"To Infuse Transparency": Centre Wants Seat In Judges' Appointments Body

Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju has written to the Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, that the Supreme Court collegium that decides on judges' appointments should include government representatives. This will "infuse transparency and public accountability", the Law Minister says in a letter that vastly escalates a dispute between the government and the judiciary since last year.

The letter is "just the precise follow-up action" suggested by the Supreme Court while striking down the National Judicial Appointment Commission (NJAC), Mr Rijiju said today, responding to criticism by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, among others.

Arvind Kejriwal, the chief of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), called the government's letter "dangerous" in a tweet. "This is extremely dangerous. There should be absolutely no government interference in judicial appointments," he tweeted.

Mr Rijiju retorted: "I hope you honour the court's direction!"

In the war of words over judges' appointments, several ministers - current and former - and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar have criticised what they call "opaqueness" of the judiciary. They argue that the government should have a role in selection of judges, which has been the domain of the Supreme Court Collegium since 1993.

The Supreme Court has firmly defended the collegium system. Opposition parties like the Congress, Trinamool and AAP have backed the top court.

In various statements, Mr Rijiju has called the collegium system "alien" to the constitution and has strongly objected to any system in which the government has no right to appoint judges.

He has also criticised the Supreme Court for scrapping the National Judicial Appointments Commission set up by the BJP-led government through a law enacted in 2014. The commission would have comprised members of the government and the judiciary.

Vice President Dhankhar has echoed these views on multiple platforms. Last week, he criticised "one-upmanship and public posturing" from judicial platforms and said the scrapping of the judicial commission "was a scenario perhaps unparalleled in the democratic history of the world."

He also questioned a landmark 1973 Supreme Court verdict that said parliament can amend the Constitution but not its basic structure.

The Supreme Court has said the collegium system is the "law of the land" which should be "followed to the teeth". It would not cease to be the law "just because some sections of society expressed a view against the collegium system".

The Supreme Court collegium currently comprises Chief Justice Chandrachud and Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, KM Joseph, MR Shah, Ajay Rastogi and Sanjiv Khanna.

Mr Rijiju's letter also pitches for state government representatives in the High Court collegium.

Tripura Minister's "Rinse Mouth With Cow Urine" Remark Sparks Row

A Tripura Minister's "rinse mouths with cow urine" before talking about democracy remark has invited howls of protest from the Opposition.

State Law Minister Ratan Lal Nath made the distasteful remarks on Sunday while critising on the two Opposition parties, CPI(M) and Congress, on their proposed seat adjustment for the upcoming state polls.

"The opposition parties should rinse their mouths with cow urine before talking about democracy. What they had done during their past rule in Tripura apart from violence and unrest," the BJP Minister told reporters.

The Minister was referring to Congress general secretary Dr Ajay Kumar's recent statement that all anti-BJP parties need to come under one platform to "revive democracy and the Constitution".

The Left and Congress leaders had earlier alleged that "democracy was under threat" in Tripura under the BJP-led government.

CPM general Secretary Jitendra Chaudhary sharply criticised Mr Nath's cow urine jibe and said it was natural for those who regularly "drink gaumutra (cow urine) to be irritated by the mention of gantantra (democracy)".

The BJP minister had also alleged that the opposition parties ran a government backed by goons during their rule in Tripura.

"What answer will they give to Parimal Sen, Nitai Debnath, Bishu Saha, Sadhan Debnath, Runu Biswas, Parimal Saha, Madhusudhan Saha, Debal Deb, Mantu Das and others. Innumerable, thousands and thousands," said Mr Nath, reeling off names of Congress supporters allegedly killed by CPM-backed goons during the Left Front rule.

Mr Nath was a Congress leader for 34 years before his switcheroo to the BJP in 2017.

Archaeologists Unveil 3,500-Year-Old Royal Tomb In Egypt

Authorities in Egypt have discovered a 3,500-year-old tomb in Luxor that is thought to contain the bones of an 18th dynasty king. According to Mostafa Waziri, Director of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities, the tomb was discovered by Egyptian and British archaeologists on the west bank of the River Nile.

The identity of the figure buried in the tomb is still unknown. "The first elements discovered so far inside the tomb seem to indicate that it dates back to the 18th dynasty of pharaohs Akhenaton and Tutankhamun," Mostafa Waziri said in a statement to news agency AFP.

As per the press release, the cemetery is in "poor condition." This is a result of floods during ancient times which submerged dense forms of sand and limestone and led to the blurring of many landmarks and patterns, archaeologist Mohsen Kamel stated.

"The mission is continuing with the excavation work and the archaeological documentation of the cemetery entirely, which will contribute to unravel the curtain from the architectural planning of the cemetery more clearly," said Dr. Fathi Yassin, Director General of Archeology of Egypt, as per the press release.

The 18th dynasty, which was a part of the New Kingdom period of Egyptian history, came to an end in 1292 BC and is regarded as one of the most successful periods of prehistoric Egypt. The tomb may belong to a princess or royal wife of Thutmosid ancestry, according to the chairman of the British research mission Piers Litherland of the University of Cambridge.

In April 2022, the Egyptian authorities had unearthed the remains of a Zeus-inspired temple in the Sinai Peninsula. The crew identified the Zeus Kasios temple with the help of the remnants of granite pillars that previously served as the temple's entrance gate, Mostafa Waziri, secretary general of Egypt's antiquities council, was quoted as saying by Newsweek.

In recent years, Egypt unveiled several major archaeological discoveries which has also helped the country revive its vital tourism industry.
