Punjab Man With PhD, 4 Master's Degrees Sells Vegetables To Make Ends Meet

With four Master's degrees and a PhD to his name, a man in Punjab is selling vegetables to make ends meet. Dr. Sandeep Singh, 39, was a contractual professor at Punjabi University in Patiala. However, unfortunate circumstances led him to leave the job and take up selling vegetables to earn money.

Dr. Sandeep Singh was a professor in Punjabi University's law department for 11 years. He has done his PhD in law and has four Master's degrees in subjects including Punjabi, journalism and political science and is still pursuing studies. He left his job after facing hurdles such as salary cut and irregular pay. "I had to leave the job because I didn't use to get my salary on time and there was frequent pay cut. It had become difficult for me to make ends meet with that job. That's why I switched to selling vegetables for the survival of me and my family."

With his vegetable cart and a board saying "PhD Sabzi Wala", Dr. Sandeep Singh goes home to home every day to sell vegetables. He says he earns more money by selling vegetables than he did as a professor. After a full day of work, he goes back home and studies for his exam.

Even though he has taken a break from teaching, Dr. Sandeep Singh has not given up his passion. He aspires to save money and open his own tuition centre one day.

"He Supported Us...": Zerodha's Nithin Kamath On Father's Role In His Professional Journey

Founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Zerodha Nithin Kamath recently shared a heartwarming post about his father. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Mr Kamath shared how his father supported him and his brother Nikhil Kamath whenever they attempted something on their own. "Luck is a big part of any success in life. It starts right from birth, with our genes, parents, family, etc.-all of these are the luck of the draw," Mr Kamath, who founded online trading firm Zerodha in 2010, wrote.

"None of the success that's ascribed to us would have happened without my father. He was not only the biggest cheerleader of  (Nikhil Kamath) @nikhilkamathcio and me but also the first customer whenever we attempted something. In a way, he was our VC," the post read.

"He gave me the initial seed capital when I decided to trade, he was my first customer when I did multi-level marketing, and the first customer when I started a sub-brokerage and portfolio management business. He supported us in anything that we tried, no matter how foolish it seemed in hindsight. All of this with the limited resources he had access to," Mr Kamath added.

Further, the entrepreneur revealed that his father gave him the initial seed capital when he decided to trade. His father was also the first customer when he did multi-level marketing, and the first customer when he started a sub-brokerage and portfolio management business. "He supported us in anything that we tried, no matter how foolish it seemed in hindsight. All of this with the limited resources he had access to," Mr Kamath said.

The Zerodha CEO went on to recall an emotional moment in his professional journey as well that involved his father. He said he was once invited to speak at Canara Bank where his father worked his entire life and was also sitting in the audience as he delivered his speech.

Mr Kamath concluded his post by giving a shoutout to all fathers and mothers involved behind the scenes of almost every successful person.

Families Hope For Pardon After Qatar Commutes Sailors' Death Sentences

The families of eight Navy veterans in Qatar has told NDTV that they will appeal against the commuted sentences they have received. The men, who were sentenced to death in October on charges of espionage on behalf of Israel, had their death sentences commuted today after intervention from the Indian government. They now face lengthy jail terms.

The families have denied allegations of espionage. They have also told NDTV they will immediately file an appeal – a process that could take three months. Any possibility of a royal pardon from the emir can only happen after the outcome of the appeal, sources told NDTV.

The men, who were working with Doha-based Al Dahra Global Technologies, were arrested in August last year. They are Purnendu Tiwari, Sugunakar Pakala, Amit Nagpal, and Sanjeev Gupta, who are Commanders, and Navtej Singh Gill, Birendra Kumar Verma, and Saurabh Vasisht, who are Captains. The eight is Sailor Ragesh Gopakumar.

Details of the charges against them were never made public.
While their death sentences were commuted today – weeks after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with Qatari ruler Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani -- the details of the reduced sentences are unclear as the judgement has not yet been released.

"Due to the confidential and sensitive nature of proceedings of this case, it would not be appropriate to make any further comment at this juncture," the foreign ministry said. The government also said it is in "close touch with the legal team, as well as family members, to decide on the next steps".

"We have stood by them since the beginning, and we will continue to extend all consular and legal assistance. We will also continue to take up the matter with Qatari authorities," the ministry added.

A 2015 treaty on transfer of sentenced persons can also come to the aid of the Navy veterans.

Under the treaty, signed during the visit of Qatari Foreign Minister Dr. Khalid Bin Mohammed Al Attiyah to India, Indian prisoners convicted in Qatar can be brought to India to serve the remaining part of their sentence. Qatari citizens convicted in India can be sent to their home country to serve their sentence.

Pak Court Suspends Order Depriving Imran Khan's Party Of Bat Symbol

Jailed former prime minister Imran Khan's party partially won a legal battle when the Peshawar High Court on Tuesday suspended an order of the election commission to deprive the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf of its electoral symbol of a cricket 'bat'.

The Election Commission of Pakistan last week in a verdict rejected the intra-party polls of Mr Khan's party and also stopped it from using 'bat' as the party's electoral symbol.

The party had challenged the verdict in the Peshawar High Court where after a detailed hearing, Justice Kamran Hayat Miankhel suspended the ECP ruling until the final adjudication of the petition.

"It is the victory of justice and we hope that in the final decision, the court would permanently revoke the ECP ruling," said Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, who was elected as the party's new chairman in the intra-party polls held in Peshawar earlier this month.

During the hearing, PTI counsel Barrister Ali Zafar highlighted that when a party provides its intra-party poll details to the ECP, the commission typically issues a certificate and posts it on its website.

However, Mr Zafar argued that, as of now, the certificate has not yet been uploaded to the ECP website.

The PTI earlier on Tuesday challenged the ECP order and urged the court to fix the matter for hearing at the earliest.

The party insisted that the ECP's proceedings that questioned the PTI's intra-party polls were "coram non-judice (without jurisdiction) and without lawful authority".

It urged the court to direct the ECP to publish the results of the PTI's intra-party polls on its website and restore the symbol of the party.

Imran Khan is currently incarcerated in corruption cases, including in the Toshakhana case. He was granted bail in the cypher case after the Supreme Court's intervention last week.

The ECP had issued a verdict following a first-of-its-kind microscopic examination of the inner workings of a political party and declared the party ineligible to obtain an election symbol to contest the upcoming general elections.

"It is held that PTI has not complied with our directions rendered therein order dated November 23, 2023, and failed to hold an intra-party election following PTI prevailing Constitution, 2019 and Election Act, 2017, and Election Rules, 2017," the ECP had said in its 11-page order.

The party had announced to challenge it and got partial relief, which is also a victory of the PTI when it is fighting on multiple fronts to contest in the elections and get its incarcerated leader Imran Khan out of jail.

