Long Lost Royal Bed May Finally Serve UK Monarch

Although a little larger than king size, an unusual bed stored in Britain's Palace of Westminster with a remarkable history could see its first royal sleepover ahead of Charles III's coronation in May.

The regal crib, which has its origins in a thousand-year-old tradition observed up to the time of Henry VIII in the 16th century, was lost for decades but is ready for service after a remarkable journey.

On the night before coronation, the sovereign traditionally spent the night at the Palace of Westminster, then the Royal Palace.

After falling out of favour, the tradition was revived two centuries ago for the coronation of George IV in 1821.

But that bed was destroyed in the fire that ravaged Parliament in 1834.

So another one, finished in 1858, was made but has "actually never been used the night before the coronation", parliamentary historian Mark Collins told AFP.

Discovery in mill

It was not ready for Queen Victoria's coronation in 1838 and subsequent monarchs chose not to spend the night at Westminster.

The bed was dismantled and stored away during World War II, forgotten as the Victorian era fell out of fashion.

Its whereabouts were unknown at the time of Elizabeth II's coronation in 1953 and it was not until the late 1970s that a V&A Museum expert, Clive Wainwright, launched an appeal to try to find the bed.

His efforts proved successful, with a family coming forward to reveal it was located at a woollen mill in Wales.

It had been bought at an auction for £100 ($119) in the 1960s by the parents of Richard Martin, now 70.

"They knew it was a special item, they knew that it was something important, but they didn't know where it had come from at all," said historian Collins.

And for about 20 years, the bed had a very busy life. One of the family's children, Benedict, was even born there in 1965.

'Night-time throne'

The fantastical piece stirred the imagination of a young Richard Martin on his way to the land of nod.

"When I was a child... we thought that whoever lived in the bed, who slept in the bed, would put their cigarette" in little holes carved in the wood, while reading or drinking tea, he told AFP.

"Nobody else had a bed like that", he said, calling it "a night-time throne".

The bed was bought back from the family and then restored.

The original royal red and purple hangings, adorned with the rose for England, the thistle for Scotland and the clover for Ireland, had long disappeared and were recreated in 1984.

The public can now see the piece following Speaker Lindsay Hoyle's decision to open the rooms up for tours, but it will be hidden from view during the King's coronation weekend, starting May 5.

The "State Bed" lives a stone's throw from Big Ben in a dedicated room in parliament's Speaker's quarters, with windows overlooking Westminster Bridge and the London Eye.

The upper part of the bed, which has a walnut frame with gilding and royal symbols, is over three metres (about 10 feet) high.

The question now remains whether Charles will captain its maiden royal voyage.

Ms Collins said it will be ready for action, whatever the decision.

"I don't think it'd be too long before we actually find out whether it'll be used again.

"The bed the bed is definitely ready, just in case."

Hindi film actor Arshad Warsi, who along with his wife Maria Goretti is among 45 individuals and companies banned by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) from participating in the securities market, said on Thursday that his knowledge about stocks is zero and he lost all money that was invested in the market.

After facing a lot of backlash on social media and in the news, the actor tweeted, "please do not believe everything you read in the news."

Talking about his inability to do any harm in the stock market, he wrote that "Maria and my knowledge about stocks is zero. We took advice and invested in Sharda, and like many others, we lost all our hard-earned money."

Earlier in the day, SEBI took the decision of banning after an investigation into allegations of share price manipulation by certain entities of two companies, Sharpline Broadcast Ltd and Sadhna Broadcast Ltd, through uploading misleading videos on YouTube channels.

SEBI found that certain individuals uploaded false and misleading videos recommending investors buy shares of Sadhna Broadcast Ltd and Sharpline Broadcast Ltd for extraordinary profits.

In addition to Arshad Warsi and Maria Goretti, some promoters of Sadhna Broadcasting Ltd. have also been restrained from participating in the securities market.

Along with the ban, SEBI has impounded illegal gains worth Rs 54 crore made by the entities after misleading videos were uploaded on YouTube channels. Two separate interim orders detail the investigation's findings.

According to the interim order, Arshad Warsi made a profit of Rs 29.43 lakh, Maria Goretti earned a profit of Rs 37.56 lakh, and Iqbal Hussain Warsi made a gain of Rs 9.34 lakh.

These three individuals, among others, have been classified as volume creators by SEBI.

