Tejashwi Yadav Ticks Off RJD MLA For Attack On Party MP Manoj Jha

Jumping to the defence of MP Manoj Jha, who has been criticised by his own party MLA as well as the BJP for a poem on 'Thakurs' that he recited in parliament, senior Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav has said that it was a comment on social inequality and not related to any caste.

He has also ticked off the MLA, Chetan Anand, who spoke against Mr Jha, and said that all problems should be brought up in party forums and not in public.

During a discussion on the Women's Reservation Bill - which has now become law - Mr Jha, who is an RJD Rajya Sabha MP, had made a strong, emotional pitch for ensuring that women from SCs, STs and Other Backward Classes (OBCs) get adequate representation in parliament and state legislatures. The Bill, tabled by the BJP during the special session, had a provision for a 'quota within the quota' for SC and ST women, but not for OBCs.

During his speech, Mr Jha read out a poem by Omprakash Valmiki, titled 'Thakur Ka Kuan', which speaks of caste inequality and how the means of production are owned by one group of people.

The poem was, however, interpreted by RJD MLA Chetan Anand and his father - gangster-turned-politician Anand Mohan - as an attack on Thakurs, who are upper-caste Rajputs.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter on Tuesday, Chetan Anand said, "We are Thakurs. We take everyone along. Targeting any caste in socialism is nothing but hypocrisy in the name of socialism! We cannot hear anything wrong that is said about others and we will not tolerate indecent comments made about us (Thakurs)."

Asked about the controversy, Tejashwi Yadav, who is also the Bihar deputy chief minister, said in Hindi that if anyone in the RJD has a problem with something, they should raise it in a party forum and not just tweet about it.

"Manoj Jha is a professor at Delhi University and has also won the 'Best Parliamentarian' award. He was speaking on the Women's Reservation Bill and on ensuring that OBC women and minority women also get proper representation. He recited Omprakash Valmiki's poem in that context. Even today, only a few people are running the country and are selling off its properties," said Mr Yadav.

"Most of the land is also owned by a few people. We are socialists. The recitation of the poem was not aimed at hurting the sentiments of one community but to emphasise the need to ensure equality in society. Now people from the BJP are attacking us. BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri used communal, objectionable words in parliament but no action has been taken against him," he added.

Mr Yadav said the RJD has more Rajput MLAs and MLCs than the BJP and that his party takes everyone along.

In a reference to some BJP functionaries, the deputy chief minister said, "People are threatening to cut off Mr Jha's tongue and attack him. We would not tolerate anyone from our party saying things like this against the BJP."

RJD chief Lalu Yadav had also defended Mr Jha on Thursday and said that Chetan Anand and his father are stoking the controversy for their personal gain.

"Those people who are making noise about Manoj Jha's statement are trying to galvanise the support of members of their caste. They ought to refrain from doing so," news agency PTI had  quoted Lalu Yadav as saying

On Chetan Anand and his father accusing Mr Jha of "Brahmin chauvinism", the RJD chief had quipped "what to do when they have so little intelligence".

"Congress Abused Entire Backward Community In Name Of Modi": PM's Jibe At Rahul Gandhi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday accused the Congress of seeking to divide women in the name of caste and by spreading lies, as he launched a fierce counter-attack on the party over its demand of OBC sub-quota in women's reservation in legislatures.

Addressing a large crowd to mark the end of the BJP's 'parivartan yatra' in Congress-ruled Chhattisgarh, he invoked his own OBC background to assert that the country's main opposition hates him and has not stopped abusing the backwards, Dalits and tribals despite its leader being sentenced by court, an apparent reference to Rahul Gandhi.

Mr Gandhi was convicted by a Gujarat court for his "Modi surname" remarks. The Supreme Court has stayed the conviction.

A member from a backward community became Prime Minister and that is why the Congress dislikes him so much, as it believes that the chair was "reserved" for it, PM Modi alleged.

"The Congress does not shy from abusing the entire backward community in the name of Modi," he said.

The Prime Minister also made it all but clear that the BJP will not be projecting any chief ministerial candidate in the state, telling party workers that it has only one leader and one candidate which is 'lotus'.

"We have to win over the heart of every voter at booths," he said, asserting that people have decided to get rid of the Congress government mired in "corruption" and "scams" in every scheme.

Turning to the women's reservation law and the opposition's demand for an OBC quota within it, he asked the women to stay united and continue "blessing" him amid attempts to spread lies and divide them in the name of caste.

The Congress, the Prime Minister said, is full of anger and has lost its sleep as it seems to the party that mothers and sisters will bless him for this.

"Due to this fear, they (Congress) are playing new games. They want to sow division among our sisters because they know if you remain united, their game is over," he said.

They are working to divide women in the name of caste and resorting to various tactics, he said.

"I want to tell women of Chhattisgarh that this decision (law) will have an impact for thousands of years. It will empower women in every family... You should not fall for their lies and stay united. You maintain your blessings for me so that Modi can fulfil all your dreams," he said.

PM Modi claimed that opposition parties like the Congress supported the bill in Parliament despite not wanting to do so because of unity and awareness among women.

Only two AIMIM MPs opposed the bill in Lok Sabha and none in Rajya Sabha.

Accusing the Congress of hating the OBCs, Dalits and tribals, he said it opposed the candidature of Ram Nath Kovind, a Dalit, for the president's post and then opposed the ruling party's choice of Droupadi Murmu, who went on the become the first tribal woman to occupy the highest constitutional position.