The party had termed the decision part of the "famous London Plan" and a "disgusting and shameful attempt to stop PTI from [participating in the] election".

It claimed that the party would still win the general elections, maintaining that it would appeal the decision at every forum.

The PTI asserted that its candidates would contest the polls with the 'bat' symbol, come what may.

"What will happen to the 225 reserved seats if a party is stopped from participating in elections under its designated symbol?" Mr Gohar asked following the submission of the petition.

He emphasised the significance of the matter, stating it impacted 250 million people.

Meanwhile, the ECP in a post on social media platform X on Monday said it did not offer the 'bat' electoral symbol to anyone else, including Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf parliamentarian Chairman Pervez Khattak.

Mr Khattak, the leader of his faction of the PTI, on Monday stirred controversy by claiming that the 'bat' symbol was "offered" to him. He did not specify by whom.

No Plans To Bring 1 Lakh Migrant Workers From India: Taiwan

Taiwanese Labour Minister Hsu Ming-chun on Saturday said that the government has no plans to bring as many as 100,000 migrant workers from India to Taiwan, Taiwan's Central News Agency (CNA) reported. His remarks come in apparent reference to the statement made by Kuomintang (KMT) presidential nominee Hou Yu-ih.

In a press release, Hsu Ming-chun said Taiwan had not signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with India to bring in migrant workers. He further said that the issue was subject to continued evaluation regarding employment cooperation.

Hsu stressed that any claims made regarding Taiwan seeking to open its doors to 100,000 Indian workers are "fake," adding that these claims have been made by "ill-intentioned people" to manipulate people's opinions for electoral gains.

Hsu Ming-chun's statement came after KMT nominee Hou cited a media report claiming that an MOU had already been signed to bring in Indian migrant workers, CNA reported.

Hou Yu-ih's statement during a televised policy presentation forum on Wednesday was a likely reference to a November 10 media report claiming a prospective MOU between Taiwan and India. The report claimed that plans were being made for an "employment mobility agreement."

The US media report, citing "senior officials familiar with the matter," claimed that an agreement to bring "as many as 100,000" Indian migrant workers to Taiwan could be signed as early as December this year,' Taiwan's Central News Agency (CNA) reported.

On Saturday, Hou's campaign office said Hsu stated in November that Taiwan and India were set to sign an MOU by the end of the year to bring in migrant workers, according to CNA report.

Given that there are only nine days left before the end of 2023, Hsu should clarify when the MOU would be signed and how many Indian workers would come to Taiwan according to the pact, Hou's office said.

Speaking to local media on November 13, Hsu Ming-chun said that Taiwan and India "are expected to sign an MOU by the end of the year" to bring in migrant workers after the Cabinet signed off on the plan. However, Hsu said in December that no date has been set yet for signing the MoU.

Delhi Maximum Temperature Settles At 24.4 Degrees, Air Quality 'Severe'

The Air Quality Index (AQI) in the national capital on Saturday was recorded in the 'severe' category, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) said.

Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 9.6 degrees Celsius, two notches above the season's average, during the day. The maximum temperature settled at 24.4 degrees Celsius, four notches above normal, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

According to the weather office, the relative humidity oscillated between 97 and 69 per cent.

The IMD has predicted dense fog for Sunday. It said the maximum and minimum temperatures will likely settle around 25 and 7 degrees Celsius respectively.

The 24-hour AQI in the national capital was recorded at 447 at 4 pm, which comes under the 'severe' category.

An AQI between zero and 50 is considered 'good', 51 and 100 'satisfactory', 101 and 200 'moderate', 201 and 300 'poor', 301 and 400 'very poor', 401 and 450 'severe' and above 450 'severe-plus'.

The Centre on Friday ordered a ban on non-essential construction work and plying of BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel four-wheelers in the Delhi-NCR amid the worsening AQI in the region.

Unfavourable meteorological conditions, including fog and haze, with low wind speed are the major causes behind this sudden spike in Delhi's daily average AQI, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), a statutory body responsible for formulating strategies to combat pollution in the region, said.

Re-invoking curbs under Stage III of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), the CAQM ordered a ban on non-essential construction work, stone crushing, and mining in the Delhi-NCR.

Chinese Doctor Punches Patient During 2019 Surgery, Video Sparks Outrage

Chinese authorities are investigating a 2019 incident where a surgeon allegedly punched an 82-year-old woman thrice in the head during surgery, a video of which caused a furore in local social media.

Though the incident occurred in December 2019, it only came to the public's attention this week after a prominent Chinese doctor, Ai Fen, shared CCTV footage of the surgery.

The video appears to show the surgeon punching the patient in the head at least three times while operating on her eyes.

The video clip of the surgeon punching the 82-year-old woman during surgery went viral on Chinese social media following which the hospital parent group, Aier China, sacked the surgeon and the CEO of the hospital, the BBC reported.

The case is being further investigated by the police.

Aier China, which operates a chain of eye hospitals, said the incident took place during an operation in its hospital in Guigang, a southwestern Chinese city.

"During the surgery, due to local anaesthesia, the patient had intolerance". She moved her head and eyeballs multiple times, it said in a statement.

As the patient could only speak a local dialect and did not appear to respond to the doctor's warnings in Mandarin, the surgeon "treated the patient roughly in an emergency".

The report said the local authorities have said the patient sustained bruises on her forehead.

After the surgery, the hospital's management apologised and paid 500 yuan (USD 70) as compensation, according to the patient's son who spoke to local media outlets.

He also said his mother is now blind in her left eye, though it is not clear whether it was due to the incident.

Aier China said the hospital failed to report the incident to the headquarters.

On Thursday it announced the dismissal of the Guiyang Hospital CEO and the suspension of the surgeon - who is also the hospital dean - over "serious violations of the group's regulations", which included other unspecified offences.

Dr Ai, who was among a group of doctors who alerted the public to the initial Wuhan Covid outbreak, had posted the clip on her Weibo account.

Dr Ai has been embroiled in legal disputes with Aier China since 2021 when she went for an operation at one of their hospitals. She has claimed she nearly became blind in one eye due to that operation, but Aier China has denied the allegation, the report said. PTI KJV AMS AKJ AMS

Kerala Records 265 Fresh Covid Cases And One Death In Last 24 Hours

Kerala reported 265 fresh Covid-19 infections and one death in the last 24 hours, according to data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The total number of active cases of Covid-19 in the country was recorded at 2,997.

Earlier on Thursday, India recorded 594 fresh COVID-19 infections - taking the number of active cases from 2,311 the previous day to 2,669, according to Union Health Ministry data.

Meanwhile, amid rising concerns over the emergence of the new variant of the Coronavirus, former World Health Organisation (WHO) chief scientist Dr Soumya Swaminathan asserted that there is no need to panic currently as it is a variant of interest and not of concern.