The investigation began after SEBI received complaints alleging that certain entities were engaging in price manipulation and offloading shares of Sadhna Broadcast Ltd. and Sharpline Broadcast Ltd.

The complaints alleged that misleading videos with false content about the two companies were uploaded to lure investors.

Drug Mafias 'Protected' By Pakistan: Punjab Chief Minister To Amit Shah

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Thursday met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and discussed the issue of drones and drugs on the Indian-Pakistan border, among other topics, the Punjab CM office said.

Punjab CM also told Mr Shah that the drug mafia is being given "protection" by Pakistan.

During the meeting that lasted for about 40 minutes near the Home Minister's residence in the national capital, both leaders discussed the coordination between the Centre and the state to further strengthen border security.

Punjab CM Mann, after the meeting, took to Twitter and said, "We discussed the issue of drones and drugs on the border and the issue of shifting the barbed wire on the border was also discussed."

According to Border Security Force (BSF), in 2022, a total of 22 drones were captured by the jawans.

In addition, last year, according to BSF, a total of 316 Kg of drugs were seized by the BSF and the BSF along the Punjab border killed two Pakistani intruders.

The BSF earlier this year said, "The troops of the Punjab Frontier have maintained an extremely high level of alertness and vigil. Resultantly, BSF has successfully detected and captured 22 drones and seized 316.988 kgs of heroin, 67 weapons, 850 rounds and killed two Pakistan intruders and apprehended 23 Pakistan nationals in different incidents."

BSF, Punjab Frontier is responsible for safeguarding the 553-km long tough and challenging India-Pakistan International Border in Punjab.

Mr Mann further asked the Home Minister to release the state's stalled rural development fund.

"I asked to release Punjab's stalled rural development fund soon. Centre and the state will work together on the issue of law and order," Mr Mann wrote in his tweet.

According to the Punjab CM office, there was also a discussion about the early deployment of the SSP of the Punjab cadre in Chandigarh.

The meeting regarding law and order comes against the backdrop of the Ajnala incident in which self-styled Sikh preacher and Khalistani sympathiser Amritpal Singh and his supporters, carrying swords and guns, clashed with police at a police station in Amritsar for the release of one of his aides.

Six police personnel, including a superintendent of police-rank officer, were injured in the clash last week.

Russia Fighting "Terrorist Attack" In Ukraine Border Region, Says Putin

President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday Russia was fighting off a "terrorist attack" in the southern Bryansk region bordering Ukraine, and vowed to crush what he said was a Ukrainian sabotage group that had fired at civilians.

Ukraine accused Russia of staging a false "provocation", but also appeared to imply some form of attack had indeed been carried out by Russian anti-government partisans.

Amid reports of shelling and sporadic sabotage, Russia's border regions have become increasingly volatile since Moscow invaded Ukraine a year ago in what it called a "special military operation".

Putin, in a televised address, accused the group of opening fire on civilians, including children. Bryansk Governor Alexander Bogomaz had earlier said that the Ukrainians had shot and killed one person and injured a child.

"They won't achieve anything. We will crush them," said Putin, saying the group was made up of the kind of people who wanted to rob Russia of its history and language.

In two videos circulating online, armed men calling themselves the "Russian Volunteer Corps" said they had crossed the border to fight what they called "the bloody Putinite and Kremlin regime."

Calling themselves Russian "liberators", the armed men called on Russians to take up arms and rise up against the authorities. They said they did not open fire on civilians.

Reuters could not immediately verify the videos' authenticity.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that law enforcement agencies would determine who was responsible and Putin was being briefed by security chiefs on the situation.

KIEV ACCUSES MOSCOW OF 'PROVOCATION'

Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak wrote on Twitter: "The story about (a) Ukrainian sabotage group in RF (Russian Federation) is a classic deliberate provocation."

He said Russia "wants to scare its people to justify the attack on another country & the growing poverty after the year of war."

A spokesman for Ukrainian military intelligence suggested the makeup of the sabotage group was a sign of internal strife inside Russia.

"These are people who with weapons in their hands are fighting the Putin regime and those who support it... Maybe Russians will begin to wake up, realise something and take some concrete steps," Andriy Yusov told Ukrainian outlet Hromadske.

Russia's FSB security service said in a statement to Russian news agencies on Thursday that its own forces and the army were trying to liquidate what it described as "an armed group of Ukrainian nationalists" who had crossed the border.

