Besides his wife, Nishikant is survived by a daughter and a son, both minors. Dibakar is survived by two sons and his wife.

"How Can It Happen?" MK Stalin's DMK Asks After Odisha Tragedy

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin's party DMK today requested the Centre for a transparent investigation into the horrific three-train collision in Odisha which killed at least 288 people and injured hundreds more. The party said that the government should focus on safety before moving to launch new trains, such as 'Vande Bharat'. This comes even as the country's rail network is undergoing a transformation with new trains and modern stations.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not paid attention to rail safety while he flagged off Vande Bharat trains himself in each state," said DMK MP and former Union Minister A Raja.

"Vande Bharat Express" - a semi-high-speed train built in India - is showcased as evidence of this modernisation, with PM Modi himself flagging off the first journeys of many of the trains around the country.

He, while referring to resignations by former Railways Ministers following train accidents, asked for fixing responsibility. "Technology has improved a lot. How can this happen? What went wrong? Was it a system or human error? Fix responsibility," said A Raja.

The DMK leader, however, also insisted that it was now doubting the integrity of the Prime Minister or the Railways Minister

The state BJP has denied DMK's allegations on rail safety. The state vice president Narayan Tirupati said, "Rail safety was taken seriously only over the last nine years".

Citing allegations by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee that the BJP government had not installed rail safety technologies she had earlier initiated as Railway Minister, Mr Raja added "Only less than 2 per cent of the 75,000 km long rail network have rail safety systems".

The Odisha crash involved the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, the Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express, and a goods train. The accident saw one train ram so hard into another that carriages were lifted high into the air, twisting and then smashing off the tracks.

Prime Minister Modi today visited the accident site and met those injured in the accident. "Severest action would be taken against anyone found responsible," he said.

"Broke Open Windows, Jumped Out Of Coach": Odisha Train Tragedy Survivor

Returning home to their families after several months of working in south India, passengers aboard the 12864 Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express suddenly heard a loud thud, following which they fell off their berths and lights went off.

They were just five hours away from their destination in Howrah when the train they were travelling got involved in a triple train accident at Bahanaga Bazar station in Odisha's Balasore district.

The train, which was running a little over three hours late from its schedule, was moving towards its next stop Balasore, some 20 km away, when the accident took place around 7 pm on Friday.

Mizan Ul Haq, a resident of Bardhaman, was in one of the coaches at the rear of the train.

"The train was running at a high speed. Around 7 pm, a loud sound was heard and everything started moving in all directions and I fell down on the floor from the upper berth as the lights went off inside the compartment," Haq, who was returning home from work in Karnataka on a holiday, said.

He said that somehow, he managed to come out of the damaged coach and then to safety.

"It was ghastly, many people with grave injuries were lying around beside mangled coaches," Haq, who was lucky to have escaped with minor injuries, told PTI at Howrah station, where medical aid, food and other assistance were provided by the railway authorities to the surviving passengers.

The unaffected 17 coaches of the 12864 Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express reached Howrah at 1 pm on Saturday with 635 passengers, of whom 40 to 50 people were administered medical treatment on arrival, North Howrah Deputy Commissioner of Police Anupam Singh said.

He said that five of them were sent to hospital for further treatment, while others left for their destinations.

Rekha, a Bengaluru resident coming to Kolkata for a visit, said that she was in a coach ahead of the wagons that got derailed.

"It was total chaos initially. We got off our compartment out of fear and sat in the nearby fields in the darkness till our train finally started for Howrah in the early hours," she said.

Another Bardhaman resident, a carpenter who works in Bengaluru, said he was injured in the chest, feet and head when the coach in which he was travelling turned turtle.

"We had to break open the windows and jump out of the compartment to save ourselves," he said, adding he saw many dead bodies after the accident.

Imtajul Khan, a resident of Murshidabad, said he saw many people dying in front of his eyes.

"It was shocking, I don't think I will ever be able to overcome the effect of this dreadful incident," he said, as he headed for his destination after receiving treatment at Howrah station at a medical camp set up by the railways.

World-Class Roads Vital For PM's $5 Trillion Economy Goal: Nitin Gadkari

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Friday said roads of world standards are needed for India to become a USD 5 trillion economy as envisaged by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Addressing a gathering in Dumad near Vadodara city, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways assured that all highways in India will be of "world standards" by 2024.

"You will find good quality national highways anywhere you go in the country. Our country is changing. It is our PM's dream to make India a developed and self-reliant nation which takes care of its poor and needy citizens.

"To make India a USD 5 trillion economy as envisaged by PM Narendra Modi, it is necessary to have world class road infrastructure in the country. And that is what we are trying to achieve," said Gadkari.

Stressing on the need to have better roads, the minister informed the audience that former US president John F Kennedy had once said American roads are not good because America is rich but America is rich because American roads are good.

"In Gujarat, highway projects of Rs 2 lakh crore are currently underway. I want to assure you that before the end of 2024, all the highways across the country will be of world standards, as good as American roads," the Union minister asserted.

Gadkari also said the 'Signature Bridge' connecting Okha with Beyt Dwarka island in Devbhumi Dwarka district of Gujarat was nearing completion and it would be inaugurated by the PM ahead of Janmashtami, which will be observed in September.

The Union minister was here to inaugurate a flyover, an underpass and a service road built at Dumad junction on the Surat-Ahmedabad National Highway 48 at a cost of Rs 48 crore.

According to Gadkari, the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, being built at a cost of Rs 1 lakh crore, has been completed till the Rajasthan border, while the remaining stretch till Mumbai will be finished in the next six months.

