Odisha Cops Probing Deaths of Russian Nationals: External Affairs Ministry
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday noted the reports of the deaths of Russian nationals in Odisha and added that the state police is looking into the matter as per laws.
"We are aware of these incidents. Odisha police is looking into the matter as per our laws," MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said during a weekly media briefing. "It is a police matter so don't want to jump the gun," he added.
On Wednesday, Odisha police said the post-mortem report of the dead ruled out any foul play after the reports of the death of two Russian nationals in Rayagada.
"The post-mortem report of the Russian businessman and lawmaker ruled out foul play. The report said the death was due to internal injuries after falling from a height. The other death was due to heart attack," said Odisha Police.
Odisha CID-Crime Branch said it has stepped up its probe into the death of two Russian nationals.
"The post-mortem was conducted and their viscera samples have been preserved for further scientific investigation. We are looking at all the aspects of the case," said a Crime Branch officer.
CID-Crime Branch interrogated two Russian nationals, who accompanied the dead and their interpreter at the Crime Branch headquarters in Cuttack on Wednesday.
The trio was on their way to Kolkata from Rayagada on Tuesday, when they were asked to come back and join the investigation by the Crime Branch.
The team of CID-Crime Branch, headed by a senior officer, will visit Rayagada on Thursday for further investigation. The team will visit the hotel where the dead and two other Russian tourists were staying, among other places.
According to the CID-Crime Branch, a preliminary investigation has revealed that the Russian nationals were on a trip to the tribal region of Odisha. The Crime Branch said it was conducting background checks on all of them, including their travel history.
On why the bodies were cremated and not sent to their families in Russia, the Crime Branch officer said the bodies were cremated by the police only after offical consent and undertaking from their family members and persons accompanying them.
"The families requested the police to send the ashes of the dead," the officer said.

Video: Two Sena Factions Face Off Inside Mumbai Civic Body Office
The rival Shiv Sena factions led by Uddhav Thackeray and Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde came face to face at the party's office at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) headquarters in south Mumbai on Wednesday evening.
Tensions prevailed for an hour on the premises till the police intervened.
The face-off took place after North Central Mumbai MP Rahul Shewale, former standing committee chairman Yashwant Jadhav and former corporator Sheetal Mhatre, all belonging to the Shinde-led Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena, entered the party office around 5 pm.

— ANI (@ANI) December 28, 2022
Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) faction's former corporators including Ashish Chemburkar and Sachin Padwal objected to their presence, leading to heated exchanges, sources said.
Tension prevailed for nearly an hour with workers from both sides shouting slogans before the police stepped in and removed everyone from the office.
Both factions claimed that there was no attempt by any side to stake claim to the party office, contrary to some reports.
The civic headquarters has offices of all major political parties on the ground floor of the heritage building.
Mr Shewale told PTI that they had not gone to stake any claim over the party office but were in the BMC building to meet the municipal commissioner.
"When we visited the office, we found a sticker covering the name of Yashvant Jadhav on the name plate. Because of his efforts, this office was set up. So we removed the sticker and garlanded the bust of Shiva Maharaj which is inside," he said.
Speaking in Nagpur, Maharashtra minister and Shinde faction leader Deepak Kesarkar said the office belongs to the Shiv Sena, and their faction was the authentic Shiv Sena as their claim has been accepted by the Maharashtra Assembly too.
"They (Thackeray faction) should realize that they have already lost their majority everywhere... They should accept that they have given up the ideology of Balasaheb Thackeray and Hindutva and they are in minority," he added.

UP Woman Gang-Raped In Shared Cab On Yamuna Expressway In Agra
A woman was allegedly gang-raped on the Yamuna Expressway in Agra by three occupants of her shared taxi which she had boarded from Noida, police said Wednesday.
The accused later dropped the woman along the expressway under the Etmadpur police station area and fled the spot, a senior official said, adding that the incident took place on Tuesday night.
The three accused have been apprehended, said the Agra police, which launched a probe into the matter on Wednesday morning after the woman approached Etmadpur police station to report the case.
“The woman had boarded the shared taxi from Sector 37 in Noida around 8.30 pm on Tuesday. The taxi was going to Firozabad from Noida. The woman claimed that three occupants of the taxi raped her on the Yamuna Expressway and dropped her at Etmadpur, from where she took an autorickshaw to Firozabad,” Agra Police Commissioner Dr Preetinder Singh said.
“On Wednesday morning, the woman came to Etmadpur police station and filed a complaint after which an FIR was lodged before sending her for a medical examination,” Mr Singh said.
The police commissioner said CCTV footage of toll plazas was analysed to track the taxi, a Maruti Eeco, which was used as the cab and it has been impounded.
“The three men who were involved in the case have also been apprehended. They are being interrogated and further legal proceedings are being carried out,” Mr Singh added.

