300 Covid Cases In 24 Hours In Delhi For The First Time Since September
Delhi's COVID-19 cases climbed to 300 on Wednesday for the first time since September last year, while the positivity rate climbed to 13.89 per cent, according to data shared by the city health department. Two more Covid-related deaths were also reported, it said.
On Tuesday, Delhi logged 214 cases with a positivity rate of 11.82 per cent. Delhi recorded 115 fresh coronavirus cases with a positivity rate of 7.45 per cent on Monday.
The city logged 153 cases with a positivity rate of 9.13 per cent on Sunday and 139 cases with a positivity rate of 4.98 per cent on Saturday.
It saw 152 cases with a positivity rate of 6.66 per cent on Friday and 117 cases with a positivity rate of 4.95 per cent on Thursday.
Delhi has witnessed an increase in the number of fresh Covid cases over the last few days amid a sharp rise in the figure of H3N2 influenza cases in the country.
The number of fresh cases had seen a decline over the last few months in Delhi. It had dropped to zero on January 16, the first time since the pandemic broke out.
With the fresh cases, Delhi's COVID-19 tally has increased to 20,09,361, while the death count due to the viral infection stands at 26,526.
The data also showed that 2,160 Covid tests were conducted on Tuesday.
Fifty-four of the 7,986 beds are occupied in the dedicated COVID-19 hospitals in the city, while 452 patients are in home isolation, the health department said.
The number of active cases of the infection currently stands at 806, it added.
Amid a gradual increase in the number of Covid cases in Delhi, medical experts say the new XBB.1.16 variant of the virus could be driving the surge.
However, they maintain that there is no need to panic and people should follow Covid-appropriate behaviour and get booster shots of the vaccines.
They also say this rise in the number of cases could be a result of more people getting themselves tested for Covid as a precaution when they actually get infected with the influenza virus and develop fever and related symptoms.
Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj had said there were not many influenza cases in the city hospitals and the situation was being monitored closely.
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has said the rise in the number of influenza cases is due to the Influenza A sub-type H3N2 virus.
The H3N2 virus is leading to more hospitalisations than the other sub-types. The symptoms include a runny nose, persistent cough and fever.

Delhi Woman's Throat Slit Due To Chinese Kite String, Case Filed: Police
A 36-year-old woman was hospitalised after her throat was slit due to a 'maanjha', or kite string, in northeast Delhi's Shastri Park area, police said on Wednesday.
The incident took place Tuesday when the woman, a Delhi Metro Rail Corporation employee, was returning home on her scooter, they said.
A senior police officer said that Shastri Park Police Station received information at 8.20 pm from Sant Parmanand Hospital that Vinki Bhardwaj, a resident of Vasundhara in Ghaziabad, UP, had her throat cut by a maanjha near Shastri Park flyover.
She was rushed to Max Hospital, Vasundhara, where her condition was stated to be stable.
A case under sections 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code was registered on Wednesday at Shastri Park Police Station and investigation is in progress, the officer said.
On August 11 last year, a 34-year-old man died in Shastri Park area in a similar incident when he was on his way to celebrate Raksha Bandhan at his in-laws' house in Loni.
In another incident, Vipin Kumar, a resident of Rajdhani Park in Mundka, was injured when he was on a motorcycle with his wife and daughter. On Shastri Park Flyover on the ISBT- Seelampur road, he drove into a stray 'Chinese maanjha' which sliced his neck.
On August 14, 26-year-old businessman Abhishek Kumar died after his throat was slit by a 'Chinese manjha' in Shahdara's Mansarovar Park area. Kumar ran a tent business.
He was on his way home on a scooter when a stray kite got stuck around his neck.
Four people were killed in a similar manner last year till August 14, according to police.
In 2017, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) banned Chinese maanjha in the national capital terming it dangerous for animals and human beings and also citing its being a good conductor of electricity.

Arvind Kejriwal's Party's Grievance As Karnataka Poll Dates Announced
The AAP on Wednesday demanded that the Election Commission recognise it as a national party "immediately" and ensure it gets all the “facilities” during the Karnataka Assembly polls a national party is entitled to.
The poll panel said earlier in the day it was looking into the issue of granting national status to the Aam Aadmi Party.
"The Election Commission announced the schedule for Karnataka elections today but we have a grievance with it," AAP Rajya Sabha MP and national spokesperson Sanjay Singh said at a press conference.
He lamented that the poll panel has not yet taken any decision on the matter even after the AAP fulfilled the conditions required to be declared a national party with its performance in Punjab, Gujarat and Goa polls last year.
"Election Commission has not officially given national party status to AAP despite the party ruling Delhi and Punjab and has two MLAs with over 6 per cent vote share in Goa. The party also has five MLAs in Gujarat where it secured about 14 per cent vote share in the assembly polls last year,” Mr Singh said.
“Even a class 10 student would give you the answer if you ask whether the AAP should get national status or not as per rules,” he said, adding, “I don't know what the Election Commission is doing”.
“I urge the Election Commission to immediately give AAP a national party status and also ensure that we get all facilities in Karnataka polls that any national party is entitled to,” Mr Singh said.
Mr Singh claimed that the Election Commission had assured him at an all-party meeting that a decision will be taken on AAP's request soon.
"At the meeting, I asked in the presence of the chief election commissioner when we will have national party status. He said a decision was going to be taken very soon and that AAP will be given national party status,” Mr Singh claimed.
The AAP leader said the party has submitted a request for this to the poll panel even though it was not required.
"The Election Commission should have taken a decision on its own. There was no need to file any application in this regard but we did and it is pending with the Election Commission,” he added.