Work on the Surat-Chennai Expressway, Amritsar-Jamnagar Expressway and between Sanchore in Rajasthan and Mehsana in Gujarat was underway, he added.

On the request of Vadodara Lok Sabha MP Ranjanben Bhatt, Gadkari approved an underpass at Chhani Junction near the city and the widening of nine narrow bridges on the highway between Vadodara and Vapi.

"Not The Easiest To Write": Salman Rushdie To Author Book On Knife Attack

British author Salman Rushdie has said that he is writing a book about the knife attack that took place on him last year in New York, as per a report in The Guardian. In a pre-recorded Zoom appearance at the Hay Literary Festival, he said, "I'm trying to write a book about the attack on me - what happened and what it means, not just about the attack, but around it."

The award-winning author added, "It will be a relatively short book, a couple of hundred pages. It's not the easiest book in the world to write but it's something I need to get past in order to do anything else. I can't really start writing a novel that's got nothing to do with this ... So I just have to deal with it."

Mr Rushdie also told the audience that he was in good health, mentioning that he was "doing OK". He also expressed his appreciation for the response to his most recent work, 'Victory City', which he had completed before the stabbing incident. "I never take anything for granted. Most people seem to like the book and that means a lot," he continued.

On August 12, 2022, the novelist was giving a lecture at the Chautauqua Institution in New York when a man reached the stage and stabbed and punched him several times. He lost sight in one eye and the use of one hand following the "brutal" attack and spent approximately two months in the hospital.

Mr Rushdie's attacker Hadi Matar is being held without bail in the Chautauqua County Jail in the village of Mayville. He has been charged with second-degree attempted murder and could face a lengthy prison sentence after the trial is over.

"Rally Postponed Due To Security Reasons": #MeToo-Accused Wrestling Chief

Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on Friday said that Jan Chetna Maharally, which was scheduled for June 5, has been postponed due to security reasons adding that he is grateful for the wishes he received in support of the rally.

While addressing reporters in Ayodhya, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh said, "I thank media persons, people of Ayodhya, people from across the country who blessed us. Also, we have cancelled the Jan Chetna Maharally due to security reasons."

Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who has been accused of sexually harassing some women wrestlers also said that purpose of the rally was to discuss the "evil forces" of the society but in view of the ongoing police probe and directions of the top court, the rally has been postponed.

"In the present situation, some political parties are trying to disturb social harmony by promoting provincialism, regionalism and caste conflict by holding rallies at various places. The purpose of holding a 'Sant Sammelan' at Ayodhya on June 5 was to discuss the evil forces that are spreading in the entire society," he said.

The WFI president also thanked and expressed gratitude to all his supporters and well-wishers.

"Lakhs of supporters and well-wishers from all religions, castes and regions have supported me in a humble way on this issue. That's why I express my gratitude to everyone and assure you that I and my family will always be indebted to you," he said.

Several ace grapplers including Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik have been protesting against the BJP MP accusing him of sexual harassment and demanding his arrest. A group of seers had extended support to Singh and announced a 'Sant Sammelan' in Ayodhya.

On Thursday, Brij Bhushan Singh alleged that the protesting wrestlers are changing their "demands and language" continuously and added that he still stands by his statement that he will hang himself if even one of the allegations against him is proven to be true.

"...First they (protesting wrestlers) had some other demand and later they demanded something else. They are changing their demands and language continuously. I had said that if even one case against me gets proven, I will hang myself...I stand by my statement..," the BJP MP told reporters in Gonda.

On Tuesday, Olympic medalist wrestlers Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik alongwith Vinesh Phogat arrived in Uttarakhand's Haridwar to immerse their all medals including Olympic ones in the river Ganga, as a mark of their protest.

However, on the intervention of farmer leader Naresh Tikait, the wrestlers held off immersing their medals and said that a Khap meeting would be held on the issue.

The wrestlers later issued a five-day ultimatum to the authorities to act against the WFI chief.

On May 28, wrestlers Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia along with Vinesh Phogat and Sangeeta Phogat were detained by Delhi Police while attempting to march to the new Parliament building where they planned to stage a demonstration. FIR has been filed under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 147, 149, 186, 188, 332, 353, Section 3 of the PDPP Act, said Delhi Police.

New Mars Mission Still In "Study Phase," Says ISRO Scientist

The second mission to Mars is in the study phase as the Indian space agency is looking at various options available to make the mission happen, a senior ISRO scientist said on Thursday.

The Mars mission has to be bigger with a more scientific outcome, M Sankaran, Director, of UR Rao Satellite Centre of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) told PTI.

"If you are talking about a new mission to Mars, then that is still in the study phase. We are looking at various options available to us for making a mission happen. It has to be significantly bigger or with more scientific outcomes with respect to Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM). We are still in the study phase and we are configuring it," Sankaran told PTI.

India successfully launched its first Mars Orbiter Mission called Mangalyaan on November 5, 2013, which started orbiting the red planet on September 24, 2014. The orbiter lost contact in October 2022 and thus the Mangalyaan-1 mission came to an end.

Regarding Chandrayaan-3, he said the lunar spacecraft had already reached the launch port.

"The preparation is going on in Sriharikota. We do expect that sometime in July the launch will take place," he said.

According to the space scientist, every aspect of the mission has been checked, especially those experiences that ISRO gleaned from its Chandrayaan-2 mission.

"All possible precautions have been taken. The mood at ISRO is upbeat," he added.

Regarding India's space mission Gaganyaan, Sankaran said it was an intense project with a lot of new development activities taking place.

"Many developments and many tests are happening, which is not visible to the public. Lots of works are going on. We do expect that there will be something which will be visible to people during this year," he added.
