Armenia-Azerbaijan Dispute Drags On, Russia Says Working On Resolving It

Russia said on Tuesday it was working hard to resolve a dispute between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the Lachin Corridor, the sole road linking Armenia to the Armenian-populated enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh.

The mountainous route across Azerbaijan has been blocked since Dec. 12, when protesters claiming to be environmental activists stopped traffic by setting up tents. Some 120,000 ethnic Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh depend on it for supplies of food, fuel and medicine.

The standoff has raised international concern, with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken calling on Monday for the immediate reopening of the route.

Russia is the main power broker in the region and has peacekeeping troops stationed along the Lachin corridor. Their failure to reopen it is a source of frustration for Armenia.

Russia "continues painstaking and difficult work with both Armenia and Azerbaijan," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters when asked to comment on Blinken's remarks. He did not elaborate.

Armenia says the protest was orchestrated by the Azerbaijani government as a deliberate blockade of Nagorno-Karabakh. Azerbaijan denies that, saying the activists are staging a legitimate protest against illegal mining activity.

The two countries have fought two wars since the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union over Nagorno-Karabakh, which is internationally recognised as part of Azerbaijan but populated mainly by ethnic Armenians.

Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool "Outsider" In Meghalaya, Says Conrad Sangma

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, who is also the president of the National People's Party, today brushed off the challenge from Mamata Banerjee in the upcoming state polls, tagging her party Trinamool an "outsider". Mr Sangma added that he has the "greatest respect" for her.

"I have the greatest and the deepest respect for Mamata Banerjee and the reason is the kind of respect she has shown to our leader (PA Sangma). We Can't forget that. I have deep a sense of respect for her," he said.

Mr Sangma underlined that it will be a while before the Bengal Chief Minister's party can establish itself in the state.

"Trinamool is a political party which does not have a base in Meghalaya and it will take a long time for them to establish themselves and for the people to accept them. Also, it is the old players who have come into their fold and they also are in a divided house... During the Bengal elections, the Trinamool had taken a stand that the national parties like the Congress and the BJP don't understand the issues of Bengal and are outsiders. Similarly, on same lines, Trinamool is an outsider party in Meghalaya right now," he said launching his party's campaign at Adokgre in North Garo hills.

Trinamool became the main opposition in the state following the defection of former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma and several other Congress legislators. Lunching her party's Meghalaya campaign, Mamata Banerjee announced that her party's primary focus in the elections is to fend off the BJP and its "proxies."

Mr Sangma's NPP, the only political party from the northeast that has the recognition of a national party, is the major party in the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA). BJP is a constituent of the MDA and has not entered into any prepoll understanding with any political party.

"Talking about our own coalition partners, we have always been clear with all of them that we will fight elections on our own terms. Post-election, we will review the scenario and decide how we will move forward," said Mr Sangma.

The Chief Minister said that he is confident of a good show in the polls.

"This time we are already moving forward with the vision and foundation we have laid in the last five years and showing the people how we have changed things in the last 5 years and how we will further take things in the next 50 years," he said.

Meghalaya will go to the polls on February 27. Votes will be counted on March 2.

Primal Instinct: California Shooting Hero Tells Of Wrestling Killer's Gun

The young coder credited with disarming the 72-year-old suspect in a mass shooting during Lunar New Year celebrations in California has described his "primal" battle with the gunman.

The man, identified by the New York Times as 26-year-old Brandon Tsay, was in the office of the Lai Lai Ballroom & Studio in Alhambra on Saturday night watching dancers when he looked up to see the suspect pointing a gun at him.

"My heart sank, I knew I was going to die," he told the newspaper.

"That moment, it was primal instinct," he said. "Something happened there. I don't know what came over me."

He lunged at the man and grabbed the barrel of the gun, beginning the fight of his life.

Mr Tsay, whose grandparents founded the ballroom, did not know that the suspect, identified by police as Huu Can Tran, was believed to have killed 10 people and wounded 10 others just minutes earlier at another dance hall in nearby Monterey Park.

He said he had never seen a gun in real life -- but that it was clear the gunman was there not to rob the place but to kill.

"From his body language, his facial expression, his eyes, he was looking for people," Mr Tsay told the Times.

Mr Tsay and his family said that security footage showed the pair struggling for around 90 seconds before he was able to seize the gun from the suspect.

He immediately pointed it back at him and yelled "Go, get the hell out of here," he told the newspaper.

The suspect fled. Hours later he was dead, shooting himself inside a white van in Torrance, several miles to the south, on Sunday afternoon as police moved to arrest him.

Five men and five women, all in their 50s or 60s, were killed by the gunman in Monterey Park on Saturday night.

Police have said the reason behind the attack, which came as Asian communities around the world celebrated the Lunar New Year holiday, remained a mystery.

They said they believe the gunman intended to carry out a similar massacre in Alhambra, and credited those who disarmed him with saving lives.

Los Angeles County sheriff Robert Luna has said two people disarmed the suspect in Alhambra -- but Mr Tsay and his family, who still run the ballroom, say the video footage shows he alone grappled with the killer.

Mr Tsay's older sister Brenda, who runs the business, said the footage showed the gunman's fierce struggle to keep control of his weapon.

"He kept coming at him," she told the Times. "He really wanted the gun back."

"Cutting 12,000 Jobs Step In Right Direction But...": What An Investor Told Google

Google's parent company Alphabet Inc eliminated 12,000 jobs or 6 per cent of its workforce. Hedge fund billionaire Christopher Hohn wrote a letter to Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai advising him to "cut thousand more jobs".

In a viral letter, the billionaire dated January 20 that Google's 12,000 layoff is a step in the right direction, but it does not reverse the very strong headcount growth of 2022. "Ultimately management will need to go further".

