"Opposition Unity Not Important, People's Unity Is": Arvind Kejriwal In Punjab
Amid efforts towards opposition unity, AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday said in a democracy people are supreme and opposition parties should go to them with a positive agenda.
"Opposition unity is not important, people's unity is important," Arvind Kejriwal said.
No matter how much some people may try to forge unity among opposition parties, if people have decided to support someone they will vote for that person, he said.
"Second, the agenda should be positive. If everyone says they have come together to defeat someone, then people don't like that. People say defeating anyone or making anyone win is their job and should be left to them," the Delhi chief minister told reporters in Phagwara, near Jalandhar.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and senior party leader Raghav Chadha accompanied Mr Kejriwal during the visit ahead of the Jalandhar Lok Sabha bypoll on May 10. The counting will be done on May 13.
In their presence, former Congress MLA from Jalandhar West Sushil Rinku joined the Aam Aadmi Party.
Welcoming Rinku into the party, Raghav Chadha said his presence will boost AAP.
The bypoll was necessitated following the death of Congress MP Santokh Singh Chaudhary (76) in January due to a cardiac arrest.
Responding to a question on the possibility of a "third front" with AAP as its constituent, Arvind Kejriwal said, "In a democracy, people are supreme. There's a lot of talk about forging opposition unity. But the day people unite, they will decide what is to be done...what is their mood," he said.
Mr Kejriwal also said that if there is any front - of two, three, four or 10 parties - the alliance will have to put forth a "positive agenda" and people will decide whose agenda they like and who they will vote for.
"So a positive agenda is necessary and second people's unity is important. We have to fight elections to make people win, not defeat them," Mr Kejriwal added.

"Nearly Lost Her": Crippled Pak Elephant Noor Jehan Will Survive Diagnosis
International vets "nearly lost" a 17-year-old elephant in Pakistan on Wednesday after knocking her out to perform diagnostic tests, but they now hope to treat multiple issues that have left her crippled for months.
Noor Jehan has been barely able to walk around her enclosure at Karachi Zoo because of a huge growth between her back legs, sparking concern from keepers and visitors.
A team of veterinarians and wildlife experts from Four Paws International intervened after images of the ailing African elephant were shared across social media.
"We nearly lost Noor Jehan when we gave the sedative," veterinarian Amir Khalil told reporters after the jumbo diagnosis.
"It was a risky procedure."
A huge crane was deployed on Wednesday to lift the 3.5-ton pachyderm after she had been tranquillized.
Ultrasound and other tests suggest Noor Jehan has a huge hematoma inside her abdomen, as well as issues with her intestines.
"It is clear Noor Jehan is in serious pain and suffering," Khalil said.
"There is a treatment for this... it needs some luck and it needs a lot of work in coming days."
Pakistan's zoos are frequently criticised for disregarding animal welfare, and in 2020 a court ordered the only zoo in the country's capital to shut because of its decrepit state.
The zoo drew international condemnation for its treatment of an Asian elephant named Kaavan, who was later airlifted to retirement in Cambodia in a project spearheaded by US popstar and actor Cher, and carried out by Four Paws.
Last year a zoo in the eastern city of Lahore called off plans to auction 12 lions to private individuals after overbreeding, saying it would instead create new enclosures for the big cats.
"It is high time to phase out zoos from Pakistan," said Mahera Omar, the chief of Pakistan Animal Welfare Society.

Bengaluru Man Buys Abu Dhabi Lottery Ticket Online, Wins Rs 44 Crore Grand Prize
Bengaluru resident, Arun Kumar Vatakke Koroth has hit the jackpot as he became the new millionaire during the Big Ticket's draw series number 250 held in Abu Dhabi. Mr Koroth won the grand prize of Dh20 million (Rs 44,75,67,571) with his ticket number 261031, bought on March 22.
According to Gulf News, Mr Koroth managed to bag the grand prize in his second attempt. However, when he got a call from the show's host informing him about his big win, Mr Koroth thought it was a prank call. He hung up the call immediately and blocked the phone number too.
“After receiving the call from Big Ticket, I assumed it was fake, a prank, probably. I disconnected the line and blocked that number. After a while, I received a call from a different number,” the Bengaluru man told Khaleej Times.
Notably, Mr Koroth learned about the Big Ticket live draws from his friends, and he started buying Big Ticket raffle tickets online. On March 22, he purchased his second ticket from the Big Ticket website to try his luck again.
After winning the grand prize, Mr Koroth said that he is ''still in disbelief.''
''I could not believe that I had won the first prize. I am still in disbelief. I bought this ticket through the ‘buy two get one free' option. The ticket I won was the third one,'' he added.
As per the outlet, he is currently admitted to a hospital for his knee surgery. He now plans to use the money to fulfil his long-cherished dream of starting a business.
''I have a dream. I will try to achieve the same,'' he said.
Not just Mr Koroth, another Indian national Suresh Mathan, who lives in Bahrain, also won the second prize of Dh100,000 (Rs 2,237,837), as per Khaleej Times. The third prize of Dh90,000 was won by an Oman-based Indian national, Muhammed Shefeek.

