Saudi Arabia's Embassy In Iran Resumes Work After 7 Years: Report

Saudi Arabia's embassy in Tehran has resumed operations, state media in Iran reported Wednesday, following a thaw in ties seven years after the mission was closed.

Shiite-dominated Iran and Sunni Muslim Saudi Arabia agreed to resume diplomatic relations and reopen their respective embassies following a China-brokered deal announced in March.

The long-time regional rivals severed ties in 2016 after Saudi diplomatic missions in Iran were attacked during protests over Riyadh's execution of Shiite cleric Nimr al-Nimr.

"The embassy of Saudi Arabia in the Islamic Republic of Iran has officially commenced its activities" and has been operating since Sunday, the official news agency IRNA said, quoting an "informed source" at Iran's foreign ministry.

There has been no official confirmation from Riyadh on the move.

In June, Iran marked the reopening of its embassy in Riyadh with a flag-raising ceremony.

Iranian media had previously attributed the delay in reopening the Saudi embassy to the poor condition of the building which was damaged during the 2016 protests.

The reports said Saudi diplomats would work from a luxury hotel in the Iranian capital pending the completion of the works.

Since the March deal, Saudi Arabia has restored ties with Iranian ally Syria and ramped up a push for peace in Yemen, where it has for years led a military coalition against the Iran-backed Huthi forces.

Iran and Saudi Arabia have backed opposing sides in conflict zones across the Middle East for years.

Iran has in recent months been at odds with Saudi Arabia and Kuwait over the ownership of a disputed gas field.

Saudi Arabia and Kuwait claim "sole ownership" to the field, with Iran warning it would "pursue its right" to the offshore zone if negotiations fail.

"PM Modi A Big Influence On My Life": Grammy Winner Ricky Kej

Three-time Grammy-award-winning musician Ricky Kej, who is all set to come up with his own interpretation of the Indian National Anthem along with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra on the eve of Independence Day, spoke about how Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been a 'big influence' on his music career.

Speaking to ANI on Wednesday, Ricky Kej said, "When I first met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015, he at that time encouraged me to make music around social service, the environment. So, that was very strong advice. Whatever music I compose till now is only for social impact and environment. So, he is a very, very big influence on my life."

This is not the first time Ricky Kej has talked about PM Modi. Earlier, after he won his career's third Grammy award, he shared how Modi has been supportive of his music.

Ricky Kej told ANI, "PM Modi has been supportive of my music. When I won my first Grammy award in 2015, he called me for a meeting and both of us discussed the environment for almost an hour and made an album together, 'Shanti Samsara'. He launched that album in a climate change conference in Paris. When I won my second Grammy last year in April, we met again. It was a beautiful meeting. He was very happy that I got successful again. So I have performed for him at India Gate in Delhi and now it's going to be my opportunity to perform in Mumbai."

To commemorate Indian Independence Day 2023, the Indian music composer will conduct the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (a massive 100-member British Orchestra) performing the Indian National Anthem. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is recognized as Britain's most in-demand orchestra.

He said, "The National Anthem is very important for me. When I was a child, before learning nursery rhymes and lullabies, my first song that I learnt was the national anthem. So, the national anthem is in my veins. I have collaborated with Royal Philharmonic Orchestra many times. Then, I thought why not make Royal Philharmonic Orchestra perform the National Anthem. I asked them and then we created a 100-member orchestra. It is the largest symphony orchestra to ever record the Indian National Anthem. We have recorded this in legendary Abbey Road Studios, London. Since Britain ruled us for more than a century, so this is a gift from them in the form of National Anthem we can all be proud of."

Ricky Kej, widely acclaimed as the 'Pride of India', will release this 60-second video on the eve of Independence Day (14th of August at 5pm) as a gift to every Indian everywhere in the world.

State Not Imposing Bengali Language On Students: Mamata Banerjee

Rubbishing opposition claims that the state government is trying to impose Bengali on students, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said a student is free to choose the first language and the state will not interfere in it.

She said the state cabinet on Monday decided on the three-language formula and asserted there was no move to make Bengali compulsory.

"Some people are spreading incorrect information about the language. We decided on the three-language formula at the cabinet meeting. Those who are studying in Bengali-medium schools will have Bengali as their first language. For the other two languages, they can choose between English, Hindi, Nepali, Gurmukhi, Alchiki, among others," Ms Banerjee said while speaking at a programme here.

"Those who are studying in Alchiki schools will have their mother tongue as the first language from primary class. For higher classes, they can opt for two more languages which could be Bengali, Hindi and English," she explained.

"In Darjeeling, they have Nepali-medium schools where they will study in Nepali. In higher classes, they can opt for English, Bengali or Hindi as optional subjects. In Rajbongshi schools, Rajbongshi will be the first language. They can select Bengali, English or Hindi as optional subjects. So, it is incorrect to say that we are imposing Bengali language on people," she added.

"We live in Bengal where majority of the schools are Bengali medium. There are English-medium schools as well. Those who talk in Bengali will take Bengali as their first language and then add two languages such as English, Nepali, Urdu, Alchiki, among others," she added.

The West Bengal government's new education policy mandates that students will have to learn three languages in classes 5-8, with Bengali as a priority language.

Two languages will be taught at the primary level - of which one will be the mother tongue.

Students of classes 5 to 8 will have to learn three languages out of which the third one could be a regional one or a foreign language.

Delhi Court Acquits Man Of Rape, Says Complainant Is His Wife

Underlining that "a perfectly legally valid marriage" comes into being upon the completion of 'saat phere', a court in Delhi has acquitted a man of the charge of rape on the ground that the prosecutor was his legally-wedded wife.

Section 7 of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1956, which describes the ceremonies for a Hindu wedding, says the marriage becomes complete and binding after the bride and groom jointly take the seventh step before the sacred fire.

Additional Sessions Judge Jagmohan Singh was hearing a case against the accused charged under sections 376 (rape) 493 (cohabitation caused by a man deceitfully inducing a belief of lawful marriage), 420 (cheating) and 380 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code.

"The offence of rape is not made out in the present case as the accused and the prosecutrix were lawfully married," the court said in a recent judgment.

It noted the prosecutrix's statement that her marriage was solemnised with the accused on July 21, 2014, at a temple after taking seven rounds ('saat phere') around the ceremonial fire in the presence of a priest.

"As both the prosecutrix and the accused belonged to the Hindu religion and as they had performed the Saptpadi ceremony at the time of their marriage, a legally valid marriage came into being between them as soon as the seventh round/step around the holy fire was completed," the court said.

Regarding the female prosecutor's grievance that a marriage certificate was not provided as the accused failed to provide his identity proof, the court said she was carrying a "mistaken impression" that the marriage was invalid unless a certificate was issued by the temple authorities.

It said, "In the present case, as the Saptpadi ceremony was complete, non-issuance of so-called marriage registration certificate by the temple authorities was of no legal consequence." "(So) charge under Section 493 of the also does not sustain against the accused," the court added.

It also acquitted the accused from the charges of cheating and theft, noting the vague nature of the prosecutrix's statements and the absence of corroborating evidence.

"The prosecution has failed to prove any of the charges against the accused beyond a reasonable doubt. Accordingly, the accused is hereby acquitted of all the charged offences," the court said.

The South Rohini police station registered an FIR against the accused in 2015. Charges were framed against him in July 2016.
