Biden By His Side PM Recalls 1st Time He Saw White House "From Outside"

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on his first state visit to the US, arrived at the White House today to a grand welcome. He thanked Biden for the warm welcome and said, "The grand welcome at the White House is an honour and pride for the 140 crore Indians. This is also an honour for the Indian community in the US".

During his address, the Prime Minister also recalled the first time he saw the White House during his visit to the United States 30 years ago.

"Nearly three decades ago, I visited America as a common man. I saw the White House from the outside back then," he said.

After becoming the Prime Minister, I have come here many times. But, this is for the first time, doors have been opened for the Indian community here in such large numbers," PM Modi said amid cheers from the crowd gathered on the South Lawn of the White House.

PM Modi and Biden also had a one-on-one meeting in the Oval Office of the White House before delegation-level talks.

In his remarks at the ceremony, PM Modi said he will soon hold talks with Biden and discuss regional and global issues: "I am sure our talks will be positive."

During his address, President Biden described the relationship between the US and India is one of the most defining relationships in the 21st century.

This would be the second interaction between the two leaders within 24 hours.

President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden hosted Prime Minister Modi for an intimate dinner at the White House a day earlier during which they discussed a range of issues, exchanged gifts and enjoyed a musical tribute to the regions of India.

Later Thursday, they will host a State Dinner, which is expected to be attended by 400 guests.

PM Modi's visit also includes an address by him to the joint session of the US Congress.

"This afternoon, I will have the opportunity to address the US Congress for the 2nd time. I am thankful for that," he said.

The Prime Minister arrived in Washington from New York where he led a historic event at the UN headquarters earlier in the day to commemorate the 9th International Day of Yoga, attended by UN officials, diplomats and prominent personalities.

He is visiting the US from June 21-24 at the invitation of President Biden and the First Lady.

22 Indian Fishermen Arrested For Allegedly Poaching In Sri Lankan Waters

The Sri Lankan Navy has arrested 22 Indian fishermen on board four trawlers for allegedly poaching in the country's territorial waters northwest of Delft Island, Jaffna, officials said on Thursday.

"The Sri Lanka Navy conducted a special operation to chase away Indian trawlers engaged in illegal fishing in Sri Lankan waters late on Wednesday", a statement by Lanka Navy said.

The fishermen from Tamil Nadu, reportedly hailing from Ramanathapuram, Pudukottai and Nagapattinam districts, were picked up from near Neduntheevu late on Wednesday, and four boats were also seized, it said.

They were later taken to Kankesanthurai harbour and handed over to the Mailadi Fisheries Inspector for further legal action.

The Navy conducts regular patrols and operations in Sri Lankan waters to curb illegal fishing practices of foreign fishing trawlers.

Dr S Ramadoss, founder of the political party Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) in Tamil Nadu, has slammed the arrest of the fishermen from the state by the Sri Lankan Navy.

In a tweet, he said an Indo-Lanka joint panel formed to discuss various matters, including the fishermen issue, should be convened immediately to find a lasting solution to the apprehension of Indian fishers.

The fishermen issue is a contentious one in the ties between India and Sri Lanka, with the Lankan Navy personnel even firing at Indian fishermen in the Palk Strait and seizing their boats in several alleged incidents of illegally entering Sri Lankan's territorial waters.

The Palk Strait, which is a narrow strip of water separating Tamil Nadu from Sri Lanka, is a rich fishing ground for fishermen from both countries.

There have been periodic instances of Indian fishermen being apprehended by Sri Lankan authorities for allegedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line and fishing in Sri Lankan waters.

Illegal fishing in the Sri Lankan waters by Indian fishermen has been a recurrent problem despite many high-level talks held between the two sides.

Cash-Strapped Pakistan To Lease Part Of Karachi Port To UAE For $220 Million

AD Ports Group of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) signed an agreement Thursday to take over the running of part of Pakistan's main Karachi docking facility in a deal worth an immediate $220 million, the company said.

The deal will come as a shot in the arm for Pakistan, with the economy on the brink of collapse and the government desperate for big-ticket foreign investment to help service crippling debt.

AD Ports Group has formed a joint venture with another UAE company, Kaheel Terminals, to take over berths from Karachi Port Trust (KPT), the state-owned handling agency.

Karachi Port is Pakistan's oldest and busiest, with 33 berths, and the UAE deal will see the joint venture lease four of them for the next 50 years.

"The JV will undertake significant investments in infrastructure and superstructure over the next 10 years," an AD Group statement said.

Plans include deepening the berths to allow for bigger ships to dock, extending the quay wall, and increasing the container storage area. As a result, the terminal will be able to handle ships capable of carrying up to 8,500 containers, and capacity will increase from 750,000 to a million containers a year, the statement said.

The bulk of development is planned for 2026.