"Person Born To A Foreigner Mother Can Never...": BJP MP's Jibe At Gandhis
BJP MP Sanjay Jaiswal today courted controversy with a personal attack on the Gandhi family, while protesting against Rahul Gandhi's controversial remark on the Modi surname.
"A person born to a foreigner mother can never be a patriot," Mr Jaiswal told NDTV, and claimed those were Chanakya's words from 2,000 years ago which he was reminded of today.
Pragya Singh Thakur, BJP MP from Bhopal, made the same remark earlier this month. She said that Rahul should not be allowed to do politics in the country and should be thrown out of India. She also said that they agree that Rahul Gandhi is not from India. "We know you are not from India...Chanyakka said that a son born of a foreigner mother can never be a patriot and Rahul Gandhi has proved it right," she said on March 11.
Rahul Gandhi has insulted the country abroad, Mr Jaiswal further said, referring to his comments on Indian democracy in London, adding that "it's obvious" that you don't trust India if you say that our democracy, courts, and journalists are all wrong.
He called the former Wayanad MP a "habitual offender".
"He is upset with PM Modi because he considered himself a prince, and the PM has been forming a majority government since the last two terms," Mr Jaiswal said.
Escalating its attack on Rahul Gandhi for his controversial remark on the Modi surname, the BJP today held a protest demonstration at the Gandhi statue in the Parliament. The ruling party's MPs, who have accused Mr Gandhi of insulting Other Backward Classes (OBC) by calling them thieves, demanded that he apologise to the entire nation.
Sanjay Jaiswal accused Mr Gandhi of derogatory speech against marginalised communities, and claimed he will have to face the anger of the OBCs wherever he goes.
The court had given him an opportunity, he could have apologised. He could have said in the court that his remark referred only to Nirav Modi and Lalit Modi, but he intentionally didn't do that to spin it as a sacrifice. The country is watching," Mr Jaiswal said.
The BJP today released a poster and pamphlet for its OBC campaign that is to start from April 6. Party president JP Nadda will launch it from Haryana's Manesar.
"BJP president JP Nadda will launch the OBC campaign, Ghar Ghar Chalo, Gaon Gaon Chalo, from Manesar. It will reach 1 crore villages from April 6, BJP's foundation day, till April 14, BR Ambedkar's jayanti. Party will also celebrate Jyotiba Phule anniversary in between on April 11. We will compare what PM Modi did for OBCs and what the UPA did for them, and how congress has only undermined their interests," BJP MP K Laxman, OBC morcha head of the party, said.
OBC MPs will also have dinner and discussion with JP Nadda tomorrow at 6:30 in Delhi, sources said.
Earlier today, Union Minister Smriti Irani tore into Rahul Gandhi, saying he "pretends today not to be coward".
"He (Rahul Gandhi) abused and accused PM Modi in Parliament, but could not verify his own statement by authenticating it with his own signature. He is the man who apologised to the Supreme Court and pretends today not to be a coward. Rahul Gandhi has been convicted by the court, for not abusing an individual, but the OBC community is known to every citizen of our country," she said.
In 2019 May, Rahul Gandhi had tendered an unconditional apology in the Supreme Court for his 'Chowkidar Chor hai' jibe against Prime Minister Modi.
"This is not the first time Gandhi family has tried to insult people from Dalit or backward communities. Rahul Gandhi could not develop the humility to beg the forgiveness of the OBC community in our country is just another manifestation of the political arrogance called the Gandhi family. When a woman from the tribal family became the President, even then Droupadi Murmu was insulted by a Congress member on the instructions of the Gandhi family," the Minister added.
In a rare show of strength, Opposition parties had marched from the Parliament complex to Vijay Chowk on Monday against the Centre over the Adani issue and Rahul Gandhi's disqualification.

Police Crack Down On Congress Protest At Red Fort, Leaders Detained
The Delhi police cracked down on a Congress protest held near the Red Fort this evening against the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi from parliament. Many of the MPs, including former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat, have been detained.
Visuals from the spot showed slogan-shouting leaders being taken away in police vehicles. Sources said the Delhi Police had denied permission for the protest.
The Congress has announced a month-long protest programme over the disqualification of Mr Gandhi after he was found guilty and sentenced to two years in prison in a defamation case from 2019 last week.
In the campaign ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Mr Gandhi had apparently said, "How come all thieves have the common surname Modi?"
The Gujarat court, which sentenced him to two years in jail, also granted him bail and suspended the sentence. On Friday, he was formally disqualified by Lok Sabha.
Yesterday, the Congress held a "black" protest in parliament, in which they were joined by members of several other opposition parties including the Trinamool Congress and Telangana's ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi.
The month-long protest programme was announced later in the evening following a meeting between the Congress and 16 Opposition parties. The dinner meet was held at the home of party chief Mallikarjun Kharge.