However, she urged people to be cautious by taking proper precautionary measures.

Speaking to ANI exclusively, Dr Soumya Swaminathan, former DG, of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said, "We need to be cautious, but we don't need to worry because we don't have any data to suggest that this variant JN.1 is more severe or it's going to cause more pneumonia, more death."

"I think what we need to do is try to take the normal preventive measures that we are all now familiar with. We were familiar with Omicron, so it's the same family. So not much has changed, but 1 or 2 new mutations have come up. And that's why I think WHO has said let's keep a watch on it. It's a variant of interest. It's not a variant of concern," said the doctor.

She further advised precautions to avoid infection, "Avoid being in a very closed environment with very poor ventilation with toxic people without a mask. So do wear a mask if you're in that type of very close setting because prolonged exposure to somebody infected increases the risk of infection"

"Try to be in an open space rather than in most cases, have gatherings and now ventilated places today, entering into the season of gatherings," said Swaminathan.

"If you have some warning symptoms and signs like severe fatigue, prolonged fever or you're feeling breathless, visit the hospital," she said.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recently classified JN.1 as a variant of interest, distinct from its parent lineage BA.2.86. However, the global health body emphasised that the overall risk posed by JN.1 remains low based on current evidence.

One Of 2 Men Who Set Off Smoke Canisters In Lok Sabha Is Mastermind: Police

The Delhi Police Special Cell suspects Manoranjan D - one of the six arrested in parliament security breach - to be the mastermind of the conspiracy hatched to send a message to the ruling government by doing "something big", said a source privy to the probe.

According to the police, Lalit Jha, another accused, revealed to the interrogators that Manoranjan D motivated others to do something big, planned the parliament breach, and that Mr Jha was tasked with destroying evidence after the act.

Manoranjan D was arrested along with Sagar from inside parliament on December 13. The two jumped into the Lok Sabha chamber and set off the smoke canisters they hid in their shoes.

A native of Mysore, Manoranjan D quit engineering to engage in social work. Despite being without a job, he managed to visit Cambodia, the source said.

Mr Jha was produced before the court on Friday that sent him to police custody for 14 days. The police told the court they needed to confront Mr Jha with other accused and collect scientific and digital evidence related to the case.

According to the source, Lalit Jha told the police that Manoranjan D had arranged for them to visit Mysore a year ago. He had sent them their tickets on WhatsApp.

The doctors are conducting psychoanalysis tests on all six, another officer said.

The accused were taken to a forensic lab for the test that will help interrogators ascertain their mental condition, the officer said.

According to the police, the accused revealed they were upset with the unemployment situation, the farmers' issue, and the Manipur crisis.

They are yet to reveal the proper sequence and reason behind their act inside and outside parliament, the police said.

Pak Court Rejects Imran Khan's Appeal Against Conviction, Says Lawyer

Pakistan's ex prime minister Imran Khan remained disqualified from contesting elections after a court rejected his plea to suspend an earlier conviction on Thursday, his lawyer said.

The decision came a day before the deadline of submitting nomination papers for the elections for provincial and national assemblies scheduled for Feb. 8.

The 70-year-old former cricket star has been at the centre of a political crisis since he was ousted in a parliamentary confidence vote in April 2022.

Khan was imprisoned on Aug. 5 after being sentenced to three years jail on charges of unlawfully selling state gifts during his tenure as prime minister from 2018 to 2022. He denies any wrongdoing and says the charges are politically motivated.

He was seeking to overturn that conviction which has barred him from contesting elections for five years.

"Imran Khan's request to suspend the decision in the Tosha Khana criminal case was rejected so that the disqualification would remain," Khan's lawyer and spokesman on legal affairs, Naeem Haider Panjutha, said on X.

In addition to other cases, Khan pleaded not guilty on Dec. 13 to charges of leaking state secrets under an indictment that dealt a further blow to his chances of contesting the vote.

The charges are related to a classified cable sent to Islamabad by Pakistan's ambassador in Washington last year, which Khan is accused of making public.

Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party will be facing former prime minister Nawaz Sharif's party as its main opponent in the vote.

Jailed Ex-Pak PM Imran Khan To Contest Polls From At Least 3 Constituencies, Says Party

Pakistan's jailed former prime minister Imran Khan will contest the upcoming general elections from at least three constituencies despite conviction and incarceration, his party announced on Wednesday.

On August 5, the 71-year-old former cricketer-turned-politician was convicted by a trial court in Islamabad in the Toshakahana corruption case filed by the Election Commission of Pakistan and arrested.

The verdict meant the founding chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party was disqualified from contesting elections for five years. However, days later the Islamabad High Court (IHC) suspended his three-year sentence and he remains in jail in other cases. His conviction has not been set aside so far, making him ineligible for any public office.

However, undeterred by the legal hurdles, PTI leader Ali Zafar said that Khan would contest in the February 8 general election.

"We want to inform you that Imran Khan will contest elections from at least three constituencies and we hope that the IHC will announce its judgment soon in the Toshakhana case, as the election schedule has been issued," Mr Zafar told the media outside Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.

Newly-appointed PTI chief Barrister Gohar Khan said that Mr Khan would contest from the Lahore, Islamabad and Mianwali constituencies.

Gohar added that Mr Khan would be provided with his nomination papers tomorrow, vowing that "Khan sahib will contest these polls, God willing".

He said he too would participate in the upcoming polls from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Buner constituency.

Mr Khan was disqualified by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for five years from holding any public office following the Toshakhana case verdict after he was found guilty of corrupt practices under Section 167 of the Elections Act, 2017. Mr Khan faces scores of cases, most of them registered after his ouster from power in April 2022.

In a related development, PTI chief Gohar Khan alleged that hurdles were being created for their candidates to contest the elections. "The nomination papers were snatched from Shah Mahmood Qureshi's secretary in Adiala jail," he claimed.

Mr Qureshi is the Vice President of the party and is currently incarcerated in the Adiala Jail in the cipher case. Mr Khan has also been kept in the same jail.

Mr Zafar said that the PTI workers had been given directions to file their nomination papers.

"As long as the PTI candidates are concerned, our workers in jail, who have rendered sacrifices for the party in this difficult time, would be 100 percent allotted tickets on a priority basis," he said.

"The rest of the candidates have also been finalised and their names will be announced soon," Mr Zafar added.

He added that stopping party workers from filing nomination papers was an "undemocratic exercise" and would jeopardise free and fair elections.

Ahead Of INDIA Bloc Meet, Arvind Kejriwal Greets Opposition Leaders

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, summoned by the Enforcement Directorate for questioning, is meeting a flurry of Opposition leaders who are in Delhi for tomorrow's INDIA Bloc meet.

