Kerala Received 65% Deficit Rainfall So Far During Monsoon: Weather Office

Kerala, the gateway of the monsoon into the mainland of the country, has received deficient rainfall so far, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The southwest monsoon arrived in Kerala on June 8, nearly a week after its normal onset date of June 1.

Compared to the normal south-west monsoon rainfall for the corresponding period, Kerala has had a deficit of 65 per cent from the normal rainfall.

The regional meteorological department, Kerala, however, said that the south-westerly winds are getting stronger, and more rainfall is expected in the coming days.

"We have received only minus 65 per cent rainfall in Kerala. All the districts in Kerala have received below-normal rainfall this season so far," Dr VK Mini, director in charge, IMD, Kerala, told Press Trust of India.

She said due to various factors, like the cyclones that formed over the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, the south-west monsoon had a slow pick-up and slow progression.

"The pick-up started only last week. Now we are witnessing a faster progression. So we expect more rain in the coming days," she said.

There is an upper air cyclonic formation over the northeast Arabian Sea, and an offshore trough is moving towards Kerala from South of Gujarat, strengthening the south-westerly winds.

A low pressure area that formed over the Bay of Bengal two days ago is now over Chhattisgarh and moving towards the west, north-west direction. All these factors are strengthening the monsoon south-westerly winds," Dr Mini said.

Widespread rainfall is predicted over Kerala and Lakshadweep for the coming days, she added.

"UK Prepared For A Range Of Scenarios In Russia": Rishi Sunak

Britain is prepared for a range of scenarios in Russia, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said on Monday, noting the potentially destabilising impact of the tensions between the Wagner Group and President Vladimir Putin.

Putin faced an unprecedented challenge to his authority over the weekend from an abortive mutiny by heavily armed mercenary fighters from the Wagner Group.

The extraordinary events left governments, both friendly and hostile to Russia, groping for answers to what could happen next in the country with the world's largest nuclear arsenal.

Rishi Sunak said Britain was monitoring events carefully.

"It's too early to predict with certainty what the consequences of this might be, but of course we are prepared as we always would be for a range of scenarios," Rishi Sunak told reporters.

"It's a situation that we've been analysing and monitoring for some time because we're aware of the potentially destabilising impact of Russia's illegal war in Ukraine and indeed, the tensions between the Wagner Group and the Putin regime."

Teen Who Lost Legs After Being Hit By Car Is Suing US City

A teenage volleyball player from Tennessee, US, who lost both of her legs after she was hit by a car is suing the Missouri city of St.Louis and two drivers. A lawsuit was filed on behalf of Janae Edmondson, 18, on Tuesday, according to People.

Ms Edmondson was walking to a hotel in downtown St Louis with her family when an unthinkable accident occurred. A driver drove through a yield sign and struck a car and that car struck Janae Edmondson, according to Go Fund Me.

The driver responsible for the accident, 21-year-old Daniel Riley was arrested shortly after the incident. He was charged with three counts of assault. Authorities said Riley who was out on bond from another case, sped through a yield sign at the intersection and hit another car. The second car crashed into Edmondson, causing both of her legs to be amputated, Fox News reported.

The lawsuit states that Ms Edmondson "had her bright future brutally ripped away," and called the accident "completely preventable."

The lawsuit seeks damages of more than $25,00 from Riley, his mother, the city and the driver of the other vehicle. The suit says Riley's mother allowed him to borrow her car despite his "habitual recklessness," reported ABC News.

The lawsuit also blames the city for failing to maintain a safe intersection. It said that the yield sign that the lawsuit claims was inadequate because buildings blocked the view of oncoming traffic.

Mr Riley remains in jail as he awaits trials in his case.

Mumbai Waterlogged After Heavy Rain Traffic Hit On Some Roads

As Mumbai received its first heavy rainfall with the onset of monsoon, it led to waterlogging at various places, even as Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Sunday said the new system developed to prevent flooding in the city was functioning well.

The opposition parties, however, slammed the Chief Minister saying his claim of monsoon preparedness fell flat in the first rains and that all his "false promises, photo ops in Mumbai hold zero value."

In a startling revelation, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said it recovered a 165-litre fridge, a cupboard and other waste from a nullah near the Andheri subway that had to be shut for traffic on Saturday following the downpour and the rain water had to be pumped out.

Mumbai and its suburbs received heavy rains in the last 24 hours, resulting in waterlogging at various places and affecting vehicular movement on some roads, officials said on Sunday.

In a rare event, the monsoon on Sunday covered both Delhi and Mumbai together.