He asserted that the Congress' opposition to Murmu was not on any ideological ground, as the party and other opposition leaders fielded someone who came from the BJP and not someone who represented their ideology.

Former BJP leader Yashwant Sinha was fielded by opposition parties against Murmu.

It is the old Congress mindset that it cannot see any backward, dalit and tribal person rising, he alleged, adding that it only supports those who bow to a particular family.

For the BJP, social justice is the way to make a developed India, he asserted.

The Congress government in Chhattisgarh has been slow in implementing the Centre's housing and piped water schemes for the poor as it does not like "Modi and Modi's schemes".

As the state government can't get to pocket money from these schemes, they are not keen to implement them, he alleged.

P Chidambaram Calls Women's Quota Law "A Pie In The Sky", Vice-President Hits Back

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Saturday hit out at Congress leader P Chidambaram for his remarks that reservation for women in legislatures was still years away, saying it is shameful to convert ignorance of the people into political equity.

Addressing an event here, Mr Dhankhar said he lacked words to express his anguish on the remarks made on the women's reservation law by a "senior member of the Rajya Sabha who had been a Union minister and has held high profile positions".

Without naming Mr Chidambaram, Mr Dhankhar spoke on the former Union minister's comments, "What is the use of a law that will not be implemented for several years, certainly not before the 2029 Lok Sabha elections?"

Mr Dhankhar referred to Mr Chidambaram's remarks posted on X last night that the women's reservation law is a "teasing illusion, a reflection of the moon in a bowl of water or a pie in the sky".

The Vice President dubbed it a "distorted mindset" and wondered whether a sapling planted today would start giving fruits immediately or whether a person would get a degree soon after admission to an institute.

"It is shameful to convert ignorance of the people into political equity," he said.

The Vice President said the youth of today will have to fight this as they have access to information.

The bill to provide 33 per cent reservation to women in Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies was passed by the Lok Sabha with near unanimity and the Rajya Sabha with unanimity during the special session of Parliament.

President Droupadi Murmu gave assent to the bill on Thursday. Now, it will be officially known as the Constitution (106th Amendment) Act.

According to its provision, "It shall come into force on such date as the central government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, appoint." During a special session of Parliament earlier this month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the law as "Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam".

The law will take some time before being implemented as the next Census and the subsequent delimitation exercise - redrawing of Lok Sabha and assembly constituencies - will ascertain the particular seats being earmarked for women.

The quota for women in the Lok Sabha and assemblies will continue for 15 years and Parliament can later extend the benefit period.

While there is quota within quota for Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) women, the opposition had demanded that the benefit be extended to Other Backward Classes.

It had also pressed for its immediate implementation.

There had been several efforts to pass the bill in Parliament since 1996. The last such attempt was made in 2010, when Rajya Sabha had passed a bill for women's reservation, but the same could not be passed in Lok Sabha.

Communal Tension In Jaipur As Mob Kills Man Due To Misunderstanding: Police

Communal tension erupted in Jaipur's Ramganj and its surrounding areas after a man died after he was allegedly beaten by a mob following an accident involving two motorcycles, the police said on Saturday.

Police Commissioner Biju George Joseph said that the incident was the result of a misunderstanding.

Two motorcycles collided in Subhash Chowk after which a group of men present there thrashed two bystanders, mistaking them for being responsible for the accident, he said

“After the accident, an unfortunate incident of road rage occurred in which two men, who stopped to see what had happened, were thrashed by a group of people,” Mr Joseph told reporters.

“One of the two died. An FIR has been registered after which we have detained several people involved. The situation is normal now and complete peace will be restored soon,” he added.

Another police official said the accused live in the Subhash Chowk area while the victim was from the city's Ramganj area. Both the localities are in the walled city of Jaipur.

Nearly a dozen suspects have been detained in connection with the incident that took place late Friday night. The situation was under control after additional forces were deployed, they said.

The situation is under control and forces, including the Special Task Force (STF), have been deployed in adequate numbers, Director General of Police Umesh Mishra said, adding that drones are being used to monitor the area.

“Strict action as per the law will be taken against the accused,” he said.

Several shops in the Muslim-dominated areas remained shut and the family of the victim and locals gathered to demand action against the accused people.

The situation, however, did not worsen after the quick rounding up of the accused and deployment of the forces in the area, the police said.

Watch: How Baby Elephant Narrowly Escapes Lions

A video depicting a group of lions seizing the opportunity to hunt a young elephant has gone viral on social media. The footage was filmed in South Africa's Kruger National Park and was uploaded to the YouTube channel 'Latest Sightings.' The clip was originally captured by Brent Schnupp and was shared on September 26. Since being shared, it has amassed 2.2 million views and has been liked over 1,000 times.

The opening scene of the video shows a baby elephant looking for its mother, with three lions closely trailing its every step. At one point, the baby elephant even changes course, causing the lions to react nervously. However, the calf ultimately manages to elude the big cats.

"As we drove along the park's roads, our anticipation grew. The thrill of not knowing what might be around the corner was captivating. Just as I had that thought, we came across a male lion casually crossing the road. He walked down to a small puddle. To our surprise, two other lions appeared out of nowhere and joined him-a younger male and a female. They seemed to be enjoying a peaceful moment of coexistence," Mr Schnupp told Latest Sightings.

"However, the tranquility was short-lived. Our attention was drawn to an adult female elephant emerging from the thicket ahead of us. She appeared to be in distress and was crossing the road with great haste. Little did we know at the time that she had left behind her vulnerable calf," he said.