"Threatened To Set Me On Fire": Abused Domestic Help In Noida To NDTV
Another case of abuse of a domestic help has surfaced in Noida near Delhi, the video of which is being widely circulated.
The victim, a 20-year-old woman, told NDTV that the family -- residents of Noida's Cleo County society -- beat her and even threatened to kill her after she ate some jaggery. A police case has been filed after a CCTV clip from the building's elevator, showing the woman being forcibly dragged inside, went viral.
The police said Shefali Kaul beat up the domestic help, Anita, regularly. When she refused to work and tried to run away, she was forcibly brought back. Anita, the police said, has bruises and scratches on her body and has undergone a medical check-up. The report is yet to come.
"She used to beat me every day, douse me with cold water," Anita, who is still traumatised, told NDTV. "On December 26, I had eaten a bar of jaggery, so I was beaten with slippers. Then she threatened to set me on fire and throw me down from the roof," she said, recounting the event that pushed her to escape.
She said she tied several dupattas end-to-end to make a rope of sorts and climbed down from the fourth floor. But the guard of the residential society caught her.
"The guard stopped me and called madam. She hit me and dragged me upstairs, choked my throat," said Anita, scratches on her ears, eyes and neck starkly visible.
The CCTV footage from the elevator shows Shefali Kaul trying to drag the girl out as she tries to hang back. Holding her in a headlock, she finally yanks the girl out.
Anita said she had been working for the family since April and her contract had expired in October, but they refused to release her. "I wanted to go home," she told NDTV.
"We received the complaint from the victim's father," said Saad Miya Khan, a senior officer of Noida police. The accused, he added, is missing and a hunt is on for them.
Over the last few years instances of violence being perpetrated on domestic helps, security guards, delivery boys, have been reported regularly from gated, high-rise residential societies in the National Capital Region.
In September, a woman professor, Sutapa Das, was seen caught on security camera slapping her society's security guard in Noida.
The month before, a man in Gurgaon was seen repeatedly slapping his apartment's security guard and another person because he got stuck in a malfunctioning lift.
The same month, a woman was arrested in Noida for manhandling a security guard and using obscene gestures and language. The reason was a delay in opening gates.

Greta Thunberg's Sassy Takedown Of Chauvinism Poster Child Andrew Tate
Renowned teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg has won the internet's admiration again, this time for very different reasons. Known for her worldwide marches and global speeches calling the youth and politicians to action, she has received more than her fair share of online trolling and derision.
In the latest such incident, controversial media personality Andrew Tate, who is known for his misogynistic and far-right comments, took to Twitter to seemingly needle Greta Thunberg, tagging her in a tweet which boasted about his collection of "33 cars" and their "enormous emissions".
Hello @GretaThunberg
— Andrew Tate (@Cobratate) December 27, 2022
I have 33 cars.
My Bugatti has a w16 8.0L quad turbo.

This is just the start.
Please provide your email address so I can send a complete list of my car collection and their respective enormous emissions. pic.twitter.com/ehhOBDQyYU
Twitter users flocked to the reply section to make jokes or express their irritation with Tate, but the piece de resistance of the whole interaction was Thunberg's witty reply to Tate. It called on him to enlighten her, and provided a fake, insulting email address for the same.
yes, please do enlighten me. email me at smalldickenergy@getalife.com https://t.co/V8geeVvEvg
— Greta Thunberg (@GretaThunberg) December 28, 2022
Tate's four syllable reply to Thunberg's retort fell short of expectations, with the former kickboxer simply writing "How dare you?!"
Meanwhile, Twitter users swarmed the reply section to Thunberg's tweet affirming their support for her and deriding Tate.

The Uttar Pradesh government on Wednesday appointed a five-member commission for providing reservation to Other Backward Classes in urban local body elections.
The panel will be headed by Justice (Retd) Ram Avtar Singh.
A notification on the panel's constitution, issued by the Urban Development department, said the commission term would be for a six-month period from the day of taking charge.
The constitution of the commission comes a day after the Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court quashed the state government's draft notification on urban local body elections and ordered it to hold the polls without reservation for the Other Backward Classes.
