Father, Domestic Help Physically Abuse Adopted Child In Assam, Arrested

A doctor and his family's domestic help were arrested in Guwahati on Saturday for allegedly physically abusing his adopted daughter, police said.

The arrests were made after photographs of the four-year-old girl tied to a pole on the terrace of their apartment went viral on social media on Friday.

The doctor's wife, also a medical practitioner, has not appeared before the police so far. She instead made a video and uploaded it on social media, claiming that a conspiracy was hatched to "defame and destroy" her family.

The Assam Commission for Protection of Child Rights (ASCPCR) has taken cognizance of the matter and written to the civil and police administration to initiate enquiry and take action against the accused.

The girl has been taken by authorities for medical examination.

"After receiving information about the girl being tied to a pole, a team from Paltan Bazar police station went to their apartment and picked up the girl's father and their domestic help on Friday evening. They were arrested on Sunday while the girl's mother has still not appeared before us," a police officer said.

He said the details of the adoption are also being looked into.

ASCPCR chairperson Sunita Changkakoti said the Commission has taken note of the matter and she has written to the Guwahati police commissioner and the Kamrup (Metro) deputy commissioner on Friday evening, seeking details about the incident.

She said the previous wife of the accused doctor had brought similar charges against him of abusing their child a few years back.

"We had looked into the matter but he had managed to evade punishment. We had set some guidelines for him to abide by, but he had failed to adhere to those too. We are looking into the current matter as well," Changkakoti added.

Meanwhile, the arrested doctor's wife, in a video uploaded on social media on Friday night, claimed a conspiracy was hatched to "defame and destroy" her family.

She maintained that the children's caretakers or other people employed by the family may have conspired with others and are framing the parents.

The couple has a total of three children, all adopted, including the allegedly abused girl and her twin brothers.

Man Arrested In Canada For Opening Store To Sell Hard Drugs

A 51-year-old Canadian man was arrested in British Columbia for opening a mobile shop to sell cocaine, heroin and other dangerous substances. According to the BBC, the man identified as Jerry Martin was arrested on Thursday, a day after he opened his store. Vancouver police said that it arrested Mr Martin for "drug trafficking in connection with an illicit drug dispensary" but have not laid formal charges.

As per the outlet, Mr Martin started selling the drugs on Wednesday out of a mobile trailer parked in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. His store offered adults the opportunity to purchase illegal drugs by showing their ID cards.

Mr Martin said he opened his mobile shop to offer a safe supply of drugs in the neighbourhood that has been destroyed by the "overdose epidemic". He also added that his drugs were all tested to ensure they did not contain fentanyl - the synthetic opioid 50 times stronger than heroin which contributes to a majority of overdose deaths. He revealed that he planned to sell batches of cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and crack in small quantities, up to 2.5 grams, in an attempt to prevent further deaths.

Further, according to the outlet, the 51-year-old said that he had planned to open his store after Health Canada decriminalised the possession of small quantities of hard drugs in the province of British Columbia (BC) early this year as part of a three-year pilot project. He also added that he plans to challenge his arrest in court, arguing contaminated drug supplies cause harm.

Separately, in a statement, Constable Tania Visintin said Vancouver police "support measures aimed at improving public safety for people who use drugs, including harm reduction services and decriminalisation" but said police would continue enforcement on drug trafficking.

Currently, Mr Martin is out of police custody pending a court hearing, police said. He has also been asked to stay away from Vancouver's Downtown Eastside.

Iron Net, Painkillers: How Delhi Jail Inmates Planned To Attack Gangster

The attackers of dreaded gangster Tillu Tajpuriya in Delhi's Tihar jail fashioned knives out of an exhaust fan, used bedsheets to climb down a floor and barged into his cell to beat him to death, police sources have told NDTV.

Tillu Tajpuriya, accused of killing another gangster inside a Delhi court in 2021, was stabbed to death inside the high-security prison on Tuesday.

The police say Tajpuriya was killed by the men of rival gangster Jitender Gogi, who was shot dead inside a court in 2021. To avenge their leader's death, the Gogi gang members allegedly plotted Tajpuriya's killing.

Tajpuriya was stabbed on his head, back, shoulders and neck. Video footage shows him trying to shield his face but his attackers overpower him and drag him out of his cell. The gangster's body had close to 100 injury marks.

The gangster was lodged on the ground floor of the high risk ward, while his attackers were on the first floor. An iron net was the separator between the two. Sources say the attackers, over a period of days, managed to cut the iron net by drilling holes in the walls and pouring water in it. On the day of the attack, they used bedsheets to climb down a floor and barged into his cell breaking down the iron net.

The attackers also dismantled an exhaust fan, separating its iron parts to fashion knives out of it. Over the next few days, they sharpened the knives and waited for the day of attack.

A day before the attack, the men stayed up all night, said sources. They had also consumed painkillers to lessen the pain of beating when they are caught by the cops, sources said.

Tajpuriya's killing marked the second case of violence and gang rivalry in Tihar jail in a month.

Last month, Prince Tewatia, a close aide of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, was killed in Tihar jail by rival gang members. Bishnoi is an accused in the murder of singer Sidhu Moose Wala.
