Railways To Roll Out Hydrogen-Powered Trains For Heritage Routes: Minister

The railways will roll out hydrogen-powered trains on its narrow gauge heritage routes by December, making them "completely green".

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said Tuesday the trains will be on the lines of those running in China and Germany.

As a pilot project, the railways is manufacturing a prototype of hydrogen fuel-based train at the Northern Railway workshop. It would be test-run on the Sonipat-Jind section in Haryana.

"We will roll out the hydrogen trains on the heritage routes from December 2023. This will mean that these heritage routes will go completely green," said Vaishnaw.

Worldwide, there is a bid to replace diesel-powered locomotives with hydrogen-propelled engines wherever full electrification is difficult or too expensive as it offers an emission-free, quiet alternative that can be economically competitive.

Germany's Coradia iLint is the world's first passenger train powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, which produces electrical power for traction. This zero-emission train emits low levels of noise, with exhaust being only steam and condensed water. This train can run 1000 km at a speed of 140kmph at one go. This train was being tested in Germany since 2018.

China too recently launched Asia's first hydrogen-powered trains for the Urban Railways. It gets a range of 600 km on a single tank, with a top speed of 160 kmph, according to reports.

Indian Railways' heritage routes, which primarily run on diesel are -- Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, Nilgiri Mountain Railway, Kalka Shimla Railway, Matheran Hill Railway, Kangra Valley, Bilmora Waghai and Marwar-Devgarh Madriya. All are narrow gauge.

"Jungle Raj" Has Returned In Bihar: BJP Chief JP Nadda

BJP president JP Nadda today alleged that "Jungle Raj" has returned to Bihar, alluding to the formation of the 'Mahagathbandhan' (Grand Alliance) government in the state around five months ago.

Addressing party workers in Muzaffarpur district's Paru, which falls under Vaishali Lok Sabha constituency, Mr Nadda claimed there has been a complete breakdown in law and order in the state after the Nitish Kumar-led JD(U) formed the government with Congress and RJD.

"Since the formation of the 'Mahagathbandhan' government in Bihar, not a day goes without hearing about murders, loot, kidnapping, rape and other crimes. 'Jungle Raj' has returned to the state. There is a complete breakdown in law and order in the state," he said.

"Nitish Kumar betrayed the people of Bihar. His decision to form an alliance with the RJD and other parties is against the mandate of the people. The people of the state will give a befitting reply to Kumar in the coming polls. The 'Mahagathbandhan' government will be thrown out by voters in the next election," the BJP president added.

Nitish Kumar had formed the government with the Opposition parties after ending its coalition with BJP in August last year.

JP Nadda was earlier in the day welcomed by BJP workers at Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport in Patna.

He is expected to chair a meeting with state BJP leaders in the evening before leaving for Delhi.

Car Hits 3 Students On New Year's Eve In Greater Noida; One Critical

A car hit three engineering students, leaving one girl student seriously injured in Uttar Pradesh's Greater Noida on New Year's eve, police said on Tuesday.

The incident pertains to December 31, 2022, car-borne youths hit three engineering students from the rear, near the Alpha 2 bus stand.

The girl with serious injuries is undergoing treatment in the hospital, while the other two students have been discharged, police said.

"On December 31, 2022, at 9 pm, three students were heading towards Delta from the Alpha 2 bus stand. Meanwhile, an 'unidentified' vehicle hit them from behind. The passersby immediately rushed the injured to the Hospital. Two students, with normal injuries, have been discharged, while a girl student was gravely injured, her treatment is going on at Kailash Hospital. The victims' family members reached the hospital and met with police personnel," Greater Noida Additional Deputy Commissioners of Police, Dinesh Kumar said.

"The hospital administration has assured full cooperation," he added.

The police have started a search operation to nab the accused.

A case has been registered. Three teams have been tasked, from Beta 2 Police Station, to nab the accused. We'll examine the CCTV footage and the incident will be unveiled soon," the senior police officer said.

