Horses Dragged Behind Pickup Truck In US, Driver Ignores Calls To Stop

Animal cruelty is a serious issue around the world. It is estimated that billions of animals are abused and neglected every year. This digital age has helped highlight this issue prominently. Periodically, videos and images surface, vividly showcasing instances of animal abuse perpetrated by individuals who unfortunately regard it as routine and acceptable behavior.

In a recent incident that gained widespread attention on the internet, a video emerged showing a distressing scene in Utah, United States. The footage captured the sight of two horses being forcibly dragged behind a pickup truck along a residential street.

This shocking incident has ignited outrage and calls for immediate action to address such acts of cruelty and ensure the welfare of animals.

"It was just horrible to watch! The driver didn't stop until he was at the stop sign, even when others were yelling at him to stop," Amberly Powers, who provided the home security camera footage to the news media, said.

The incident happened on September 8 in Farmington.

Powers says she is the woman in the video with the long ponytail, and the only thing the driver said to her as she got up close to take additional photos was, "This horse is stubborn!"

According to Fox News, her neighbour, Don Evans, also caught footage of the livestock tied to the back of the vehicle. He was not home at the time but was asked by a neighbour to review his surveillance cameras.

"Sick to my stomach, outraged, in disbelief," he told KUTV after seeing the footage of one of the horses struggling to keep up with the pace of the truck. "I have not seen this amount of reckless disregard in my life; it's horrendous, and there's a lot of outrage in the community over this."

"Importing Cheetahs, Letting Them Die...": BJP's Varun Gandhi Attacks Own Party Again

In yet another attack on his own party and the Centre, BJP MP Varun Gandhi has termed bringing cheetahs from Africa and allowing them to die "cruelty and negligence", and called for a focus on conserving India's endangered species.

Mr Gandhi's remarks come in the backdrop of nine cheetah deaths in Madhya Pradesh's Kuno National Park in a span of five months, and amid reports of the next batch of the big cats being brought from South Africa and introduced into the state's Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary.

As part of Project Cheetah, the first batch of the big cats, brought from Namibia, had been released in Kuno National Park by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his birthday -  September 17 - last year. Sunday will be the first anniversary of Project Cheetah.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Mr Gandhi tagged a report on the another batch of cheetahs and said, "Importing cheetahs from Africa and allowing nine of them to die in a foreign land is not just cruelty, it's an appalling display of negligence. We should focus on conserving our own endangered species and habitats rather than contributing to the suffering of these magnificent creatures."

"This reckless pursuit of exotic animals must end immediately, and we should prioritise the welfare of our native wildlife instead," his post said.

This is far from the first time that the MP from Uttar Pradesh's Pilibhit has attacked his own party or a government headed by the BJP. At an event in Uttar Pradesh last month, he had asked people not to disturb a sadhu (ascetic) and said nobody knows "when 'maharaaj ji' will become the chief minister".

The ascetic's phone had started ringing, but Mr Gandhi had stopped BJP workers from asking him to switch it off.  "Please do not not stop him, never know when 'maharaaj ji' will become the chief minister. Then what will happen to us?" he had been quoted as saying by news agency PTI. The joke was seen as a dig at the government in Uttar Pradesh.

Kuno National Park has seen the reintroduction of 20 adult cheetahs since September last year, and four cubs have been born there since then. Nine of the cheetahs, including three cubs, had died in a span of five months till early August this year.

Some experts had attributed the cheetah deaths to the use of sub-standard radio collars, but the government had dismissed the charge as "speculation and hearsay without scientific evidence".

Hearing a petition on the deaths, the Supreme Court had said last month that there was no reason to question the government on the moves being made to reintroduce cheetahs in India.

In an interview with PTI, Project Cheetah head SP Yadav said that the next batch of cheetahs will be imported from South Africa and introduced in the Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary, which will be ready to welcome them by the end of the year.

Now, New Delhi Station To Airport In Just 15 Minutes By Metro

In a major feat, trains will run at a speed of 120 kmph on the Airport Line of the Delhi Metro from Sunday onwards, the officials said.

This increase in the speed of trains on India's fastest metro corridor gradually from 90 kmph to 120 kmph has been made possible by "meticulous planning and time-bound implementation by DMRC's engineers in consultation with a number of other government agencies and domain experts," they said.

"From September 17 onwards, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is going to operate the Airport Express Line at a massive speed of 120 kilometres per hour," the DMRC said in a statement.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the first phase of India International Convention and Expo Centre (IICC), named YashoBhoomi, in Dwarka and also the extension of Delhi Metro's Airport Express Line from Dwarka Sector 21 to a new metro station at Dwarka Sector 25 on Sunday.

