What If You Dont Link Your Aadhaar And PAN Today? Explained

All taxpayers in the country are required to link their PAN with Aadhaar. The Income Tax Department had extended the deadline to link the two documents from March 31 to June 30, today. Now those who fail to link their PAN and Aadhaar today will have to face “certain repercussions”.

Who all are required to link PAN and Aadhaar?

According to the Income Tax Department, the Income Tax Act 1961 requires all taxpayers, who have been allotted a PAN card as on July 1, 2017, and are eligible to obtain Aadhaar Number, to get their PAN and Aadhaar linked on or before June 30. Those who are exempted from linking the documents include NRIs, non-citizens of India, those aged above 80 years, and residents of Meghalaya, Assam, and Jammu and Kashmir. According to officials, the linking of PAN and Aadhaar is important to curb tax evasion.

What if you do not link PAN and Aadhaar today?

The IT Department has said that taxpayers who do not link their PAN and Aadhaar by June 30 will have to face consequences next month. PAN cards of such people will become inoperative and no refund will be made against PANs not linked to Aadhaar. In addition, interest will also not be payable on the refund for the period during which the PAN remains inoperative.

Tax deducted at source (TDS) and tax collected at source (TCS) will be deducted or collected at a higher rate for those who do not link their PAN and Aadhaar.

Investors are also required to link their PAN and Aadhaar. According to a circular issued by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), “Since  PAN  is  the key identification  number and  part  of  KYC  requirements for  all transactions  in  the securities market, all SEBI registered  entities  and Market Infrastructure Institutions (MIIs) are required to ensure valid KYC for all participants”.

The circular stated that all existing investors must link their PAN with Aadhaar to continue smooth transactions in the securities market and to avoid consequences. Restrictions could be imposed on securities and other transactions until the PAN and Aadhaar are linked.

Taxpayers belonging to the exempt category will not face any of these consequences for not linking the documents.

What after PAN becomes inoperative?

As per the Income Tax Department, PAN can be made operative again in 30 days “upon intimation of Aadhaar to the prescribed authority after payment of a fee of Rs.1,000”.

How to check PAN-Aadhaar link status?

You can visit the Income Tax e-filing portal and select Quick Links. Then click on Link Aadhaar status and enter your PAN and Aadhaar numbers on the new page. If your PAN and Aadhaar are linked, a message will pop up – “Your PAN is already linked to given Aadhaar”. Otherwise, the pop-up will read, “PAN not linked with Aadhaar. Please click on 'Link Aadhaar' to link your Aadhaar with PAN”.

A person is required to pay Rs 1,000 to link PAN and Aadhaar today.

Overall Average Airfare On Many Routes Decline: Aviation Regulator's Data

The overall average price of air tickets on various routes, including Delhi-Mumbai, has declined, according to an analysis based on the data compiled by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

In recent times, there has been a steep surge in airfares on certain routes, especially in the wake of the suspension of operations by Go First.

Among 10 routes, the average airfares on the Delhi-Mumbai route dropped 74 per cent on June 29 compared to June 6, as per the data compiled by the DGCA's Tariff Monitoring Unit.

During the same period, the decline was 70 per cent on the Delhi-Pune route, 72 per cent on the Delhi-Ahmedabad route and 36 per cent on the Delhi-Srinagar route.

However, ticket prices rose on some routes during the comparative period.

The average fares on Mumbai-Delhi and Pune-Delhi routes rose 23 per cent and 17 per cent.

Earlier this month, airfares on various routes had surged, following which Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia had asked representatives of airlines to self-regulate the ticket prices as well as put in place a mechanism to ensure reasonable pricing.

Airfares are not regulated in the country, and broadly, they depend on the supply-demand situation.

On June 12, Scindia said fares have been reduced by up to 60 per cent and are likely to decline further on certain routes that had seen an increase in fares.

The DGCA is also closely monitoring the situation.

Sikh Body SGPC Opposes Uniform Civil Code Raises Concern Of Culture Loss

Sikh body SGPC chief Harjinder Singh Dhami today opposed the Uniform Civil Code, citing concerns about the potential erosion of traditions, culture, and the unique identity of minorities.

His remarks came a day after the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) said that the implementation of Uniform Civil Code throughout the country would have an adverse impact on minority and tribal communities.