Pregnancy: Covid During Pregnancy Might Increase Obesity Risk; Here's How To Avoid It
The results of a recent study, which was published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism of the Endocrine Society, suggest that children whose mothers used Covid-19 during pregnancy may be more likely to become obese.
Since 2019, more than 100 million instances of Covid-19 have been documented in the United States, but there is little data available on the infection's long-term implications on health. For the next five years, millions of newborns will be exposed to maternal infection throughout foetal development because 9% of reproductive-aged women with Covid-19 are pregnant.
According to the research, infants exposed to maternal COVID-19 during pregnancy had altered growth patterns that may eventually raise their risk of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. However, further research is required to fully comprehend how COVID-19 affects expectant mothers and their unborn infants.
These studies suggest pregnant women who contract COVID-19 may be at a higher risk of developing obesity. This is due to various factors, including decreased physical activity, changes in diet and lifestyle, and potential complications from COVID-19.
Obesity is a serious concern for women who are pregnant as it increases the risk of several complications for both mother and baby. However, there are certain things you can do to reduce the risk of obesity during pregnancy.
Tips on how to reduce the risk of obesity during pregnancy:
1. Maintain a healthy diet
Eating a balanced and healthy diet is the key to reducing obesity risk during pregnancy. Avoid eating unhealthy snacks and junk food and include more fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains in your diet. Consult with your doctor or nutritionist to help you create a diet plan that is best for you.
2. Stay active
Exercise is crucial during pregnancy. It helps to maintain a healthy weight, improves your energy levels, and reduces your risk of chronic diseases. Engage in pre-natal exercises like yoga, walking, and swimming, but start slowly and follow your doctor's advice on the level of activity appropriate for you.
3. Control your weight gain
Gaining weight during pregnancy is inevitable, but it is recommended to gain within the healthy range for your body type. This means that you should not gain too much or too little weight during your pregnancy. Generally, a woman should gain anywhere from 11-40 lbs. during the 9 months of pregnancy.
4. Manage stress
Stress can lead to emotional eating and cause weight gain. Therefore, learning stress reduction techniques is essential during pregnancy. This can include practicing yoga, getting enough rest, deep breathing, or pursuing relaxation techniques like massage therapy.
5. Get the right nutrients
Consuming the right nutrients and supplements can help you reduce the risk of obesity during pregnancy. Ensure you are getting enough folic acid, iron, magnesium, and calcium, as well as taking a good pre-natal multivitamin supplement.
6. Avoid smoking and alcohol
Smoking and drinking alcohol are not recommended during pregnancy. Smoking puts both you and the fetus at risk, whereas alcohol consumption is linked to obesity, low birth weight, and fetal alcohol syndrome.
Lowering your risk for obesity during pregnancy is vital for your health and your baby's safety. A healthy diet, exercise, stress management, and reducing alcohol and tobacco use are all excellent ways to maintain a healthy weight during pregnancy.
Remember to consult with your doctor and make sure you are on track to prevent obesity and stay healthy during this special time. By following these tips, pregnant women can reduce the risk of obesity and maintain a healthy weight during and after pregnancy, even if they contract COVID-19.

Stopped From Going To Hooghly, Says Bengal BJP Chief Day After Violence
Prohibitory orders continued, internet services remained suspended overnight in some areas of the violence-hit Hooghly district in West Bengal and the BJP state president was stopped from entering Rishra by the police on Monday.
Police said the situation in Rishra and Srerampore areas in Hoogly district, where violent clashes broke out during Ram Navami procession Sunday, was peaceful and under control on Monday and would likely improve in the afternon.
The barring of the BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar from visiting Rishra elicited strong response from the saffron party, which demanded immediate deployment of central forces in the area.
"I am not being allowed to meet my injured party workers. The police are citing the prohibitory orders. The police can at least allow Mahato and me to enter. The police do not want to allow me as they want to hide the truth," the BJP leader told reporters.
Majumdar, who was accompanied by BJP MP Jyotirmoy Singh Mahto, demanding immediate deployment of central forces, said the "state police has completely failed to control the situation".
Mahato was seen having heated arguments with the police personnel.
"The police are stopping us because we are from BJP but TMC MPs and MLAs are roaming free in the area . The government does not want the truth to come out. The violence was pre-planned," he claimed.
A Chandannagore Police Commissionerate official said about 12 people were arrested for the clashes.
"Things are under control and peaceful. Prohibitory orders are in force and there is heavy police deployment. Security forces conducted route marches at some places of the affected area. There was tension in some areas in the morning. We dispersed the crowds and boosted security," he told PTI.
Markets were allowed to open for some time and police are keeping a tab on the movement of vehicles, he said.
"Hopefully, the situation will further improve in the afternoon. A decision on revoking prohibitory orders and resumption of internet services will be taken after evaluation," the official added.
Two Ram Navami processions were organised in Rishra police station area and the second one came under attack near Wellington Jute Mill More on GT Road around 6.15 pm on Sunday. The prohibitory orders were imposed in Rishra wards 1-5 and Serampore's ward 24 and internet services suspended in some parts of the district till 10 pm on Monday, the police said.
Some BJP workers were seen holding a sit-in near the affected area in Rishra and protesting against the stopping of the the party's convoy on Monday.
Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari(BJP) has blamed TMC for engineering the attack on the Ram Navami rally organised by the BJP.
Adhikari, who met injured Pursurah BJP MLA Biman Ghosh at the hospital, told reporters that he wanted to visit the trouble-torn pocket immediately but was not allowed to by the Mamata Banerjee administration which clamped the prohibitory order to prevent him from meeting the affected families.
"I wonder why Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee and other TMC leaders are allowed free access to the area, while opposition leaders are prevented from meeting the terrified local people and BJP party workers," he said.
TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh accused BJP of fomenting trouble in the area.
"Action is being taken against culprits, irrespective of their political affiliation or religion. The violence was a pre-planned conspiracy by BJP to disrupt communal harmony and peace in the state. It wants to secure votes at the cost of human lives," he said.
