Manik Saha Meets Governor, Stakes Claim To Form Government In Tripura

BJP leader Manik Saha on Monday evening met Governor Satyadeo Narain Arya to stake his claim to be the next chief minister of Tripura. 

Earlier in the day, Mr Saha was elected as the leader of the BJP legislature party and the next chief minister of the northeastern state at a meeting of the BJP legislative party held in Agartala on Monday.

A spokesperson of the BJP informed reporters after the meeting that the selection was unanimously endorsed by all MLAs of the party.

Earlier, there was speculation that Mr Saha, who was made the CM last year in a brand renewal exercise replacing Biplab Kumar Deb, may make way for Union minister Pratima Bhowmik as the chief minister of the sensitive border state.

The swearing-in of the new chief minister will be held on March 8. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to be present at the event.

In the recently held elections, the BJP won 32 seats of the 60-member Assembly while its ally- Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT) - won one seat.

Assam Chief Minister and NEDA head Himanta Biswa Darma had visited the state on Sunday to measure the water and held meetings with the Chief Minister and senior party colleagues on the possible formation of the next cabinet.

Party sources said, Mr Sarma also had a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi on Sunday over the composition of the cabinet and its leader to ensure a smooth transition.

BJP national president JP Nadda and Chief Ministers of several BJP-ruled states are expected to also join the swearing-in ceremony.

Video: 4 Tiger Cubs Found In Andhra House, Search On For Their Mother

Four healthy tiger cubs were found in a house at Gummadapuram village in Nandyala district on Monday morning and the forest department officials took them into their custody after receiving information.

The tigress is roaring and roaming within a radius of 2 km around the area coming under Kothapalli Mandal in Nandyala district, a forest official said.

The animal trackers managed to quickly go to the spot on discovering the cubs and cordoned off the area. The forest department has laid a good number of camera traps. The cubs are quite healthy and aged about three to four months, according to officials.

The officials are trying to reach out to the tigress in the next 24 or 48 hours. In the event, the mother takes the cubs back, it will be a good ending, otherwise the next call would be how to take the situation forward, Shanti Priya Pandey, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Wildlife (APCCF, WL) said.

"How the cubs reached there is still a bit of an enigma for us. I think the tigress could have been chased by a pack of wild dogs. In a hurry it could have left the cubs," Mr Pandey said.

"Do we rear them for some time and then take them to the zoo or have an in-situ kind of enclosure? That requires a lot of permissions from the NTCA. The protocol says that we need to form a committee, which is headed by the nominee of the chief wildlife warden, the NTCA nominee, the local field director....," she said, indicating that it is too early to give a definitive conclusion.

However, Mr Pandey said the forest officials are taking precautions to ensure that they don't leave a human imprint on the quartet, erasing the original wild imprint as the mother may sometimes reject.

The officials are following the protocol laid down by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) in handling orphaned or abandoned cubs.

According to the officer, the chances of survival are better for the cubs if they successfully return to the wild than staying in non-wilderness settings.

Though the department is assessing options on how to return the cubs, Mr Pandey said the behaviour of the mother is crucial.

12,000 Left Shelterless By Massive Fire At Rohingya Camp In Bangladesh

A fire destroyed 2,000 shelters at a Rohingya refugee camp in southeastern Bangladesh on Sunday, leaving around 12,000 people homeless, an official said.

The fire broke out around 2:45 pm (0845 GMT) at camp number 11 in Kutupalong, one of the world's largest refugee settlements, and rapidly engulfed the bamboo-and-tarpaulin shelters, Mijanur Rahman, Bangladesh's refugee commissioner, told AFP.

"Some 2,000 shelters have been burnt, leaving about 12,000 forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals shelterless," he said.

At least 35 mosques and 21 learning centres for the refugees were also destroyed, though there were no reports of any injuries or deaths, he added.

"My shelter was destroyed. (My shop) was also burnt," said Mamun Johar, a 30-year-old Rohingya man.

"The fire took everything from me, everything."

The blaze was brought under control in less than three hours.

It was not clear how the fire started. The authorities have ordered an investigation.

Fires are common in the camps where nearly one million Rohingya refugees live in squalid conditions.

Most of them fled a military crackdown in Myanmar's Rakhine state in 2017 and took refuge in Bangladesh.

A Bangladesh defence ministry report last month said that between January 2021 and December 2022, there were 222 fire incidents in the Rohingya camps -- including 60 cases of arson.

In March 2021, in what was the worst blaze in the Rohingya camps, at least 15 people were killed and some 50,000 were displaced after a fire engulfed an entire block in a settlement.