Speaking to the media here, chief Dhami said the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), an top gurdwara body, has taken a firm stand against the UCC and opposed its implementation.

On the issue of the Sikh Gurdwaras (Amendment) Bill, 2023, chief Dhami criticised the AAP government in Punjab for interfering in religious matters, saying it was a "direct violation of the rights of the Sikhs".

The SGPC has already passed a resolution, opposing the state government's meddling in Sikh religious affairs, said chief Dhami.

Chief Dhami further said the SGPC has plans to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah to take up the issue of the Sikh Gurdwaras (Amendment) Bill, 2023 with him.

The Punjab Assembly on June 20 passed the Sikh Gurdwaras (Amendment) Bill, 2023, which is aimed at ensuring free telecast of Gurbani from the Golden Temple.

The SGPC has been opposing the Sikh Gurdwaras (Amendment) Bill, 2023, claiming that the Sikh Gurdwaras Act, 1925 can only be amended by Parliament.

To a question on the broadcasting of 'Gurbani' from the Golden Temple, chief Dhami said it was not solely about a specific channel, but rather it was the "undue interference" of the state government in Sikh religious matters.

He emphasised the SGPC's commitment to safeguarding the Sikh community's rights and heritage, stating that they would not permit any amendments to the Sikh Gurdwaras Act of 1925.

Asked about the possible launch of a YouTube channel for broadcasting 'gurbani kirtan', chief Dhami said a sub-committee was looking into it, he said.

Last month, chief Dhami had said that open tenders would soon be called for the broadcast of a sacred hymn. A five-member committee was also formed for this purpose.

Currently, Gurbani is broadcast from the Sikh shrine by PTC, a private channel often linked to the Badal family. The current agreement with G-Next Media Private Limited (PTC Channel) for the broadcast of Gurbani will expire in July.

The SGPC also raised concerns about the safety and security of Sikhs residing in Pakistan, urging the government to take proactive measures to protect the well-being of their fellow Sikhs in the neighbouring country.

Chief Dhami was here to attend 'Nagar Kirtan' (religious procession) held at Gurdwara Bahadurgarh Sahib.

CAT Told To Expeditiously Decide On Reduction Of Cut-Off Marks For UPSC's CSAT Exam

The Delhi High Court asked the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) to expeditiously decide a plea seeking reduction of cut off marks from 33 per cent to 23 per cent for qualifying part 2 of the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) conducted by the UPSC as part of the Civil Services Examination, 2023.

A vacation bench of Justices C Hari Shankar and Manoj Jain refused to grant any interim relief and disposed of the plea filed by a group of aspirants challenging the CAT's June 9 order denying them any interim relief.

"CAT is requested to decide the OA (original application) as expeditiously as possible. Needless to say, in accordance with principles of natural justice. The petition is disposed of," the bench said.

Seeking interim relief, the petitioners submitted the matter is urgent in nature and staying the result will be in public interest as lakhs of other candidates are also affected.

Advocate Saaket Jain, appearing for the petitioner candidates, submitted that the CAT, before which their plea is already pending, has kept the matter for hearing on July 6, and prayed that it be directed to hear the petition expeditiously.

On June 9, the CAT had issued notice on the plea seeking reduction in the cut off marks but refused to grant any interim relief, and listed the matter for hearing on July 6.

The candidates then approached the high court challenging the tribunal's order and said the matter will become infructuous by July 6. The petition prayed that the UPSC be restrained from acting any further on the prelims results declared on June 12.

The high court, however, said the prayer to stay the entire examination and the recruitment process cannot be granted.

"The tribunal has not thrown out your case. It has issued notice on your OA. The matter is now listed on July 6... no court will pass an order staying the entire CSE 2023. It is an ex-facie prayer which cannot be granted. There are plethora of judgments of the Supreme Court," the bench said.

It said even if hundreds of students go to court, the balance of convenience can never be on staying the entire result of civil services examination.

The petitioners' counsel said it was not their case that the questions were difficult but that they were out of syllabus, and alleged the UPSC has acted in an arbitrary manner, affecting lakhs of students.

The bench, however, said the CAT has not dismissed their plea and any adverse observation by the court will affect the petitioners' case at the tribunal.

It said there are decisions which say that courts should not look at question papers.