"The lions, sensing an opportunity, came onto the road and soon realized that the mother elephant had left her calf behind. The younger male lion took the lead in chasing the defenseless baby elephant. In contrast, the older male lion just stood and watched, while the lioness also seemed uninterested," he further added.

Here are people's reactions to this video clip:

A social media user wrote, "I just love the baby elephant so much and hope he made it back to his family safely..."

"The baby elephant did so well! Always keeping an eye on what's behind," another added.

"OMG. This video really has my stress level on high alert for the baby elephant. I could hardly watch it, worrying about the fate of the baby elephant. I love him so much, and I hope and pray that his cries were heard by his Mum. I love lions equally as much but not when they become prey to each other..." a third said.

Trade Body Appeals Shopkeepers In Delhi To Not Accept Rs 2,000 Note

A traders' body has appealed to market associations, shopkeepers, traders, and factory owners across Delhi to not accept Rs 2,000 currency notes after September 29.

The Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) made this appeal in a statement on Friday.

The Reserve Bank of India on May 19 had announced the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 currency notes from circulation, and that existing notes in circulation could either be deposited in bank accounts or exchanged by September 30.

CTI's chairman Brijesh Goyal has issued "a plea to 700 market associations, shopkeepers, traders, and factory owners across Delhi, urging them not to accept Rs 2,000 notes after September 29," the statement said.

The trend of digital transactions has increased, and the government should encourage it, the CTI said.

As much as 88 per cent of the Rs 2,000 currency notes have either been deposited or exchanged at banks, and only Rs 42,000-crore worth of such notes are with public as on July 31, the RBI said on August 1.

Thai Cops Seize Drugs Worth $8.15 Million, Among Largest Hauls This Year

Thai police seized more than 15 million methamphetamine pills and other illegal substances worth 300 million baht ($8.15 million) in what authorities said on Thursday was one of the largest drug hauls so far this year.

Four people were arrested in connection with the bust, which include 420 kilograms (926 lb) of crystal methamphetamine as well as heroin at a home in Nakhon Pathom province, north of the capital Bangkok.

"This is one of the largest drug storage facilities in the middle of Thailand, in a community area," Justice Minister Tawee Sodsong told reporters.

Incoming police chief Police General Torsak Sukvimol said the overall street value of the bust was 300 million baht, adding that the drugs were produced in a neighbouring country.

Trafficking of synthetic drugs in East and Southeast Asia is surging, the United Nations said in a report earlier this year, with high volumes of methamphetamine still being produced from the Golden Triangle region where the borders of Myanmar, Thailand and Laos meet.

The region has a long history of illicit drug production and has recently served as a massive production centre for amphetamine-type stimulants, especially methamphetamine, used by Asian crime syndicates with distribution networks reaching as far as Japan and New Zealand.

British Museum Sets Up Public Hotline For 2,000 Missing Artefacts

The British Museum launched a public hotline on Tuesday asking for help to locate some 2,000 missing artefacts, revealing they were mostly ancient Greek and Roman gems and jewellery. The museum said last month it had sacked a staff member over stolen, missing or damaged items in a crisis that highlighted internal failings and led to its director quitting days later.

Home to treasures such as the Rosetta Stone and the Parthenon marbles, the British Museum houses one of the world's most visited collections and has since tightened its security.

Sixty items had now been returned, with a further 300 identified and due to be handed back imminently, the museum said in a statement.

"If you are concerned that you may be, or have been, in possession of items from the British Museum, or if you have any other information that may help us, please contact us," said a page on its website advertising a dedicated email address.

The page said it was only disclosing the types of artefacts stolen and heeding expert advice not to share full details.

It said the stolen items included gold rings, ear-rings and other pieces of jewellery dating back to ancient Greek and Roman periods as well as small objects such as gems that were often set in rings.

The museum, which is facing demands from several governments for the repatriation of historical treasures to their home countries, said it was working with London's police, "actively monitoring" the art market, and had registered the missing items on the Art Loss Register database.

The museum is also consulting an international panel of experts.

Trinamool To Send 50 Lakh Letters To Centre Over Rural Jobs Scheme Dues To West Bengal

The Trinamool Congress will send more than 50 lakh letters from people denied MGNREGA benefits in West Bengal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of the party's much-touted protests in New Delhi next month against the alleged withholding of funds by the Centre.

The party has accused the BJP-led NDA government of withholding Rs 15,000 crore of dues to Bengal under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and Gramin Awas Yojana.

The party will also send letters to Union Panchayati Raj Minister Giriraj Singh.

"West Bengal stands united against the central government's injustice, determined to claim what's rightfully ours. People's power reigns supreme in democracy," TMC's national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee said on X, formerly Twitter.

People of Bengal are raising their voice against "injustice", and those adversely impacted have written letters to the PM, seeking their rightful dues", the party said on the microblogging site.

"We have people, who are yet to get their dues even after working under the MGNREGA, to write these letters. Till now, we have collected more than 50 lakh letters. They have all sought the release of dues to Bengal under the rural jobs scheme. We are sending these letters to the offices of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Giriraj Singh," a senior TMC leader said.

Abhishek Banerjee, the party's national general secretary, and TMC MPs, MLAs and leaders from the districts will pay their respects to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat in the national capital on October 2 on his birth anniversary.

Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee, who was supposed to attend the programme in New Delhi, might not go there as she was advised ten days of rest by doctors after she suffered an injury on her left knee during a recent trip to Spain and Dubai.

A TMC delegation will meet Singh on October 3 and place before him the issue of "non-release of dues" under the MGNREGA, Bengal minister Chandrima Bhattacharya had said on September 23.

