Ex US Vice President To Challenge Former Boss Trump In 2024 President Poll

Republican former vice president Mike Pence has launched his hotly-anticipated challenge to his one-time boss Donald Trump for the party's 2024 White House nomination, papers filed with the US Federal Election Commission showed Monday.

The 63-year-old evangelical Christian was scheduled to kick off his presidential campaign officially on Wednesday with a video in the early voting state of Iowa, joining an already crowded field.

Pence will then make his pitch to the nation at a live televised town hall event at 9:00 pm (0100 GMT Thursday), setting up the unusual scenario of two former running mates becoming rivals.

The former vice president spent his 2017-21 tenure as vice president by Trump's side, honing his reputation as an unwaveringly loyal deputy who brought the religious right into the tent and who was willing to defend the president against any accusation.

But he became a pariah in Trumpworld after rejecting the Republican leader's demands that he overturn the 2020 election in his role as president of the Senate.

Berated constantly by Trump after Joe Biden's victory -- and even heckled with chants of "traitor!" at a conservative conference in Florida -- Pence had continued to praise his assailant in public.

That eventually changed as Trump's torrent of false claims of election fraud led to a mob chanting for Pence to be hanged at the US Capitol.

Since the riot, Pence has called out Trump for endangering his family and other people at the Capitol, and has emphasized his differences with Trump on issues ranging from the handling of Russian leader Vladimir Putin to abortion rights.

Microsoft 365 Down For Thousands Of Users: Report

Microsoft Corp's product suite that includes Word and Excel was down for more than 15,000 users on Monday, according to outage tracking website Downdetector.com.

"We're investigating an issue with accessing Outlook on the web," Microsoft tweeted.

The company did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment on the outage reports on Microsoft 365.

Microsoft services have faced at least three outages since the beginning of the year.

Video: Adoption Centre Staff Brutally Assaults 2 Girls, Slams Them To Floor

A viral video from an adoption centre in Chhattisgarh's Kanker district shows the Programme Manager of the centre brutally assaulting two little girls, flinging them to the floor and then onto a bed. The Kanker Collector has ordered an FIR against the adoption centre employee.

The adoption centre is home to orphans under six years old. Sources from the Kanker police said the Programme Manager, Seema Dwivedi, has been involved in several such incidents before this, but no action was taken against her, raising questions about the safety and well-being of the children living there. They added that the adoption Centre has a CCTV camera, but Dwivedi would turn it off at night.

In the video, Dwivedi is seen hitting a little girl, holding her by the hair and then flinging her to the floor. As the girl screams and cries, Dwivedi lifts her up once more, throws her onto the bed and thrashes her again. Two employees of the centre are seen walking by, but neither of them intervene.

Dwivedi then orders another girl to come close to her, says something to the child and begins assaulting her. She then hurls her onto the bed and hits her repeatedly. The video ends with Dwivedi shouting at the crying children and then walking away.

After the video came to light, Kanker district collector Dr Priyanka Shukla today ordered an FIR against Dwivedi.

Police sources said several employees had complained against Dwivedi in the past. Instead of action being taken against Dwivedi, however, eight employees who had opposed her behaviour were sacked. They said a complaint was made to the Women and Child Development Department as well, but Dwivedi escaped punishment, emboldening her.

The services of the NGO for the specific centre have been suspended with immediate effect and a recommendation for the cancellation of their registration has been made to director of the WCD.

An FIR has been filed and she has been taken into police custody. The district official involved has been suspended by the directorate. All required measures are being taken to ensure the security and caretaking of the children at adoption centre, officials said.

Special Trains To Run Between Puri And Howrah For Stranded Passengers

East Coast Railway has decided to run three Special trains between Puri and Howrah to facilitate the passengers as after the recent derailment, train services have been affected in Bhadrak-Kharagpur Railway Section on Howrah-Chennai Main Line, an official statement said on Sunday.

Due to the cancellation of trains, passengers from Puri to Howrah are likely to be stranded at Puri.

Puri Howrah Special (02801) from Puri will leave at 1900hrs (07.00 p.m.) and will run via the Jakhapura-Kendujhargarh-Dongoaposi-Kharagpur route. This train will provide stoppages at Sakhigopal, Khurda Road, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Jakhapura, Harichandanpur, Keonjhargarh, Dongoaposi, Tata and Kharagpur between Puri and Howrah having Two Sleeper Class, Six Second Class Chair Car and Two Guard cum Second Class Seating Coaches.

