Paytm CEO Raises Concern After OpenAI's Blog On 'Human Extinction'. Read His Post
Paytm CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma has raised concerns after a blog post by ChatGPT creator OpenAI. The blog post expressed the inability to have a solution for controlling a superintelligent AI and preventing it from going rogue. It also said that superintelligent AI can lead to disempowerment and even possibly human extinction.
Vijay Shekhar Sharma tweeted, " Here is the OpenAI blog post done this week: In less than 7 years we have a system that may lead to the disempowerment of humanity and even human extinction. I am genuinely concerned with the power some set of people and select countries have accumulated - already."
The OpenAI blog post said: "Superintelligence will be the most impactful technology humanity has ever invented and could help us solve many of the world's most important problems. But the vast power of superintelligence could also be very dangerous and could lead to the disempowerment of humanity or even human extinction. While superintelligence seems far off now, we believe it could arrive this decade."

In less than 7 years we have system that may lead to disempowerment of humanity => even human extinction. ?

Superintelligent AI - systems more intelligent than humans - could arrive this decade, the blog post's authors predicted. Humans will need better techniques than currently available to be able to control the superintelligent AI, hence the need for breakthroughs in so-called "alignment research," which focuses on ensuring AI remains beneficial to humans, according to the authors.
OpenAI, backed by Microsoft, is dedicating 20 per cent of the computing power it has secured over the next four years to solve this problem, they wrote. In addition, the company is forming a new team that will organise around this effort, called the Superalignment team.
The team's goal is to create a "human-level" AI alignment researcher, and then scale it through vast amounts of compute power. OpenAI says that means they will train AI systems using human feedback, train AI systems to assist human evaluation, and then finally train AI systems to actually do the alignment research.
AI safety advocates Connor Leahy said the plan was fundamentally flawed because the initial human-level AI could run amok and wreak havoc before it could be compelled to solve AI safety problems.
"You have to solve alignment before you build human-level intelligence, otherwise by default, you won't control it," he said in an interview. "I personally do not think this is a particularly good or safe plan."
The potential dangers of AI have been top of mind for both AI researchers and the general public. In April, a group of AI industry leaders and experts signed an open letter calling for a six-month pause in developing systems more powerful than OpenAI's GPT-4, citing potential risks to society. A May Reuters/Ipsos poll found that more than two-thirds of Americans are concerned about the possible negative effects of AI and 61 percent believe it could threaten civilisation.

Video: Road At Delhi Minister Atishi's House Flooded BJP Takes A Swipe
The road in front of the official residence of Delhi minister Atishi was flooded after two days of heavy rain. Visuals show the water entered the property's front area behind the gate.
Atishi, the Public Works Department (PWD) Minister, had been going on rounds of the city to meet engineers and inspect flooded areas.
"Rain has broken the record of decades. Due to such a torrential rain, Ring Road near ITO is flooded despite having a pumping station," Atishi tweeted in Hindi.
बारिश ने दशकों का रिकॉर्ड तोड़ दिया है। इतनी मूसलाधार बारिश के कारण पंपिंग स्टेशन होने के बावजूद रिंग-रोड पर ITO के पास पानी भर गया है।

She said she has asked engineers to increase the number of pumps to drain out a larger volume water faster from the area.
Heavy rain bettered Delhi for two days. The weather office said it was the highest 24-hour rainfall in the national capital in 40 years.
Delhi BJP chief Virendraa Sachdeva tweeted many areas in the city were flooded due to poor infrastructure development under the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
"Corruption in the Kejriwal government is so rampant that the bungalow of PWD Minister Atishi on the recently renovated Mathura Road has been submerged," Mr Sachdeva tweeted along with a video that shows the front area of Atishi's home.