The TMC had planned to stage protests in New Delhi for dues under the rural jobs scheme to Bengal.

The ruling party in the state had claimed that despite several requests to the Delhi Police, it was denied permission to hold demonstrations in the national capital.

The TMC had, on August 30, said that it was denied permission to hold demonstrations in New Delhi as the BJP-led Union government wanted to "scuttle the voice of Bengal", a charge dubbed as "baseless" by the saffron camp.

During the TMC's Martyrs' Day rally on July 21, Abhishek Banerjee had announced that the party would launch a massive protest in Delhi on Gandhi Jayanti on October 2 against the alleged blocking of funds by the central government for Bengal under the MGNREGA and other schemes.

The chief minister held a two-day sit-in in March this year against the Centre's alleged move of "not releasing funds" to the state for MGNREGA and other welfare schemes.

The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act 2005 aims to enhance the livelihood security of households in rural areas by providing at least 100 days of guaranteed wage employment in a financial year.

95% Components Used In Our Rockets Are Domestically Sourced: ISRO Chief

About 95 per cent of components used in rockets in the country have been sourced from India, ISRO Chairperson S Somanath said on Tuesday.

Speaking at the 82nd Foundation Day of CSIR, Mr Somanath highlighted that ISRO's expertise spans the entire space domain, with all technical work, including rocket and satellite development and space applications, being carried out in-house.

He said approximately 95 per cent of the materials, devices and systems used in the Indian Space Research Organisation's rockets are domestically sourced, with only 5 per cent coming from abroad, primarily high-end electronic components.

"This achievement is a result of collaborations with various Indian laboratories, including national labs, defence labs, and CSIR labs, focusing on material indigenisation, technology capabilities, and research," he said.

Mr Somanath also highlighted significant achievements in electronics indigenisation, including the design and manufacture of critical components such as processors for rockets and main computer chips, both made in India.

"Additionally, ISRO has developed essential components, such as electromechanical actuators, DC power supply systems, battery systems, and solar cells within the country," he said.

At the Foundation Day of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar awards were also distributed to 12 young scientists.

Immunologist Dipyaman Ganguli of CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Biology, Kolkata; microbiologist Ashwani Kumar of CSIR-Institute of Microbial Technology, Chandigarh; biologist Maddika Subba Reddy of the Hyderabad-based Centre for DNA Fingerprinting Diagnostics; Akkattu T Biju of Indian Institute of Science Bengaluru; and Debabrata Maiti of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay are among the awardees.

While Ganguli has been awarded in the field of medical sciences, Kumar and Reddy have received the award for their contribution to biological sciences.

At the event, Principal Scientific Advisor Ajay Sood said there is a rationalisation of the awards to truly make it national and to make the selection process transparent.

"From the next year, there will be Vigyan Yuva Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar awards and these awards will not be seven as it is now but will number 25 and these again are meant for yuva scientists, technologists and of course the innovators in almost 12 fields and there is another one which we call others to see any other field that has not been listed," he said.

"I Also Worry...": OpenAI CEO Sam Altman On AI Regulation

The CEO of ChatGPT maker OpenAI said on Monday that it was possible to get regulation wrong but it is important and should not be feared, amid global concerns about rapid advances in artificial intelligence, or AI.

Many countries are planning AI regulation, and Britain is hosting a global AI safety summit in November, focusing on understanding the risks posed by the frontier technology and how national and international frameworks could be supported.

Sam Altman, CEO and the public face of the startup OpenAI, backed by Microsoft Corp, said during a visit to Taipei that although he was not that worried about government over-regulation, it could happen.

"I also worry about under-regulation. People in our industry bash regulation a lot. We've been calling for regulation, but only of the most powerful systems," he said.

"Models that are like 10,000 times the power of GPT4, models that are like as smart as human civilization, whatever, those probably deserve some regulation," added Sam Altman, speaking at an AI event hosted by the charitable foundation of Terry Gou, the founder of major Apple supplier Foxconn.

Mr Altman said that in the tech industry there is a "reflexive anti-regulation thing".

"Regulation has been not a pure good, but it's been good in a lot of ways. I don't want to have to make an opinion about every time I step on an airplane how safe it's going to be, but I trust that they're pretty safe and I think regulation has been a positive good there," he said.

"It is possible to get regulation wrong, but I don't think we sit around and fear it. In fact we think some version of it is important."

Terry Gou, currently running as an independent candidate to be Taiwan's next president, sat in the audience, but did not speak at the forum.

Man's Backflip Stunt In Delhi Metro Ends In Epic Fail, Internet Asks ''What Was The Need?''

These days, several videos from the Delhi Metro have created quite a buzz on the internet. Despite repeated reminders about the ban on filming videos inside the train coaches by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), clips of people dancing or performing peculiar stunts inside Delhi metro coaches have seen a massive rise. In fact, it has become a trend.

In one such video, a man attempted a backflip stunt inside the Delhi Metro only to fail miserably in the end. The video shared on the Instagram profile 'chaman flipper', shows the man getting ready for his big flip, while everybody is watching him. He makes the jump but loses control and ends up falling on his head. At the end of the video, he can be seen holding his head in pain.

Sharing the post, he wrote, “Metro mein chot lag gai. (I got hurt in the metro).”

Watch the video here:

The video has gone viral, with many social media users criticising his stunt. Many called such activities ''a nuisance'', and wondered why so many people were shooting such videos on the metro. Some others made fun of him, while others expressed concern over his fall.