Bryansk Governor Bogomaz said on his Telegram channel: "Today, a Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance group penetrated the Klimovsky district in the village of Lubechanye. "Saboteurs fired on a moving car. As a result of the attack, one resident was killed and a ten-year-old child was wounded."

He said Ukrainian armed forces had carried out a drone attack and fired artillery at other areas near the border.

Reuters was unable to immediately verify the reports.

British military intelligence said on Wednesday that Russia was launching drone attacks on Ukraine from the Bryansk region, which lies to the north of Ukraine and is closer to its capital Kyiv than other launch sites.

The Russian state news agency TASS said the Ukrainians had infiltrated two villages, taking local residents hostage in one of them. The RIA news agency said several people had been taken hostage in a store in the village of Lubechanye, less than one kilometre from the border with Ukraine.

Russia has accused Ukrainian saboteurs of infiltrating Bryansk before.

In December, the FSB said a four-person Ukrainian "sabotage group" had been "liquidated" while trying to enter Bryansk.

Putin told the FSB this week that it needed to step up its guard against espionage and what he called terrorist threats emanating from Ukraine and the West.

"Your task is to put a barrier in the way of sabotage groups, to stop attempts to illegally transport weapons and ammunition into Russia," he said in a speech on Tuesday.

16 Congress, 3 AAP MLAs Stage Walkout, Suspended From Gujarat Assembly

A total of 19 legislators from the opposition Congress and the AAP were suspended from the Gujarat Assembly for a day on Wednesday after they shouted slogans against the BJP government before walking out of the House over the issue of a fake trainee PSI found undergoing training at a state-run police training academy.

When Assembly Speaker Shankar Chaudhary rejected Congress' demand for a discussion on the issue on an urgent basis claiming that it is linked to the future of youths, 16 Congress MLAs and three from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), who were present in the House, staged a walkout as a mark of protest.

Gujarat Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs minister Rushikesh Patel moved a resolution for the suspension of these members for a day claiming that opposition MLAs raised placards and shouted slogans as a "pre-planned" strategy.

With the support of three independent MLAs, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government's resolution was passed, paving the way for the suspension of the 19 MLAs of the Congress and the AAP for a day for "creating ruckus, shouting slogans and walking out of the House".

On Tuesday, the office of the state Director General of Police (DGP) had announced that a person named Mayur Tadvi has been caught undergoing training as a trainee police sub-inspector (PSI) at the Police Training Academy in Karai village near Gandhinagar on forged documents.

Investigation conducted into the case so far has revealed that Tadvi prepared a forged letter of his selection as a PSI and entered the Karai-based academy a month back as a trainee. However, he was eventually caught after officials found that his name was not there in the list of selected candidates when salary bills for 582 trainees were being prepared.

Though the Congress had submitted a notice for discussion in the House on Tuesday under rule 116 of the Assembly, which deals with matter of "urgent public importance", senior party MLA Amit Chavda sought a discussion on Wednesday itself, calling the incident "serious" and saying that there may be many others who have gained entry into the academy through such illegal means.

Congress MLA Shailesh Parmar said though the party has given a notice for discussion under rule 116 and it may come up for discussion after some days, the state government can at least give an assurance to the House because the issue affects all the youths of Gujarat.

When Mr Chaudhary rejected their demand saying he cannot bypass the rules and he has to give at least two days to the concerned minister to come with his reply under rule 116, Congress MLAs started shouting slogans and waving placards demanding a discussion today itself alleging that the government is promoting corrupt practices.

They also sought resignation of Minister of State for Home, Harsh Sanghavi, and also sought an explanation from Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.

In his response, Chief Minister Patel condemned Congress's demand and said his government is capable of curbing all kinds of illegal activities.

"The House is not meant for satisfying the wishes of a person or a party. Recently, as you have seen, we brought a law to curb paper leaks and also took part in the discussion. My government is capable of stopping all kinds of illegal activities. Our home minister has done great work for the youth, such as cracking down on drugs. Therefore, it is not proper to stand up in the House just to prove something," the Chief Minister said in the House.

Despite the Chief Minister's statement, Congress and AAP MLAs continued their protest and did not sit down despite the Speaker's repeated requests. They insisted that a discussion must be allowed today itself under any other rule if not permitted under 116.

When the demand was not accepted by the Speaker, opposition members walked out of the House, after which they were suspended.