Earlier today, he met Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. It is not known what they discussed in the 45-minute meeting.

A meeting with Uddhav Thackeray and his close aide Sanjay Raut was held later in the evening. Tomorrow, he is expected to meet Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin.

Mr Kejriwal was summoned for questioning by the ED today. This was the second time he was summoned. He had skipped the first summons citing the recently concluded Assembly elections.

While his office has not responded to the latest sumons yet, the Aam Aadmi Party said he has Vipassana classes boked months earlier.

One can skip summons from a Central agency thrice, after which a non-bailable warrant is issued. AAP has spoken at length on the possibility of Mr Kejriwal's arrest.

Tomorrow's INDIA meet is expected to be crucial in view of the Congress's electoral reverses in the heartland states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. The party lost Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh to the BJP and failed to win Madhya Pradesh -- a situation that has opened it to massive criticism from INDIA allies.

Today, Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress declared that the Congress should quit its "Zamindari culture" and work towards presenting senior leaders like Mamata Banerjee as the face of the alliance.

The Congress "Can't treat its partners as its subjects. To ensure that the INDIA bloc wins, it must make Mamata Banerjee, who is a three-time chief minister and three-time union minister, and other senior leaders the face of the INDIA bloc," said Trinamool spokesperson Kunal Ghosh.

Nobody Wants India To Become "Industry Of Renting Womb": Delhi High Court On Surrogacy

The Delhi High Court Friday said the law regulating the procedure of surrogacy is intended to curb the exploitation of surrogates and no one wants India to become an "industry of renting a womb".

The court made the observation while hearing a plea by an Indian-origin couple living in Canada challenging the March 14 notification issued by the Centre amending the Surrogacy (Regulation) Act to ban donor surrogacy by altering Form 2 under Rule 7 of the Surrogacy Rules, 2022.

"This reproductive outsourcing was supposed to be curbed by the legislature and that too at the instance of the Supreme Court and we cannot go beyond it," a bench of Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Mini Pushkarna said.

"This is a beneficial act and it is primarily intended to curb the exploitation of surrogates. India is still a developing country and it's not a fully developed country. Because of economic reasons many people may be swayed towards this and CII (Confederation of Indian Industry) in one of its reports is supposed to have stated that India at one point in time was a 2.3 billion dollar industry," the bench said. The counsel for the petitioners said they were Indian citizens and residing in Canada only for work purposes, responding to which the bench said they could undertake the surrogacy facility in that country itself.

"They are coming to India for a certain reason, because of the economic disparity over here that people can rent a womb. No one wants this country to become an industry of renting a womb. That's not the industry we want to promote. The legislature has taken a call on it," the bench said.

It further asked the petitioners what was the harm in going through this procedure in Canada and why they were coming to India for surrogacy when they were settled there.

To this, the petitioners' lawyer said their extended family is in India and that they have genuine medical issues.

As the bench said the availing of the facility has to go beyond commercialisation, the lawyer maintained that there was no commercial transaction being entered into by the couple for surrogacy.

However, Justice Manmohan responded, "Why will any third person do it? There does not stand any reason." The bench said the option of adopting a child is also available to people and if there are some good couples who are willing to adopt those kids their lives will be changed.

The lawyer, who agreed that adoption should be encouraged, however, added that in the case of adoption, there is no biological connection of the child with the couple.

To this, the court said, "...The mindset that adoption should not take place is very wrong. Adoption needs to be encouraged in a country like India." It said there is some intent behind it which is why the executive and legislature have restricted surrogacy and it cannot be said to be arbitrary or irrational or violative of fundamental rights.

"The fact that there is abuse by this industry is rampant and we have seen it. According to CII, it became a 2.3 billion dollar industry in India at one point in time..." "The same thing is with organ donation. If we allow organ donation in this country half of the poor people will lose their organs, that is why the state has prohibited it. You are not understanding the social dimension of it. You cannot see it only from the prism of your clients, you have to look at it from a larger perspective," the bench said.

The counsel representing the authorities told the court that as of now, no surrogacy procedure involving the couple has begun and that it was a premature petition.

The bench said the petition was filed at a premature stage as the procedure for surrogacy of the couple has still not begun.

The petitioners said they are Indian nationals who got legally married according to Hindu rites and ceremonies and are permanent residents of India. They added that they are a childless couple and have a medical condition that necessitated gestational surrogacy through which they intended to become parents.

It said the couple was granted a certificate of medical indication for surrogacy with a donor oocyte in December 2022, stating that they can undergo a surrogacy procedure as an advanced treatment for infertility.

However, on March 14, 2023, the Centre issued a notification amending the surrogacy regulations and banning donor surrogacy.

As the bench was not inclined to entertain the plea, the petitioner's lawyer later withdrew it with the liberty to file afresh in case the need arises.

12-Year-Old Babysitter In US Arrested After Attacking 3-Year-Old With Belt, Smashing Him Into Wall

A 3-year-old boy in the United States is fighting for his life after allegedly being beaten by his 12-year-old babysitter. According to Fox 59, Noah Brown is currently on life support in Indiana after being attacked with a belt and smashed into a wall. He is currently at the Riley Children's Hospital, where he has suffered multiple seizures as a result of the November 29 beatdown at his father's home in Indianapolis. In an online petition, Noah's mother Michelle Lane said that the babysitter was her ex-husband's stepson, who was supposed to care for the 3-year-old and his 5-year-old brother.

According to Fox 59, the 12-year-old, whose name hasn't been revealed, was arrested by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department over the incident. He has been charged with aggravated assault, two counts of serious bodily injury to a person under the age of 14 and possession of personal weapons.

Speaking to the outlet, Noah's family described the 3-year-old as a very active child. "He's energetic. He's a happy little three-year-old. He wouldn't harm nobody, and nothing keeps that kid down," the family said.

Further, revealing the horrifying details of the incident, Noah's grandmother Candy King said that the 12-year-old boy has anger issues, so when Noah started crying, the babysitter couldn't handle it. "He beat him with a belt and threw him towards the bed and his head hit the bed frame of the bunk bed," Ms King said. She further revealed that the 12-year-old also rammed Noah's head into a wall, following which he collapsed under the bed after trying to get away.

"He has had to be placed in life support and has had a part of his skull removed due to the intensity of his injuries," Noah's mother said in an online petition. "The 12-year-old boy told his biological father that my son was being 'annoying' while crying so he hit him with a belt, hit his head on the bunk bed frame and rammed him at a wall," she wrote.

Ms Lane stated that her 3-year-old suffered multiple seizures. "He has a long road to recovery. It's not guaranteed what his quality of life is going to be but we're praying and hoping for the best that he comes out just fine," she told the outlet. She also revealed that the little boy had Covid at the time of the attack which means that he has a really long road to recovery ahead of him.