"Catch this guy and hand him over to the cops. Doing such activities on the metro is risky,'' commented one user.  Another commented, ''Who asked you to perform such stunts when you don't know how to do it? You made a fool of yourself.''

A third joked, ''Due to embarrassment, he must have left the metro at the next station.'' A fourth wrote, ''If you attempt it from that low, this is bound to happen.'' A fifth added, ''Oh God, hope you are okay. If you do this in the metro, you will get hurt only.''

Last month, a video of a digital creator, who is also an athlete, doing somersaults in Bengaluru metro went viral. Filming of reels on the metro's premises has led to controversies and attracted authorities' attention. Ajit Pawar Explains His No-Show During Amit Shah's Mumbai Visit

NCP leader and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Sunday rejected speculation regarding his absence at Union Home Minister Amit Shah's programs in Mumbai a day before and said he had informed Mr Shah's office about his prior engagements in advance.

Mr Shah visited the residences of Chief Minister Ekanth Shinde, and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to take darshan of Lord Ganesh. He also went to the famous Lalbaugcha Raja pandal. Later, he delivered the Laxmanrao Inamdar Memorial Lecture at Mumbai University where he spoke about the cooperation movement.

"I was in Baramati on Friday. I have allotted my time for Pimpri Chinchwad, Pune and Baramati on Sundays, Mondays and Fridays, respectively. The annual meeting of Baramati Bazar Samiti, Barmati Bank, and Sahyog Grihnirman Sanstha was scheduled in Baramati on Friday. I had already informed Amit Shah's office about the same," Mr Pawar told reporters in Pimpri Chinchwad when asked about his absence during Mr Shah's program.

Queried about a banner projecting his nephew Rohit Pawar as the next Chief Minister, the senior NCP leader, who led a faction of MLAs to join the Shiv Sena-BJP government in July, said such propaganda is a "daydream" unless one enlists the support of 145 MLAs (out of 288).

Responding to a query on the photo shared by Praful Patel, currently with Ajit Pawar faction, with NCP founder Sharad Pawar, the deputy CM refused comments.

"Media always asks me about photographs but I do not want to comment on it. I am here to answer the questions regarding development," he said.

Ajit Pawar also said the state government is positive about giving reservations to members of the Maratha and Dhangar communities.

"All efforts are being made to take a decision within the framework of law and to ensure that quotas of other communities are not affected," he added.

Speaking on the status of the Pune Metro route extension, he said the proposal for the Pimpri to Nigdi metro extension has already reached Delhi.

"Signature of just one minister is awaited (on the file). When I go to Delhi, I will meet the concerned (minister) and get the work done. A new step will be taken towards fulfilling the dream of the metro for residents of areas from Nigdi to Katraj," he added.

Police Vehicle Set On Fire After Girl, 8, Raped By School Peon: Cops

A class 3 student of Odisha's Rayagada district was allegedly raped by a peon at the school where she studies leading to angry locals setting on fire a police vehicle, the police said on Saturday.

The alleged rape of the eight-year-old Dalit girl took place at an ashram school in Dangasil village on Friday, a senior police official said.

The locals were angry with the police for taking away the peon from them and set the vehicle on fire. They also vandalised a police jeep.

It prompted the police to wield their batons to disperse the mob and detain some persons for their alleged involvement in the violence, the police official added.

"Soon after the incident we arrested the accused and launched an investigation. Strong action will be taken against the people who vandalized the police vehicles," Rayagada Superintendent of Police Vivekanand Sharma said.

The victim is a day scholar in the school run by the Scheduled Tribe (ST), Scheduled Caste (SC) development department of the Odisha government.

The condition of the victim, who was admitted to a hospital, is stable, the police official said.

He said the accused allegedly lured the girl to an empty room of the school when she was on her way to the school after lunch at her home on Friday and raped her. The girl's friends informed the school headmaster and her mother after they spotted her bleeding profusely and crying in pain.

As the news of the incident spread the locals assembled in front of the police outpost at Dongasil and demanded that the school authority handover the accused to them. As the police did not comply with their repeated demand, the angry mob torched the police van and vandalised a jeep.

The official said, five police platoons (one platoon comprising 30 personnel) under the leadership of the additional superintendent of police of Rayagada are camping near the school as the situation is still tense.

Fearing arrests almost all male residents have fled from the village.

The accused peon has been suspended and the school headmaster has been issued a show cause, an official said.

The Chairperson of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) of Rayagada, Bidulata Huika has expressed serious concern over the incident. She along with a team of CWC members met the victim and her mother at the Rayagada government hospital.

The team assured them of justice.

Skincare Tips: Steaming Your Face? Doctor Shares Everything You Need To Know

Face steaming is a skincare technique that involves exposing the face to steam in order to open up the pores, cleanse the skin, and promote relaxation. It is typically done by leaning over a bowl of hot water or using a specialised facial steamer.

Face steaming can be beneficial for the skin in several ways. It helps to soften the skin, making it easier to remove dirt, oil, and impurities. Steaming also increases blood circulation, which can give your complexion a healthy glow. Additionally, it can aid in the absorption of skincare products and provide a soothing and relaxing experience. Dr. Jushya Bhatia Sarin shares everything you need to know about face steaming.

Look at her post:

Here are some dos and don'ts of face steaming:

Dos:

  1. Do cleanse your face before steaming to remove any makeup or dirt.
  2. Do use a towel to create a tent over your head while steaming to trap the steam and maximise its effects.
  3. Do steam your face for about 5-10 minutes to avoid overexposure and potential skin damage.
  4. Do follow up with a gentle exfoliation or face mask to further cleanse and nourish the skin.
  5. Do moisturise your skin after steaming to lock in hydration and keep your skin supple.

