2 Friends Beaten Up By Men After Nightclub Row In Gurugram: Police

Two friends were beaten up by three men after an altercation between them at a club in MGF Metropolitan mall here early Saturday morning, police said.

The accused allegedly chased the friends down in their car after they left the club in a cab, and thrashed them before fleeing, police said.

According to the complaint filed by Saurabh Tuli, who currently lives in the Sector 52 area and is a native of Odisha, he had gone around midnight to Queens Club to party with one Vinod Yaduvanshi, a friend of his.

He said they both left the club at around 5.50 am Saturday and booked a cab online for their guesthouse.

"When our cab reached near Max hospital, one white Creta car overtook it and blocked the way. Three men got down from the car and beat me and my friend up and fled," Mr Tuli said in his complaint, according to police.

Mr Tuli said he later remembered the three were the same men they had a small row with at the club.

The accused were booked under sections 323 (causing hurt), 341 (wrongful confinement), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 34 (common intention) of the IPC at Sector 29 police station on Saturday evening.

High Court Lifts Stay On Trial In Lawyer Shahid Azmi's Killing Case

The Bombay High Court has vacated the stay on trial in the 2010 killing of criminal lawyer Shahid Azmi and rejected a plea filed by an accused seeking a change of the trial court on the grounds of "bias".

Mr Azmi was shot dead in his office in suburban Kurla on February 11, 2010.

At the time of his death, Mr Azmi represented many accused in the 7/11 train blasts cases, Malegaon 2006 bomb blasts cases, the Aurangabad arms haul case, and the Ghatkopar blasts case. Hansal Mehta's 2013 film 'Shahid' starring Rajkummar Rao is based on the life and work of Mr Azmi.

The prosecution case is that Mr Azmi was killed at the behest of gangster Chhota Rajan.

The High Court had stayed the trial in September 2022 after an accused - Hasmukh Solanki - moved an application to transfer the case to another sessions judge.

A single bench of Justice P D Naik on February 7 vacated the stay order and rejected Solanki's plea seeking transfer of the case from the sessions judge in Mumbai, currently conducting the trial, to another sessions judge.

Solanki had alleged bias by the present judge.

Justice Naik in the order said he did not find sufficient material on record to conclude that the trial court was biased against Solanki.

"The material on record is not sufficient to draw conclusion that the trial court is biased against Solanki and that he would not get a fair trial before the said court. No case is made out for transfer of trial," HC said.

Mr Azmi had been in Tihar jail for 7 years after being charged under the now-repealed Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Prevention Act (TADA) for his alleged involvement to kill politicians.

He was later acquitted by the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, he obtained an LLB degree while in prison.

2-Storey UP Building Collapses Live On Camera. A Basement Was Being Dug

A family in Uttar Pradesh's Hardoi escaped a horrific fate after the two-storey building that they were renting fell on its side on Friday and was reduced to rubble. An unsanctioned basement being dug in the plot next to it is suspected to have caused the collapse, police said.

Hardoi resident Rajkumar rushed out of the tilting building with his family and watched, amid a crowd of spectators, his home fall like a house of cards into empty neighbouring plot. Several videos, which captured the building collapse from different angles, showed the house reduced to dust in mere seconds.

Police said that there was unsanctioned construction work being done on the empty plot near the two-story house which affected its foundation. Footage taken before the dramatic fall of the building shows the dugout portion of the plot right next to the building's left wall. Videos, which have gone viral on social media, also showed two poles trying to support the building, in vain.

On receiving the information, Kotwali police reached the area and inspected the scene. They said that the investigation is on and action will be taken based on the filed complaint.

BJP Candidate Wins Election In Arunachal Constituency Without Contest

BJP candidate Tsering Lhamu was on Friday declared elected the MLA of Lumla constituency in Arunachal Pradesh's Tawang district without a contest.

Tsering Lhamu, the wife of former MLA Jambey Tashi, was the only candidate who filed her nomination for the by-election to the seat. The by-election was necessitated due to the death of her husband in November last year.

Returning Officer Rinchin Dorjee Thungon declared the result at 3 pm after the deadline for the withdrawal of candidature was over, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Liken Koyu said.

Ms Lhamu was handed the election certificate, he said.

Though People's Party of Arunachal (PPA) named former 'gaon burha' or village headman Leki Norbu as its candidate for the by-election, he withdrew from the race.

Mr Tashi, who represented the constituency for three consecutive terms since 2009, died at a hospital in Guwahati at the age of 48.

Assembly elections in the northeastern state will be due next year, and are likely to be held simultaneously with the Lok Sabha polls.

With this win, the ruling BJP's tally in the 60-member House remained at 49.

The opposition Congress and National Peoples' Party (NPP) have four MLAs each, while there are three Independent MLAs.

Australia, New Zealand Among Best Placed To Survive Nuclear Apocalypse, Study Finds

Scientists have recently revealed that Australia and New Zealand are best placed to survive a nuclear apocalypse and help reboot collapsed human civilisation.

The study, published in the journal Risk Analysis, has found that there are just a few island nations that could continue to produce enough food to feed their population after an "abrupt sunlight-reducing catastrophe" such as a nuclear war, super volcano or asteroid strike. These countries include not just Australia and New Zealand, but also Iceland, the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu.

There would "likely be pockets of survivors around the planet in even the most severe" scenario, the researchers wrote in the study. They compared 38 island countries on 13 factors which they said would predict which ones stood the best chance of surviving in a post-apocalyptic world.

