NEET Aspirant, 15, Who Went To Kota 1 Month Ago, Dies By Suicide
A 15-year-old NEET aspirant from UP was found hanging from the ceiling fan in his hostel room in Kota Thursday, police said, in the second suspected suicide case in four days in the coaching hub.
Dhanesh Kumar Sharma, a resident of Khurja town in Bulandshahr district, was found dead by his hostel warden in Landmark City in Kunhari area. The Class 11 student had come to Kota only a month ago and was preparing for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG) at a coaching centre, police said.
Kunhari SHO Ganga Sahay Sharma said the student had his dinner and retired to his room no. 110 on Wednesday night. His parents got worried when he did not respond to their repeated phone calls.
They asked a boy, who hailed from their town and resided in Kota, to check on their son. The boy and the hostel warden broke into Dhanesh Sharma's room on Thursday morning and found him hanging from the ceiling fan hook, the SHO said.
"Prima facie, homesickness and stress from studies appear to be the reasons behind the extreme step. However, no suicide note has been recovered from his room and the actual reason behind his death will be ascertained," Circle Officer DSP Shankar Lal said.
The body is at a mortuary and will be sent for a post-mortem examination after his parents arrive, Lal added.
On Monday, Mohammed Nasid, 22, who hailed from Bengaluru, died allegedly by jumping from the tenth floor of a multi-storey building after appearing for the NEET-UG exam this year.
At least seven students studying in various coaching centres in Kota have died allegedly by suicide so far this year. Besides, a student who attempted self-immolation was rescued.
Last year, 15 coaching students died by suicide in the coaching hub.
More than 2.25 lakh students are estimated to be taking classes in various coaching centres in the city this academic session to crack entrance exams of medical and engineering colleges.

IT Ministry To Send Notice To WhatsApp Over International Spam Calls
The IT Ministry will send a notice to WhatsApp on the issue of spam calls from unknown international numbers, Minister of State for IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar said today, asserting that the onus of ensuring user safety lies with the digital platforms.
The digital platforms are responsible and accountable for ensuring the safety of 'digital nagriks', the minister said, adding that the government will respond to every instance of alleged misuse or alleged breach of users' privacy.
The minister's comments assume significance as WhatsApp users in India have reported a massive surge in incoming international spam calls over the past few days. Many users complained on Twitter that a major chunk of these spam calls had country codes belonging to Indonesia (+62), Vietnam (+84), Malaysia (+60), Kenya (+254) and Ethiopia (+251).
Mr Chandrasekhar on Tuesday said the ministry is taking note of the matter and will send a notice to WhatsApp on the issue.
"The Ministry is taking note of it, they will send them a notice," he told reporters on the sidelines of an event organised by the Public Affairs Forum of India (PAFI).
He also said that the government is mulling guidelines on what should be permissions for preloaded apps. The minister made it clear that the platforms are responsible for ensuring the safety and trust of users.
"I have said repeatedly that openness trust, safety and accountability are the responsibility of platforms who deliver to digital nagriks," the minister noted.
If there is an issue of spam, it is certainly an issue WhatsApp should look at or any messenger platform should look at, he added.
"Government will respond to every alleged misuse or alleged breach of privacy," he said.
One of the problems being examined at this point is also how these numbers are accessed by scammers.
"How are they able to identify which numbers are on WhatsApp...are they doing it blindly...is it some database they have got? If there is a database it is a violation of privacy, or if not are they are doing it through a bot... sending messages to random numbers... But that is certainly something platforms will be asked to look at," he said.
Chandrasekhar tweeted on Wednesday that the government will investigate a claim that WhatsApp accessed the microphone of smartphone users while the phone was not in use.
In a tweet, the minister had said the government will examine the alleged breach of privacy even as the new Digital Personal Data Protection Bill was being readied.
This followed a claim that WhatsApp accessed a user's microphone while he was sleeping.
WhatsApp responded saying it has been in touch with the Twitter engineer over the last 24 hours, who posted an issue with his Pixel phone and WhatsApp.
"We believe this is a bug on Android that misattributes information in their Privacy Dashboard and have asked Google to investigate and remediate," WhatsApp said in a tweet.
The company also claimed that users have full control over their mic settings.
To a question on some online gaming platforms opposing any idea of the self-regulatory organisation (SRO) backed by the association IAMAI, the minister said it has already been clarified during the consultation process that no existing industry organisation can be an SRO.
"SRO has to be notified by the Ministry, which means SRO has to be approved by the Ministry as meeting criteria laid down in online gaming rules. There will be SRO that will be formed...100 will apply, and three will be selected based on who is most transparent, inclusive and who represents most stakeholders and who is more credible," the minister said.
On the draft digital personal data protection Bill, Mr Chandrasekhar said he is hopeful that it will be introduced in the coming session of Parliament.

