Police Case Against UP Cleric Over Remarks Against PM Modi

Police have booked Ittehad-e-Millat Council president Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan for allegedly making inflammatory remarks, including an objectionable comment against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, an official said today.

A case was registered on Sunday against Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan, accused of making provocative statements and objectionable remarks against the prime minister at Nagphani police station in Moradabad, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Hemraj Meena said.

Talking to reporters in Moradabad on Saturday, the Ittehad-e-Millat Council chief had said that the government which files a case of treason against those demanding Khalistan should also do the same with those who demand a Hindu rashtra.

On the basis of a video obtained through the media, he has been booked under 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence), 295 (outraging religious feelings) and 505-2(statements conducing to public mischief) of the IPC for inciting communal feelings and making objectionable comments and further action will be taken after checking viral videos, the SSP said.

According to police, Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan had said that a case of treason should also be filed against those who demand Hindu nation but the government does not do this even as the law is equal for everyone in the country.

He also made indecent remarks against Prime Minister Modi, police said.

As per the video that went viral on social media, Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan said "what would happen if our youths started demanding a Muslim nation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's slogan of Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas is a lie. Some fanatics are sowing the seeds of hatred in the country. Those who do this and their supporters are neither well wishers of any society nor of the country, but are traitors", police said.

Reacting to the FIR against him, Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan in Bareilly said if what he said was so wrong then the administration needs to have a case of treason against him.

Stressing that he does not want to divide the country at any cost, he clarified that those who want to create a divide among Hindus and Muslims should be identified and action should be taken against them.

"The Modi government is not doing justice with Muslims...bulldozers should be run on the houses of those also who killed Muslims and the accused should be arrested. Law in this country is the same for all," he added.

Minister Demands Sedition Case Against Rahul Gandhi For London Remarks

Union minister Giriraj Singh on Monday sought action against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi from Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla for his recent comments in London and favoured a sedition case against him.

Mr Singh alleged that Mr Gandhi spoke like the "tukde-tukde gang" during his visit to the UK.

"He has spoken so much in Parliament, but in London he said he is not allowed to speak, the mic is switched off. I think this is an attack on democracy and insult to Lok Sabha and the country," Singh told reporters outside Parliament House.

Asked if a sedition case should be filed against Mr Gandhi, Mr Singh said, "Absolutely, what else is sedition".

Last week, Mr Gandhi told British parliamentarians that functioning microphones in the Lok Sabha are often silenced against the Opposition.

"Our mikes are not out of order, they are functioning, but you still can't switch them on. That's happened to me a number of times while I am speaking,” the Congress leader said.

Mr Singh called Mr Gandhi's remarks "utter lies".

"The Lok Sabha speaker should take action against it. These statements are an insult to the country. India is getting respect from the world and he is going abroad and speaking like tukde-tukde gang," the rural development minister said.

Law minister Kiren Rijiju too slammed Mr Gandhi in a tweet.

"It's most unfortunate that one MP of India went to London and appealed foreign countries to intervene in the internal matters of India. We all are proud of our democracy and cherish our democratic legacies. Indians will never ever allow the foreign powers to rule India again," Mr Rijiju tweeted.

Calling "Adivasis" As "Vanvasis" Insulting: Sharad Pawar Slams BJP

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar on Sunday targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), saying that it was insulting to call tribals or 'adivasis' as "vanvasis", and those who use that term show their ignorance.

He was speaking at a function here.

"Some people prefer to call tribals 'vanvasis' as in those who live in forests. It will not be an exaggeration if I say that it is an insult to call tribals as 'vanvasis'. They are 'adivasi'," the former Union minister said without naming anyone.

"They are the true owners of 'jal', jungle and 'zameen' (water, jungle and soil). The people who use such terms (vanvasi) show their ignorance towards adivasis as well as their efforts in preserving the jungles in this country. The credit (of preserving forests) is theirs (tribals')," he said.

Yashwantrao Chavan Pratisthan, an organisation headed by Sharad Pawar on Sunday started its Tribal Welfare Centre.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been targeting the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that they have been using a "derogatory" term 'vanvasi' (forest dweller) to refer to adivasis. During a rally in Madhya Pradesh in November last year, Rahul Gandhi had said the BJP should apologise with folded hands for disrespecting tribals by calling them 'vanvasi'.

"A few days back, I heard a speech of PM Narendra Modi in which he used a new word, 'vanvasi', for 'adivasis'. It means adivasis are not the first owners of the country and that they only live in forests," the former Congress president had said.

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) backs an organisation named Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram that works for the welfare of tribals.

"Compliments To Entire Team": PM Modi On Central Railways' "Outstanding Feat"

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday complimented the team of Central Railway for achieving 100 per cent electrification of the entire broad gauge network.

