Boy Steals Money To Buy iPhone Dies By Suicide After Father Scolds Him

A 17-year-old boy allegedly committed suicide at Kalyan in the district after being scolded for stealing money from home to buy an iPhone, police said on Wednesday.

The deceased, who hailed from Gajipur in Uttar Pradesh, lived with his uncle in Mira Road area here where he did his schooling, said an official.

The boy was found to have hanged himself from a tree near the railway tracks in Kalyan on Monday, said inspector Ashok Honmane of Mahatma Phule police station.

Probe revealed that the boy, who recently passed Class 12 exam with 45 per cent marks, had gone to visit his father in UP and while returning, he stole more than Rs 1 lakh which his father had saved for the elder daughter's marriage. He then bought an iPhone with the money.

When his father found this out, he chided him and asked him to return home, the police officer said.

The boy decided to return home but then apparently changed his mind and took the extreme step, he said, adding that further probe was on.

Antony Blinken To "Responsibly Manage" Ties On Rare China Visit Says US

The US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will urge open communication to "responsibly manage" high tensions with China when he pays a rare visit to Beijing this weekend, US officials said.

The State Department confirmed that Mr Blinken will travel this weekend to Beijing on the first trip by a top US diplomat in nearly five years, rescheduling a visit that was scrapped in February as the United States detected what it said was a Chinese spy balloon.

Ahead of the trip, Mr Blinken spoke by telephone to Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang and said he would "raise areas of concern as well as areas of potential cooperation."

State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said Mr. Blinken had stressed "the importance of maintaining open lines of communication to responsibly manage the US-PRC relationship to avoid miscalculation and conflict".

Relations between the world's two largest economies have tanked in recent years over Taiwan, trade and human rights, among a litany of other issues.

A Beijing readout of the call struck a more confrontational tone, reporting that Mr Qin had warned that relations between the two countries had faced "new difficulties and challenges" since the beginning of the year.

"It's clear who is responsible," Foreign Minister Qin Gang said, according to the Chinese foreign ministry.

"China has always viewed and managed China-US relations in accordance with the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation put forward by President Xi Jinping," he added.

Another chance for dialogue

Presidents Joe Biden and Xi met in Bali in November and agreed to try to prevent tensions from soaring out of control, including by sending Blinken to Beijing.

But Mr Blinken abruptly cancelled a trip scheduled in early February after the United States said it detected and later shot down a Chinese surveillance balloon flying over the US mainland.

The two sides have more recently looked again to keep tensions in check, including with an extensive, closed-door meeting between Joe Biden's national security advisor, Jake Sullivan, and senior Chinese diplomat Wang Yi in Vienna last month.

President Biden has sought limited areas for cooperation with China, such as climate change, in contrast with the more fully adversarial position adopted at the end of the administration of his predecessor Donald Trump.

But two countries remain at deeply at odds over many issues.

The White House last week accused China of operating an intelligence unit in Cuba for years and upgrading it in 2019 in an effort to enhance its presence on the Caribbean island.

A base in Cuba, which lies 90 miles (150 kilometers) off Florida's southern tip, would be viewed in Washington as a direct challenge to the continental United States.

Asked about the base, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said he was "unaware of the situation" before criticising US policy on Cuba.

'Reason For Rahul Gandhi Ban': Congress Leader On Twitter Ex-CEO's Claim

Reacting to former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey's claim that there was 'pressure' from India to block accounts covering the farmers' protests, Congress leader KC Venugopal said today that the government wants to suppress the opposition's voice and that is why they banned Rahul Gandhi's Twitter account.

In an interview with the YouTube channel 'Breaking Points with Krystal and Saagar' on Monday, Mr Dorsey, who stepped down from Twitter's board last year, alleged that the Indian government had put pressure on Twitter and said that it will shut down the company in India and raid the houses of its employees.

"The statement of the Twitter CEO is totally alarming and shocking for all of us. The entire government machinery is pressuring the Twitter CEO to suppress and shut the opposition's voice. That is why they banned Rahul Gandhi's Twitter account," Mr Venugopal said.

"Where is the freedom of expression, freedom of media? They do this to suppress failure. We will raise the issue not only in Parliament, but we will also raise the issue throughout the country," he said.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee president Nana Patole also supported Mr Dorsey's claim that there was 'pressure' from India to block accounts covering the farmers' protests and said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) must have made such attempts.

"What the (former) Twitter CEO said is totally correct. When BJP came into power, media was not given the power to show the truth. Earlier also, the BBC launched a short film on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the central agency raided them. Yes, the government must have warned Twitter saying that if they report against us, we will raid departments of Twitter in India".