US Family Sues McDonalds, Claims Nuggets Left 4-Year-Old Daughter With Second-Degree Burns
A family in the United States has sued fast food giant Mcdonald's after their four-year-old daughter suffered second-degree burns from a "dangerously hot" Chicken McNuggets, as per a report in the South China Morning Post. In her lawsuit, Philana Holmes claims that she visited a McDonald's in Florida, with her daughter in 2019 and ordered a six-piece Happy Meal with milk and a Lion King toy.
However, the toddler suffered second-degree burns to her thigh area after a 200-degree Fahrenheit McNugget fell in her lap from a Happy Meal box. "The Chicken McNuggets inside of that Happy Meal were unreasonably and dangerously hot and caused (the victim's) skin and flesh around her thighs to burn," the lawsuit stated, as per the outlet. The food item was on her thighs for nearly two minutes.
According to NBC News, Ms Holmes gave her daughter the snack in the back seat before she started driving. Soon after, she heard a scream as a piece of her daughter's food became stuck between her thigh and the seatbelt for almost two minutes, causing burns that left her kid "disfigured and scarred." However, McDonald's and Upchurch Foods denied any wrongdoing.
The company issued a statement explaining that heated temperatures are necessary to guarantee that the food is thoroughly cooked and safe to consume. McDonald's said in its statement on Monday, "We take every complaint seriously and certainly those that involve the safety of our food and the experiences of our guests. This matter was looked into thoroughly. Ensuring a high standard for food safety and quality means following strict policies and procedures for each product we cook and serve. Those policies and procedures were followed in this case and we therefore respectfully disagree with the plaintiff's claims."
The first phase of the trial, which was divided into two halves by Broward Circuit Judge David Haimes, will address whether McDonald's is to blame for the burn. If the fast-food chain loses, damages will be decided at a subsequent trial, as per SCMP.
Furthermore, on Monday, McDonald's attorneys stated their intention to make the case that the burn was at least partially brought on by the time the nugget was in touch with the victim's skin. The nuggets, according to Ms Holmes' attorneys, were hotter than 200 degrees Fahrenheit.

"Record" 73.19% Voter Turnout In 2023 Karnataka Assembly Elections
Karnataka registered a voter turnout of 73.19 per cent in the Assembly polls which election officials on Thursday termed a record, while sharing the final figures.
Voting took place on Wednesday to elect representatives to the 224-member House.
"Karnataka has created a new record for itself. Final voter turnout for Karnataka Election 2023 stands at 73.19 per cent," said the Chief Electoral Office, Karnataka.
While Chikkaballapura district recorded the highest voter turnout of 85.56 per cent, followed by Bengaluru Rural at 85.08 per cent; the lowest was in Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) South limits (parts of Bengaluru city) at 52.33 per cent, the official data showed.
"Largely peaceful voting in all 224 Assembly constituencies in Karnataka, and no repoll indicated in any of the 58,545 polling stations," the Election Commission (EC) said on Wednesday night.
Karnataka recorded 72.44 per cent voter turnout in the 2018 Assembly polls which had thrown up a hung assembly with the BJP emerging as the single largest party tallying 104 seats, falling short of getting a majority. The turnout in 2013 polls was 71.83 per cent.
Counting of votes will take place on May 13.
Several pollsters have predicted that the Congress may have an edge in Karnataka, which is BJP's southern citadel, in a hung assembly with a couple of them even projecting that the grand old party may get a majority on its own.
While the BJP, riding on the PM Modi juggernaut, is looking to break a 38-year-old poll jinx where the state has never voted the incumbent party to power since 1985, the Congress is hoping for a morale booster victory to give it much-needed momentum to position itself as the main opposition player in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
It remains unclear whether former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda-led Janata Dal (Secular) will emerge as a "kingmaker" or a "king" by holding the key to government formation, in the event of a fractured mandate, as it has done in the past.