The Colaba observatory in Mumbai, representative of the island city, recorded 86 mm rainfall in the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 am on Sunday while the Santacruz weather station, representative of suburbs, registered 176.1 mm rainfall in the same period, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

Heavy rains affected vehicular movement on some roads in the city. Waterlogging in areas like Malad and Andheri slowed down the traffic further.

Mumbai is expected to receive more showers during the day, an IMD official said.

Mr Shinde on Sunday reviewed the functioning of an underground water tank installed at the Milan subway here to prevent flooding and said the system was working.

Milan subway, Hindmata and a couple of other locations in Mumbai are prone to water-logging during rains every year.

The BMC has constructed underground water tanks in these areas to prevent flooding.

Speaking to reporters, Mr Shinde said, "I personally came to review the situation at the Milan subway and the new system has proved that it works. More than 70 mm rainfall was reported in one hour, and still the system that we have developed has worked."

"Despite such excessive rain, the Milan subway remained open for vehicular movement. Similar systems are functional in other areas of Mumbai also," he said.

The Chief Minister also ordered the BMC officials to undertake measures to avoid water-logging resulting in disruption of vehicular movement during rains.

The civic body said it recovered a 165-litre fridge, a cupboard, rubber pipes and other waste from the Mogra nullah flowing near the Andheri subway. Due to this waste, the rainwater pumping machinery was blocked following heavy rains on Saturday, it said.

The Andheri subway had to be closed for traffic on Saturday during the rains and the civic machinery pumped out the rain water in an hour's time, it added.

Mumbai Congress president Varsha Gaikwad slammed the civic administration and the Shinde-led state government saying that all claims of monsoon preparedness fell flat in the first rains.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray tweeted a report in which Mr Shinde reportedly said that instead of criticising about water-logging, people should welcome rains.

"If shamelessness, incompetence and corruption had a face...It's disgraceful for him to rebuke Mumbaikars for complaining about waterlogging and the collapse of civic machinery yesterday. All his false promises, photo ops in Mumbai hold zero value," Mr Thackeray said on Twitter.

He also said there was a "vacuum of political and administrative leadership" to hear the issues of Mumbaikars.

"Where is the Municipal Commissioner/Administrator? Hasn't been heard/ seen yesterday or today. All these years, we've seen municipal commissioners on the roads, during monsoons. Missing now!" MR Thackeray said.

This is what happens when people who want to loot Mumbai, get governance in their hand by treachery, the Worli MLA said.

56-Year-Old Millionaire Fails China's Toughest Exam For 27th Time

After failing to achieve a high enough score on China's dreaded college entry exam for the 27th time, 56-year-old Liang Shi is beginning to wonder if he will ever make it to his dream university.

Mr Shi, a self-made millionaire, has taken the gruelling "gaokao" exam dozens of times over the past four decades, hoping to earn a place at top-tier Sichuan University and fulfil his ambition of becoming "an intellectual".

By most measures, Liang has had a successful life -- he worked his way up from a menial job on a factory floor to establishing his own construction materials business, making millions of yuan in the process, but his university dreams have so far eluded him.

In his quest for a prestigious higher education, he has put in 12-hour study days, abstained from drinking and playing mahjong, and endured the media mocking him as the "gaokao holdout", as well as online suspicion that it is all a publicity stunt.

But despite months of living like "an ascetic monk", this year Liang was 34 points short of the provincial baseline for getting into any university.

"Before I got the result, I had a feeling that I wouldn't be able to get a high enough score to enter an elite university," he told AFP.

"But I didn't expect to not make it into the ordinary ones."

Shortly before 10 pm Friday -- along with hundreds of thousands of high-school students across southwestern Sichuan province -- the grey-haired businessman carefully typed in his exam identification information and nervously waited to find out how he'd done.

Several local media reporters live streaming the scene were also avidly checking for updates -- and from their disappointed expressions, Liang knew before he even saw the screen himself that the result was not ideal.

"It's all done for again this year," he said to himself. "It's very regrettable."

In the past, Liang's repeated misses failed to deter him.

Every time he fell short, he vowed to try again the next year.

Now, for the first time in decades, he is wondering if his hard work will ever lead to anything.

"If I truly can't see much hope for improvement, there is no point doing it again. I really did work very hard every day," he said tiredly.

"It's hard to say whether I will keep on preparing for the gaokao next year," he admitted.

But a life without gaokao preparation is almost unthinkable to him.

"It's a hard decision to make. I am not willing to give up either," he mused.

"(If I were to) stop taking the gaokao, every cup of tea I drank for the rest of my life would taste of regret."

