearisation at the end of their meeting in Japan on Tuesday.

Choe accused the G7 countries of illegally interfering in North Korea's internal affairs by demanding denuclearisation, saying Pyongyang will take strong action if they attempt to violate its sovereignty and fundamental interests, KCNA said.

2 AAP Corporators Join BJP In Gujarat, 1 Removed For Anti-Party Activities

Two corporators of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Gujarat's Surat city on Friday and one of them was removed from the former's primary membership for anti-party activities.

With the latest development, the AAP's strength in the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has come down to 15. The party won 27 seats in the 2021 urban body polls and 12 corporators have now joined the BJP.

Corporators Kanu Gedia and Alpesh Patel joined the BJP at a function, where they were welcomed into the fold with saffron scarfs and caps, less than a week after six AAP corporators had embraced saffron fold.

The AAP in a statement announced the removal of Gedia and corporator Rajesh Moradiya from all party posts and its primary membership.

It alleged that the two corporators were removed for anti-party activities because they were instigating others to join the BJP by promising them money.

AAP leader Gopal Italia also claimed that the two corporators (Gedia and Patel) moved to the BJP after they were offered money.

The BJP, however, rubbished the claim and said Gedia and Patel had joined of their own accord and were not pressurised or offered allurement.

They are attracted by the party's leadership in Gujarat and India, and are influenced by the BJP's ideology of development. They have joined to make the party strong in Surat and Gujarat, a BJP leader said.

The AAP emerged as the opposition party after winning 27 seats in the 120-member Surat Municipal Corporation elections held in February 2021. The BJP won 93 seats, while the Congress failed to open an account.

The 2021 civic poll result was then seen as a boost for the Arvind Kejriwal-led party eyeing the December 2022 Assembly election. While it contested on all 182 seats, the party managed to win only five seats, and none in Surat.

Mansion That Featured In James Bond Movies Goes On Sale For $93.5 Million

In one of the largest ever country property deals in the UK, business mogul Mike Jatania is looking to sell a 13-bedroom, Grade-I listed mansion just west of London.

The James Bond movies Live and Let Die and The Man with the Golden Gun both included scenes from this majestic house.

According to The Guardian, the name of the property is Denham Place, which is set in 17 hectares (43 acres) of Buckinghamshire parkland designed by the 18th-century landscape architect Lancelot "Capability" Brown.

The sale of this property will take place next week through Knight Frank, Savills, and Beauchamp Estates for the price of 75 million pounds ($93.5 million).

The owner of the mansion is multimillionaire cosmetics tycoon Mike Jatania.

The real estate company Rightmove describes the property on its website as "a mansion built in 1688-1701," which is an exceptional residence that has been fully restored, and short of acquiring one of the Crown Estate Royal Palaces, there is nothing of this grandeur or provenance so close to Central London.

The restoration was led by acclaimed designer and award-winning architect Alexander Kravetz, who worked alongside English Heritage and The Georgian Group for historic accuracy.

The grand 28,525 sq. ft. manor house, built in classic William and Mary architectural style, provides a private palace with state room-style principal entertaining spaces. The estate has a Grade II-listed coach house, estate cottages, ancillary buildings, and substantial garaging for vehicles (all totaling 11,199 sq. ft.).

Notable former residents of this home have included the Bonaparte Imperial family, American banker JP Morgan, politician and movie financier Lord Robert Vansittart, and James Bond film franchise co-producer Harry Saltzman.

"PM Known For Beating Anti-Incumbency": BJP MLA To NDTV On Karnataka Polls

Arvind Bellad, the Karnataka BJP MLA from Hubballi-Dharwad West, has told NDTV that the exit of former Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar from the BJP just weeks before the assembly election will not affect the party's performance in the polls, especially the support of Lingayat voters.

Mr Bellad also denied the BJP will face any anti-incumbency issues, especially with the campaign support that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has provided.

"He (PM Modi) is known for beating anti-incumbency. He creates a pro-incumbency wave and he is going to do that in Karnataka also," Mr Bellad told NDTV.

Mr Shettar, a six-time MLA from Hubballi-Dharwad Central seat and an influential Lingayat leader, joined the Congress after the BJP denied him a ticket. His joining the Congress has led to speculation that Lingayat votes in the Hubballi-Dharwad region may go with him to his new party.

Mr Bellad, however, dismissed such speculation, saying the BJP is not worried.

"Lingayats are always with the BJP and they will always remain with the BJP," Mr Bellad told NDTV, adding the talk about "sympathy factor" for Mr Shettar will not translate into electoral support.