Puri Howrah Special (02803) from Puri will leave at 2100hrs (09.00 p.m.) and will run via the Cuttack-Angul-Sambalpur City-Jharsuguda route. This train will provide stoppages at Sakhigopal, Khurda Road, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Angul, Rairakhol, Sambalpur City, Jharsuguda, Rourkela, Chakradharpur, Tata and Kharagpur between Puri and Howrah having 11 Second Class Seating, Two AC Chair Car, Two Chair Car and Two Guard cum Second Class Seating Coaches.

Puri Howrah Special (02805) from Puri will leave at 2200hrs (10.00 p.m.) and will run via the Jakhapura-Kendujhargarh-Dongoaposi-Kharagpur route. This train will provide stoppages at Sakhigopal, Khurda Road, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Jakhapura, Harichandanpur, Keonjhargarh, Dongoaposi, Tata and Kharagpur between Puri and Howrah having Two MEMU Motor Car and Six MEMU Coaches.

The tragic train accident in Odisha's Balasore in which 275 people died and 1000 people were injured.

As per the Ministry of Railways, the restoration work is going in full swing and the officials are closely monitoring the restoration process at the accident site.

A manpower of over 1000 people is engaged in the work. More than seven Poclain Machines, two Accident Relief Trains, and 3-4 Railway and Road Cranes are deployed, the Ministry stated.

"Stop Politicising": BJP On Railway Minister's Resignation Demands

The BJP on Sunday asked opposition parties to not politicise the Balasore train accident and said the track record of the Congress-led UPA government's railway ministers was nothing short of a disaster.

BJP IT department head Amit Malviya shared on Twitter what he said were the details of accidents under these ministers and added such "worthies" are the ones demanding the resignation of the "most qualified" railway minister the country has had in seven and half decades.

The Congress had earlier demanded the resignation of Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying he should accept part of the responsibility for creating an all is well facade even as the critical infrastructure of the Indian Railways "languishes in neglect".

Hitting back, Mr Malviya said, "Stop politicising the unfortunate Balasore tragedy because track record of railway ministers, under the UPA, to put it mildly, was nothing short of disaster. Let us focus on relief and rescue operation and putting life and rail back on track, at the earliest." 

Under Mamata Banerjee as railway minister, 1,451 people died in 54 cases of collisions and 839 incidents of train derailments, he said. Death count was 1,159 when Lalu Yadav was the minister while the corresponding figure for Nitish Kumar was 1,527.

Mr Yadav was the minister in the first term of the UPA government while Mr Kumar was at the helm during the NDA government headed by Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

This is the report card of those demanding resignation, Mr Malviya said.

Trinamool Congress supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Banerjee has been vocal in slamming the government over the accident.

Mr Malviya alleged, "Banerjee's rise in politics has been over dead bodies. From Singur to post poll violence of 2021, all she has done is - indulged in dirty politics of death and destruction." 

He posted a video in which Mr Vaishnaw is seen clarifying to her on the accident site on Saturday after she suggested that the death count could be as high as 500.

"That is Mamata Banerjee - petty and petulant," Mr Malviya said.

The BJP leader said the Indian Railways has taken several measures for passengers' safety in the last few years.

This includes record work for maintenance and renewal of tracks while all unmanned level crossings on broad gauge route have been eliminated.

The installation of the Train Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) or 'Kavach' on the railway routes is proceeding quickly, he said, citing other measures as well.

The Railway Board has recommended a CBI probe into the Balasore train accident that has so far claimed 275 lives.

"Our Family Is Devastated": 3 Bengal Brothers Killed In Odisha Train Accident

Baruipur, Jun 3 Three brothers from West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district, who were travelling to Tamil Nadu in search of work, lost their lives in the train crash in Odisha's Balasore, officials said on Saturday.

Haran Gayen (40), Nishikant Gayen (35) and Dibakar Gayen (32), residents of Charanikhali village in Basanti Uttar, usually lived in the southern state most time of the year and did menial jobs there.

They came home a few days back, and were going back to Tamil Nadu this time in the Coromandel Express in search of work as farm labourers.

As the news of their deaths came, a pall of gloom descended on the village. Their wives fell unconscious as neighbours continued consoling them.