"Outstanding feat. Compliments to the entire team," the PM said in a tweet, responding to the tweet by Central Railway.

As per the Central Railway, it has achieved 100 per cent railway electrification on all Broad Gauge routes which is almost 3825 Kilometres.

The last non-electrified section of Central Railway i.e. Ausa Road- Latur Road (52 RKM) on Solapur Division was electrified on February 23 this year.

"Central Railway now fully electrified on all Broad Gauge routes has helped in reducing carbon footprints of 5.204 lakh tons every year and also saves Rs. 1670 crores annually. The pace of railway electrification, which is environment friendly and reduces pollution, has increased at 9X speed since 2014," the Central Railways said.

Railways has planned the electrification of Broad Gauge routes, which will facilitate the elimination of diesel traction resulting in a significant reduction in its carbon footprint and environmental pollution.

The railway, where the first electric train ran in India between the then Bombay Victoria Terminus (now Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus) and Kurla on the Harbour line on February 3 in 1925.

"The section was electrified on 1500 Volt DC. The conversion of DC traction on Mumbai Division of Central Railway to AC traction began in 2001 and progressively, without significant disturbance to the lifeline of the nation, i.e. suburban services, was completed in 2016," it added.

Naresh Lalwani, General Manager, Central Railway said, "Railway is guided by a historical vision of being an environment friendly, efficient, cost-effective, punctual and a modern carrier of passengers as well as the freight in order to serve the growing needs of New India. This will also significantly reduce the fuel bill and earn carbon footprints".

Chinese City Suggests Lockdowns For Flu Outbreaks, Criticised Online

A Chinese city has received negative feedback on social media after saying it might consider using lockdowns in the case of an influenza outbreak, CNN reported.

Last week, the city of Xi'an, a popular tourist destination in Shaanxi province and the location of the world-famous terracotta warriors, unveiled an emergency response plan that would allow it to close down businesses, schools, and "other crowded locations" in the event of a serious flu outbreak.

This led to a mixture of worry and rage among many social media users who claimed the plan uncomfortably resembled parts of the stringent zero-Covid policies Beijing had put in place throughout the pandemic and which have just lately been abandoned.

A report published in CNN said that on Weibo, China's version of Twitter, a person argued that it would be better to vaccinate the populace rather than take the opportunity to incite fear.

Another person questioned, "How would people not panic considering that Xi'an's suggestion to halt business and work activities was issued without specific guidance on the national level to identify the disease?

Although the number of Covid cases in China is declining, the number of flu cases has increased nationwide, and some pharmacies are finding it difficult to keep up with the demand for flu medications.

The emergency action plan for Xi'an won't always be used though. Instead, it describes four levels of severity for future outbreaks and how the city of nearly 13 million people will respond to each.

At the first and highest level, "The city can lock down affected regions, implement traffic quarantines, and suspend production and economic activity." Furthermore, crowded areas including malls, theatres, libraries, museums, tourist destinations, and other gathering places will remain shut.

At this degree of emergency, all schools and nurseries would be closed, and they would be in charge of monitoring the health of the children and students.

The response comes as Beijing's central government has underlined the necessity of reopening the nation after all Covid restrictions were lifted in January.

China has implemented some of the strictest Covid regulations in the world throughout the pandemic, including lockdowns that lasted for months in certain cities.

Notwithstanding mounting evidence of the harm being done to its economy, it was also among the last nations in the world to abolish practises like mass testing and lengthy border quarantines.

According to CNN, 13 million people were imprisoned in their houses for weeks at a time in Xi'an itself between December 2021 and January 2022, and many were left without food and other necessities. Medical service accessibility was also impacted.

A severely pregnant woman was turned away from a hospital on New Year's Day because she lacked a valid Covid-19 test, shocking and infuriating the nation. Two hours later, when she was eventually admitted, the woman miscarried.

China had experienced a series of protests over its zero-Covid policy just before it lifted its limitations on the epidemic era.

Many still have vivid memories of being confined to their houses and of panic buying that in certain regions resulted in food shortages, so the idea of a return to Covid-style regulations seems to have struck a nerve.

Several voices, however, urged restraint.

The move's logic was clear to epidemiologist Ben Cowling of the School of Public Health at the University of Hong Kong.

"I believe that creating backup plans is very reasonable. Although apparently there are multiple reaction levels, I wouldn't anticipate that a lockdown would be required for the virus," he said.

Similar thoughts were shared by a user on Weibo, who said, "It is only the revelation of a proposal, not putting it in place. Given that this flu epidemic is hitting us hard, it is very normal to take measures," CNN reported.
