Pakistan Court Extends Bail To Imran Khan Till March 27 In 5 cases

A top Pakistani court today extended till March 27 the protective bail granted to former prime minister Imran Khan in five cases related to terrorism after he appeared before a two-member bench here.

The Lahore High Court (LHC) granted the extension of anticipatory bail to Khan after the 70-year-old chief of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf appeared before it amidst tight security.

Last week, Mr Khan was granted anticipatory bail in these five cases till March 24.

Of the five cases, one is related to the alleged attack on the judicial complex in Islamabad in which the government law officer objected that Khan should secure protective bail from Islamabad court.

Mr Khan told the LHC that last week on his appearance before a court in Islamabad police and FC (frontier constabulary) personnel fired teargas shells at his car and a clash took place between the PTI workers and police.

Besides, a plot was hatched to kill him there and that is why he returned to Lahore.

"My life is in danger I request the court to watch a video to see that I was waiting outside the judicial complex for 40 minutes as I am speaking the truth," he said and added he was facing a total of 140 cases out of which 40 were of terrorism and it is not humanly possible to appear in every case.

Mr Khan also informed the court that despite its order the Punjab police raided his house in Zaman Park Lahore and damaged it and stole several articles.

"Is there a law of the jungle or Pakistan being a banana republic," he remarked.

The LHC's two-member bench comprising Justice Tariq Salim Sheikh and Justice Anwaar Hussain accepted Khan's plea and extended his protective bail in all five cases, including in judicial complex attack one, till March 27.

The court also issued notices to the Punjab government and the Inspector General of Police, Punjab over the raid at Khan's house.

Mr Khan is facing 143 cases registered in different parts of the country since the Pakistan Muslim League-led government came to power in April last year.

'Hotel Rwanda' Hero's 25-Year Jail Sentence Commuted

Rwanda said on Friday it has commuted the 25-year jail sentence against ailing "Hotel Rwanda" hero Paul Rusesabagina, a fiercely outspoken critic of President Paul Kagame who has been held behind bars for more than 900 days.

The announcement comes less than two weeks after Kagame said Kigali was looking into resolving Rusesabagina's case, which has been a cause of concern for the West and global rights groups.

"Paul Rusesabagina and (co-defendant) Callixte Nsabimana have had their prison sentences commuted by presidential order, after consideration of their requests for clemency," government spokeswoman Yolande Makolo told AFP, without disclosing when they would be released.

The sentences of another 18 people convicted of terrorism offences alongside Rusesabagina in September 2021 have also been commuted, she said, highlighting the role of the United States and Qatar in the case.

But Makolo added: "No one should be under any illusion about what this means, as there is consensus that serious crimes were committed, for which they were convicted."

Rusesabagina, now 68, was jailed after a trial his supporters denounced as a sham that was plagued with irregularities. He has now been detained for 939 days, according to the Free Rusesabagina website.

His family has long warned about Rusesabagina's deteriorating health and has voiced fears he could die in prison.

A court in May 2022 upheld the sentences against Rusesabagina and most of his 20 co-defendants who were jailed for between three and 20 years for backing an armed group.

Rusesabagina was the manager of a Kigali hotel and is credited with helping to save about 1,200 lives during the 1994 genocide in which about 800,000 people were slaughtered, mainly Tutsis but also moderate Hutus.

Rusesabagina, whose story inspired the Oscar-nominated 2004 movie "Hotel Rwanda" starring US actor Don Cheadle, became a vocal critic of Kagame, founding his own party.

He emerged as a staunch government critic whose tirades against Kagame led him to be treated as an enemy of the state.

Rights groups accuse Rwanda -- ruled with an iron fist by Kagame since the end of the genocide -- of cracking down on free speech and opposition.

- 'Wrongfully detained' -

Speaking via videolink at the Global Security Forum in the Qatari capital Doha on March 13, Kagame had signalled a possible softening in Rwanda's approach on Rusesabagina's case.

"There is discussion, there is looking at all possible ways of resolving the issue without compromising the fundamental aspects of that case. I think there is going to be a way forward," he said at the time.

Makolo said on Friday that Rwanda "notes the constructive role of the US government in creating conditions for dialogue on this issue, as well as the facilitation provided by the State of Qatar".

Last year, the United States said Rusesabagina -- who holds Belgian citizenship and a US Green Card -- was "wrongfully detained" after a plane carrying him to Burundi was diverted to Rwanda in August 2020.

Also in 2022, the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention issued an opinion concluding that Rusesabagina had been "abducted" and that his detention was "arbitrary".

Rusesabagina's family said he was tricked into travelling from his US home with the promise of work in Burundi and that he has been tortured while in detention.

He was accused of supporting the National Liberation Front (FLN), a rebel group which is blamed for attacks inside Rwanda in 2018 and 2019 that killed nine people.

Rusesabagina denied any involvement in the attacks, but was a founder of the Rwandan Movement for Democratic Change (MRCD), an opposition group of which the FLN is seen as the armed wing.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and rights groups have raised the case with Rwanda, although Kagame said last year that the United States could not "bully" him into ordering a release.