The extension of Delhi Metro's Airport Express Line from Dwarka Sector 21 to Yashobhoomi Dwarka Sector 25 will become operational from 3 pm onwards on September 17, officials said on Friday.

Sources on Saturday said the enhanced speed is likely to be implemented on this line after the inauguration of the extension of the Airport Line.

The current operational Airport Express Line spans from the New Delhi metro station to Dwarka Sector 21 station.

The total journey from New Delhi to Yashobhoomi Dwarka Sector-25 will take about 21 minutes.

Earlier, the travel time between New Delhi and Dwarka Sector 21 was approximately 22 minutes, and now it has reduced to around 19 minutes between these two stations, leading to a saving of three minutes.

The approximate travel time between New Delhi and Terminal 3 of the Delhi Airport will be about 15 minutes and 30 seconds. Earlier, it was a little more than 18 minutes, the DMRC said.

To facilitate the movement of the trains at such a high speed, over 2.6 lakh tension clamps were replaced on the entire corridor. The bulk of the work was carried out in the night time from 11 pm till 7 am to ensure minimal hindrance to the smooth operation of services. Over 100 workers were deployed at a time for this work, the statement said.

Before taking up this mammoth exercise, the efficacy of these clamps was checked on a kilometre-long trial track. Various measurements including vibration and stresses on rails were carried out using advanced instruments on this trial track before implementing the same on the main corridor, officials said.

The estimated timeline for the completion of this task was 18 months. However, the DMRC took the challenge and successfully ensured the completion of the work within just six months, it added.

A highly advanced system consisting of 3D accelerometers and strain censors was deployed for continuous measurement of vibrations and strains on the tracks at different speed levels. Oscillation monitoring was performed at speeds from 90 kmph to 120 kmph to ascertain smooth movement at higher speed levels, the DMRC said.

Tremendous efforts were put in by DMRC officials to analyse the measurement data at various speeds to understand the behaviour and response of the system, the officials said.

The signalling infrastructure also required verification of all software and safety certifications of the main system and the subsystems at such high speed. The interface testing with rolling stock and passenger information systems was also checked in detail, the statement said.

"The working of the Passenger Screen Doors (PSDs) in coordination with the movement of the train was also done. Extensive testing of all signalling equipment was conducted in a graded manner involving track, rolling stock, and traction for over two months," it added.

During the non-revenue hours, the overhead equipment (OHE) system was also made suitable for the movement of trains at 120 kmph. Eventually, after all these efforts, Delhi Metro increased the operational speed of Metro trains on the Airport Express Line from 90 kmph to 100 kmph on March 22 this year, the officials said.

The speed of the trains was further increased to 110 kmph on June 22, which shall be further increased to 120 kmph from tomorrow. The safety certification for the same has already been received earlier this month, the DMRC said.

Man Arrested For Breaking Into Royal Mews Near Buckingham Palace

A man has been arrested for trespassing after police were alerted to a person climbing into the Royal Mews close to Buckingham Palace, London's Metropolitan Police said Saturday.

At 1:25 am (0025 GMT) on Saturday morning, "officers at Buckingham Palace responded to a person climbing the wall and entering the Royal Mews", Met Police said.

"A 25-year-old man was detained by officers outside the stables in the Royal Mews," it said, adding that "At no point did the man enter Buckingham Palace or the palace gardens".

He was arrested for "trespassing on a protected site" and taken into custody at a London police station.

The Royal Mews, housing carriages and stables as well as modern cars, organises the road travel arrangements for King Charles III and members of the royal family.

Intrusions have taken place before at royal premises, including Buckingham Palace.

One of the most famous security breaches was in 1982, when Michael Fagan managed to get into the bedroom of Queen Elizabeth II and spent 10 minutes talking to her before she could raise the alarm.

The unemployed decorator had had a few drinks and climbed up a drainpipe to enter the late queen's London residence.

He wandered into her bedroom and reportedly sat on the end of the bed for a chat with the perturbed monarch before a palace staffer lured him away with the promise of a shot of whisky.

Russia Denies Ukraine Has Retaken Village Near Bakhmut

Russia on Saturday denied a Ukrainian claim to have recaptured the devastated eastern village of Andriivka, a stepping stone on the way to the town of Bakhmut.

