Probe Agency Arrests Mumbai Builder Over Rs 500 Crore Fraud Case

The promoter of a Mumbai-based real estate company has been arrested under the anti-money laundering law in a case related to alleged fraud of more than Rs 500 crore, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) said on Thursday.

Mahesh Bhupatkumar Oza, promoter of Karan Group Builders and Developers, was taken into custody on January 10 from jail where he was lodged after he was first arrested by the Bengaluru police, it said.

The money laundering case is based on multiple FIRs filed by the Karnataka Police against Oza and others on the complaint of an investor who put money in his projects. "The complainant had invested about Rs 526 crore in different real estate projects undertaken by various groups and individuals. Subsequently, this amount was siphoned off by showing it as to be paid to various persons and collecting cash and commission in lieu of bank entry.

"Out of this total investment (of Rs 526 crore) made by the complainant, the bulk of the investment of Rs 121.5 crore was made for a real estate project undertaken by Karan Group Builders and Developers, headed by Mahesh B Oza," the federal probe agency said in a statement.  This amount, which was received for real estate projects, was "rotated" through various entities and subsequently "diverted" by Oza through another network of entities and people, it said.

State Shiv Sena Unit To Join Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra In Jammu

Extending support to the Rahul Gandhi-led Bharat Jodo Yatra which is scheduled to enter Jammu and Kashmir next week, Shiv Sena leader Manish Sahni on Wednesday said they will join the march in Jammu.

Mr Sahni, president of the J-K unit of Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), praised Mr Gandhi for the initiative and appealed to people to join the march in huge numbers to give a "befitting reply to those who do politics of hatred and religion".

"We will welcome and join the Bharat Jodo Yatra on its arrival in the city of temples as per the instructions of party's national secretary and MP Anil Desai. In this era of despair and hatred, the Yatra which is carrying the message of brotherhood is most needed in the country, especially in Jammu and Kashmir," he told reporters here.

He charged that religion and casteism are being resorted to divert public attention from various important issues like unemployment, inflation and economic distress.

"Jammu and Kashmir, the crown of the country, is suffering after it was bifurcated into two union territories (in August 2019) and its special status under Article 370 taken away," he said, adding people have been waiting for restoration of the democratic process over the past three years.

He also added that terrorist attacks on minorities have witnessed a spurt over the past couple of years.

The Yatra, which started from Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu on September 7, will conclude in Srinagar by January 30, with Gandhi hoisting the national flag in the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir. The march has so far covered Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.

High Court Pulls Up Maharashtra Government For Uncertainty Over Bike Taxi Policy

The Bombay High Court today rapped the Maharashtra government for its uncertainty on framing a policy permitting bike taxis in the state, and said it has to clarify its stand one way or the other.

A division bench of Justices Gautam Patel and SG Dige said the state government cannot keep the issue hanging over the fire and has to take a decision immediately.

The bench was hearing a petition filed by Roppen Transportation Services Private Limited, operator of Rapido bike taxi services in Pune and Mumbai, against a communication issued to it by the state government on December 29, 2022, refusing to allow them a bike taxi aggregator licence.

Appearing for the government, Advocate General Birendra Saraf on Tuesday told the court that as on date, bike taxis are not allowed to ply, as the government has not issued any no policy or guidelines for the same.

"The government has in fact issued a show cause notice to one such aggregator company for plying bike taxis without licence. A carriage licence is required in such cases," Mr Saraf said.

The court, however, said that it found it difficult to accept the government's stand that such bike taxis cannot ply till a policy is framed but at the same time the government is not even clarifying when it would come up with its policy.

"How can you (government) refuse for want of policy or guidelines? You may refuse it on any other ground but this. You cannot keep it hanging like this on fire. You have to take a decision even if it is on a temporary basis. We find it difficult to accept the government's stand," Justice Patel said.

The court said while it understands that the government has certain constraints, but the issue cannot be kept in limbo.

"You need not issue a one-size-fits-all policy or a blanket policy for the whole state. You may allow it in some cities and refuse in others. There could be different restrictions and safety guidelines in place for each city or district. But a decision one way or the other has to be taken," the bench said.

Mr Saraf agreed to this, but said pending a decision from the government, the petitioner company should stop plying their bike taxis.

"They (petitioner) have filed a petition here, but their bike taxis continue to ply," he said.

The court posted the matter for hearing on January 13 and directed the government to submit a list of those aggregators who are plying bike taxis in Maharashtra.

"There has to be a comprehensive policy equal to all. Every company has to be on the same page. Either everyone is allowed to ply or everybody stops. In the absence of policy or safety guidelines, no such service should be allowed to ply. Plying under the radar cannot be allowed," the court said.

The internet is full of entertaining content. Now, a video of a Pakistani couple shaking a leg on the "Beedi Jalaiela" song from Vishal Bhardwaj's 2006 directorial 'Omkara' is doing rounds on the internet. 

The video of the couple dancing to the peppy number was shared by a wedding photographer based in Pakistan. The clip shows a couple dancing to the song showing off their energetic moves, the woman is seen dressed in an orange sharara and the man is seen in a kurta and pyjama. More than the dance moves, their chemistry took the limelight.

The caption of the video reads, "What a powerful performance. Rocking the dance floor."