Rusesabagina's family last year filed a $400 million lawsuit in the United States against Kagame, the Rwandan government and other figures for allegedly abducting and torturing him.

In 2005, Rusesabagina received the highest US civilian award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom

Backward Community Leaders Attack Rahul Gandhi For 'Modi Surname' Remark

BJP functionaries from the 'Teli' (oil-pressing) caste and leaders of the community on Thursday demanded an apology from Rahul Gandhi for his "defamatory" remarks against people with the 'Modi' surname, following his conviction by a Gujarat court.

They also warned of an agitation to protest Mr Gandhi's comments. The 'Modi' surname largely belongs to people from the 'Teli' community, who are part of the Other Backward Classes.

Maharashtra BJP president Chandrashekhar Bawankule condemned the former Congress president for "insulting" Telis and said it showed his "casteist" mindset.

It may be mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi also comes from an oil-pressing backward community from Gujarat.

"This is an insult to the OBCs in general and the community will show Gandhi his place," Mr Bawankule, who hails from the same community, told reporters in Mumbai.

Former Jharkhand chief minister Raghubar Das accused Mr Gandhi of crossing all limits of decency and asked him to tender an apology to the people of the country. The fact that Mr Gandhi has opted for bail shows that he has accepted his guilt, Mr Das told reporters in Jharkhand.

All India Teli Mahasangh's Ram Kumar said in a statement that Mr Gandhi has resorted to "abusing" others after his party lost power and added that people will teach him a lesson.

The Congress leader's comments have not dented the prime minister's popularity a bit and he should tender an apology, Ram Kumar said.

A court in Surat on Thursday sentenced Congress leader Mr Gandhi to two years in jail in a 2019 criminal defamation case filed against him over his "Modi surname" remarks.

The court of Chief Judicial Magistrate HH Varma, which held Mr Gandhi guilty under Indian Penal Code sections 499 and 500, also granted him bail and suspended the sentence for 30 days to allow him to appeal in a higher court, the Congress leader's lawyer Babu Mangukiya said.

Mr Gandhi was present in the court when the verdict was pronounced.

The case was filed against Mr Gandhi for his "how come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname" remarks, based on a complaint lodged by BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi.

The Lok Sabha MP from Wayanad made the remarks while addressing a rally at Kolar in Karnataka ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

"Futile Propaganda": India Slams Pakistan Over Kashmir Remark At UN

India has slammed Pakistan at the United Nations Human Rights Council during its right of reply where it warned Islamabad against spreading propaganda and attempts to foment communal disharmony in India.

The statement comes after Pakistan during the General Debate under Agenda item 4 at the UNHRC spoke about Jammu and Kashmir.

India called on Pakistan to focus on the safety, security and well-being of its minority communities instead of engaging in "futile propaganda" to create communal disharmony in India, PR Thulasidhass, Under Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs, Permanent Mission of India at the United Nations Human Rights Council.

"We call on Pakistan to focus on the safety, security and well-being of its minority communities instead of engaging in futile propaganda and attempting to foment communal disharmony in India," PR Thulasidhass said.

Mr Thulasidhass said that Pakistan's delegate referred to Jammu and Kashmir, which was, is and shall always remain integral part of India. He said that Jammu and Kashmir is marching towards peace and prosperity along with the rest of India.

PR Thulasidhass said that the world does not need lessons from Pakistan on democracy and human rights.

"The delegate of Pakistan referred to Jammu and Kashmir, which was, is and shall forever remain an integral part of India. Jammu and Kashmir is marching towards peace and prosperity along with the rest of India. This is despite Pakistan's repeated attempts to derail the process, through its active and sustained support to terror groups and its malicious disinformation campaign against India. FM of Pakistan has voiced Pakistan's frustration due to its failure in its malicious propaganda against India," he said.

Indian diplomat said that the democracy of India is mature enough to address any issues, including those instigated from outside. He said that minorities in Pakistan face blasphemy laws, systemic persecution, discrimination, denial of basic rights and freedoms, enforced disappearances and killings.

"The pluralistic democracy of India is mature enough to address any issues including those instigated from outside. India is a secular State and safeguarding the rights of minorities forming an essential core of our polity. What minorities receive in Pakistan are blasphemy laws, systemic persecution, discrimination, denial of basic rights and freedoms, enforced disappearances and killings," he said.

"The extent of religious discrimination is reflected in the loss of life, liberty and property on the mere accusations of blasphemy laws. Pakistan today stands out as the country having more cases of blasphemy than the rest of the world put together in the past few years," he added.

PR Thulasidhass asserted that Pakistan's contribution as a leading "exporter of terror and violence is unparalleled."

He questioned Pakistan over the presence of 150 UN-designated terrorists and terrorist identities listed by the UN. Indian diplomat at the UN Human Rights Council asked Pakistan if they can deny that Osama bin Laden was found living in Pakistan near a military academy.