"It's not guaranteed what his quality of life is going to be but we're praying and hoping for the best that he comes out just fine," the mother said.

Taylor Swift's Eras Tour Breaks World Record, Becomes Highest-Grossing Tour Ever

Taylor Swift has been making headlines ever since she began much-talked about Eras Tour. The tour is now officially the highest-grossing music tour ever, becoming the first to surpass $1 billion in revenue, as per the Guinness World Record .

Eras Tour began in March this year and is set to conclude in December 2024 after a total of 151 shows across the globe. According to Pollstar, the ongoing concert tour has earned $1.04 billion. This surpasses the record set by Elton John's farewell tour, which ran for five years and brought in $939 million across 328 performances before concluding earlier this year.

The "Lover" singer described her shows as a trip through all of her musical "eras," spanning more than 3.5 hours and consisting of a set list of 44 songs split into 10 segments. Swifties, her ardent fan following, have flocked in great numbers to see their idol, overwhelming websites with ticket sales, packing hotels to capacity, and even creating seismic activity similar to earthquakes during some of her gigs, as seen in July in Seattle. With an average attendance of 72,000 people and ticket prices of about $238, the tour is making over $17 million every performance.

Meanwhile, the US Federal Reserve report published in July also attributed Eras Tour due to its significant economic impact on the country. The US Federal Reserve recently in its Beige Book, or the Summary of Commentary on Current Economic Conditions which is published eight times a year stated that hotel bookings in Philadelphia had risen to their highest level since the beginning of the pandemic. The report attributed this growth to Ms Swift's concert dates in the city.

"Despite the slowing recovery in tourism in the region overall, one contact highlighted that May was the strongest month for hotel revenue in Philadelphia since the onset of the pandemic, in large part due to an influx of guests for the Taylor Swift concerts in the city," the report read at that time.

The Grammy Award winner was also named 'Person of the Year' by Time Magazine. They call the musical force of nature the "hero of her own story."Taylor Swift found a way to transcend borders and be a source of light... Swift is the rare person who is both the writer and hero of her own story," Time editor-in-chief Sam Jacobs wrote in a statement.

"Much of what Swift accomplished in 2023 exists beyond measurement. She mapped her journey and shared the results with the world: She committed to validating the dreams, feelings, and experiences of people, especially women, who felt overlooked and regularly underestimated."

Supreme Court Transfers Over 40 FIRs Linked To Bitcoin Scam To CBI

In a significant development, the Supreme Court Wednesday ordered transfer of over 40 FIRs related to the Bitcoin cryptocurrency scam to the CBI for further investigation and shifted the trial to a Delhi court.

Observing that the accused, who are on anticipatory bail, cannot be allowed to "stultify" the ongoing probe, the top court vacated its August 30, 2019 order granting them the relief of pre-arrest bail.

A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra said now the accused, if not granted regular bail by other courts, will have to seek the relief from the Delhi High Court.

It said the trial of cases wherein the FIRs have been registered will now be conducted at a special CBI court at Rouse Avenue in New Delhi.

The FIRs were lodged by several agencies, including the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate, besides the local police of Maharashtra, West Bengal, Delhi, Chandigarh, Punjab, Karnataka and Jammu and Kashmir.

Dismissing as many as 32 petitions filed by the accused, the bench said, "We are of the view that allegations levelled in the FIRs merit investigation. The exercise of jurisdiction under Art 32 is not warranted." "We are of the view that all the FIRs in question be transferred for further investigation to the CBI. The amount (of Rs 1 crore) deposited before this court pursuant to the interim order shall stand transferred to the special CBI Court at Rouse Avenue, New Delhi," the bench said.

Article 32 of the Constitution allows Indian citizens to seek constitutional remedy directly from the Supreme Court if they are deprived of their fundamental rights.

While taking back the relief of anticipatory bail granted earlier, the bench said, " We cannot allow you to stultify the investigation by not cooperating with the probe agency".

Senior advocate Siddharth Dave, appearing for the accused, said the legal status of Bitcoin is completely a "grey area" and the accused are made to run from one part of the country to another to face the probe agencies and courts.

Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, appearing for the ED, said she was not opposed to the transfer of the probe to the CBI and the trial to a single court in Delhi. "But the interim protection of anticipatory bail must go," the law officer said.

"We are not entertaining the petition under Article 32...We will permit the petitioners to surrender and apply for regular bail before an appropriate court," the CJI observed orally.

The court said the amount of Rs 1 crore deposited with the apex court registry by the accused as a precondition for grant of anticipatory bail will have to be transferred to the trial court in Delhi.

Earlier, the top court was irked over non-compliance of its prior order by Amit Bhardwaj, the key accused who later died. He had allegedly not shared his username/passwords with the Enforcement Directorate.

"Why have you not shared your username and password when it was recorded in our earlier order? We will dismiss your writ petition if there is non-compliance. The Supreme Court is not some district court, where you can play with the orders. You yourself had made the statement that you will share the username and passwords and now there is non-compliance. This is not a Tis Hazari Court," the bench had said.

On March 28 last year, the top court had asked Bharadwaj to disclose the username and password of his Bitcoin wallet to the ED and cooperate with the investigation in the money laundering case against him.

The top court was dealing with cases related to the quashing of multiple FIRs registered against Amit Bhardwaj and others for allegedly cheating investors across India by inducing them to trade in Bitcoin after promising them high returns.

The Enforcement Directorate had said around 47 FIRs were registered against the accused for allegedly duping people across the country. The cases involved trading of 87,000 Bitcoins worth Rs 20,000 crore.

Amit Bhardwaj, his two brothers and their father are accused in the case.

The allegation against Bhardwaj was that he along with other co-accused, who are mostly his family members, had induced unsuspecting people to invest in Bitcoin through a "multi-level marketing scheme" on the false promise of securing for them 10 per cent assured monthly returns for 18 months, a cumulative profit of 180 per cent.

It was alleged that due to the inducement, customers invested their Bitcoins in the scheme but did not get the assured returns.

The FIRs also said in order to escape inevitable punishment under the law, Bhardwaj and other accused collectively, in a dishonest manner, and with the deliberate intention of destroying the evidence, shut down the fake 'gainbitcoin' website through which investments were made.

12-Year-Old Girl Threatens Teacher With Knife During Class At French School

A 12-year-old schoolgirl threatened a teacher with a knife at a school in northern France on Wednesday, the latest in a growing number of incidents that have raised tensions in the French education system.

No-one was injured in the incident in the northwestern city of Rennes but prosecutors said that they have opened a criminal investigation.

"This morning, a pupil threatened a teacher with a knife during a lesson. The pupils, shocked, were immediately moved to safety," the local education authority said in a statement.

