"Political Chameleon": Karnataka's HD Kumaraswamy's Swipe At Amit Shah

JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy on Saturday called BJP a party full of "hypocrisies and lies" and Union Home Minister Amit Shah "a political chameleon" and "reincarnation" of Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels.

The former Chief Minister through a series of tweets has reacted to the saffron party leader's attack against JD(S).

"The fact that BJP-Bari Bootatike Party (a party full of hypocrisies) is a party of liars was made evident by your yapping lies. @AmitShah You are a political chameleon! This is the true face of your party. You're a reincarnation of Joseph Goebbels. You're disgraceful," Kumaraswamy said.

Pointing at Shah's allegation that Karnataka will become the ATM of the JD(S) party if it wins, he said if the regional party forms the government, it will become the ATM of the crores of Kannadigas, farmers, labourers, the oppressed, and the disabled.

"JD(S) is the people's ATM. ATM means Any Time Manushyatva (Humanity) to us. To you, it means Any Time Mosa (Cheating). You've forced the nation into the path of destruction through your lies. Let's set the matter of the nation aside..." he added.

Hitting the ground running in poll-bound Karnataka, Shah on Friday had called Congress and JD(S) "parivaarvadi" (dynastic politics) and "corrupt", and had urged the people of Mandya and Old Mysuru region to support the BJP in forming a government with majority in the State.

Hitting back at allegations of corruption, Kumaraswamy said: "Karnataka BJP government is not a 40 per cent government, but a 55-60 per cent government! Isn't Karnataka an ATM of your party? You must definitely know this. Why hide the truth? Realize that your bravado will not work in front of the Mandya people, Shah." Responding to Shah's attack on the JD(S) for 'parivarvaad' (dynasty politics), Kumaraswamy referred to BCCI secretary Jay Shah without naming him.

"Aren't you aware of the extent of family politics in your party? Is your son any cricket pundit? Why is he a part of BCCI? Does your son's position satisfy the guidelines laid by the Supreme Court? Now, tell me whose ATM is BCCI?" he asked.

Covid Deaths Hit 9,000 Per Day In China, Finds UK-Based Firm: Report

Deaths attributed to Covid in China have increased to 9,000 people per day, according to a data firm, reported news.com.au, an Australia-based publication.

The news.com.au report also says, "British-based research firm Airfinity has doubled the number of people it estimates are dying from Covid in China as the number of infections soar. It comes after Beijing lifted draconian zero-Covid health measures in November that had been in place for years."

Protests erupted across China due to the harsh lockdowns after 10 people died in an apartment fire. There were allegations that firefighters were stopped from coming inside the apartment block due to the quarantine orders.

The country reversed its Covid policy due to widespread protests in its nine cities.

"Airfinity said its model was based on data from China's regional provinces before changes to reporting infections were implemented, combined with case growth rates from other former zero-Covid countries when they lifted restrictions," the report said.

The total number of deaths in China linked to Covid in December may hit 100,000, with at least 18.6 million cases. By mid-January, there could be as many as 3.7 million COVID cases in a day. By January 23, a total of 584,000 deaths are expected in China.

According to news.com.au, "Beijing has been accused of withholding health information so it's hard to accurately assess the numbers. However, China's National Health Commission (NHC) last week confirmed that the country's current outbreak is the largest the world has ever seen."

"More than a billion Chinese could be infected with Covid by March. And more than 30 per cent of the population may have already been infected, that is up to 400 million people," according to a The Australian report.

The virus is continuing to spread rapidly in China. Workers, however, are being called to go to work unless they have extreme symptoms.

Since China relaxed its controversial zero-Covid policy last month, the second-largest economy is struggling to deal with the meteoric rise in coronavirus cases throughout the country which is putting a burden on its healthcare system.

British virologist and biologist Jonathan Latham, Executive Director of the Bioscience Resource Project, said that Beijing is not being open and transparent about case numbers or deaths and that only accurate data can lead to good decisions in China and elsewhere.