The UAE is a major contributor to Pakistan's economy in the form of grants, loans and direct investment, and has previously bailed out a government that for months has been on the brink of defaulting on its debt.

US Judges Sets August 14 As Trial Date For Trump In Secret Documents Case

Federal Judge Aileen Cannon has set an initial trial date of August 14 for former President Donald Trump's Florida documents case, according to a court order on Tuesday.

The Justice Department's special counsel in the case, Jack Smith, promised a speedy trial after a 37-count indictment charging Trump with will-fully retaining classified government records and obstructing justice.

But the complexities of handling highly classified evidence, the degree to which Trump's legal team challenges the government's pre-trial motions, and the way the judge manages the schedule could all lead to a trial that is anything but swift, legal experts say.

The latest order came after a US judge on Monday ordered Trump's defense lawyers not to release evidence in the classified documents case to the media or the public, according to a court filing.

The order from U.S. Magistrate Judge Bruce Reinhart also put strict conditions on Trump's access to the materials.

"'Adipurush' A Foreign Conspiracy Against Hinduism": Ayodhya Seers

Seers in Ayodhya demanded an immediate ban on "Adipurush" saying its dialogues made their "blood boil" as different parts of Uttar Pradesh witnessed protests against the film on Monday.

A group of people staged a protest in Varanasi and tore posters of the film and the Hindu Mahasabha lodged a complaint with the Lucknow police against its makers and actors. A Hindu outfit also staged a protest outside a theatre in the temple town of Mathura.

Joining the chorus against the film, the Samajwadi Party said the faithful are hurt by its "cheap and superficial dialogues" and that the film was part of an "agenda".

"Adipurush", a retelling of the epic Ramayana directed by Om Raut, was released on Friday. It has been panned over its colloquial dialogues and controversial depiction of some characters.

Seers in Ayodhya, believed to be the birthplace of Lord Ram, alleged that the film was made as part of a foreign conspiracy against Hinduism and its culture.

Acharya Satyendra Das, the chief priest of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, said, "The film's dialogues make our blood boil. The film should be banned immediately. The government should ensure that this does not happen again."

He alleged, "Inke paatro mein, Ram, Hanuman aur Sita ko Muslim paatra ki tarah dikhaya gaya hai. Yeh jaanbujhkar kiya gaya hai (In the movie, the characters of Ram, Hanuman and Sita have been shown as Muslim characters. It has been done intentionally)."

Mahant Ram Das, the chief priest of the Hanumangarhi temple in Ayodhya, alleged that the film was made under a "foreign conspiracy against Hindu religion and culture".

"The dialogues delivered by the characters playing Lord Ram, Lord Hanuman and Goddess Sita will destroy the ideal culture of Ramayana. We urge the Centre that the film should be banned immediately. A religious film, before being cleared, should be reviewed by Hindu religious leaders," he said.

Protesting against the film in Varanasi, activists of a Hindu outfit tore its posters and appealed to people not to watch it.

The activists gathered at a temple and marched to a mall in the Sigra area, raising slogans against the film.

They demanded that its screening be stopped and tried to enter the mall, but were stopped by police.

The protesters said the film "mocks our religion and we are not going to tolerate it at any cost. The film must be banned in Uttar Pradesh." In state capital Lucknow, office-bearers of the Hindu Mahasabha lodged a complaint at Hazratganj police station and demanded that a case be registered against the actors, producer and director of the film. They said the film has "insulted" the religion, Lord Ram, Goddess Sita and Lord Hanuman.

"The illustration in the film, the costume worn by the artistes, dialogues and choice of words are wrong. They have also portrayed the real Ramayan in a wrong manner," according to the complaint filed by Hindu Mahasabha spokesperson Shishir Chaturvedi.

A case is yet to be registered in this connection, police said.

"Police have received the complaint and the matter is being investigated. A case has not been registered in this matter yet," Assistant Commissioner of Police Arvind Kumar Verma told PTI.

In Mathura, Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha activists staged a protest outside a cinema in the Govind Nagar police station area and raised slogans against the film.

Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha national treasurer Dinesh Sharma said that through the film's dialogues, an attempt has been made to tarnish the image of the Sanatan culture and this has caused "immense pain to us."

Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav said the Censor Board should check the "political character certificate" of those who play with the faith of people by making films with an agenda using the money of their political masters.

"Has the Censor Board become Dhritarashtra?" he asked in a tweet. Dhritarashtra, the father of the Kauravas, was a blind king in the epic Mahabharata.

Another Samajwadi Party leader, Shivpal Yadav, alleged that efforts are being made to belittle the great and inspiring character of Lord Ram and his story through cinema with "cheap and superficial dialogues".

"Crores of Sanatani believers are hurt. For this act, the so-called 'sanatani' BJP people should tender an apology to the country...do not defame Lord Ram," he tweeted in Hindi.