The authors of the study found that Australia and New Zealand - both robust agricultural producers and tucked away from the likely sites of northern hemisphere nuclear fallout - topped the tables, with Australia performing best overall.

"Australia's food supply buffer is gigantic, with the potential to feed many tens of millions of extra people" the study read. The researchers noted that Australia's relatively good infrastructure, vast energy surplus, high health security and defence budget all aided in pushing it to the top of the table.

However, they also said that Australia does have one major factor working against it - its relatively close military ties with the United Kingdom and the United States make it more likely to become a target in a nuclear war. In this area, New Zealand displayed some advantages because of its longstanding nuclear-free status, the researchers wrote.

"We have this super efficient food export economy that could feed New Zealanders multiple times over just from exports," said one of the study's authors, Professor Nick Wilson from the University of Otago, Wellington. Mr Wilson also added that even in the worst-case scenario  - a 61 percent reduction in crops during a prolonged nuclear winter (something which scientists believe will happen following large-scale atomic warfare) - New Zealanders would still have enough to eat.

Other island countries would be able to produce enough food in such a crisis, however, the likely collapse of industry and social cohesion put their resilience in doubt, the researchers wrote.

The study also predicted that in an event of a nuclear apocalypse, China, Russia and the US could see food production fall up to 97 percent under nuclear winter models and would be forced to rely on new food production technologies.

Shot Down 61 Of 71 Missiles Russia Fired In Latest Attacks: Ukraine

Russia launched 71 cruise missiles at Ukraine on Friday and 61 of them were shot down, Ukraine's air force said.

"As of 11:30 a.m., the enemy had launched 71 X-101, X-555 and Kalibr missiles. The air defence forces, Air Force and other components of the Ukrainian Defence Forces destroyed 61 enemy cruise missiles," it said on the Telegram messaging app.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said earlier on Friday that Russia had fired more than 50 missiles at Ukraine and most of them were shot down.

"Russia cannot accept failures and therefore continues to terrorise the (Ukrainian) population. Another attempt (on Friday) to destroy the Ukrainian energy system and deprive Ukrainians of light, heat, and water," Shmyhal wrote on Telegram.

The Air Force said Russia had used eight Tu-95MS strategic bombers, and that they had fired X-101 and X-555 missiles from the Caspian Sea and the city of Volgodonsk in Russia.

Russian forces also launched Kalibr sea-launched cruise missiles from ships in the Black Sea, it said.

Editors Guild Asks Parliament To Restore Unrestricted Access To Journalists

The Editors Guild of India has urged Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar to grant unrestricted access of journalists to Parliament and lift curbs that came into force during the Covid pandemic.

In a letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker, the Guild also pointed out that access of senior journalists to Central Hall has been suspended and the Press Advisory Committee too has not been constituted for the last three years.

In a separate letter to Dhankhar, the Guild noted that limited access under Covid-19 protocols could be appreciated, but bringing back restrictions at a time when India remains in the forefront of maximum vaccination coverage remained unexplained.

It noted that journalists from print and electronic medium, have been given access to cover the proceedings of the Parliament since the first session in May 1952.

"Our request is to restore complete access to all accredited media persons immediately, including the Central Hall," the Guild said in the letter to Dhankhar.

The Guild apprised Birla that the Press Advisory Committee was founded in 1929 under the guidance of the President of the first elected Legislative Assembly, Vithalbhai Patel.

The Guild noted that G V Mavalankar, the first Speaker of the Lok Sabha, had decided that the Committee should, among other things, discharge advisory functions, including examination of temporary and permanent admissions to the press gallery and that applications for such admissions would be referred to the Committee for its opinion and advice.

"Since then, the process remained in place till it was abandoned recently," the Guild said.

"We are certain under your guidance, these restrictions will be lifted by the Secretariat and members of the media admitted will have unhindered access in the 'temple of democracy', as Prime Minister Narendra Modi characterised Parliament on his first visit in 2014," the Guild said in the letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker.

"Who Uses Maternal Grandfather's Surname?" Congress Hits Back At PM

Asking who in India uses their maternal grandfather's surname, the Congress on Friday hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his remarks on the Gandhis not using the Nehru name and said he doesn't have the basic understanding of Indian culture.

"Only god can save the country," AICC general secretary Randeep Surjewala told reporters a day after PM Modi, in a speech in the Rajya Sabha, asked why the Gandhis were ashamed of using the Nehru surname.

"Someone who is sitting on such a responsible position does not know or understand the culture of India...will speak like this.... You can ask any person in the country, who uses maternal grandfather's surname?" Mr Surjewala told a press conference at the party headquarters in the presence of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge.

"If he does not even have this basic understanding of India's culture, then only God can save this country," Mr Surjewala said.

In his speech in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, Prime Minister Modi targeted the Congress which has criticised the government for ignoring Jawaharlal Nehru's efforts in nation-building.

"...if Nehru ji's name is left out by us, we would correct our mistake as he was the first prime minister of the country. But I do not understand why anyone from his clan is afraid of keeping Nehru surname? Is there any shame in having the Nehru surname? What is the shame? When the family is not ready to accept such a great personality, why do you keep questioning us," he said.

The prime minister also criticised Nehru and former prime minister Indira Gandhi for repeatedly using Article 356 of the Constitution to topple state governments led by non-Congress parties.
