"India, UK Natural Partners In A Volatile World": British Chief Of Defence Staff
India and the UK are "natural partners" in a world that is becoming more "contested and volatile", Britain's Chief of the Defence Staff Admiral Sir Tony Radakin said on Monday as he began a three-day visit to India.
Admiral Radakin is taking part in a series of high-level meetings in India this week, continuing momentum in building strategic ties between the two countries.
The British CDS began his visit to India by paying homage to the fallen soldiers at the National War Memorial this morning ahead of his first meeting with his Indian counterpart Gen Anil Chauhan.
The two chiefs reviewed progress on various pillars of the UK-India defence partnership and exchanged views to further expand ties in all the domains, a British readout said.
It said the UK and India are natural partners in defence and share a strong and enduring relationship, including collaboration in research, development and training.
Admiral Radakin said his visit to India reflects the UK's belief that our security is indivisible from that of the wider world.
"As a global trading nation it matters to the UK that the Indo-Pacific is open and free, which is why the British Armed Forces are establishing the broadest and most integrated presence in the region of any European nation," he said.
"India and the UK are natural partners in a world that is becoming more contested and volatile. We share many of the same democratic instincts and values and are both committed to the rule of law," he was quoted in the readout.
Admiral Radakin said India and the UK can do more in the area of defence cooperation.
"We are respected military powers, both undergoing significant investment and modernisation, and exercising together across, land, sea and air. But we can do more. I value the opportunity to meet with General Anil Chauhan to discuss how we can develop our partnership in a way that benefits our mutual security and prosperity," the British CDS added.
Admiral Radakin held discussions with the Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Hari Kumar, Chief of the Army Staff General Manoj Pande, Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane, and Additional Secretary Defence Production T Natarajan.
The release also quoted British Defence Secretary Ben Wallace as saying that India is a valued defence partner for the UK and the relationship continues to flourish across our research and industrial sectors.
"Both our nations are committed to the stability and prosperity of the Indo-Pacific and we continue to train and operate alongside our Indian partners to promote security in the region," he said.
Over the next two days, Admiral Radakin will be hosted by various establishments of the Indian Armed Forces across the country, in a bid to boost military-to-military engagement and explore opportunities around the co-creation of future technologies.
Following the signing of an updated Memorandum of Understanding in 2019, discussions around industrial collaboration in the aerospace sector have been progressing, with the UK's Minister for Defence Procurement visiting India in February and the First Sea Lord visiting in March.

Pune School Used To Radicalise By Banned Group PFI: Anti-Terror Agency
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Sunday attached two floors of a school building in Maharashtra's Pune where the banned Popular Front of India (PFI) had been organising camps to radicalise and indoctrinate Muslim youth and further train them for carrying out targeted killings and attacks against leaders and organisations of a particular community.
"The anti-terror agency seized the 4th and 5th floors of the Blue Bell School building that were used by PFI to plan and prepare for carrying out terrorist activities with the aim of "endangering the unity, integrity and security of India", said the agency.
As per the NIA, the PFI was recruiting innocent Muslim youth into the outfit at these premises, and also providing them with armed and unarmed training to eliminate and attack those opposed to the establishment of Islamic Rule in the country by 2047.
The two floors have been attached by the NIA as "proceeds of terrorism" under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 in a case registered by the agency on April 13 last year. The NIA had filed a charge sheet on March 18 this year before a special court in Delhi against 20 accused, including the PFI as an organisation.
The NIA took the step following its search operation conducted at the two floors of the school premises on September 22 last year that led to the seizure of incriminating documents, which revealed that the property was used by the accused, found to be associated with the PFI, for organising Arms Training for its cadres.
"The Training camps served as platforms to incite innocent Muslim youth against the Government, as well as leaders and organisations of a particular community. The camps were also used to inflame their passions and provoke them into embracing violent jihad, with the aim of committing terrorist activities," said the NIA.
"The newly recruited PFI cadres were trained in the use of dangerous weapons, like knives, sickles etc., for attacking and murdering prominent leaders opposed to the outfit's ideology of establishing an Islamic Rule in India," the NIA added.
NIA investigations had earlier revealed that the accused persons were part of the criminal conspiracy to establish a Caliphate and Islamic Rule in India by waging war against the country and toppling the democratically elected government.
"They were all identified as senior PFI cadres, NEC Members, Accountant(s), Authorised signatories of PFI's bank accounts," said the agency, adding "Further investigations are under progress to unearth the roles of other accused persons and suspects in the case."
The NIA has been investigating the activities of the PFI, which was declared as an 'unlawful association' in September 2022.