Don'ts:

  1. Don't steam your face for too long or too frequently, as it can lead to skin dryness or irritation.
  2. Don't use boiling water for steaming, as it can cause burns. Opt for hot water at a safe temperature.
  3. Don't apply too much pressure or scrub your skin aggressively during or after steaming, as it can damage the skin's protective barrier.
  4. Don't forget to protect your skin from the sun after steaming, as it can become more sensitive to UV rays.
  5. Don't steam your face if you have certain skin conditions like rosacea or sensitive skin, as it may exacerbate the symptoms.

Remember, face steaming should be done in moderation and tailored to your skin type and needs. If you have any concerns or specific skin conditions, it's always best to consult with a dermatologist before incorporating face steaming into your skincare routine.

What Delhi Court Said On Employing Men As Nurses In Armed Forces

When a woman officer can be posted in Siachen, a man can also be employed as a nurse in the Army, the Delhi High Court observed on Tuesday as it pitched for gender equality in the armed forces.

A bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Sanjeev Narula was hearing a petition about the alleged unconstitutional practice of having only women nurses in military establishments.

Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, representing the Centre, said the practices in the Army are based on long-standing traditions.
She, however, said the government has just now brought in legislation to grant 33 per cent reservation to women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.

"Yes, in parliament... On one hand, you are talking about empowering women and on the other, you are saying men cannot join as nurses... If a woman (officer) can be posted in Siachen, then a man can work in R&R (Hospital)," the bench said.

The bench also said the Supreme Court has permitted women to join the National Defence Academy and it has time and again held that there should be no gender bias.

Bhati told the bench the central government has filed its response in the matter.

Advocate Amit George, representing the petitioner Indian Professional Nurses Association, said now there are male nurses in all hospitals and even the Supreme Court has said the practice of excluding one gender from the services has no place even in a military ecosystem.

The High Court said it is an important issue which requires deliberation and listed the petition for further hearing in November.

The High Court had earlier sought the Centre's stand on the plea challenging the "illegal practice" of appointing only women as military nurses.

In its plea, the association has said there are several thousand trained and qualified male nurses in India and their omission from the nursing corps of the Army was "unjustifiable and unconstitutional inasmuch as it deprives them of an avenue of employment and professional advancement".

"The said omission also deprives the military and the nation of a large pool of committed professionals," the petition, filed through advocates George and Rishabh Dheer, said.

The PIL has challenged the provisions of the Military Nursing Service Ordinance, 1943 and the Military Nursing Service (India) Rules, 1944 to the extent that they provide only for the appointment of women as nurses.

It has contended the ordinance and the rules "also perpetuate the stigmatisation and ostracism of male nurses, by singling them out and making them feel unwanted".

It has said such discrimination is contrary to the constitutional scheme and is, therefore, "ex-facie unconstitutional, illegal and arbitrary".

In 2018, the high court termed as "gender discrimination" the Indian Army's practice of having only women in its nursing service while granting time to the Centre to decide on the issue.

"Jadavpur University Students Forced To Strip, Rub Face On Wall": Panel

First-year students of Jadavpur University who lived at the boys' hostel were allegedly made to rub their faces against the wall and stay atop almirahs indefinitely, found a committee formed by the institution to investigate incidents of ragging on campus.

The committee was formed after the death of an undergraduate student on August 10, allegedly due to ragging on campus.

"They were forced to strip down to their undergarments, and then do activities like standing atop an almirah, rubbing one's face against the wall, 'frog-jumps' and crawling under the cots," said the report, which was prepared after interviewing hundreds of students living in the hostels.

The freshers, who are referred to as 'bachha' (child), were forced to wash their seniors' clothes, write assignments for them and run errands, including getting liquor, cigarettes and food from nearby markets at late hours, it claimed.

The freshers were also forced to hurl expletives at female residents of the adjacent police quarters, and the punishment for refusal would include a beating, it added.

The first-year student had died after falling from the balcony of the boys' hostel. His family has alleged that he was a victim of ragging.

The report claimed that what happened that evening was not merely an isolated incident of ragging, but a regular practice.

"The spot of the accident was washed by a group of boarders with water, following the instruction of one of the seniors, after the victim was rushed to the hospital in a yellow taxi around midnight on August 9," it said.

"Information regarding the movements, just prior to his fatal fall, is rather uncertain and vague, as none of the witnesses gave a clear-cut description of the incident, which could help in ascertaining the cause and sequence of the mishap," it added.

The committee alleged that the victim was singled out for severe pre-planned ragging, which included possible sexual abuse.

Thirteen people, all former or current students, were arrested in connection with the case.

"Only Tokenism, Congress Never Serious About Women's Quota": Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah slammed the Opposition, particularly the Congress, for showing only "tokenism" on the Narshakti Vandan Adhiniyam and said the party has never been serious about women's reservation in legislative bodies.

The Congress either let legislation lapse or their friendly parties prevented the women's reservation bill from being tabled, he said.

The Home Minister said that across the length and breadth of India, people are rejoicing the introduction of the Narishakti Vandan Adhiniyam in Parliament, which shows the unwavering commitment of the Modi government to empower women.

"Sadly, the Opposition is unable to digest this. And, what is more shameful is that except for tokenism, Congress has never been serious about women's reservations. Either they let legislation lapse or their friendly parties prevented the bill from being tabled. Their double standards will never be hidden, whatever stunts they try to take credit," he wrote on X.

