"Our Information On Ground...": Basavaraj Bommai's Take On Exit Polls

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has expressed confidence the ruling BJP will retain power with an absolute majority, dismissing exit poll predictions that indicated a close race between the Congress and the BJP, with the regional Janata Dal (Secular), or JD(S), possibly getting to play kingmaker in the event of a hung house.

Most of the exit polls, however, gave a slight edge to the Congress.

"Our information on the ground is very clear. We will get hundred percent majority, comfortable majority," Mr Bommai told reporters today after voting ended in Karnataka. The voter turnout was 66 per cent, a high figure compared to past trends.

"Exit polls are exit polls. They cannot be hundred percent correct. There will be plus or minus 5 per cent in all exit polls. That can change the whole scenario," Mr Bommai said.

On a question whether the Congress will benefit from high voter turnout, Mr Bommai said it is the other way round.

"Always, if you go by the track record, the more number of voters turn up, it is always better for the BJP, not the Congress. This shows that many people who otherwise do not vote, especially in urban areas, have come and voted. That is a positive sign for the BJP," he told reporters.

He denied speculation of backchannel talks with the JD(S) in case of a hung house. "There is no question of hung (assembly). We will get absolute majority," Mr Bommai said, adding any talk about "resort politics" is a "figment of your imagination."

The India Today-Axis My India exit poll predicted a clear majority for the Congress with 122-140 seats in the 224-member assembly, and gave the BJP 62-80 seats.

News 24-Today's Chanakya forecast a majority for the Congress with 120 seats as against 92 for the BJP and 12 for the JD(S).

"Strong Businesses Reduce National Vulnerability": S Jaishankar

Underscoring that Atmanirbhar Bharat or a self-reliant India was a critical aspect of India's foreign policy, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday said that domestic businesses create jobs, strengthen capabilities, and reduce the vulnerability of a nation. He was speaking at the launch of former Niti Aayog CEO and G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant's book, Made In India, in Delhi. 

Mr Jaishankar said the improved ease of business has raised the global stature of India, and that the country has democratised the use of technology in the last few years. "We are moving towards the politics of delivery. It is delivery at the grassroots that is reshaping the thinking of the public," he said.

The Minister said Make In India, PM Modi's government's flagship programme to improve manufacturing, was not just an economic statement, but important to the country's strategic interests. 

"We hear the term wealth creators often, but that is gross injustice to reduce them to that. They are employment creators, they reduce the vulnerability of the nation. A strong business is not a business alone, but important to a nation's security," he said.
 
He added that the country is working on scaling up its manufacturing and the government was paying a lot of attention to that.

Global polarisation has made diplomacy difficult but is also a window of opportunity, he added, specifically pointing out that questions not answered in the past with regard to data and privacy are surfacing now. While the focus is on de-risking after the pandemic, Mr Jaishankar added India was focussing on devising its own solutions, because the story of its growth is also different from others. 

"Make in India is also about thinking...thinking through our growth strategy and devising solutions. Every time we have been confronted with a challenge, we have reflected upon it," he said, specifically giving the example of Covid-19.

Mr Kant said that if India has to grow at a higher rate, the private sector will have to play a very important role. He said India will need to fire on all cylinders, not just services but also manufacturing. The book, he added, has his experiences as the secretary of DPIT to bring in ease of business, get States to compete with each other and also build their investment potential.

Massive Fire In Firecracker Shops In Ahmedabad, Residents Evacuated

A massive fire broke out in firecracker shops located in an industrial area in Ahmedabad city of Gujarat today, prompting officials to evacuate several people from nearby residential areas as a precautionary measure.

Two fire brigade officials sustained minor injuries due to the bursting of firecrackers, officials said.

Officials said thick smoke engulfed the Vikas Estate area in Bapunagar locality where the affected shops are located. Panic gripped nearby residential areas due to the intermittent bursting of crackers in the fire.

More than a dozen fire tenders have been rushed to the spot, they said.

"The blaze erupted in a firecracker shop before spreading to adjacent godowns. Our priority is to prevent the fire from spreading to residential areas surrounding Vikas Estate," a fire brigade official said.

He said several people were evacuated from their houses as a precautionary measure even as thick smoke engulfed Bapunagar.

The exact number of evacuees cannot be known immediately.

"All fire tenders are on the spot. Police have evacuated residents in surrounding localities and we are ensuring that people do not come near the affected area. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. Police will take action," DCP (Zone 3) Sushil Agrawal said.

Prima facie, firecrackers were stored in commercial shops in the industrial estate.

"We are yet to ascertain whether they had the proper licence to store crackers. We will investigate," he said.