3 Killed After Car Hit By Landslide Falls Into Ganga In Uttarakhand
Three people were killed and three others were missing after a vehicle hit by a landslide fell into the Ganga River in Tehri Garhwal district on Sunday, officials said.
The vehicle was carrying 11 people, including the driver, police said, adding five of them were rescued and admitted to a government hospital in Rishikesh. They were on their way to Rishikesh from Kedarnath.
Personnel of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local police have reached the spot and a rescue and relief operation is underway, Inspector Ritesh Shah, in-charge of Muni Ki Reti Police Station said.
Inspector Kavendra Sajwan of the SDRF said three bodies have been fished out from the river while a team of divers is conducting an operation to find the other passengers.
The victims were residents of Delhi, Bihar, and Hyderabad, he said.
According to police, the accident took place in the Muni Ki Reti area on the Rishikesh-Badrinath National Highway.
The driver lost control of the car after it was hit by a landslide. It then skidded off the road and fell into the Ganga River, Shah said Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has urged people to be vigilant because of landslides due to heavy rains and overflowing rivers.
Due to bad weather and excessive rainfall, incidents of landslides, road closures and overflowing rivers and streams were reported. Instructions were given to all district magistrates and the Disaster Management Department to remain alert, he said.
The chief minister also urged pilgrims visiting the state to plan their travel only after getting the latest weather information to avoid any inconvenience.

Biden Begins 3-Nation Tour With Focus On NATO Summit 1st Stop London
US President Joe Biden departed on Sunday on a three-nation trip that will be dominated by a NATO summit in Lithuania aimed at showing solidarity with Ukraine in its fight against Russia while not yet accepting Kyiv as a member of the alliance.
Biden's first stop will be in London, where he will meet British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak at 10 Downing Street on Monday and then travel to Windsor Castle for a visit with King Charles.
The talks with the king, expected to include climate initiatives, will give Biden a greater sense of the man who succeeded his mother, Queen Elizabeth, who died last September.
Biden had tea with the queen at Windsor in June 2021 and they discussed many of the same issues that remain a top priority today, like Russia and China.
Biden will travel on to Vilnius, Lithuania, on Monday night and hold talks with NATO leaders there on Tuesday and Wednesday. Biden and the allies aim to show support for Ukraine and give Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy a sense of what he will have to do to gain NATO membership at some point in the future.
In a CNN interview previewing his trip, Biden urged caution for now on Ukraine's drive to join NATO, saying the alliance could get drawn into the war with Russia due to NATO's mutual defense pact.
"I don't think there is unanimity in NATO about whether or not to bring Ukraine into the NATO family now, at this moment, in the middle of a war," Biden said.
A centerpiece of Biden's visit to Lithuania will be a speech that he will deliver at Vilnius University on Wednesday night.
White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters the speech will cover Biden's vision of "a strong, confident America flanked by strong, confident allies and partners taking on the significant challenges of our time, from Russia's aggression in Ukraine to the climate crisis."
One of Biden's objectives on the trip is to show Americans back home the importance of continuing support for Ukraine as he faces re-election. Some of his Republican rivals in the race for the November 2024 presidential elections have voiced doubts about his strategy.
Solid majorities of Americans support providing weaponry to Ukraine to defend itself against Russia and believe that such aid demonstrates to China and other US rivals a will to protect US interests and allies, according to a Reuters/Ipsos survey late last month.
Biden's last stop will be in Helsinki for talks with the leaders of the newest NATO member, Finland, and to attend a summit of US and Nordic leaders.

