'Valatty - Tale Of Tails': A Unique Love Story Of 2 Dogs

Romcom movies have long been a source of comfort, a go-to genre for whenever one needs a dose of happiness. There's a new romcom all set to hit theatres, but, with a pawsome twist. New film from Kerala, Valatty is a love story of two dogs, brought up in contrasting cultural conditions.

Valatty - Tale of Tails is the story of two dogs Tomy and Amalu, who fall in love, despite the religious differences of their owners. While one of the owners is vegetarian, brought up in a Palakkad Iyer family, the other enjoys his meat. As a result of this friction, the dogs decide to elope as their love transcends their owner's culinary taste differences.

While making the film, the film-maker says the attempt was to avoid assigning any nativity to the dogs or the characters so it could be more universal. Even the vehicles carry DW (Dogs World) in the number plate.

Actor-producer Vijay Babu of Friday Film House, who has financed the film, says Valatty is a 'first-of-its-kind' Indian film and took 3 and a half years to make. He tells NDTV that the puppies were adopted and trained according to the script. The shoot took over 100 days followed by a year of post-production work.

The film has minimal use of animation and has majorly been shot with real dogs. "The expressions- sad, angry, happy, smiling, all are real. Only where there is dialogue in close-up, animation has been used for about 15 minutes in the film," Vijay Babu told NDTV.

The male lead Tomy is played by a Golden Retriever, the female lead by a cocker spaniel and the antagonist by a Rottweiler. The film also features a country dog that plays the hero's friend. The film-maker atells NDTV that the dogs have now been adopted by loving families.

The 'experimental' film, written and directed by debutant filmmaker Devan, features 11 dogs and a rooster. The film also touches upon the issue of stray dogs which is now a sensitive subject in Kerala, after recent incidents of cases of attacks by strays.

The film will release in five Indian languages- Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi. The dubbing for the lead characters has been done by well-known voices in different languages. Roshan Mathew has given voice to the lead hero Tomy and Raveena Ravi has voiced the female lead Amalu in all south Indian languages.

Notable Malayalam actors, including Soubin Shahir, Indrans, Sunny Wayne, Saiju Kurup, Aju Varghese, Ranjini Haridas, Mahima Nambiar and others have lent their voices to the animal cast. Valatty has Vishnu Panicker as the cinematographer and Ayoob Khan as the editor. Music is composed by Varun Sunil.

The Malayalam and Kannada versions of the film are set to be released on July 21. The Hindi, Tamil and Telugu versions will hit the theatres on July 28. Dil Raju releases the Telugu version, Anil Thadani the Hindi version, Bengaluru-based Hombale of KGF and Kantara fame, KRG is doing the Kannada version and holds worldwide release rights.

Opinion: Opinion: In Opposition's Unity Fumble Maharashtra Bihar Are Exhibit A

Five years ago, around this time, the UPA or United Progressive Alliance was still alive and possible permutations and combinations of opposition unity were discussed on various forums. The question central to their theme of uprooting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the ruling BJP was, what would happen in Uttar Pradesh, where the BJP had swept the 2014 Lok Sabha election by winning 73 of 80 seats.

Almost everyone in the anti-Modi grouping hoped against hope - if only Mayawati's Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) and Mulayam Singh Yadav's Samajwadi Party could come together, they thought, it would be endgame for Modi. Their wishes came true and more; not just Samajwadi Party and BSP but Ajit Singh's RLD joined that Gathbandhan (grand coalition). The Congress was the hidden partner, as both SP and BSP announced they wouldn't put up any candidate in Amethi and Raebareli against Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi. The Congress was to return the favour in some seats.

The protagonists and supporters of that Gathbandhan, as also of the UPA, dug up an old slogan of the 1990s, "Mile Mulayam Kanshi Ram Hawa Me Udd Gaye Jai Shri Ram (if Mulayam Singh Yadav and Kashi Ram join hands, they can beat Jai Shri Ram)" to try and score a psychological victory over the BJP and its support base. Of course, none really cared to tell the full story of how the two parties faired in the subsequent assembly elections.

Similarly in Karnataka, the Congress and Janata Dal (Secular), which had formed a government together, tied up for the parliamentary polls.

Both formidable opposition combos - in India's most populous state and in the only southern state where the BJP had a strong presence.

