Mob Attacks Woman In UP, Sets Her House On Fire Over Dispute: Cops

A mob allegedly manhandled a woman and set her thatched house on fire in the Kalan area of this Uttar Pradesh district, police said on Sunday.

Kanti Devi, a resident of Laxmanpur village, allegedly had a dispute with a man identified as Durgesh Tiwari. On Saturday, Durgesh Tiwari and his accomplices arrived at Kanti Devi's hut and manhandled her before setting fire to her thatched house, Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural) Sanjeev Bajpai said.

Based on Kanti Devi's complaint, the police have lodged an FIR against Tiwari and seven others under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, he said.

"The matter is being investigated and the accused will be arrested soon," Sanjeev Bajpai added.

"Not Happy With 135 Seats": DK Shivakumar Sets The Bar High For Congress

Karnataka Congress chief DK Shivakumar has indicated dis-satisfaction with the whopping 135 seats won by the party in the assembly election held earlier this month. At a meeting with party workers in Bengaluru today, he said the Congress should "perform well in every poll from now on" -- setting better results as target in next year's general election.

"Let me confess you all something. I am not happy with the 135 seats we achieved in the assembly polls," Mr Shivakumar told party cadres.  

"Our focus needs to be in the right place and that is the upcoming general elections. The Congress should perform well in every poll from now on, and we all need to work hard. This is just a beginning and do not get lazy with just one win," added Mr Shivakumar, who took oath as Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister along with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah yesterday.

Karnataka has 28 Lok Sabha seats - the seventh largest number -- making it one of the key battleground states.

In the 2019 election, the BJP had won 25 of the seats, the Congress and HD Kumaraswamy's Janata Dal Secular had won one each.

The sole seat the Congress won was Bangalore Rural. The JDS had won in Hassan.

This time, with the Lingayat and the AHINDA votes behind it, the Congress is hoping for a better show. The AHINDA platform -- an old social combination of minorities, Other Backward Classes, and Dalits, had voted overwhelmingly for the Congress.The Lingayats, traditional supporters of the BJP, had also turned against it after it dropped their tallest leader, BS Yeddiyurappa, from the top post.

The BJP, while it won only 65 seats, has manage to keep its voting percentage intact -- 36 per cent. Its former Chief Minister, Basavaraj Bommai, has already indicated that the party will do a rethink on the causes of its defeat and double down ahead of next year's Lok Sabha election.

Jeddah, Sleep, And A French Plane: How Zelensky Reached Japan's G7

As Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskiy touched down in the Japanese city of Hiroshima on Saturday, cameras zoomed in on the plane: a French government-labelled military aircraft.

At times since Russia invaded Ukraine, French President Emmanuel Macron's diplomatic overtures have made some of his allies angry and wary of his intentions despite Paris providing substantial military and financial aid to Ukraine.

But on Friday as Zelenskiy first landed in Jeddah to address the Arab League, the French Airbus emblazoned with the tricolour flag marked an achievement for Macron.

According to French officials, the idea of bringing the Ukrainian leader to the G7 had been in the works for several weeks after initial discussions with the Japanese hosts in particular given a broader list of attendees.

Members of the Global South, a term for some mostly low- and middle-income nations, including India and Brazil, two countries that have not distanced themselves from Moscow, are also attending the summit.

"The Ukrainians asked that President Zelenskiy be transported by the French army," a French presidential official said, adding that the decision had been made on Wednesday.

According to the officials, the Ukrainian delegation was picked up from the Polish border before embarking on a four-hour flight to Jeddah as part of Zelenskiy's broader effort to reach out to countries that have remained on the fence in the conflict.

"It was an opportunity for him to explain his position with countries he doesn't usually talk to," a second French official said.

Speaking ahead of a bilateral meeting with Macron in Hiroshima, Zelenskiy thanked France and said he had received "positive signals" from Arab states without elaborating.

One of the officials, who travelled on the plane with the Ukrainian delegation, said it had been striking how tired they were and had taken the opportunity to catch up on sleep in the 15-hour flight from Saudi to Japan, crossing Chinese airspace on its route.

But, the official said, Zelenskiy had on several occasions called his diplomatic and military teams in to prepare how they would handle the different dynamics and views each of their potential interlocutors had on the war. The aim, French officials said, was to sway their stances.

It wasn't the first time Paris had stepped in to offer its aviation comforts. A French government Falcon jet had taken Zelenskiy from Brussels to Poland in February after a European heads of state summit, the French officials said.

"A plane in the colours of the French Republic has arrived in Hiroshima," Macron tweeted after meeting Zelenskiy. "On board, the Ukrainian delegation came to the G7 to work with us and our partners for Ukraine's victory and to restore peace in Europe."

Road Caves In At Metro Excavation Site In Delhi

A portion of a road caved in Saturday morning near a metro construction site in south Delhi's Maidan Garhi area, police said.

The stretch of road is undergoing deep excavation work for the metro, Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) Chandan Choudhary said, adding, no one was reported hurt in the incident.

Delhi Metro said the cave-in happened at its site Aerocity-Tughlakabad corridor site.

"A portion of an internal road moving towards Maidangarhi from IGNOU has collapsed during the excavation work being done as part of the construction work of the Aerocity-Tughlakabad corridor of Delhi Metro's Phase 4.