Bullied Indian-Origin Employee Gets 2.3 Million Pounds From Royal Mail
In what is believed to be one of the largest compensation settlements for the UK's Royal Mail, an Indian-origin employee has been awarded more than 2.3 million pounds after her bullying claim was upheld.
Kam Jhuti had claimed before an employment tribunal dating back nearly eight years that she had been intimidated and harassed by her boss after she raised concerns that a colleague had secured their bonus illegitimately.
The tribunal went on to find that there had been a “catastrophic” impact on her over her boss' treatment of her, ‘The Daily Telegraph' reports.
“The tribunal makes a total award of GBP 2,365,614.13, payable by the respondent to the claimant,” reads an official remedy decision added to the long-running case this week.
“Subject to the paragraph below, payment of the award is stayed pending the outcome of the respondent's (Royal Mail) appeal against the tribunal's original judgment on remedies which was sent to the parties on October 3, 2022. Both parties have the liberty to apply to lift this stay,” it reads.
“Of that total award, the respondent (Royal Mail) will, however, make payment of the sum of 250,000 pounds gross to the claimant; the stay does not, therefore, apply in relation to this sum. The parties agreed that the respondent will pay this sum to the claimant within 14 days of the date of this hearing,” it adds.
Earlier, the tribunal had concluded that the postal service had been “high-handed, malicious, insulting and oppressive” in how it had conducted the case.
A 2019 Supreme Court hearing was told that Jhuti started work as a 50,000 pounds per year media specialist at the Royal Mail's MarketReach unit based in London in September 2013.
However, the following month, while shadowing a colleague, she began to suspect they were not following watchdog Ofcom's guidance and also breaching the company's policy in relation to bonuses known as Tailor-Made Incentives (TMIs), which she said helped the colleague to hit performance targets and directly securing a bonus for herself and “in effect defrauding the company”, the newspaper reports.
Later that month, a TMI expert in the business confirmed Jhuti's previous allegations had been correct by acknowledging that media specialists were offering TMIs “inappropriately”.
As the process unfolded, Jhuti began suffering from stress and went on to express concern over her boss's conduct.
She was granted a new line manager but was told she was not making the expected progress and in March 2014 was signed off with work-related stress, anxiety and depression, and never returned to work.
After taking Royal Mail to an initial employment tribunal in 2015, Jhuti's claims of unfair dismissal proceeded after the Supreme Court ruled in her favour.
As an appeal is pending in the case, the Royal Mail is expected to only make a payment of 250,000 pounds from the total compensation amount at this stage.

Vladimir Putin's Personal Armoured Train Is Equipped With Gym Salon And Movie Theatre. See Pics
Inside pictures of Russian President Vladimir Putin's luxurious armoured train have been made public in a news report from a website that does in-depth reporting on those linked to the Kremlin.
According to the investigative website Dossier Center, the train has a personal beauty salon, a medical suite, and even a gym with cutting-edge equipment, including a step platform and a hyperextension machine.

The train has a 3.75 million-pound hammam, which has a "fancy shower," complete with an "aroma foam" setting. The train is also equipped with anti-aging equipment, a lung ventilator, a defibrillator, and a patient monitor that measures factors like pulse and temperature.

The news report stated there are 22 carriages for the president in the train, which are divided into several restaurants, garages, salons, and sports and recreation places for Mr Putin.

As per a report by The Independent, Amidst Russia's war in Ukraine, Mr Putin appears to be using the train more. The Dossier Center previously quoted an unnamed source close to the presidential administration who said Mr Putin has used the train increasingly since 2021 as it cannot be tracked in the same way as planes.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin emerged from last month's Wagner mutiny looking weakened, despite defusing the immediate threat, according to analysts.
The short-lived and ultimately aborted revolt by Yevgeny Prigozhin's mercenary force marked the most dramatic challenge ever to Putin's rule.
The Belarus-brokered deal to halt Wagner's march toward Moscow saw off a major clash, yet now that agreement seems to be in question.
Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko said Thursday that Prigozhin was in Russia and thus not in the Belarusian exile called for in the deal.