The government on Tuesday introduced a constitutional amendment bill to reserve a third of seats in the Lok Sabha and the state assemblies for women, reviving a bill pending for 27 years for want of consensus among parties.

Making it the first bill to be introduced in the new Parliament building, the government said it will enable greater participation of women in policy-making at the state and national levels and help achieve the goal of making India a developed country by 2047.

Samajwadi Party, Fiercest Critic Of Women's Quota Bill, To Support It? What MP Said

Soon after the women's reservation bill was tabled in the Lok Sabha by the centre, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, whose party has been a fierce critic of the bill in its present form since its inception 27 years ago, said the quota should be a balance of gender justice and social justice. Referencing PDA -- Pichde, Dalit, Alpasankhyak (Backward Classes, Dalits, Minorities), his formula to defeat the ruling BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls -- he said reservation for them should be clear in definite percentage form.

Amid speculations about the reaction of INDIA bloc parties who have been opposed to the bill, Rajya Sabha MP Ram Gopal Yadav, Secretary-General of Akhilesh Yadav's party, told NDTV that they will offer support to the bill, but also put forth their position.

"We have never been against women's reservation, but our objection was about the present form of the bill. We were demanding since the beginning that there should be reservation for OBC women according to their population. Members of the majority party, the BJP, and their colleagues, and many others, don't favour OBC women. Our party will support the bill, but we will try for reservation for OBC women in future as well. I am sure that one day the number of those people who are of the opinion that OBC women should get reservation will be a majority in this house, and we will do it," he said.

Samajwadi Party leaders, along with others from Lalu Yadav's RJD and Sharad Yadav who once headed the JD(U), had tried to disrupt the passage of the bill on several occasions, by storming the well of the house, and even trying to snatch the copy of the bill while it was being introduced.

In 2008, when the bill was introduced in the Rajya Sabha, Samajwadi Party MP Abu Asim Azmi and his party colleagues had tried to snatch the bill copy from then law minister Hansaraj Bhardwaj.

Akhilesh Yadav's father and party patriarch late Mulayam Singh Yadav had at least twice courted controversy for his remarks on how the reservation would benefit only affluent women.

In 2012, when asked about his demand for a quota within the quota, he remarked "...bade ghar ki ladkiya aur mahilayen ko fayda milega... humari gaon ki gareeb mahilayon ko nahin... akarshak nahi hoti...bas itna kahunga... jyada nahi... (The women reservation bill in its present form would only benefit rich and urban women... our poor and rural women are not attractive... will not say beyond this)."

Two years earlier, when the bill was tabled in the Rajya Sabha for approval in March 2010, he said, "The Women's Reservation Bill, if passed in present format, would provoke young men to whistle in parliament."

"Wonderful Idea": Kangana Ranaut On Woman's Reservation Bill

Actor Kangana Ranaut, who was among the special women invitees at the Parliament, on Tuesday extended support to the Women's Reservation Bill, which was introduced today in the first sitting of Lok Sabha in the new Parliament building.

Talking to the media Kangana Ranaut said, "This is a wonderful idea, this is all because of our honourable PM Modi and this govt and his (PM Modi) thoughtfulness towards the upliftment of women."

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that the government is bringing a new Bill to reserve one-third of all seats for women in the Lok Sabha and the state legislative assemblies and that God has given him the opportunity to take forward the task of women empowerment.

While talking exclusively to ANI, actor Esha Gupta also extended her support to the new reservation bill and said, "It's a beautiful thing that PM Modi has taken this step during the first session in the new Parliament. It's a very progressive thought...I had thought of joining politics since childhood...Let's see if this bill is passed, you will see me in 2026..."

Horses Dragged Behind Pickup Truck In US, Driver Ignores Calls To Stop

Animal cruelty is a serious issue around the world. It is estimated that billions of animals are abused and neglected every year. This digital age has helped highlight this issue prominently. Periodically, videos and images surface, vividly showcasing instances of animal abuse perpetrated by individuals who unfortunately regard it as routine and acceptable behavior.

In a recent incident that gained widespread attention on the internet, a video emerged showing a distressing scene in Utah, United States. The footage captured the sight of two horses being forcibly dragged behind a pickup truck along a residential street.

This shocking incident has ignited outrage and calls for immediate action to address such acts of cruelty and ensure the welfare of animals.

"It was just horrible to watch! The driver didn't stop until he was at the stop sign, even when others were yelling at him to stop," Amberly Powers, who provided the home security camera footage to the news media, said.

The incident happened on September 8 in Farmington.

Powers says she is the woman in the video with the long ponytail, and the only thing the driver said to her as she got up close to take additional photos was, "This horse is stubborn!"

According to Fox News, her neighbour, Don Evans, also caught footage of the livestock tied to the back of the vehicle. He was not home at the time but was asked by a neighbour to review his surveillance cameras.

"Sick to my stomach, outraged, in disbelief," he told KUTV after seeing the footage of one of the horses struggling to keep up with the pace of the truck. "I have not seen this amount of reckless disregard in my life; it's horrendous, and there's a lot of outrage in the community over this."

"Importing Cheetahs, Letting Them Die...": BJP's Varun Gandhi Attacks Own Party Again

In yet another attack on his own party and the Centre, BJP MP Varun Gandhi has termed bringing cheetahs from Africa and allowing them to die "cruelty and negligence", and called for a focus on conserving India's endangered species.

Mr Gandhi's remarks come in the backdrop of nine cheetah deaths in Madhya Pradesh's Kuno National Park in a span of five months, and amid reports of the next batch of the big cats being brought from South Africa and introduced into the state's Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary.