Ahead Of Biden's Visit, UK Raises Terror Threat Level In North Ireland
The UK government Tuesday raised the terrorism threat level in Northern Ireland to "severe", ahead of an expected visit by US President Joe Biden to mark the 25th anniversary of a landmark peace accord.
The domestic spy agency MI5 now judged that the threat of an attack had gone from "substantial" to "severe", meaning an incident is judged "highly likely", Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Heaton-Harris said.
After suffering three decades of bloody unrest, Northern Ireland stands transformed since the Good Friday Agreement was adopted on April 10, 1998.
"However, a small number of people remain determined to cause harm to our communities through acts of politically motivated violence," Heaton-Harris told parliament.
He urged the public to "remain vigilant, but not be alarmed" at the announcement, which comes after a police officer was shot and seriously wounded in front of his son.
Heaton-Harris drew no link to the planned trip by Biden, who intends to visit Ireland and Northern Ireland.
The trip is expected to take in the anniversary of the peace deal, which was brokered with US mediation.
The anniversary comes with the territory locked in political paralysis, as pro-UK unionists refuse to re-enter government in objection to a post-Brexit trade deal agreed by London and the European Union.
More extreme militants in the pro-UK camp have issued periodic warnings about the consequences of the deal, which they argue leaves Northern Ireland at risk of political and economic divorce from Great Britain.
But Heaton-Harris said that sustained bloodshed was a thing of the past.
"The political future of Northern Ireland rests with the democratic will of the people and not the violent actions of the few," he said.
"Together we will ensure there is no return to the violence of the past."

Congress Skips Key Meet With Election Commission On Assam Delimitation
The opposition Congress in Assam skipped a key meeting alleging the Election Commission did not reply to its appeal on a meeting on district boundary irregularities. The Congress said the EC gave very less time to the party and alleged the meeting had a "predetermined objective."
The EC has once again sent an invite to the Congress for a meeting tomorrow before the full team leaves for Delhi from Guwahati.
Ahead of the delimitation of constituencies in Assam, the full team of the EC led by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar arrived in Guwahati on Sunday on a three-day visit for holding consultations with stakeholders, including political parties and civil societies.
"The Assam Congress had earlier met the EC in Delhi and asked them about the clarifications and the irregularities regarding district political boundaries. They told us they will meet our queries and we then gave them a reminder. We are waiting for a reply," Congress MLA and Assam Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia said.
"Now they are only giving 10-15 minutes and we don't think meeting them will be of any useful," Mr Saikia said.
EC sources said they have already given time to the Congress delegation ahead of everyone else at the very beginning in Delhi on January 4.
The Congress again sought time from the EC on March 22 for a meeting to which the EC replied that since it would visit Assam in the coming days, they will meet the Congress delegation in Guwahati.
"Individual response is not a practice and, in any case, cannot be given in connection to the delimitation exercise without hearing all the stakeholders," a senior EC official said.
"Responding to the EC's invitation, 10 recognised national and state political parties and 76 civil society organisations, public representatives and non-recognised political parties met the EC in Guwahati today," the official said.
Other opposition parties AIUDF and Trinamool Congress in their closed-door meetings with the EC have raised objections about the process, including the Assam National Register of Citizens (NRC), the timing of the delimitation exercise ahead of the 2024 general election and apprehensions that it might alter boundaries of Muslim-majority constituencies.
"Delimitation was on hold since the NRC was not completed and all political parties had that time taken a consensus. Even now the situation remains the same as Assam NRC is not final. It has not been notified, so we don't know if the 19 lakh people left out from the NRC will figure in the voters' list or not," Assam Trinamool Congress chief Ripun Bora said.
The delimitation exercise for redrawing the territorial boundaries of the assembly and parliamentary constituencies of Assam, based on the 2001 census, had been stuck for 14 years. The last delimitation in Assam was done in 1976.
"The intention of the government is not clear. The entire country will have delimitation in 2026. So why is Assam having it now? We feel there is a conspiracy against some communities so that they don't have proper representation in parliament and assembly," said AIUDF general secretary Aminul Islam.
The ruling BJP has hit back at the opposition parties.
"There have been delimitation in the past as well. This delimitation process is long due, so we welcome the process and the EC initiative to come here and hold consultations. The opposition is trying to make an issue because they have nothing against the government as the government's performance is very good. There was delimitation during the Congress regime as well. It is not a new process," Assam BJP spokesperson Rupam Goswami said.