Born in 2011, the schoolgirl "came to class armed with a large knife with the apparent intention of killing her English teacher," said Rennes prosecutor Rennes Philippe Astruc.

"During the lesson, in class, she brandished the knife at the victim who fled running" before she was "disarmed by the staff of the establishment" of the Hautes Ourmes junior high school, he added.

There have been growing tensions in schools in France, which has large Muslim and Jewish communities, sometimes linked to the war between Israel and Palestinian Islamist group Hamas.

In October, a radicalised Islamist stabbed his former teacher Dominique Bernard to death in the northern town of Arras.

Earlier this week teachers at a school outside Paris refused to work after a group of pupils objected to the showing in class of a painting by Renaissance master Giuseppe Cesari containing several nude women.

Meanwhile, a French court last week convicted six teenagers for their role in the 2020 killing of teacher Samuel Paty outside his secondary school near Paris by a radicalised Islamist.

A "Russian Roulette": Israeli Hostage Recalls 52 Days In Hamas Captivity

Israeli Sharon Alony-Cunio survived 52 days as a hostage in Gaza with her two little girls before she was released in an Israel-Hamas swap deal. But she fears for the life of her husband who is still captive in the bombarded Palestinian enclave.

Now back home with her twin three-year-olds, Julie and Emma, she pleads for the remaining 137 hostages to be freed. "Every minute is critical. The conditions there are not good and the days go on for ever," she told Reuters in her first interview.

"It's a Russian roulette. You don't know whether tomorrow morning they'll keep you alive or kill you, just because they want to or just because their backs are against the wall," said Ms Alony-Cunio, 34.

Ms Alony-Cunio was one of 240 people taken hostage on Oct. 7 by Hamas gunmen who burst through the border with Israel and killed around 1,200 people.

The operatives who took over her kibbutz, Nir Oz, which lies a little over a mile from Gaza, set fire to her house and took her away at gunpoint after she climbed out the window.

She was taken across the border with her husband David and one of their twins, she said. Their second daughter was held separately in Gaza for 10 days before they were reunited in captivity with 12 other hostages under conditions she said were tough, particularly for children.

"Everyone gave up food for them (the girls). You don't know if in the evening there will be a pita (bread) so in the morning you save some for the evening. Everything is very calculated, a quarter of a pita, half a pita to keep for the next morning."

Sometimes they were fed dates and cheese and sometimes they would split meat rice and rations for six among the 12 of them.

Waiting to be allowed to go to the toilet was a problem for the girls, she said, so they had to use a sink and a rubbish bin. "Sometimes when there was a power cut, they let us open the door, they drew the curtain and then we would whisper. How do you keep a child together for 12 hours with whispers only?"

Her group of hostages was held above ground and moved a few times, she said, but with memories still raw and with her husband still inside, Ms Alony-Cunio was reluctant to give more details of her capture and time as a hostage.

But one of the biggest hardships, she said, was simply not knowing what was being done to get them out.

"Every day there is crying, frustration and anxiety. How long are we going to be here? Have they forgotten about us? Have they given up on us?"

A seven-day truce saw more than 100 hostages released. The rest are still being held incommunicado as Israel bombards Gaza vowing to take out Hamas. More than 18,000 people have been killed in Gaza, according to local health authorities.

Many families of the 137 hostages still in Gaza, whose names and photos on posters line the streets of Israel, are scared.

"My children are torn," Ms Alony-Cunio said. "I am torn without my second half, the love of my life, the father of my daughters who ask me every day, where is daddy?"

David was separated from them three days before their release on Nov. 27, before fighting resumed. Getting the remaining hostages out should be top priority, she said.

"I am petrified I will get bad news that he is no longer alive," Ms Alony-Cunio said.

"We are not just names on a poster. We are human beings, flesh and blood. The father of my girls is there, my partner, and many other fathers, children, mothers, brothers."

Court Allows AAP's Sanjay Singh To Appear Before Privileges Committee

A Delhi court on Monday allowed AAP's Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, arrested in a money laundering case related to alleged Delhi excise policy scam, to appear before a parliamentary committee to file his submissions in a breach of privilege case.

Special Judge M K Nagpal granted permission to Mr Singh on an application moved by his lawyer, who claimed that being a parliamentarian, the accused was required to attend the proceedings.

The judge directed the jail superintendent to take the accused to the Parliament on any working day when Parliament is in session to file his submissions before the Rajya Sabha's Privileges Committee.

The judge, however, said that Mr Singh will not be permitted to meet his colleagues, supporters and media persons.

The judge, meanwhile, adjourned the order on whether to take cognisance of a charge sheet against Mr Singh in the case, noting that the ED's application seeking protection of a witness is pending before another court.

The court is scheduled to hear on Tuesday the bail application of Mr Singh, who is currently in judicial custody. The ED had arrested Mr Singh on October 4.

The anti-money laundering agency has alleged that Mr Singh played a key role in the formulation and implementation of the now-scrapped excise policy, which benefited certain liquor manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers, for monetary considerations.

The senior AAP leader has refuted the allegations.

Mumbai's Air Quality Has Improved But Not Satisfactory: High Court

The air quality index (AQI) in Mumbai has improved but continues to be moderate and not satisfactory, the Bombay High Court said on Monday, while asking the Maharashtra government to come up with a comprehensive plan to find a final solution to the issue.

A division bench of Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice G S Kulkarni asked the government to take the issue seriously, as lakhs of people continue to suffer because of the air pollution in the city.

The court took note of a news report which stated that seven project sites - road concretisation at suburban Bandra and Khar, the bullet train site at BKC, Versova-Bandra sea link project, Mumbai Metro-III, Mumbai Coastal Road and the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link - were generating a lot of dust adding to the worsening air quality.

The court noted that large mounds of construction material and rubble are reportedly left open at these sites.

The bench directed the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) to conduct a joint inspection at these seven sites and immediately take requisite steps, pass orders and ensure that all the norms are followed.

"We also direct that in case the stakeholders at these sites are found to be not following or deviating from the norms, legal action may be taken by the MCGM and MPCB," the court said.

The court noted that the AQI in the city continues to be at moderate levels, which indicates that such air quality will continue to cause breathing problems for people with heart and lung ailments, children and older adults.

"The satisfactory level of AQI is 51 to 100. And therefore, a collective effort is required to be taken to bring the AQI to below 50 in the entire city," the court said.

"Anything beyond 50 is not good...it has to be brought down to below 50," it said.

The bench said a statutory body needs to be set up to address the issue regularly.

"We need to have a comprehensive plan for the entire city of Mumbai. Ultimately, you need to find a final solution or mechanism so that every six months we need not intervene," the court said, asking the government to at least start the process.

Advocate General Birendra Saraf, appearing for the government, said senior government officials were busy with the Nagpur winter assembly.

The bench then said the government should take this issue seriously.