"From a country where terrorists thrive in Pakistan and roam its streets with impunity, the world does not need lessons on democracy and human rights. Pakistan's contribution as a leading exporter of terror and violence is unparalleled. Can Pakistan deny the fact that it is home to as many as 150 UN designated terrorists and terrorist entities listed by the UN, and that these proscribed individuals have actively campaigned and contested in elections?", PR Thulasidhass said.

"Can Pakistan deny the fact that impunity reigns supreme in the country as perpetrators of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks continue to roam free? Can Pakistan deny the fact that its leaders have openly called for Jihad against India?," he added.

As Officials Take Bird UP Man Rescued, Akhilesh Yadav Targets PM

The heartwarming story of Arif Khan Gurjar and the sarus crane is over -- and the bird's relocation to the wild has provoked Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav to take potshots at Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The crane that lived with Mr Gurjar in Amethi district's Mandkha village, accompanied him to his fields and was accepted "like a family member" was on Tuesday taken away by forest department officials.

It was shifted to the Samaspur Bird Sanctuary in Rae Bareli so that it could live in its "natural environment", an official said.

A YouTube video showed Mr Gurjar placing the big bird in the back of a pick-up truck. He appeared to wipe away a tear as he walked away.

The YouTuber asked his subscribers to comment if the officials did a good thing "separating" them. But the department said Mr Gurjar agreed with the decision.

"Whatever action has been taken is with Arif's consent," Divisional Forest Officer D N Singh said on Wednesday. The official said these birds always live in pairs. Since this one was living alone, there was some apprehension.

A day after the breakup, Mr Gurjar appeared in Lucknow at a press conference by SP president Akhilesh Yadav, who asked indirectly if any official had the courage to take away the peacocks at the prime minister's residence.

Mr Yadav didn't name him, but appeared to be referring to pictures posted online earlier by PM Modi, in which he seen feeding a peacock.

"If the (state) government is snatching the sarus, the government should also snatch the peacock from the one who was feeding grain to it," he said on Wednesday.

"Does the government have the courage to go there? Does any official have the courage to go there and bring it (the peacock) from there," he added.

Mr Gurjar sat on the dais with the opposition leader, but didn't speak.

The crane probably wouldn't have left the man on its own.

Last month, Mr Gurjar told PTI, "This sarus is now like a family member. On a number of occasions, I left it in the fields to fly away to its own bird community but it refuses to leave me. It comes back to me every time." The man found the bird about a year back in his fields, lying unconscious with a bleeding leg.

He took it home, cleaned the wound and applied a mix of turmeric and mustard on it. Then he devised a splint out of bamboo to keep the leg stable.

But the crane refused to fly away even after it was well enough. Whenever Gurjar went out, it followed.

"I have not attended any family function in the last year because I just can't go anywhere. If it doesn't find me around, it becomes uncomfortable. If I have to go for some work, I need to dodge it. During the night, the bird sleeps by my cot on his one leg," Mr Gurjar had then said.

In Lucknow, Mr Yadav said it was because of the young man's humanity ("sewa bhav") that the crane became his friend.

"This is a subject of study how the sarus remained with him even after recovering," he said.

Mr Yadav claimed that the bird was "snatched" from Gurjar because he had gone to meet and congratulate him.

He also recalled how a sarus research centre was "taken away" from his native Etawah district, arguing that the BJP government is not only against common people and farmers but also against trees and birds.

10 Chinese Planes, 2 Naval Ships Detected Around Taiwan: Report

Taiwan on Tuesday tracked 10 Chinese military aircraft and 2 naval ships around the country, according to the Ministry of National Defense (MND), reported Taiwan News.

The military aircraft and naval vessels were tracked around Taiwan between 6 am on Monday (March 20) and 6 am on Tuesday.

Taiwan sent aircraft, and naval ships, and used land-based missiles to monitor PLA aircraft and vessels, reported Taiwan News.

Of the 10 People's Liberation Army (PLA) aircraft, three were tracked in Taiwan's air defence identification zone (ADIZ), according to the MND.

One Shaanxi Y-8 anti-submarine warfare plane and one Harbin BZK-005 reconnaissance drone entered the southwest corner of Taiwan's ADIZ, while one Harbin Z-9 anti-submarine warfare helicopter was monitored in the southeast sector of the identification zone, reported Taiwan News.

No PLA aircraft crossed the Taiwan Strait median line during this time.

Last Wednesday, MND tracked 28 Chinese military aircraft and four naval vessels around Taiwan.

So far this month, Beijing has sent 292 military aircraft and 76 naval vessels around Taiwan. Since September 2020, China has increased its use of grey zone tactics by routinely sending aircraft into Taiwan's ADIZ, reported Taiwan News.

Grey zone tactics are defined as "an effort or series of efforts beyond steady-state deterrence and assurance that attempts to achieve one's security objectives without resort to direct and sizable use of force."

China stepped up their military action in early August 2022 and held its live-fire drills in six locations around the country after the US White House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan on August 2-3, 2022.