"Welcome To The World": Bill Gates, Wife Melinda Welcome Grandchild

Jennifer Gates, the eldest child of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, welcomed her first child with husband Nayel Nassar yesterday. She took to Instagram to announce the happy news.

Ms Gates posted a picture of the couple cradling the newborn without revealing the baby's face. She wrote in the caption, "Sending love from our healthy little family."

Bill and Melinda Gates' eldest daughter Jennifer tied the knot with Nayel Nassar in 2021 at her home in Westchester, New York. Nayel Nassar is an Egyptian equestrian.

In December 2022, Jennifer Gates revealed with a few pictures of a baby shower that they were expecting a baby girl. She wrote on Instagram, "Still on cloud nine after this baby shower. Thank you to all the people who have given me and baby girl so much love from near and far and @melindafrenchgates for hosting this incredible evening. Our hearts are all so full."

Prince Harry, Meghan Markle Invited To King Charles' Coronation: Report

Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markel have been invited to King Charles III's landmark coronation in May but are yet to decide whether to attend, reports said Sunday.

The California-based couple, who quit the British monarchy in 2020 amid growing internal tensions, "recently received email correspondence from His Majesty's office regarding the coronation", a spokesperson for them told Britain's Sunday Times.

"An immediate decision on whether the Duke and Duchess [of Sussex] will attend will not be disclosed by us at this time," their representative added, using their formal titles.

Buckingham Palace declined to comment.

The report comes with Harry, 38, increasingly estranged from his father, brother Prince William and the rest of the family, after exposing the extent of their fractured relations in a book, Netflix documentary and numerous interviews.

In his latest public comments, the prince reportedly told a trauma expert on Saturday that he has long felt "slightly different" to other British royals, came from a "broken home" and was trying not to pass "trauma" onto his children.

In his explosive memoir published in January, he claimed William attacked him during an argument about Meghan.

Meanwhile in last December's six-hour docuseries the couple again aired various grievances, having previously accused the royal family of racism over comments made about the skin tone of their unborn son.

It emerged this week that they are being evicted from their home on the family's Windsor estate, leaving them without a UK base from later this year.

The couple have made infrequent visits to the country since relocating to the United States, making a rare joint appearance in Britain following Queen Elizabeth II's death in September.

Charles, who ascended to the throne upon his mother's passing, will be formally crowned king in a pomp-filled ceremony on May 6 to be attended by dignitaries from around the world and watched by billions.

The celebrations will feature a star-studded concert, nationwide "big lunch" and volunteering initiative, as well as the traditional ceremony and royal processions.

The main May 6 coronation day also happens to be the fourth birthday of Harry and Meghan's son, Archie.

At Least 6 Killed In Oxygen Plant Explosion In Bangladesh

At least six people were killed and several injured on Saturday when a fire broke out following an explosion at an oxygen plant in southeastern Bangladesh, officials said.

The death count could rise as a rescue operation was ongoing at the plant at Sitakunda, 40 km (25 miles) from the southeastern port city of Chittagong, they added.

It was not immediately clear what caused the explosion, a fire service official said.

"Six bodies were recovered from the site," local government official Shahadat Hossain told Reuters, adding a rescue operation was continuing.

A huge bang was heard which shook an area with a radius of up to two kilometers, police official Nayhanul Bari said, quoting witnesses.

India Slams Islamic Nations' Group Over "Unwarranted" Kashmir References

India has assailed the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) for its "unwarranted references" to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and for allowing Pakistan to hijack and misuse its platform for carrying out Islamabad's "nefarious agenda" against New Delhi.

Exercising its right of reply at the High-Level Segment of 52nd session of the Human Rights Council, Seema Pujani, First Secretary, Permanent Mission of India in Geneva, outrightly rejected the reference to the statement made by the OIC representative.

"As regards the OIC statement, we reject the unwarranted references to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir," Ms Pujani said in a statement on Friday.

"The fact is that the entire territories of the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh have been, are and shall always be part of India. Pakistan is in illegal occupation of Indian territory," she said.

Instead of calling upon its member Pakistan to give up state-sponsored terrorism and to lift its occupation of Indian territory, the OIC has "let Pakistan hijack and misuse its platform for carrying out its nefarious agenda of engaging in malicious propaganda against India," Ms Pujani said.

India has previously criticised the Jeddah-based OIC for its attempt to interfere and meddle in India's internal affairs as completely unacceptable.

A spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs has said that the OIC has already lost its credibility by taking a blatantly communal, partisan and factually incorrect approach to issues.