Lt Governor's Legal Action Threat Over AAP Leaders' Power Subsidy Claims
Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has written a strongly worded letter threatening legal action against Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) ministers for accusing him of trying to stop the Delhi government's electricity subsidy for the poor.
In the past few weeks, Delhi Power Minister Atishi and Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj had been attacking Mr Saxena over what they claimed was his alleged attempt to derail the Delhi government's power subsidy programme by not clearing the necessary files.
The Lieutenant Governor, denying the allegations as "blatantly false, misleading, accusatory, libellous and defamatory", challenged the AAP government to show evidence to prove that he tried to stop the power subsidy, a widely popular scheme among the urban poor in the national capital.
"I write to you seeking accountability and responsibility with regards to unsubstantiated and false statements made by you and your colleagues in the government and party against me," Mr Saxena wrote in the letter to Mr Kejriwal.
"You are well aware that I have always been committed to power subsidy to the poor and have made the same amply clear in public domain, as indeed in writing on different files on different occasions," the Lieutenant Governor said.
"The omissions and commissions on your part have obviously been deliberate and with an aim to create an imaginary bogey to mislead the people for partisan gains... You are requested to furnish any paper or communication that establishes that the Lt Governor wants power subsidy to be stopped or is conspiring with officers or a political party to stop power subsidy, as is being openly alleged by your ministers and colleagues in the party," Mr Saxena said, adding failing to show evidence would lead to legal action for misleading the people.
On Friday last week, Atishi alleged that the subsidies will be stopped as the Lieutenant Governor was yet to clear the file to extend it. Mr Saxena's office, however, denied her allegation and said the file was cleared.
The Lieutenant Governor also asked why the decision was kept pending till April 4 went the deadline was April 15, and why the file was sent to him only on April 11.
The power subsidy matter was the latest flashpoint between Mr Saxena and the Kejriwal government. AAP leaders have often taken a swipe at the Lieutenant Governor for allegedly trying to harass them on the instructions of the BJP-led central government. Other non-BJP states including West Bengal and Tamil Nadu have alleged the same, with the showdowns reaching the assembly.

Chinese Man Arrested Over Blasphemy Charges In Pakistan
A Chinese worker was charged with blasphemy in northern Pakistan after angry workers surrounded his office accusing him of insulting the Prophet Mohammad, then stormed a police station to try to find him, officials said.
Police moved in as crowds gathered at the Dasu hydropower project in Kohistan district on Sunday afternoon and officers took the man to a safer location, police official Naseer-ud-Din Khan said.
Hundreds gathered again on Monday morning and stormed the main district police station, believing the man was hiding in the building, Mr Khan added.
But officials, fearing the man might be attacked, had moved him to another district by military helicopter, Mr Khan said. The man was charged and had so far declined to give a statement, police officials said.
Blasphemy is a crime under Pakistani law that can be punishable with death.
No one has ever been executed for it in Pakistan, but scores of people have been lynched after being accused of the crime, including a 23-year-old man in eastern Pakistan in February and a Sri Lankan factory manager in 2021.
Mr Khan said the crowd attacked the police station as officers were preparing the prosecution paperwork on Monday. "The mob dispersed only after they were shown a copy of the case registered on blasphemy charges," he said.
Rights groups say hundreds of people are languishing in prison accused of blasphemy as judges delay trials, fearing retribution against themselves.
A suicide attack on a bus killed nine Chinese workers from the same hydropower site in 2021.

New SOPs For Journalists Soon After Atiq Ahmed's Killers Posed As Mediapersons
On the direction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Ministry of Home Affairs has decided to prepare Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the safety of journalists in the wake of three assailants, posing as mediapersons, killing gangster Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf, sources said.
The MHA, under the leadership of the Prime minister and guidance of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, will prepare the SOPs for the safety and security of journalists, they said.
The step is being taken after the three attackers killed gangster-turned-politician Ahmed and his brother Ashraf in Prayagraj Saturday night while they were speaking to reporters, they said.
The two brothers were shot dead at point-blank range by the three men posing as journalists in the middle of a media interaction on Saturday night while police personnel were escorting them to a medical college for a checkup.

79 Arrested For Clashes In Odisha's Sambalpur, Internet Remains Suspended
The Odisha Police has arrested 79 people for their alleged involvement in the violence in Sambalpur city during Hanuman Jayanti celebrations, officials said Sunday.
The situation is gradually limping back to normalcy in Sambalpur, where curfew is still continuing along with suspension of internet, they said. Sambalpur SP B Gangadhar said there has been no report of any untoward incident since the curfew was ordered in the city early Saturday.
A number of accused persons are still on the run, police said.
"While 26 people were arrested in connection with the stone pelting incident during bike rally on April 12, 53 others have been taken into custody for violence and arson during the procession on April 14," Mr Gangadhar said.
"It appears to be a pre-planned violence as per the indications received so far. More arrests will be made in future," he said.
The state government has suspended internet services in Sambalpur district till 10 am of April 17, the SP said.
Odisha DGP Sunil K Bansal said stringent action will be taken against those involved in the violence, and expressed hope that normalcy will be restored in a day or two in the city.
The prohibitory orders, however, were relaxed for students and candidates of various recruitment examinations on Sunday, police said.
Meanwhile, Union minister Giriraj Singh said it is unfortunate that the state government has been adopting an "appeasement policy" while dealing with the case.
"The government is shielding some people involved in the violence," he alleged.
Countering him, BJD leader and MLA Amar Satpathy said the government has taken action as per the law.

Bodies Of Atiq Ahmed, Brother Taken To Burial Ground After Post-Mortem
The bodies of gangster-politician Atiq Ahmad and his brother Khalid Azeem alias Ashraf were handed over to the family members after post-mortem on Sunday for performing the funeral rites.
The bodies of Ahmad and Ashraf were taken to the Kasari Masari graveyard in an ambulance, in which an elderly person of the family was also seen.
Atiq's son Asad, an accused in the Umesh Pal murder case who fell to police bullets, was buried at the same graveyard here on Saturday.
The graveyard is located in Ahmad's ancestral village and his parents were also laid to rest there.
There is heavy police presence at the graveyard and only a few distant relatives of the dead brothers and locals are present inside the burial ground.
Asad was the third of the five sons of Ahmad and was on the run since Umesh Pal's killing on February 24.
Hours after Asad was interred, Ahmad (60) and Ashraf, who were in handcuffs, were shot dead at point-blank range by three men posing as journalists when they were answering queries from reporters while being escorted by police personnel to a medical college here for a checkup.
