Congress Wins Big In Shimla Civic Polls, Hopes For Same In Karnataka

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi congratulated the party workers on Thursday for a big victory in the Shimla Municipal Corporation polls, saying people have reposed their faith in the party due to the fulfilment of the guarantees given by the Himachal Pradesh government and hoping that Karnataka will do the same.

"Many congratulations to all our lion-hearted workers, leaders and members of the state for the big victory of the Congress in the Shimla Municipal Corporation polls," the former party chief said in a tweet in Hindi.

"The Himachal Pradesh government has fulfilled the promises given to the people and that is why Shimla has reposed its faith in the Congress. Now, it is the turn of the five guarantees in Karnataka," he added.

The Congress also tweeted, saying the party has registered a landslide victory in the Shimla Municipal Corporation (SMC) elections.

"Congratulations to all the newly-elected members. Service of the people -- the resolution of the Congress," it said.

Party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said, "The historic victory of the Congress in the Shimla Municipal Corporation elections is the victory of the party's policies and its dedication to people. We thank the people of Shimla for this trust."

"My best wishes to all the hard working Congress workers. In Karnataka too, the Congress has given guarantees of progress. We appeal to the people of Karnataka to form a Congress government with a big majority," she said in a tweet in Hindi.

Another Congress general secretary, Randeep Singh Surjewala, said, "The Congress government implemented guarantees in Himachal. Result: Congress wrests Shimla Municipal Corporation...."

"The Congress will implement its 5 guarantees in Karnataka too. Change is here. Congress is here," he tweeted.

The Karnataka Assembly polls are scheduled to be held on May 10.

The ruling Congress in Himachal Pradesh swept the SMC polls on Thursday with a two-thirds majority, by winning 24 of the 34 wards, wresting the prestigious civic body from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The BJP captured nine wards, while the CPI(M) managed to win one, Shimla Deputy Commissioner Aditya Negi said.

Both the BJP and Congress had fielded 34 candidates each and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) had put up four.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which had fielded 21 candidates, failed to get results in the polls held on Tuesday. All the nine independents were also defeated. A total of 102 contestants were in the fray.

The Congress had won the Assembly polls in the hill state in December 2022, winning 40 of the 68 seats.

Manipur Crisis: Amit Shah Speaks To Chief Ministers Of Neighbouring States

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday spoke to the chief ministers of the neighbouring states of Manipur and held two meetings with top central and state functionaries through video conference to review the situation there following violence between tribals and the majority Meitei community, sources said.

The home minister, who is closely monitoring the situation in Manipur, held telephonic conversation with Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio of Nagaland, Zoramthanga of Mizoram and Himanta Biswa Sarma of Assam, the sources said.

In the morning, Amit Shah had a telephonic conversation with Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh who briefed him about the prevailing situation in the state and steps being taken to restore normalcy.

The home minister also had two video conference meetings to review the situation. They were attended by the Manipur chief minister, the state's chief secretary, police chief, the union home secretary and other top central government officials, the sources said.

Following the directives of the Union Home Ministry, 12 companies of the paramilitary forces including from the CRPF and BSF were deployed in Manipur on Wednesday, while 14 more were sent on Thursday. Another 8-10 companies are likely to be sent on Friday.

Assam Rifles troops have also been deployed in the violence-hit areas of Manipur since Wednesday.

Clashes broke out in the state on Wednesday and they intensified overnight with counter-attacks being mounted by rival communities in retaliation to earlier attacks, after Naga and Kuki tribals organised a 'Tribal Solidarity March' to protest moves to give scheduled tribe status to the majority Metei community.

The state government on Thursday issued a 'shoot at sight' order in "extreme cases" to contain spiralling violence in the state between tribals and the majority Meitei community which has displaced over 9,000 people from their villages.

US Becomes 1st Country To Approve Respiratory Syncytial Virus Vaccine

The United States on Wednesday approved the world's first vaccine for the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), the culmination of a decades-long hunt to protect vulnerable people from the common illness.

Drugmaker GSK's Arexvy was green-lighted for adults aged 60 and older, with similar shots from other makers including Pfizer and Moderna expected to follow soon.

"Today's approval of the first RSV vaccine is an important public health achievement to prevent a disease which can be life-threatening," said senior US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) official Peter Marks in a statement.

The decision "marks a turning point in our effort to reduce the significant burden of RSV," added Tony Wood, GSK's chief scientific officer.