The petitioners are aggrieved over Paper 2 CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test), saying this year the UPSC came up with a paper which not only contained questions that were out of syllabus but which were also asked in IIT JEE Advance and CAT examinations.

The plea said according to the syllabus provided by the UPSC, a candidate needs to prepare for basic maths, numeracy and data interpretation of Class 10 level. The questions asked cannot be answered by anyone who possesses only basic knowledge of mathematics (Class 10 level).

The petition claimed the question paper was "discriminatory" for various categories of candidates from arts and humanities and other non-technical backgrounds, those from humble background who cannot afford special coaching, candidates from rural areas and even those from cities who have not studied higher level mathematics

Kerala Received 65% Deficit Rainfall So Far During Monsoon: Weather Office

Kerala, the gateway of the monsoon into the mainland of the country, has received deficient rainfall so far, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The southwest monsoon arrived in Kerala on June 8, nearly a week after its normal onset date of June 1.

Compared to the normal south-west monsoon rainfall for the corresponding period, Kerala has had a deficit of 65 per cent from the normal rainfall.

The regional meteorological department, Kerala, however, said that the south-westerly winds are getting stronger, and more rainfall is expected in the coming days.

"We have received only minus 65 per cent rainfall in Kerala. All the districts in Kerala have received below-normal rainfall this season so far," Dr VK Mini, director in charge, IMD, Kerala, told Press Trust of India.

She said due to various factors, like the cyclones that formed over the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, the south-west monsoon had a slow pick-up and slow progression.

"The pick-up started only last week. Now we are witnessing a faster progression. So we expect more rain in the coming days," she said.

There is an upper air cyclonic formation over the northeast Arabian Sea, and an offshore trough is moving towards Kerala from South of Gujarat, strengthening the south-westerly winds.

A low pressure area that formed over the Bay of Bengal two days ago is now over Chhattisgarh and moving towards the west, north-west direction. All these factors are strengthening the monsoon south-westerly winds," Dr Mini said.

Widespread rainfall is predicted over Kerala and Lakshadweep for the coming days, she added.

"UK Prepared For A Range Of Scenarios In Russia": Rishi Sunak

Britain is prepared for a range of scenarios in Russia, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said on Monday, noting the potentially destabilising impact of the tensions between the Wagner Group and President Vladimir Putin.

Putin faced an unprecedented challenge to his authority over the weekend from an abortive mutiny by heavily armed mercenary fighters from the Wagner Group.

The extraordinary events left governments, both friendly and hostile to Russia, groping for answers to what could happen next in the country with the world's largest nuclear arsenal.

Rishi Sunak said Britain was monitoring events carefully.

"It's too early to predict with certainty what the consequences of this might be, but of course we are prepared as we always would be for a range of scenarios," Rishi Sunak told reporters.

"It's a situation that we've been analysing and monitoring for some time because we're aware of the potentially destabilising impact of Russia's illegal war in Ukraine and indeed, the tensions between the Wagner Group and the Putin regime."

Teen Who Lost Legs After Being Hit By Car Is Suing US City

A teenage volleyball player from Tennessee, US, who lost both of her legs after she was hit by a car is suing the Missouri city of St.Louis and two drivers. A lawsuit was filed on behalf of Janae Edmondson, 18, on Tuesday, according to People.

Ms Edmondson was walking to a hotel in downtown St Louis with her family when an unthinkable accident occurred. A driver drove through a yield sign and struck a car and that car struck Janae Edmondson, according to Go Fund Me.

The driver responsible for the accident, 21-year-old Daniel Riley was arrested shortly after the incident. He was charged with three counts of assault. Authorities said Riley who was out on bond from another case, sped through a yield sign at the intersection and hit another car. The second car crashed into Edmondson, causing both of her legs to be amputated, Fox News reported.

The lawsuit states that Ms Edmondson "had her bright future brutally ripped away," and called the accident "completely preventable."

The lawsuit seeks damages of more than $25,00 from Riley, his mother, the city and the driver of the other vehicle. The suit says Riley's mother allowed him to borrow her car despite his "habitual recklessness," reported ABC News.

The lawsuit also blames the city for failing to maintain a safe intersection. It said that the yield sign that the lawsuit claims was inadequate because buildings blocked the view of oncoming traffic.

Mr Riley remains in jail as he awaits trials in his case.