"China is not being open and transparent about case numbers or deaths. This is true for many countries though. It would be great to have truly accurate information on those points, however, since only timely and accurate data can lead to good decisions in China and elsewhere. Good data would also test the theory that newer variants such as Omicron have a lower inherent death rate," Latham told ANI.

Up To 70% Of Those Under 19 Globally Susceptible To Covid: Study

Fifty to 70 per cent "children" below 19 years globally were susceptible to the SARS-CoV-2 infection by the end of 2021 and before the Omicron wave, showing a need for more effective vaccines and better vaccination coverage, according to a study.

It also found that worldwide seroprevalence estimates varied from 7.3 per cent in the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic to 37.6 per cent in the fifth wave and 56.6 per cent in the sixth wave.

The highest seroprevalences in different pandemic waves were estimated for South-East Asia -- 17.9 to 81.8 per cent -- and the African region -- 17.2 to 66.1 per cent -- while the lowest seroprevalence was estimated for the Western Pacific region between 0.01 and 1.01 per cent, the study said.

Seroprevalence estimates were higher in children at older ages, in those living in underprivileged countries or regions, and in those of minority ethnic backgrounds, the study published in eClinicalMedicine said.

Seroprevalence was defined as the number of children who tested positive for specific anti-SARS-CoV-2 serum antibodies, using a well-designated threshold in the assay, divided by the total number of children tested, it said.

Scientists conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis in which they searched international and pre-printed scientific databases from December 1, 2019, to July 10, 2022, said the study, conducted to assess SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence and determinants in children worldwide.

They searched databases such as PubMed, Embase, Web of Science Core Collection, and Scopus and preprint repositories such as MedRxiv, BioRxiv and SSRN for articles.

The higher hospitalisation rates of those aged zero to 19 years, referred to as "children" by the study, observed since the emergence of the immune-evasive Omicron variant and sub-variants along with the persisting vaccination disparities, highlighted a need for in-depth knowledge of SARS-CoV-2 sero-epidemiology in children, scientists involved in the study said.

Pooled seroprevalences were estimated according to World Health Organization (WHO) regions using random-effects meta-analyses, the study said.

"Findings indicate that, by the end of 2021 and before the Omicron wave, around 50-70 per cent of children globally were still susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection, clearly emphasising the need for more effective vaccines and better vaccination coverage among children and adolescents, particularly in developing countries and minority ethnic groups," it said.

The study said associations with SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence and sources of heterogeneity were investigated using sub-group and meta-regression analyses. The protocol used in this study has been registered in PROSPERO (CRD42022350833).

The study included 247 publications containing 302 datasets involving 7,57,075 children from 70 countries in six WHO-defined regions. Most of the datasets, 144, were from Europe, and the least, 14, were from the Western Pacific region, the study said.

The rapid transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant has led to unprecedented COVID-19 cases and hospitalisation, especially among children.

The lower risk of disease in children "pre-Omicron", combined with concerns about vaccine safety and parental hesitancy, led to limited vaccine uptake and slow implementation of vaccination in children globally, particularly for children under 12 years of age.

Vaccines for children were also largely inaccessible in many parts of the world that were lagging behind in the vaccination of adults, particularly in low and middle-income countries. To date, children remain the largest unvaccinated group worldwide, the study noted.

With the emergence of Omicron, an increasing number of children requiring critical care have been observed in developed countries such as the US, England and Germany, with sufficient vaccine supplies, it said.

There is evidence that available vaccines do not protect children adequately against SARS-CoV-2 Omicron infection and the waning of both natural infection and vaccine protection are well documented.

The scientists said against this background and the race for the development of a new generation of vaccines that protect against a wide range of variants, including new ones, "we aimed to provide estimates for the proportion of children with detectable antibodies and to identify sources of heterogeneity in SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence in children for various regions of the world".