India-US Drone Deal Will Bring Nations To India's Doorstep: Ex-Bureaucrat

Describing the defence agreements signed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's US visit as "historic", former defence secretary Ajay Kumar said several countries using 'Predator' drones are likely to come to India for maintenance and overhauling.

India and the US inked a USD3 billion deal for 31 High Altitude Long Endurance (HALE) UAVs, of which the Navy will get 15 SeaGuardian drones, while the Army and the Indian Air Force will get eight each of the land version - SkyGuardian.

A joint statement by the two countries affirmed that these cutting-edge drones would be assembled in India, significantly augmenting the intelligence, surveillance, and target acquisition capabilities of the Indian armed forces.

"When the US sells such advanced equipment, they never agree to any manufacturing outside the country. But in this particular case, it has said that the Predator drones will be assembled here and a full MRO hub for these drones will be set up as well," Kumar said.

A full Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) means throughout the entire life cycle of these drones, their maintenance will be done in India, he added.

Emphasizing the significance of the General Atomics MQ-9B High-Altitude Long Endurance (HALE) UAVs, Kumar said countries such as the UK, France, Italy, Japan, Australia and Spain operate the MQ-9 system.

"Since Predators are a platform which other countries are also using, we can expect that in the future, some of the Predators from other countries will come for maintenance, repair and overhaul to India," he said.

On an MoU between General Electric and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the GE414 fighter jet engines, the former secretary said the production of aero engines has been an area of deficiency for India and this agreement will prove to be a significant milestone towards the country's goal of developing its own jet engines.

"As regards the GE414 engines being manufactured in India with large-scale value addition, I think this is a historic moment. Aero-engine is one area where India has had a deficiency in the past and this is a major landmark in our journey to create our own aero engines and I think this is therefore, truly historic," Kumar said.

Protesting Wrestler Shares Letter To Ministry Amid Asian Games Trials Row

Wrestler Vinesh Phogat on Sunday made public a letter that some of the protesting wrestlers had written to the sports ministry, requesting the extension of the dates for trials for the Asian Games as well as the World Championships later this year.

Vinesh shared a picture of the letter - which mentions no date - on social media on Sunday which mentions six wrestlers requesting for some extra time for training ahead of the trials.

The wrestlers have been protesting against the outgoing president of the Wrestling Federation of India, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh over allegations of sexual harassment since the start of the year.

The ad-hoc panel of the Indian Olympic Association's (IOA) had earlier exempted the protesting wrestlers from taking part in the trials, which was heavily criticised by coaches and parents of the other wrestlers including Yogeshwar Dutt.

The ad-hoc panel had also requested the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) to extend the date of submission for entries by one month, from its last date of July 15.

The undated letter, addressed to sports minister Anurag Thakur, reads, "It is requested to you that due to their participation in the wrestlers' protest, the below-mentioned wrestlers need some additional time to prepare for the trials for the Asian Games and the World Championships."

The request to be awarded time to train for the trials was made for protesting wrestlers Bajrang Punia (65kg), Sakshi Malik (62kg), her husband Satyawart Kadian (97kg), Sangeeta Phogat (57kg), Jitender Kumar (86kg) and Vinesh (53kg) herself.

"Hence it is a request to you that trials must be held for these wrestlers after August 10, 2023," the letter, signed by all six wrestlers mentioned, added.

Along with sharing the letter, Vinesh wrote on her Twitter page, "The protesting wrestlers had only requested to postpone the date of the trials, since due to our participation in the protests for the last six months, we did not get enough time for practice.

"We understand that this is a serious matter, which is why we are sharing this letter with you. The enemy is trying to break the unity among the wrestlers, we cannot let them have success," Vinesh added.

Ever Imagined How Powerful Jet Blast Is? Watch This Viral Video

Have you ever thought about the potential power of an aeroplane engine? Tremendous amounts of aviation fuel combined with strong mechanics result in immense power.

On social media recently, a video demonstrating the force of jet engines and depicting people being thrown from their feet by the force went viral.

The video, shared by a Twitter account called "Callum Hodgson", shows around 20-30 people standing casually near an aircraft and taking videos of it roaming next to the runway boundary.

"Here's a small preview of the absolute chaos that occurs when people underestimate the power of aircraft engines!" the user wrote in the caption.

The video further showed that a powerful air current came from the plane's engines as it took off and forced a few people to fall down as others tried to maintain their footing.

What is Jet Blast?

According to the Aviation File, a blog dedicated to all things aviation, jet blast is the effect created by the thrust force that comes out of the back of the engines of jet-powered aircraft. The effect may vary depending on the type of aircraft and the conditions or environment (runway length, departure procedure, etc.). The jet blast effect may increase, especially for heavy-caliber aircraft and high-performance takeoff situations.