As part of Project Cheetah, the first batch of the big cats, brought from Namibia, had been released in Kuno National Park by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his birthday -  September 17 - last year. Sunday will be the first anniversary of Project Cheetah.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Mr Gandhi tagged a report on the another batch of cheetahs and said, "Importing cheetahs from Africa and allowing nine of them to die in a foreign land is not just cruelty, it's an appalling display of negligence. We should focus on conserving our own endangered species and habitats rather than contributing to the suffering of these magnificent creatures."

"This reckless pursuit of exotic animals must end immediately, and we should prioritise the welfare of our native wildlife instead," his post said.

This is far from the first time that the MP from Uttar Pradesh's Pilibhit has attacked his own party or a government headed by the BJP. At an event in Uttar Pradesh last month, he had asked people not to disturb a sadhu (ascetic) and said nobody knows "when 'maharaaj ji' will become the chief minister".

The ascetic's phone had started ringing, but Mr Gandhi had stopped BJP workers from asking him to switch it off.  "Please do not not stop him, never know when 'maharaaj ji' will become the chief minister. Then what will happen to us?" he had been quoted as saying by news agency PTI. The joke was seen as a dig at the government in Uttar Pradesh.

Kuno National Park has seen the reintroduction of 20 adult cheetahs since September last year, and four cubs have been born there since then. Nine of the cheetahs, including three cubs, had died in a span of five months till early August this year.

Some experts had attributed the cheetah deaths to the use of sub-standard radio collars, but the government had dismissed the charge as "speculation and hearsay without scientific evidence".

Hearing a petition on the deaths, the Supreme Court had said last month that there was no reason to question the government on the moves being made to reintroduce cheetahs in India.

In an interview with PTI, Project Cheetah head SP Yadav said that the next batch of cheetahs will be imported from South Africa and introduced in the Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary, which will be ready to welcome them by the end of the year.

Now, New Delhi Station To Airport In Just 15 Minutes By Metro

In a major feat, trains will run at a speed of 120 kmph on the Airport Line of the Delhi Metro from Sunday onwards, the officials said.

This increase in the speed of trains on India's fastest metro corridor gradually from 90 kmph to 120 kmph has been made possible by "meticulous planning and time-bound implementation by DMRC's engineers in consultation with a number of other government agencies and domain experts," they said.

"From September 17 onwards, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is going to operate the Airport Express Line at a massive speed of 120 kilometres per hour," the DMRC said in a statement.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the first phase of India International Convention and Expo Centre (IICC), named YashoBhoomi, in Dwarka and also the extension of Delhi Metro's Airport Express Line from Dwarka Sector 21 to a new metro station at Dwarka Sector 25 on Sunday.

The extension of Delhi Metro's Airport Express Line from Dwarka Sector 21 to Yashobhoomi Dwarka Sector 25 will become operational from 3 pm onwards on September 17, officials said on Friday.

Sources on Saturday said the enhanced speed is likely to be implemented on this line after the inauguration of the extension of the Airport Line.

The current operational Airport Express Line spans from the New Delhi metro station to Dwarka Sector 21 station.

The total journey from New Delhi to Yashobhoomi Dwarka Sector-25 will take about 21 minutes.

Earlier, the travel time between New Delhi and Dwarka Sector 21 was approximately 22 minutes, and now it has reduced to around 19 minutes between these two stations, leading to a saving of three minutes.

The approximate travel time between New Delhi and Terminal 3 of the Delhi Airport will be about 15 minutes and 30 seconds. Earlier, it was a little more than 18 minutes, the DMRC said.

To facilitate the movement of the trains at such a high speed, over 2.6 lakh tension clamps were replaced on the entire corridor. The bulk of the work was carried out in the night time from 11 pm till 7 am to ensure minimal hindrance to the smooth operation of services. Over 100 workers were deployed at a time for this work, the statement said.

Before taking up this mammoth exercise, the efficacy of these clamps was checked on a kilometre-long trial track. Various measurements including vibration and stresses on rails were carried out using advanced instruments on this trial track before implementing the same on the main corridor, officials said.

The estimated timeline for the completion of this task was 18 months. However, the DMRC took the challenge and successfully ensured the completion of the work within just six months, it added.

A highly advanced system consisting of 3D accelerometers and strain censors was deployed for continuous measurement of vibrations and strains on the tracks at different speed levels. Oscillation monitoring was performed at speeds from 90 kmph to 120 kmph to ascertain smooth movement at higher speed levels, the DMRC said.

Tremendous efforts were put in by DMRC officials to analyse the measurement data at various speeds to understand the behaviour and response of the system, the officials said.

The signalling infrastructure also required verification of all software and safety certifications of the main system and the subsystems at such high speed. The interface testing with rolling stock and passenger information systems was also checked in detail, the statement said.

"The working of the Passenger Screen Doors (PSDs) in coordination with the movement of the train was also done. Extensive testing of all signalling equipment was conducted in a graded manner involving track, rolling stock, and traction for over two months," it added.

During the non-revenue hours, the overhead equipment (OHE) system was also made suitable for the movement of trains at 120 kmph. Eventually, after all these efforts, Delhi Metro increased the operational speed of Metro trains on the Airport Express Line from 90 kmph to 100 kmph on March 22 this year, the officials said.

The speed of the trains was further increased to 110 kmph on June 22, which shall be further increased to 120 kmph from tomorrow. The safety certification for the same has already been received earlier this month, the DMRC said.