Further information is awaited in the case.

Earlier, a 20-year-old woman was killed in the early hours of New Year in the national capital after her scooty was hit by a car and she was reportedly dragged for several kilometres under the vehicle on the city's roads.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has ordered a detailed enquiry into the matter by IPS Officer Shalini Singh who is currently posted as the Special Commissioner of the Delhi Police's Economic Offences Wing (EOW).

In a significant development in the Kanjhawala case, the Delhi Police have found a CCTV footage in which the deceased woman Anjali and her friend, identified by police as Nidhi, were seen coming out of a hotel at around 1.30 am on January 1.

CCTV footage accessed by ANI shows both the women leaving the hotel on a scooty with Anjali on the pillion seat and Nidhi riding. The other woman, who was traced out by police during the investigation, has been identified by the police as Nidhi a friend of the deceased Anjali.

In the CCTV footage from outside the hotel, Anjali could be seen wearing a pink coloured jacket while Nidhi could be spotted in a Red Jacket.

According to the police, during investigations, Nidhi revealed that after covering a distance, Anjali told her that she will ride the scooty following which Nidhi sat on the pillion seat.

"What Pothole?" Highway Body Counters Chief Minister On Rishabh Pant Crash

There were no potholes on the road where cricketer Rishabh Pant's car met with a near-fatal accident, a National Highways Authority of India official said on Monday.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, after meeting the cricketer at a hospital in Dehradun on Sunday, had said Pant told him that his car crashed while he was trying to avoid a pothole on the highway.

However, NHAI Roorkee Division Project Director Pradeep Singh Gusain told PTI, "There were no potholes on the road where the accident occurred. The road where the car crashed is a little narrow due to a canal (Rajwaha) adjacent to the highway. The canal is used for irrigation." Gusain also denied the accident site was repaired by the NHAI and the "potholes" were fixed, even though some pictures of workmen purportedly mending a stretch of the highway went viral late on Sunday evening.

Dhami had told reporters after meeting Pant at the Max Hospital that the cricketer had lost control of the vehicle while trying to avoid a pothole or something black. "He (Pant) said the car swerved across the road while trying to avoid a pothole or something black," Dhami told reporters after meeting the cricketer at the hospital.

Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) Director Shyam Sharma, who met Pant on Saturday, had also said quoting the keeper-batter that the accident occurred when he was trying to negotiate a pothole in the early hours of Friday.

The massive accident had occurred at around 5.30 am on Friday when Pant's luxury car hit a road divider near Roorkee in Haridwar district and burst into flames causing multiple injuries to the cricketer who had a miraculous escape.

Old Video Shows Scary Sinkhole In Kenya Swallowing Everything In Its Path

An old video of a tiny sinkhole swallowing everything in its path has resurfaced on social media, leaving people in disbelief. The sinkhole initially drew in water from a large puddle before it began eating up everything in its path. From then on, it began to rapidly swallow bales of long grass and huge chunks of land.

The 37-second clip was posted by the Twitter handle @weirdterrifying, with a caption that reads, ''Somewhere in Kenya.''

Since being shared on Twitter, the video has garnered more than 90 lakh views, around 14,000 retweets, and 88,000 likes. 

One user commented on the video and wrote, ''Yeah, I think that was an episode of Stranger Things.'' Another commented, ''This is what they call a sinkhole. Unpublished geographers deemed this to be an unbelievable phenomenon of plants rebelling against humanity's deeds against them. The pesticides etc they're regrouping so watch out for the plantageddon that's coming your way.''

A third wrote, ''Imagine standing directly above a bottomless pit, and filming in awe as it swallows everything around it at an increasing pace, and not recognizing the danger below your feet. Another joked saying, ''Mother Earth is making a smoothie.''

According to a Yahoo News report, the sinkhole formed in Kericho, a town in the highlands west of the Kenyan Rift Valley. The region where this fascinating natural phenomenon occurred is part of the East African Great Rift Valley, which is in the process of splitting the African plate into two separate plates. 

