Railways To Roll Out Hydrogen-Powered Trains For Heritage Routes: Minister

The railways will roll out hydrogen-powered trains on its narrow gauge heritage routes by December, making them "completely green".

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said Tuesday the trains will be on the lines of those running in China and Germany.

As a pilot project, the railways is manufacturing a prototype of hydrogen fuel-based train at the Northern Railway workshop. It would be test-run on the Sonipat-Jind section in Haryana.

"We will roll out the hydrogen trains on the heritage routes from December 2023. This will mean that these heritage routes will go completely green," said Vaishnaw.

Worldwide, there is a bid to replace diesel-powered locomotives with hydrogen-propelled engines wherever full electrification is difficult or too expensive as it offers an emission-free, quiet alternative that can be economically competitive.

Germany's Coradia iLint is the world's first passenger train powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, which produces electrical power for traction. This zero-emission train emits low levels of noise, with exhaust being only steam and condensed water. This train can run 1000 km at a speed of 140kmph at one go. This train was being tested in Germany since 2018.

China too recently launched Asia's first hydrogen-powered trains for the Urban Railways. It gets a range of 600 km on a single tank, with a top speed of 160 kmph, according to reports.

Indian Railways' heritage routes, which primarily run on diesel are -- Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, Nilgiri Mountain Railway, Kalka Shimla Railway, Matheran Hill Railway, Kangra Valley, Bilmora Waghai and Marwar-Devgarh Madriya. All are narrow gauge.

"Jungle Raj" Has Returned In Bihar: BJP Chief JP Nadda

BJP president JP Nadda today alleged that "Jungle Raj" has returned to Bihar, alluding to the formation of the 'Mahagathbandhan' (Grand Alliance) government in the state around five months ago.

Addressing party workers in Muzaffarpur district's Paru, which falls under Vaishali Lok Sabha constituency, Mr Nadda claimed there has been a complete breakdown in law and order in the state after the Nitish Kumar-led JD(U) formed the government with Congress and RJD.

"Since the formation of the 'Mahagathbandhan' government in Bihar, not a day goes without hearing about murders, loot, kidnapping, rape and other crimes. 'Jungle Raj' has returned to the state. There is a complete breakdown in law and order in the state," he said.

"Nitish Kumar betrayed the people of Bihar. His decision to form an alliance with the RJD and other parties is against the mandate of the people. The people of the state will give a befitting reply to Kumar in the coming polls. The 'Mahagathbandhan' government will be thrown out by voters in the next election," the BJP president added.

Nitish Kumar had formed the government with the Opposition parties after ending its coalition with BJP in August last year.

JP Nadda was earlier in the day welcomed by BJP workers at Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport in Patna.

He is expected to chair a meeting with state BJP leaders in the evening before leaving for Delhi.

Car Hits 3 Students On New Year's Eve In Greater Noida; One Critical

A car hit three engineering students, leaving one girl student seriously injured in Uttar Pradesh's Greater Noida on New Year's eve, police said on Tuesday.

The incident pertains to December 31, 2022, car-borne youths hit three engineering students from the rear, near the Alpha 2 bus stand.

The girl with serious injuries is undergoing treatment in the hospital, while the other two students have been discharged, police said.

"On December 31, 2022, at 9 pm, three students were heading towards Delta from the Alpha 2 bus stand. Meanwhile, an 'unidentified' vehicle hit them from behind. The passersby immediately rushed the injured to the Hospital. Two students, with normal injuries, have been discharged, while a girl student was gravely injured, her treatment is going on at Kailash Hospital. The victims' family members reached the hospital and met with police personnel," Greater Noida Additional Deputy Commissioners of Police, Dinesh Kumar said.

"The hospital administration has assured full cooperation," he added.

The police have started a search operation to nab the accused.

A case has been registered. Three teams have been tasked, from Beta 2 Police Station, to nab the accused. We'll examine the CCTV footage and the incident will be unveiled soon," the senior police officer said.

Further information is awaited in the case.

Earlier, a 20-year-old woman was killed in the early hours of New Year in the national capital after her scooty was hit by a car and she was reportedly dragged for several kilometres under the vehicle on the city's roads.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has ordered a detailed enquiry into the matter by IPS Officer Shalini Singh who is currently posted as the Special Commissioner of the Delhi Police's Economic Offences Wing (EOW).

In a significant development in the Kanjhawala case, the Delhi Police have found a CCTV footage in which the deceased woman Anjali and her friend, identified by police as Nidhi, were seen coming out of a hotel at around 1.30 am on January 1.

CCTV footage accessed by ANI shows both the women leaving the hotel on a scooty with Anjali on the pillion seat and Nidhi riding. The other woman, who was traced out by police during the investigation, has been identified by the police as Nidhi a friend of the deceased Anjali.

In the CCTV footage from outside the hotel, Anjali could be seen wearing a pink coloured jacket while Nidhi could be spotted in a Red Jacket.

According to the police, during investigations, Nidhi revealed that after covering a distance, Anjali told her that she will ride the scooty following which Nidhi sat on the pillion seat.