The founder of The Children's Investment Fund Management (TCI) holds a $6 billion stake in Google-parent company Alphabet, The Telegraph reported.

Last year, Sir Chris who paid himself a record  Euro 1.5m a day in 2022 added that Alphabet had doubled its headcount in the last five years and he advised that the management should aim to "reduce headcount to 150,000, which is in line with Alphabet's headcount at the end of 2021. This would require a total headcount reduction in the order of 20 per cent."

He also said that Google should "address excessive employee compensation". He further warned that the company should moderate stock-based payments.

Sir Chris added that he hopes to "have a further dialogue" with Sundar Pichai on these matters in due course.

On January 21, Google announced layoffs.

For years Alphabet has attracted top talent to build Google, YouTube and other products that reach billions of users, but it is now locked in competition with Microsoft Corp in a burgeoning area known as generative artificial intelligence.

The cuts at Alphabet come days after Microsoft said it would lay off 10,000 workers, Reuters reported.

"Don't Play With India's Pride": Rajnath Singh's Jibe At Rahul Gandhi

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday accused Congress leader Rahul Singh of creating hatred among people in order to regain power, and alleged that he was tarnishing India's image on international platforms.

Addressing a programme organised by the Madhya Pradesh government to provide land rights of residential plots to the poor in Singrauli district of the state located around 650 kms from here, Mr Singh asked Rahul Gandhi not to play with India's "prestige and pride".

The minister also said that in the recent clash with the Chinese troops, Indian soldiers did a "charismatic job" and displayed bravery, and slammed the Congress for questioning the valour of the country's jawans.

"Is India breaking? The country already got divided in 1947. Pakistan was created, though the leaders at that time were not in favour...These days, Rahul Gandhi is going around saying in his Bharat Jodo Yatra that there is hatred everywhere in India," he said.

"Rahulji, what has happened to you? You want to regain power by creating hatred. Power cannot be achieved by creating hatred, it can be achieved only by earning the public's trust and love." "I want to ask him who is creating hatred in India? Is Modiji creating hatred in the whole country? Is (MP Chief Minister) Shivraj Singh (Chouhan) doing the work of creating hatred in Madhya Pradesh? Are these leaders creating hatred among people? Where did he see it," he asked the gathering.

The minister also accused the Congress of trying to defame India and tarnish its image by saying that only hatred prevails in India, although the country has earned great respect in the world now.

India is the only country that considers all the people of the world as its family. India is being maligned that there is only hatred in India, he alleged.

India has never discriminated on the basis of caste, creed or religion as those born on Indian soil are brothers as all have sacrificed their lives for the country's independence, he added.

"I humbly want to say to Rahulji, don't spoil the image of India in the world by talking about hatred. You are creating hate by talking about it. You create hatred towards Modi and BJP by going to the people. The whole world is getting the image that there is only hatred in India," he said.

Referring to Rahul Gandhi's remark that he is out to sell love in the market of hatred, Mr Singh asked the gathering, "Have you also got some love from him? Now what does he know about love?" He said that Rahul Gandhi and Congress members should keep in mind that politics should not be done just to form the government and it should be done for the society and the country.

"Rahulji, don't play with India's prestige and pride. India is moving forward, if you can cooperate then do it, if you can't, then sit silently, don't try to defame India in the international arena," he said.

Mr Singh also said that Congress leaders can defame the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), but they dared to question the bravery and valour of the country's army and soldiers who risked their lives to protect the country.

"Being the country's defence minister, I don't want to speak openly. But I wanted to make it clear that whatever war has happened this time, be it between India-China, the bravery that our army soldiers have exhibited, if I discuss it in front of anyone, then everyone will boast, they have done a charismatic job," Mr Singh said.

Last month, Rahul Gandhi had alleged that China was preparing for war and the Indian government was sleeping over it and trying to ignore the threat. He had also alleged that China had taken away 2,000 square kilometres of Indian territory, killed 20 Indian soldiers and was "thrashing our jawans in Arunachal Pradesh".

Mr Singh said that India's economy has made a place among top five economies in the country during the past eight years.

Earlier, Rajnath Singh and MP CM Chouhan distributed free plots under CM Land Rights Scheme to over 25,000 beneficiaries besides disbursing the benefits of Rs 135 crore to 6.78 lakh farmers under the CM Kisan Kalyan Yojana.

Police Drill In Maharashtra Creates A Row Over Slogans By 'Terrorists'

A police mock drill in a temple in Chandrapur in Maharashtra landed in controversy after the personnel posing as terrorists were allegedly shouting slogans connected to a particular community.

A group of lawyers has submitted a memorandum to the district police authorities on the issue, while Superintendent of Police Ravindrasingh Pardeshi on Sunday said all efforts would be taken to ensure such an error is not repeated.

The mock drill, which was conducted on January 11 at the renowned Mahakali Temple, enacted a scene in which a group of terrorists took over a place of worship and held devotees hostage before being apprehended by security forces.

"Videos of the drill showing the personnel who played the part of terrorists in the mock drill shouting particular slogans. This portrays one community in a negative light and makes one believe all terrorists are from this community," said Farat Baig, part of lawyers' group here.

"We have submitted a memorandum to the office of the district SP against such sloganeering and portrayal. This act of the police amounts to defaming a community. Obviously, the script of the mock drill must have been overseen by the SP and other senior officials," Mr Baig said.

When contacted, SP Ravindrasingh Pardeshi said his department will "take necessary steps to ensure such an error is not repeated".

The mock drill was carried out by personnel from the local police, the Anti Terrorism Squad, the specialised combat unit C-60, among others, officials said.