Owing to the fact that it is an active tectonic zone, it features various cracks, holes, and underground voids. After a spell of heavy rains, the overlying soil was eroded exposing the cracks and underground voids. This caused the runoff water to sip through the openings to fill up the spaces.

Shark Tank India Season 2: Meet The Six Judges Who Will Hear The Pitches

Shark Tank India's season 2 has started today. The show, which made its debut a year ago, was a hit among the audience and fans have been eagerly waiting for the next edition.

Shark Tank is a reality show where startups seek investments from established businessmen. The show is the Indian version of the Shark Tank show from the US, which is currently in its 14th season.

This time around though, some of the judges who were part of season 1 will not make an appearance. BharatPe founder Ashneer Grover and Mamaearth co-founder Ghazal Alagh are not a part of season 2.

Here are the six judges who will be a part of Shark Tank India Season 2:

Peyush Bansal

The Lenskart CEO, who was one of the fan favourites in season 1, will again be seen as a Shark on the show. The 37-year-old worked at Microsoft in the US before entering the eyewear retail business.

Lenskart, which was founded in 2010, is today valued at nearly $5 billion. (Rs 41,000 crore)

Vineeta Singh

Vineeta Singh, an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), shot into the limelight when she refused a Rs 1 crore per annum job offer immediately after passing out. She is the founder and CEO of Sugar Cosmetics, a brand that aims to revolutionise the skincare and makeup industry in India.

During season 1 of Shark Tank India, the 38-year-old often spoke about the problems that women startup founders face. Ms Singh said that it is often tougher for women to raise funds for their startups.

She is also an active runner and has participated in several marathons and ironman triathlon events.

Aman Gupta

Aman Gupta founded the electronics brand 'boAt' with an aim to make gadgets cool. The company started with colourful earphones and headphones at a time when most other companies were making black, white or grey ones.

boAt has been growing at 100% year-on-year and registered revenue of Rs 3,000 crore at the end of FY22.

Namita Thapar

Namita Thapar, at 21, became a chartered accountant. She then pursued her MBA and spent six years in the finance industry. After her successful stint in the US, Ms Thapar came back and joined her father at the helm of pharma giant, Emcure Pharmaceuticals.

When Ms Thapar joined Emcure, the company had a valuation of Rs 500 crore. Today, it is among one of the biggest pharma companies in the country and has a valuation of Rs 6,000 crore.
 
Namita Thapar is a huge fan of Amitabh Bachchan and has named her sons Jai and Veeru, inspired by the characters in the actor's hit movie 'Sholay'.

Anupam Mittal

Anupam Mittal is a seasoned entrepreneur and investor who is known for founding the matrimonial site Shaadi.com. He was among the early investors in several of the startups that have become household names today. These include BigBasket, Ola, Rapido and many more.

He claims to have invested in over 150 companies in the last 15 years.

Amit Jain

Amit Jain, making his debut on Shark Tank India, is currently the CEO of CarDekho.com. He and his brother got the idea after a visit to Auto Expo in 2008. In a LinkedIn post, Mr Jain said, "We set up a portal where people could come to find the right information and review cars before making the decision of buying."

Maharashtra Man Throws Newborn On Hospital Floor After Fight With Wife

A man was arrested for allegedly throwing his newborn son on the floor of a hospital in Maharashtra's Nagpur city after a fight with his wife, a police official said on Sunday.

The incident took place in Government Medical College and Hospital on Saturday evening and the child's condition is stable in the Intensive Care Unit of the facility, the Ajni police station official added.

"The Amravati-based accused used to suspect his wife's character since their marriage in 2020 and picked up an argument when he came to visit her after she gave birth to their son on December 30. In a fit of rage, he threw the infant on the floor," the official said.

"The 32-year-old man was pinned down by nurses and others in ward 46, where the incident took place. They then called police, who arrested the man for attempt to murder and voluntarily causing hurt," he said.