"There hasn't been any injury to any worker or damage to any property nearby. The area has been suitably barricaded and necessary restoration work has been started," DMRC said in a statement.

"The existing traffic on this road is mild and the movement of vehicles has been diverted through the adjacent internal roads of the area," it added.

Visuals circulated on social media showed the caved-in portion of the road, which was covered and barred for the people to enter.

"Will Be Happy To Host Quad Summit In India In 2024": PM Modi In Japan

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that India will be willing to host the next Quad (Quadrilateral Security Dialogue meeting in 2024.

"We will be happy to host the Quad summit in India in 2024," PM Modi said in the opening remarks of the Quad meeting held on the sidelines of a Group of Seven Summit (G-7) meeting in the Japanese city of Hiroshima.

PM Modi was addressing leaders of the US, Australia and Japan, which along with Japan constitute the informal strategic forum called the Quadrilateral Grouping whose primary objective is working for a free, open, prosperous, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region.

"Quad will continue to make efforts towards global good, welfare of the people, prosperity and peace," Prime Minister Narendra Modi said.

The forum traces its genesis to 2004, when the four countries came together to coordinate relief operations in the aftermath of the tsunami.

In 2007, the group again met on the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) sidelines. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was the first to pitch the idea for the formation of Quad in 2007.

Earlier this week, the planned summit of Quad leaders from the US, India, Australia, and Japan in Sydney was cancelled after US President Biden withdrew from his visit due to ongoing debt limit talks in Washington.

However, the White House on Friday (local time) agreed to hold the summit in Japan's Hiroshima.

"After President Biden had to postpone his trip to Australia, the Quad leaders agreed that they would hold their summit in Hiroshima to ensure that the four leaders could come together to mark the Quad's progress over the past year. So tomorrow, in addition to the G7, President Biden will participate in the third in-person Quad Leaders' meeting with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of Australia, Prime Minister Kishida Fumio of Japan, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India," read a statement by White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.

Biden scrapped his planned trip to Sydney as well as a historic visit to Papua New Guinea. The decision -- which prompted Albanese to cancel the scheduled Quad summit -- was seen as a self-inflicted blow to hopes of a more visible US presence in the Indo-Pacific amid its competition with China in the region.

US President Biden thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Australian prime minister Anthony Albanese and Japan's prime minister Fumio Kishida for agreeing to participate in the Quad meeting today on the sidelines of the G7 summit here.

The White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre in a statement on Friday (local time) said that Quad leaders agreed to hold their summit in Hiroshima to ensure that the four leaders could come together to mark the Quad's progress over the past year.

"Along with sharing strategic assessments, the leaders will welcome new forms of Quad cooperation on secure digital technology, submarine cables, infrastructure capacity building, and maritime awareness," the statement added.

"Polar Express In Real Life": Video Showing "Typical Workday In Antarctica" Baffles Internet

A video showing a "typical workday in Antarctica" is going viral on social media. The clip was shared on Instagram by Tomasz Kurczaba, whose bio says he is the head of the 47th Polish Antarctic Expedition. It shows rapid wind movement outside a room, while a person clad in a jacket, gloves, winter boots and goggles desperately attempts to close the door. 

"Typical workday in Antarctica. 47th Polish Antarctic Expedition. King George Island," the caption of the post read.

In the clip, a person firmly holds onto the door but gets swayed by the strong wind. The objects inside the room are also seen moving because of the wild wind. At one moment, another person recording the video is then seen extending their arms while the other person tries to reach out. 

Mr Kurczaba shared the clip a few weeks back and since then it has accumulated more than 24 million views. Internet users were simply left baffled and many even assumed that the video was recorded on a train.

"II thought it was a train," wrote one user. "The Polar Express in real life," said another. 

A third user commented, "First I thought it was a moving train... Then I realized it wasn't," while a fourth jokingly wrote, "It's a flying house". "After watching it for 6 times.now i understand what's happening here," added another. 

Meanwhile, according to The Guardian, King George Island is one of the most frenetic spots on the Antarctic peninsula where weather conditions change rapidly within minutes. Argentina, Brazil, Chile, China, Poland, Russia, South Korea and Uruguay all have year-round bases there. Others maintain summer-only stations.

Houses of 5 Pakistan-Based Terrorists Raided In Jammu And Kashmir's Doda

The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police on Saturday raided the houses of five local terrorists who are currently operating from across the border and making desperate attempts to revive militancy in Doda district, a senior police officer said.

Senior Superintendent of Police of Doda district Abdul Qayoom said the raids were conducted by the SIU in the Gandoh area in connection with a case registered against the five terrorists in 2021 under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

The officer said the searches would help gather evidence and identify their supporters and sympathizers who are working as overground workers.

The terrorists whose houses were searched were Atta Mohd alias "Adil Mubassir" of Tanta Kahara, Mohd Yasir alias "Shahid" of Kunthal-Tanta, Mohd Shafi alias "Nadeem Bhai" and Amjid Ali alias "Rashid" of Trinkal Kahara, and Majid Hussain alias "Abu Zahid Saqib" of Manoie Chilli Pingal, the SSP said.

"All these local terrorists have ex-filtrated to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in the early 1990s and are currently operating from Pakistan. They are making desperate attempts to revive militancy in Doda by way of contacting the local youth through virtual mode and instigating them to join militancy," Abdul Qayoom said.