"The enemy did not abandon plans to capture the city of Artyomovsk [Bakhmut] of the Donetsk People's Republic and continued to conduct assault operations ... unsuccessfully trying to oust Russian troops from the population centres of Klishchiivka and Andriivka," the Russian defence ministry said in its daily briefing.

Andriivka lies south of largely-ruined Bakhmut, a mainly symbolic prize that Russian forces seized in May after the fiercest and longest battle since Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The Ukrainian General Staff on Friday also reported "partial success" near Klishchiivka, also south of Bakhmut.

Reuters was unable to verify the battlefield reports.

Iran Thwarts Mahsa Amini's Family From Marking Death Anniversary: Report

Iranian authorities on Saturday prevented the family of Mahsa Amini from holding a ceremony to commemorate the first anniversary of her death, confining her father to his home after briefly detaining him, rights groups said.

Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurd, died a few days after her arrest by religious police for allegedly violating the strict dress code for women in force since shortly after the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Her family says she died from a blow to the head but this is disputed by Iranian authorities.

Anger over her death rapidly expanded into weeks of taboo-breaking protests which saw women tearing off their mandatory headscarves in an open challenge to the Islamic republic's system of government under supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Mahsa Amimi's father Amjad Amini was detained while exiting the family home in the western town of Saqez and then released after being warned not to hold a memorial service at her graveside, the Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN), 1500tasvir monitor and Norway-based Iran Human Rights (IHR) said.

He was now not being allowed to leave the family home, with members of the security forces stationed outside, the groups added in separate statements.

"Amjad Amini is under house arrest... Security forces are preventing him from visiting his daughter's grave," said IHR.

Official news agency IRNA described the reports of the arrest as "false", saying they were aimed at "inciting the population to protest".

Amjad Amini was already summoned by intelligence officials last week after his announcement he planned to hold a memorial ceremony. One of Amini's uncles, Safa Aeli, was detained in Saqez on September 5 and remains in custody.

There was no sign of the ceremony taking place at her grave at the Aichi cemetery in Saqez, with the rights groups saying security forces had blocked access to the site.

'Chokehold on dissent'

The protests sparked by Amini's death lost momentum after several months in the face of a crackdown that saw security forces kill 551 protesters, according to IHR, and arrest more than 22,000, according to Amnesty International.

Iranian authorities say dozens of security personnel were also killed in what they describe as "riots" incited by foreign governments and hostile media.

Seven men have been executed after being convicted in protest-related cases.

Campaigners say the authorities have renewed their crackdown in the runup to the anniversary, putting pressure on relatives of those killed in the protests in a bid to stop them speaking out.

New York-based Human Rights Watch said family members of at least 36 people killed or executed in the crackdown had been interrogated, arrested, prosecuted or sentenced to prison over the past month.

"Iranian authorities are trying to impose a chokehold on dissent to prevent public commemoration of Mahsa Jina Amini's death in custody," said HRW's senior Iran researcher, Tara Sepehri Far.

Kurdish-focused group Hengaw said people in western Iran were expressing discontent through a general strike, with shops shut down in a dozen towns and cities including Saqez.

Persian-language channels based outside Iran, including Iran International, broadcast footage of residents shouting "Death to the dictator" and the main protest slogan of "Woman, Life, Freedom" from apartment blocks in Tehran and its satellite city of Karaj overnight.

In a symbolic move, Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi met on Friday with families of security personnel killed during the protests while on a visit to the northeastern city of Mashhad, state media said.

'Doubling down'

While some women are still seen walking in public without headscarves, particularly in wealthy, traditionally liberal areas of north Tehran, the conservative-dominated parliament is currently considering a draft law that would impose far stiffer penalties for non-compliance.

"The Islamic republic is doubling down on repression and reprisals against its citizens and seeking to introduce new and more draconian laws that severely restrict further the rights of women and girls," said Sara Hossain, the chair of the UN fact-finding mission set up to investigate the crackdown.

Under the slogan "Say her name!", Iranian emigres are expected to hold commemorative rallies, with large demonstrations expected in Paris and Toronto.

On the eve of the anniversary, Iran's arch-foe the United States and its Western allies including Britain and the European Union imposed new sanctions on the Islamic republic over its protest crackdown.

Announcing the measures, US President Joe Biden led international calls in solidarity with Iranians on the anniversary of Amini's death.

"Iranians alone will determine the fate of their country, but the United States remains committed to standing with them," he said.

Iran's foreign ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani slammed the Western countries' "illegal and undiplomatic actions" in a statement late Friday.