"We know that the BJP uses central agencies. Twitter is not lying but this government is telling lies and they must have used the central agencies against them (Twitter, BBC)," he added.

In the interview, Mr Dorsey said, "India is one of the countries which had many requests around farmers' protests, around particular journalists who were critical of the government and it manifested in ways such as we will shut Twitter down in India."

"India is a big marketplace for us. We would raid the homes of your employees, which they did and we will shut down your offices if you don't follow suit and this is India, a democratic country," Mr Dorsey added.

In November 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the repeal of the three Central farm laws. In his address to the nation, PM Modi had said, "Today I want to tell everyone that we have decided to repeal all three farm laws."

Farmers had staged a protest in large numbers against the government's three farm laws since the Centre passed the laws in 2020.

Delhi To Bring One-Time Settlement Plan For Consumers With Water Bill Dues

The Delhi government will bring a one-time settlement scheme for the water bills of 11.7 lakh domestic consumers who have arrears, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced on Tuesday.

Addressing a press conference at the Delhi Secretariat, Mr Kejriwal said the government plans to implement the scheme from August 1 and the consumers will receive the corrected bills after that.

"There has been a severe accumulation of water bills. During the COVID-19 pandemic, meter readings could not be taken. Meter readers filed false readings and therefore, people received the wrong bills. There are 27.6 lakh domestic meters in Delhi and of these, 11.7 lakh bills have arrears and have not been submitted. The arrears are to the tune of Rs 5,737 crore," he said.

Explaining the scheme, the chief minister said it will be divided into two sub-heads -- one will cover those who have two or more correct readings and the other will cover those who have one or no correct meter reading.

"Had we gone about correcting every bill, it would have taken us more than 100 years to rectify those. Through this scheme, we will settle the bills of 11.7 lakh consumers. In fact, of these 11.7 lakh consumers, seven lakh will get zero bills following the implementation of the scheme," he said.

Mr Kejriwal said the scheme has been approved by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) and will come to the cabinet soon. After the implementation of the scheme, the consumers will be given three months to pay the bills.

"If they fail to pay the bills within the three months, they will have to pay the bills with arrears," Mr Kejriwal said.

He added that the government is taking steps to stop wrong meter readings.

Man Who Claims To Work Over 16 Hours A Day Seeks Health Advice, Doctor Says...

A 37-year-old man who works more than 16-17 hours a day at a corporate job recently contacted a doctor on Twitter because he was concerned about his blood pressure. The man, who goes by the name Harshal on the micro-blogging site, sought health advice from Dr Sudhir Kumar, a neurologist from Apollo Hospitals in Hyderabad.

"Hi Doctor, I am 37 yo, in corporate job, current working hours from the past 6 months are more than 16-17 hours, have to give non-stop coverage for all global regions, I recently did BP check, and it's 150/90 and 84 min. Please advise next steps," Mr Harshal tweeted.

In response to this,  Dr Kumar recommended the Twitter user to "reduce working hours by 50 percent". He also jokingly asked him to ensure that an unemployed person, whose job Mr Harshal was doing in addition to him, gets a job.

"Reduce working hours by 50 percent, and ensure an unemployed person gets a job (whose job you are doing in addition to yours)," the doctor said.

In the following tweet, Mr Harshal thanked the doctor for the advice. He also revealed that he had to finally quit his job because he was told to work during the weekend as well.

"Thank you for the suggestion, I have quit the job now because it was getting very toxic at the top. Left at my best high because I told my boss I can't be available on a weekend and then she said, she will have to find a replacement then, quit immediately after it (sic)," he wrote.

Dr Kumar hailed Mr Harshal's resignation as a "great decision". "Thank you. Need blessings from all over to start something new," Mr Harshal tweeted.

Now, this Twitter conversation between Mr Harshal and Dr Sudhir Kumar has gone viral on the micro-blogging site. Internet users empathised with Mr Harshal's situation.

"Must not have been an easy decision at all. Hope u find something that's probably something u feel enthused about, every day," wrote one user.

"Escape corporate stress, reconnect with mother nature, and earn from organic farming. Combine technology and ancient wisdom for a fulfilling journey in agriculture. Explore the potential of organic farming by combining cutting-edge technologies with ancient wisdom," commented another.

"@HarshalSal67 16-17 hours of continuous work is not due to work pressure but it is the result of bad planning, bad management and bad resourcing!! And this  sets the bad culture for others in the company too!! Start saying NO!! Things will change!!" wrote another user.