RSV is a common virus that normally causes mild, cold-like symptoms, but can be serious for infants and the elderly, as well as those with weak immune systems and underlying conditions.

In severe cases it can cause pneumonia and bronchiolitis, an inflammation of the small airways deep inside the lungs.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, RSV leads to approximately 60,000 to 120,000 hospitalizations and 6,000 to 10,000 deaths among adults 65 years of age and older.

Awareness of the disease has increased in recent years, in part because of the strain it has placed on hospital systems over the last two winters.

Rates of RSV and flu fell during Covid-19 lockdowns, but surged when restrictions were lifted, with young children hit hard.

Pharmaceutical companies have been chasing an RSV vaccine for years. Given recent successful breakthroughs in the sector, analysts predict the market could be worth over $10 billion in the next decade, according to reports.

- More vaccines on way -

GSK's vaccine contains a "subunit" or part of the virus to help train the immune system should it encounter the real thing.

It was approved based on a study of 25,000 people aged 60 and older that showed a single dose was 83 percent effective against disease caused by RSV, and more than 94 percent effective against severe disease.

Researchers will continue to follow volunteers in the study to assess the duration of protection as well as the safety and efficacy of more doses.

The most common side effects included injection site pain, fatigue, muscle pain, headaches and joint stiffness.

An irregular heartbeat was a less common side effect, occurring in 10 participants who received Arexvy and four participants who received placebo.

Safety issues were also found in two other studies of the drug involving approximately 2,500 people aged 60 and up. In one of these studies, two volunteers developed a rare type of inflammation that affects the brain and spinal cord, and one of them died.

In the other study, one participant developed Guillain-Barre syndrome, in which the immune system damages nerve cells, causing muscle weakness and sometimes paralysis.

GSK's Arexvy was recommended for approval last week by the European Union's drug watchdog, the European Medicines Agency, whose positive opinions are normally formally followed by approval from the European Commission.

Pfizer has said that it expects a decision from the FDA in May for its own RSV vaccine, also for those over 60 years old.

In January, Moderna said it hopes its RSV vaccine will be approved and available in time for the Northern Hemisphere's winter later this year.

Several other companies are also developing RSV vaccines.

Last year, the EU approved a preventative antibody treatment against RSV, developed by British-Swedish pharmaceutical firm AstraZeneca and France's Sanofi, which confers temporary protection.

Sikh Restaurant Owner Threatened Over Anti-Khalistan Video In London: Report

A Sikh restaurant owner in London, Harman Singh Kapoor and his family have claimed that they have been receiving constant online threats after they posted a video about the Khalistan movement on social media, Khalsa Vox reported.

This comes despite repeated assurances by police of safety and special safeguarding measures. The family has experienced three attacks, and they do not feel safe, according to Khalsa Vox, a portal on news related to Punjab politics, history, culture, and heritage.

Harman's restaurant was attacked by pro-Khalistan supporters, an incident that occurred after the Indian High Commission in London was vandalised last month.

Harman then posted a video which garnered two million views in two days, leading to abusive calls, social media trolling, and threats against him and his family.

He claimed that the threats began after he posted a video on TikTok, in which he said, "This Khalistan movement started a while back and then it died down. Today again, a section of people who are settled in Canada, in England and Australia want Khalistan but those in India don't want it."

Harman said that following the video, he received death threats and his restaurant was attacked. The attackers demanded that he remove the video, raise pro-Khalistan slogans, and burn the Indian flag, or face death.

Harman said his wife and his daughter even received several rape threats. "Our address was put online with calls to rape and kill them. Videos of miscreants licking the pictures of my wife and daughter were posted as well," he added, according to Bitter Winter.

An independent report commissioned by former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has expressed concerns over the rising influence of pro-Khalistan extremists within the British Sikh community, Khalsa Vox reported.

The Bloom Review, an independent report commissioned by former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, has called on the Rishi Sunak government to address the issue urgently and safeguard most of the Sikhs in the UK who do not support the extremist ideology.

The report stressed on the timeliness of addressing the issue. The report noted that the Sikh communities in the UK face coercion and intimidation by fringe Khalistani elements, Khalsa Vox reported. These pro-Khalistan groups artificially inflate their influence and attract disproportionate attention by lobbying political bodies under the guise of human rights activism.

As per the news report, the actions of pro-Khalistan groups create a false image of legitimacy which is not according to the beliefs of the Sikh faith. It is important to understand that Khalistani separatists do not represent the views of most of British Sikh communities, as per the Khalsa Vox report.