"Are you wondering if there could be a situation more serious than this? Lakhs of people are suffering daily. Be serious now. Last eight to ten days, there is this fog.. but it is not fog," Justice Kulkarni said.

The court said the state government should consider framing some legislation mechanism along the lines of the central legislation - The Commission for Air Quality Management in National Capital Region and Adjoining Areas Act of 2021.

The court said Saraf would take up the matter with the government and some appropriate decision be taken.

The bench also directed the MPCB and the Central Pollution Control Board to file affidavits stating how air quality is measured and if the machines are adequate.

The court said the expert committee set up by it last month will continue to monitor the situation and submit its periodical reports.

The state government will consider the suggestions made by the committee and take an appropriate decision, it said.

The court was hearing a bunch of petitions along with one it had taken up on its own regarding the rising air pollution in the city.

The court said it would hear the matter further on February 6, 2024.

Congress MP's 2022 Post On Black Money Is Viral. Crores Seized From Him

A seemingly harmless 2022 post on X about rampant corruption and the extensive circulation of black money is being shared widely on social media and is now viral. In an ironic twist, the post was written by Congress Rajya Sabha MP Dheeraj Sahu - at the centre of a massive cash haul upwards of Rs 290 crore - last year.

Mr Sahu's post from August 12, 2022, read: "Even after demonetization, my heart is saddened to see so much black money and corruption in the country. I don't understand from where people are accumulating so much black money. If anyone can root out corruption from this country, it is only the Congress."

Sharing a screenshot of the post, BJP's IT Cell chief Amit Malviya wrote Mr Sahu has a "dark sense of humour" with the hashtag "corruption ki dukaan".

At least Rs 290 crore was seized in cash during raids on the offices of an Odisha-based distillery and entities linked to it in the state, Jharkhand, and Bengal. The distillery is linked to Dheeraj Sahu, officials said.

The Income Tax raids on the premises of Boudh Distilleries Private Limited entered its fifth day today. More cash counting machines were brought into the premises of Boudh Distilleries linked to Dheeraj Sahu today. Earlier, officials had swooped in on the MP's residences in Jharkhand.

Facing massive flak over the whopping amounts of hard cash recovered in what is touted as one of India's biggest cash hauls, the Congress on Saturday distanced itself from its MP and said that it is not connected with the businesses in any way and that the MP should explain the cash and its source.

The BJP launched an all-out attack on the Congress over the recovery, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading the party's charge against the Congress. On X, the PM wrote: "The people of the country should look atthese piles of currency notes and then listen to the honest 'speeches' of their leaders... Whatever has been looted from the public, every penny will have to be returned. This is Modi's guarantee."

Union Minister Smriti Irani questioned the Congress and said that the Gandhi family must reveal the name of the leader for whom the Rajya Sabha MP was working as an "ATM".

The BJP's Odisha unit has demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation and sought clarification from the ruling BJD. Party spokesperson Manoj Mohapatra showed photos of a woman minister from the state sharing stage with one of the liquor traders covered in the raids.

This tax evasion could not have been possible without the active support and patronage of local leaders and the state government, he said.

"Should Not View Each Other As Rivals": China's Xi Warns Top EU Officials

Chinese President Xi Jinping warned top EU officials on Thursday that China and Europe should not view each other as rivals or "engage in confrontation" due to their different political systems, in the first in-person China-EU summit for four years.

During a meeting to discuss issues ranging from trade imbalances to Ukraine, Xi also said China is willing to make the European Union a key economic and trade partner and to cooperate on science and technology, including artificial intelligence.

He urged the EU in the talks held at Beijing's Diaoyutai State Guesthouse to "eliminate all kinds of interference" in the bilateral relationship, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

Xi said both side needed to develop "a right perception" of each other, and encourage mutual understanding and trust.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President Charles Michel and EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell also met Chinese Premier Li Qiang during their one-day visit.

Li told the EU leaders that China opposes the "broad politicisation and securitisation" of economic and trade issues in violation of the basic norms of market economies, according to China's state television.

"We hope that the EU will be prudent when introducing restrictive economic and trade policies and when using trade remedy measures to keep its trade and investment markets open," he said.

Thursday's meetings were the EU officials' last chance to get face time with top Chinese officials before the European Parliament election kicks off next year, which will bring changes in the 27-nation bloc's leadership.

In another blow to EU-China relations, member state Italy officially informed China "in recent days" that it is leaving the Belt and Road Initiative championed by Xi, Italian government sources told Reuters on Wednesday.

A number of EU commissioners have visited Beijing since China lifted pandemic border restrictions this year, including the bloc's trade and climate chiefs. However, little progress has been made to resolve core irritants in the relationship.

Most recently, Borrell's chief of staff and senior EU diplomat Enrique Mora visited in November.

Issues

The EU wants Beijing to use its influence on Russia to stop the war in Ukraine, and a major focus of the trip was to urge Xi to stop Chinese private companies exporting European-made, dual-use items to Russia for its military campaign. Brussels initially left these Chinese firms off its latest Russia sanctions package unveiled last month, European officials said.

The bloc is also concerned about what it considers "imbalanced" economic relations, saying its near 400-billion-euro ($431.7 billion) trade deficit with China reflects restrictions on EU businesses operating there.

China has previously pushed back against an EU anti-subsidy investigation into Chinese electric vehicles and the EU's "de-risking" policy to reduce its reliance on Chinese imports, particularly of critical raw materials.

"The Chinese side believes that the investigation... seriously disrupts and distorts the global automotive industry chain... and will have a negative impact on China-EU economic and trade relations," He Yadong, a Chinese commerce ministry spokesperson, told a news conference on Thursday.

Last month, foreign minister Wang told visiting French counterpart Catherine Colonna that the biggest risk is "the uncertainty brought by broad politicisation", and that "the dependency most in need of reduction is protectionism".

During Colonna's visit, China also offered visa-free entry to citizens of the EU's five largest economies in a bid to boost post-pandemic tourism and improve China's image in the West, after relations deteriorated during the COVID pandemic.

EU officials say the two sides could cooperate more on action to combat climate change and to promote biodiversity.

The Climate Change We Have Caused Is Here For At Least 50,000 Years

In February 2000, Paul Crutzen rose to speak at the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme in Mexico. And when he spoke, people took notice. He was then one of the world's most cited scientists, a Nobel laureate working on huge-scale problems – the ozone hole, the effects of a nuclear winter.

So little wonder that a word he improvised took hold and spread widely: this was the Anthropocene, a proposed new geological epoch, representing an Earth transformed by the effects of industrialised humanity.

The idea of an entirely new and human-created geological epoch is a sobering scenario as context for the current UN climate summit, COP28. The impact of decisions made at these and other similar conferences will be felt not just beyond our own lives and those of our children, but perhaps beyond the life of human society as we know it.