The politically influential Lingayats comprises 17 per cent of Karnataka's population, mostly in the northern parts of the state, which the BJP counts as its strong vote base. After Mr Shettar left the BJP in anger, the Congress has been accusing the BJP of being an "anti-Lingayat" party.

"There is no sympathy factor. In fact, people and party workers are angry at him for going away. Somebody who has enjoyed a lot of support of party workers and power has moved away to Congress," the BJP leader said.

On whether there is less of a regional pull in the BJP's campaign and if mostly relying on PM Modi's support can work in the state election, Mr Bellad agreed PM Modi is a strong force even in the Karnataka election.

"We have such a great Prime Minister who has captured the hearts and minds of people. Why not rely on him? He has a huge sway in this election also," Mr Bellad said.

Voting in Karnataka is on May 10 and votes will be counted three days later.

Police Case Against Bollywood Actor For Threatening Woman At Mumbai Gym

The Mumbai Police has registered an FIR against Bollywood actor Sahil Khan and a woman for allegedly threatening a 43-year-old gym-goer and uploading her defamatory posts on social media, an official said on Wednesday.

According to the complainant, a resident of suburban Oshiwara, she had a quarrel with a woman at a gym over money in February 2023. The accused woman and Sahil Khan abused the complainant and threatened her, the official said.

The accused duo also uploaded defamatory posts on social media against the complainant and her family members, he said quoting the First Information Report (FIR) registered on Tuesday.

A case was registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for defamation, threat, and a bid to insult the modesty of a woman at Oshiwara police station.

The official said the accused woman had an affair with the husband of the complainant and had lodged a case against him at a police station.

Mr Khan has acted in movies including Style, Xcuse Me, Aladin and Ramaa: The Saviour.

Tamil Nadu Bus Conductor Mistreats Differently Abled Cricketer, Suspended

A conductor with the Tamil Nadu State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) who treated a differently abled cricketer with disdain and disallowed him from boarding the bus was suspended, the transport corporation said on Wednesday.

The cricketer, Sachin Shiva, attempted to board the SETC bus to Madurai from Koyambedu here when the conductor abruptly stopped him saying the bus with toilet facilities was not meant for travel pass holders. An argument ensued between the two when Shiva clarified that he could travel in the bus with the government pass provided to him.

A video of the conductor's rude behaviour went viral in the social media and in it he was heard saying "I will smash your face." Shiva identifies himself as cricket captain and questions the conductor for hurling abuse at him, in the same video. As the squabble intensifies, a police man could be seen trying to pacify the two. At one juncture Shiva asks the conductor if he is the owner to decide who should travel.

Later, Shiva posted a video claiming that he faced difficulties in travelling to Madurai in a bus lacking toilet facilities. Upon reaching his hometown, the cricketer lodged a complaint with the SETC officials at Mattuthavani. The disheartened captain of the Indian disabled cricket team told reporters that the conductor's blatant refusal had forced him to travel in another bus.

"The government has given us concessions to travel in all buses except AC buses but it is not known why certain bus crew and officials disallow us. The government pays a major portion of the fare to the transport corporation in advance," he said and insisted that the bus crew should honor the concessions provided by the government to the disabled.

A release from the managing director of SETC said the conductor was suspended for "behaving disrespectfully" with a differently abled person on the night of April 18. "A disciplinary action has been initiated on the conductor," the release said.

UK Pharmacy Manager Creates A "Wall Of Shame" To Deter Shoplifting Thieves

A pharmacy manager who became frustrated by a shoplifting incident in the store had an innovative idea to humiliate the shoplifter that has caught the attention of Birmingham residents as well as social media users all over the world.

Following a spike in crime at his store, Whasuf Farooq, manager of Pak Pharmacy in Saltley, Birmingham, publicly humiliated more than 16 individuals by creating a "wall of shame" featuring images of alleged shoplifters.

According to The Metro, not knowing their real names, Mr. Farooq gave them nicknames as to what they allegedly stole, including 'The Lynx Thief' and 'Nivea Man'. But he insists that his method is so effective that the thieves are returning to pay for what they owe.

After claiming that despite having CCTV proof, the police did not look into the theft, Mr. Farooq came up with his plan.

"Shoplifting has been a big problem here, but the police don't do anything to help us. We've had 15 or 16 people on the wall in the past year. If they come and pay, we take it down. It's as simple as that; there's no problem. It's decreased a lot; everyone thinks twice now. It's like a deterrent; people walk up to the door and turn around. People don't want to be featured," he said.

"Naming and shaming works; people see them and tell us where they live or who they are. I do plan to keep it going," Mr Farooq said.