Wagner Chief Still In Russia Says Belarus President
Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin is still in Russia, Belarus's president said Thursday, raising questions about the deal to end the mercenary leader's mutiny last month.
Rescue workers meanwhile were clawing through rubble in the UNESCO-protected western Ukrainian city of Lviv, which was hit by a Russian missile early Thursday that killed four and injured dozens more.
Belarus leader Alexander Lukashenko mediated a deal to end Prigozhin's revolt -- the most serious challenge to Russian President Vladimir Putin's rule -- that was to see the mercenary head into Belarusian exile.
"As far as Prigozhin is concerned, he is in Saint Petersburg... He is not in Belarus," Lukashenko, who has ruled isolated Belarus for nearly three decades, told reporters from foreign media outlets in Minsk.
Speaking in the presidential palace, Lukashenko said he knew "for sure" that Prigozhin was a free man, adding: "I spoke to him on the phone yesterday".
The Kremlin replied by saying it was "not following" Prigozhin's movements, nearly two weeks after the June 23 mutiny that saw armed fighters on the march toward Moscow.
Lukashenko said that members of Prigozhin's Wagner mercenary group have not established a base in Belarus yet, despite an offer from the Kremlin for those who took part in the failed mutiny to do so.
"At the moment the question of their transfer and set-up has not been decided," Lukashenko said.
Images broadcast by Russian media on Wednesday showed police entering Prigozhin's residence, a vast and luxurious mansion with a helicopter parked in the grounds, reportedly on June 25.
- 'Vicious' attack -
Lukashenko's comments came hours after what Lviv's mayor said was the biggest attack on civilian infrastructure in the city since the start of the Russian invasion last February.
While Russia regularly pounds Ukraine with missiles, artillery and drones, the Lviv region in the west, hundreds of kilometres from the frontlines and near the Polish border, has largely been spared the aerial onslaughts.
The US embassy in Ukraine described the attack as "vicious" and said in a tweet that "Russia's repeated attacks on civilians are absolutely horrifying."
"We will not stand by and will continue to strengthen Ukraine's ability to defend itself," it added.
Interior Minister Igor Klymenko wrote on Telegram that the missiles had struck a residential building.
"The 3rd and 4th floors in two sections of the house were destroyed," he said.
At least four people had been killed in the attack and 32 were wounded, including a child, the emergency services said later, updating an initial toll.
The attack came as President Volodymyr Zelensky, who vowed a tangible response to the strike, arrived for an official visit in Bulgaria, a major ammunition producer and supporter.
- 'Ceiling started to fall' -
Rescuers were working to reach those still trapped, and AFP footage showed emergency responders clearing rubble and wood from the gutted first floor of a building in Lviv.
Cars covered in dust and with their windows blown out lined a pavement piled with debris.
One elderly woman carried a cage with a bird inside away from the scene.
"I woke up from the first explosion, but we didn't have time to leave the apartment," Olya, 37, told AFP.
"There was a second explosion, the ceiling started to fall, my mother was immediately hit," she said.
"I got to the window, started screaming, and in about half an hour the rescuers got to me, took me out and took me to the 8th hospital," Olya added.
"I came back and found out that my mother had died, my neighbours had died. At this point, it seems that I was the only one who survived from the fourth floor. It's a miracle."
More than 50 apartments were "ruined" and a dormitory at Lviv Polytechnic University was damaged, Mayor Andriy Sadovyi posted on Telegram.
An office building had been damaged and a school building had been destroyed, he said, later announcing two official days of mourning.
Zelensky said on social media that "Russian terrorists" were responsible for the destruction, adding: "There will definitely be a response to the enemy. A tangible one."
- 'Sorting through debris' -
On June 20, Lviv was hit by a major Russian drone assault that also targeted other cities including Kyiv.
Ukraine has recently bolstered its air defence systems with Western-supplied weapons and the number of Russian missiles and drones breaking through has diminished.
But the spokesman for Ukraine's air force, Yuriy Ignat, recently said that newly supplied systems were still insufficient to cover the whole country.
Slow weapons deliveries to Ukraine delayed Kyiv's planned counteroffensive, allowing Russia to bolster its defences in occupied areas, Zelensky said in a TV interview broadcast Wednesday.
"Our slowed-down counteroffensive is happening due to certain difficulties in the battlefield. Everything is heavily mined there," he told CNN via a translator in the pre-taped interview.
Zelensky announced his arrival in Bulgaria on social media saying he had plans to meet with his counterpart Rumen Radev and Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov.