The Anthropocene is now in wide currency, but when Crutzen first spoke this was still a novel suggestion. In support of his new brain-child, Crutzen cited many planetary symptoms: enormous deforestation, the mushrooming of dams across the world's large rivers, overfishing, a planet's nitrogen cycle overwhelmed by fertiliser use, the rapid rise in greenhouse gases.

As for climate change itself, well, the warning bells were ringing, certainly. Global mean surface temperatures had risen by about half a degree since the mid-20th century. But, they were still within the norm for an interglacial phase of the ice ages. Among many emerging problems, climate seemed one for the future.

A little more than two decades on, the future has arrived. By 2022, global temperature had climbed another half a degree, the past nine years being the hottest since records began. And 2023 has seen climate records being not just broken, but smashed.

By September there had already been 38 days when global average temperatures exceeded pre-industrial ones by 1.5°C, the safe limit of warming set by the UN Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in the Paris agreement. In previous years that was rare, and before 2000 this milestone had never been recorded.

With this leap in temperatures came record-breaking heatwaves, wildfires and floods, exacerbated by other local human actions. Climate has moved centre stage on an Anthropocene Earth.

Why this surge in temperatures? In part, it's been the inexorable rise in greenhouse gases, as fossil fuels continue to dominate human energy use. When Crutzen spoke in Mexico, atmospheric carbon dioxide levels were about 370 parts per million (ppm), already up from the pre-industrial 280 ppm. They're now around 420 ppm, and climbing by some 2 ppm per year.

In part, the warming results from cleaner skies in the past few years, both on land and at sea, thanks to new regulations phasing out old power stations and dirty sulphur-rich fuels. As the industrial haze clears, more of the sun's energy makes it through the atmosphere and onto land, and the full force of global warming kicks in.

In part, our planet's heat-reflecting mirrors are shrinking, as sea ice melts away, initially in the Arctic, and in the last two years, precipitously, around Antarctica too. And climate feedbacks seem to be taking effect, too. A new, sharp rise in atmospheric methane – a far more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide – since 2006 seems to be sourced from an increase in rotting vegetation in tropical wetlands in a warming world.

This latest warming step has already taken the Earth into levels of climate warmth not experienced for some 120,000 years, into those of the last interglacial phase, a little warmer than the current one. There is yet more warming in the pipeline over coming centuries, as various feedbacks take effect.

A recent study on the effects of this warming on Antarctica's ice suggests that “policymakers should be prepared for several metres of sea-level rise over the coming centuries” as the pulse of warmth spreads through the oceans to undermine the great polar ice-sheets.

This remains the case even in the most optimistic scenario where carbon dioxide emissions are reduced quickly. But emissions continue to rise steeply, to deepen the climate impact.

Controls have been overridden

To see how this might play out on a geological timescale, we need to look through the lens of the Anthropocene. A delicately balanced planetary machinery of regular, multi-millennial variations in the Earth's spin and orbit has tightly controlled patterns of warm and cold for millions of years.

Now, suddenly, this control machinery has been overridden by a trillion tons of carbon dioxide injected into the atmosphere in little more than a century.

Modelling the effects of this pulse through the Earth System shows that this new, suddenly disrupted, climate pattern is here for at least 50,000 years and probably far longer. It's a large part of the way our planet has changed fundamentally and irreversibly, to become comparable to some of the great climate change events in deep Earth history.

So will this particular COP meeting, with fossil fuel interests so strongly represented, make a difference? The bottom line is that attaining, and stabilising carbon emissions at “net zero” is only a crucial first step.

To retrieve the kind of climate optimal for humanity, and for life as a whole to thrive, negative emissions are needed, to take carbon out of the atmosphere and ocean system and put it back underground. For future generations, there is much at stake.

Adani Group Stocks End Up To 20% Higher, 3 Firms Hit 52-Week High

Adani Group shares extended their gains and ended up to 20 per cent higher on Wednesday after billionaire Gautam Adani-led conglomerate said it has plans to invest USD 75 billion on energy transition initiatives by 2030.

Eight of the group firms ended in the green territory, and three in the red.

During the day, some of the group firms also hit their 52-week highs and locked in upper-circuit levels, with the total valuation of group companies reaching near the Rs 15 lakh crore-mark at close.

On the BSE, Adani Total Gas zoomed 19.98 per cent to close at Rs 1,053.65 apiece, Adani Green Energy rallied 16.11 per cent at Rs 1,565.10, Adani Energy Solutions bounced 7.36 per cent to Rs 1,162.30, and NDTV advanced 7.07 per cent to settle at Rs 285.40.

Sanghi Industries shares jumped 4.97 per cent to end at Rs 136.35, Adani Wilmar climbed 4.11 per cent to Rs 396.35, Adani Power gained 4.09 per cent to Rs 560.55, and Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) rose 0.67 per cent to Rs 1,018.65 apiece.

During the day, scrip of Sanghi Industries, Adani Power and APSEZ also hit their 52-week highs on the bourse.

However, stock of ACC declined 2.59 per cent to finish at Rs 2,128.35 apiece, flagship firm Adani Enterprises fell 2.53 per cent to end at Rs 2,885.20, and Ambuja Cements down by 1.48 per cent to close at Rs 501.15 per share on the BSE.

The combined market valuation of all the 11 firms soared to Rs 14.54 lakh crore at close on Wednesday.

It stood at around Rs 13.91 lakh crore at the close of trading on Tuesday. Thus, the combined market valuation of all the 11 firms, including Sanghi Industries went up by about Rs 63,769 crore on Wednesday.

This was the first time that the group stocks hit nearly Rs 15 lakh crore-mark after facing a rout early this year following a report by US short-seller Hindenburg Research that alleged financial wrongdoing and stock manipulation by the conglomerate.

However, the company denied all allegations.

Adani Group has plans to invest USD 75 billion on energy transition initiatives by 2030, its Chairman Gautam Adani said on Wednesday.

The investments will boost the group's vision to have 45 gigawatt of renewable energy capacity by 2030, he said.

The investments will be executed through Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL).

On Tuesday, all 11 Adani Group shares continued their upward movement after a report stated that US agency IDFC had found Hindenburg Research's allegations of fraud against billionaire Gautam Adani-led conglomerate were "not relevant".

Ambuja Cements Ltd on Tuesday said it had completed the acquisition of Sanghi Industries Ltd (SIL), while another group firm Adani Green Energy announced it has secured funding of USD 1.36 billion from a consortium of international banks as part of its construction financing framework.

Stock prices of Adani group companies have been on the rise since last week after the Supreme Court on November 24 reserved its verdict on a batch of petitions seeking examination of allegations of fraud by US-based short seller Hindenburg Research against the conglomerate.