In the 182-member Gujarat Assembly, the BJP has 156 MLAs, Congress 17 and AAP five.

Rs 100 Crore Fine Collected From Ticketless Train Passengers In Mumbai: ''A Record''

Central Railways' Mumbai division has collected a whopping Rs 100 crore from passengers travelling in the train without ticket. With this, Mumbai has become the first division in Indian Railways to achieve this remarkable feat. The amount has been collected from April 2022 to February this year from 18 lakh ticketless passengers. Last year, the figure was Rs 60 crore. Central Railways has been warning people to avoid travelling in trains without tickets, but said passengers have been ignoring all the advice, leading to such huge collection.

''We don't have a target to meet. Our main purpose through ticket checking exercise is to make travel of passengers comfortable and convenient. We intensified ticket checking after complaints that ticketless passengers are causing inconvenience to those who have bought tickets, both in trains and on stations and got this result. It's a record in itself,'' Central Railways chief public relations officer Shivaji Sutar told NDTV.

He added that the fine amount includes collection from ticketless passengers in suburban, as well as Express and other regular trains within the Mumbai division.

The Mumbai division has 77 railway stations and 1,200 travel ticket examiners (TTEs), who are continuously on the lookout for passengers travelling without tickets.

''The body language of a passenger often tells us that there is something fishy. And our experience of looking at so many passengers every day also helps in spotting the culprits,'' Preeti Singh, a TTE, told NDTV.

She added that it's not easy to make a ticketless passenger pay as they make several excuses. ''But after they realise their mistake, we prosecute them under relevant sections,'' said Ms Singh.

Central Railways said in a release that Rs 100 crore includes fine of Rs 87.43 lakh recovered from 25,781 passengers who were found travelling without tickets in air-conditioned local trains, and Rs 5.05 crore from 1.45 lakh passengers travelling without tickets in first class coaches.

In 2019-20, the Mumbai division had collected Rs 76.82 crore from 15.73 lakh passengers.

Install CCTV In Police Stations As Per Supreme Court Order: Delhi Court

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday asked authorities to complete the process of installation of CCTVs in police stations to ensure compliance with the Supreme Court's order.

The court's direction came on a petition for installation of functional CCTV cameras in all the police stations in the city.

The Delhi Police, in a status report, submitted that fresh bids for equipment were invited through the GeM portal last year and at present, the tender is at the stage of evaluation and "it is working on commencing the tender process expeditiously".

In January, the police had told the court that 1,941 CCTV cameras have been installed and are operational in 197 police stations here and a fresh e-bid had been invited for installing 2,175 additional cameras having audio-video recording facility.

"In view of the above status report, let bids be evaluated and order be placed on the successful bidder to ensure compliance of the Supreme Court order," said Justice Prathiba M Singh.

In view of the pendency of the issue before the top court, the court closed the proceedings in the present matter, saying no further orders were required in this petition and the petitioner will be at liberty to avail the remedies available to him in law.

In an earlier status report, the police had said that after the top court's December 2020 judgment directing installation of CCTV cameras with storage period of 18 months, the Commissioner of Police has constituted a committee of senior police officers to examine the matter as expeditiously as possible.

Recently, on February 21, the top court had directed the Centre and state governments to comply within a month with its directions on mandatory installation of CCTV cameras in police stations and offices of investigation agencies while clarifying that in case of non-compliance, it would be compelled to take necessary steps against the officials concerned.

Before the high court, besides functional CCTVs, petitioner Chandril Dabas had also sought directions to ensure that the footage is stored at least for a minimum period of one year or eighteen months.

The petitioner, represented by lawyer Manan Aggarwal, said in his petition that in June 2021, he was harassed and threatened by certain police officials after he was found without an e-pass issued for movement during the COVID-19 pandemic.

He claimed in the plea that he explained to the police that he was going to his workplace to get the documents for issuance of an e-pass but he was taken to the concerned police station and made to sign some papers.

It was the petitioner's grievance that when he approached the trial court for initiation of action against the erring officials and sought preservation of CCTV footage, the police claimed that the CCTV footage in question could not be preserved as the backup was only for eighteen days and the camera covering the open area of the police station was also not functional.

The petition thus argued that such a situation is in violation of a Supreme Court decision which directed that CCTV footage in all police stations must be stored for a period of at least 18 months.