Haran's wife Anajita is a neurological patient, locals said, adding that her treatment was now in question. He is survived by two married daughters and a son who has recently started working at a local eatery.

Besides his wife, Nishikant is survived by a daughter and a son, both minors. Dibakar is survived by two sons and his wife.

"My father and uncles are no more, our family is devastated," said an inconsolable Avijit, the son of Haran.

Twelve people from the district have lost their lives in the crash, which happened on Friday evening, officials said.

A total of 110 people from the district were injured, 44 were missing and 16 have so far returned to their homes, they said.

Among those dead, six people are from Basanti block, including the three brothers, two from Kakdwip and one each from Joynagar-2, Baruipur, Canning-1 and Magrahat-1 blocks, they added.

While most of the victims from the district were migrant workers, the rest went to Bengaluru for treatment, officials said.

The accident in Balasore involving three trains -- Coromandel Express, Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express and a goods train -- killed 288 people, in one of the worst railway tragedies in the country.

"Within Seconds We Saw So Many Dead, Injured": Odisha Train Tragedy Survivor

A passenger, who was on board the Coromandel Express that was involved in a horrific accident in Odisha's Balasore on Friday recalls the moment and said that such a situation brings out the scariest part of you.

Speaking to ANI about the incident, the survivor named Anubhav Das, a resident of Cuttack said that he is a PhD student and was travelling back to Cuttack from Kolkata and was present in the last coach of the train due to which he was not impacted by the derailment.

He informed that at the time of the incident, the speed of Coromandel Express was about 110-115 kmph, it was moving smoothly but suddenly the accident occurred.

Recalling the nervous minutes leading up to the derailment of coaches, the survivor said, "Within a span of 30-40 seconds we see so many people injured, dead and cries of help everywhere. Such a situation brings out the scariest part of you."

He also requested the authorities to have a detailed inquiry of the incident and said that if there is any work of miscreants behind the incident then that has to be found out.

"If there is any work of miscreants behind the incident that claimed more than 250 lives then that has to be found out," he said.

Meanwhile, the death toll from a three-train crash in Odisha's Balasore has climbed to 288, Indian Railways said on Saturday.

"As of 2 pm today, the death toll in the Odisha train crash has risen to 288 while 747 people have been injured along with 56 grievously injured," Indian Railways said in a statement.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached the train crash site in Odisha's Balasore. He was accompanied by Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

The three-way accident involved Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, the Coromandel Express and the goods train on three separate tracks at Bahanaga Bazar Station in Odisha's Balasore district. 

According to the Odisha Government's Special Relief Commissioner's office 17 coaches of the two trains had derailed and were severely damaged.

"How Can It Happen?" MK Stalin's DMK Asks After Odisha Tragedy

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin's party DMK today requested the Centre for a transparent investigation into the horrific three-train collision in Odisha which killed at least 288 people and injured hundreds more. The party said that the government should focus on safety before moving to launch new trains, such as 'Vande Bharat'. This comes even as the country's rail network is undergoing a transformation with new trains and modern stations.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not paid attention to rail safety while he flagged off Vande Bharat trains himself in each state," said DMK MP and former Union Minister A Raja.

"Vande Bharat Express" - a semi-high-speed train built in India - is showcased as evidence of this modernisation, with PM Modi himself flagging off the first journeys of many of the trains around the country.

He, while referring to resignations by former Railways Ministers following train accidents, asked for fixing responsibility. "Technology has improved a lot. How can this happen? What went wrong? Was it a system or human error? Fix responsibility," said A Raja.

The DMK leader, however, also insisted that it was now doubting the integrity of the Prime Minister or the Railways Minister

The state BJP has denied DMK's allegations on rail safety. The state vice president Narayan Tirupati said, "Rail safety was taken seriously only over the last nine years".

Citing allegations by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee that the BJP government had not installed rail safety technologies she had earlier initiated as Railway Minister, Mr Raja added "Only less than 2 per cent of the 75,000 km long rail network have rail safety systems".

The Odisha crash involved the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, the Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express, and a goods train. The accident saw one train ram so hard into another that carriages were lifted high into the air, twisting and then smashing off the tracks.

Prime Minister Modi today visited the accident site and met those injured in the accident. "Severest action would be taken against anyone found responsible," he said.