Amit Shah, the then BJP president, had then famously said his party was fighting for over 50 per cent votes in each constituency and had expressed confidence in victory.

We know what happened in 2024. In UP, the BJP won 62 seats, and two more by its ally; Rahul Gandhi suffered a humiliating defeat in his constituency Amethi and Sonia Gandhi managed to win, with a lesser margin. In Karnataka, the BJP won 25 of 28 seats.

This time around, no one is talking about the prospects of opposition alliances in UP, the state which sends over a seventh of the total MPs to Lok Sabha. The Congress's first family is showing no signs of any attempt to reclaim Amethi. There is no signal yet of whether Sonia Gandhi will contest from Raebareli or pass on the baton to Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. They know it won't be easy.

There is no talk even about Bengal, which has the third largest (42) seats in Lok Sabha. The BJP put up an impressive show in 2019 and emerged as the opposition in the Bengal assembly. Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress are the ones talking the most, but the chorus of the BJP being a non-entity - as was said often in the run-up to 2014 - is missing.

Instead, for the 2024 elections, the spotlight is on Maharashtra and Bihar, the second and fourth largest in terms of number of seats (48 and 40).

This is not to say that elections in other states are not as important, for every single seat counts. But there is no disputing the fact that in terms of wider popular attention, narrative formation and media hype, some states grab more prominence than the others.

In the 2019 election, the BJP and Shiv Sena alliance won 41 of 48 seats in a repeat of the 2014 results. In Bihar, the BJP, along with its ally Janata Dal (United) and Lok Janshakti Party, won 39 of 40 seats. Lalu Yadav's party RJD was wiped out and the Congress could manage only one seat.

With the RJD-JD(U)-Congress, along with three other parties, coming together, the opposition has, at least on paper, a very formidable alliance against the BJP and its prospective allies.

In Maharashtra, the Maha Vikas Agadi coalition against the BJP also seemed to be rock solid for 2024.

It is worth noting that elections, like any other fight, are fought on a twin strategy - one, a psychological war against the opponent before and during the actual fight and second, ground realities. It has been repeatedly proved that ground realities are entirely different from what leaders of rival political formations try to project. Remember Nitish Kumar's famed statement of 2014 on the prospects of BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi? 'Blower ki Hawa', he sneered. In fact, Nitish Kumar was swept away in that election by a Modi gust.

The speed at which realities have shifted in the past year, to the benefit of the BJP and to the detriment of the opposition coalition, has stunned everyone. First, it was the Eknath Shinde-led rebellion that not only ousted the Maha Vikas Aghadi from power but also virtually crippled Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena. Then it was the turn of NCP supremo and the so-called Chanakya of politics, Sharad Pawar, to be thwacked by an identical coup. His nephew Ajit Pawar and close associates Praful Patel and Chhagan Bhujbal led a revolt against his daughter Supriya Sule becoming their ultimate Boss. Just how much appetite Pawar has left to rebuild his party, and take on Modi, is anybody's guess.

Nitish Kumar had, while campaigning for the 2020 Bihar election, declared that it would be his last election. He tried to play the emotional card but people didn't buy it, and his JD(U) was reduced to party number three in the assembly. It's a different matter that the BJP still made him Chief Minister and he continues to be the same, with the support of the RJD and the Congress. The question is - will the people of Bihar, with Nitish Kumar's credibility in tatters, vote for an opposition coalition to make him Prime Minister of India? That too when Nitish's party, in a seven-party coalition, wouldn't get more than 14 or 15 seats to fight.

But then, as of now, Maharashtra and Bihar are getting all the attention. Which explains why Union Minister Nityanand Rai meeting with Chirag Paswan was such big news.

In Himachal Nearly Submerged Temple Emblematic Of Destruction - And Hope

A nearly submerged temple in Himachal Pradesh, with floodwater swirling around its spire, has become almost emblematic of the destruction wrought on the state by incessant rain, which has battered it for over two weeks now.

Over 30 people have died in the state and there has been damage worth over Rs 3,000 crore. But when the sun came out today, visuals of water receding around the Mahadev Temple in Mandi served as a ray of hope to many.

While footage from yesterday showed even the main, bigger spire close to being engulfed by the floodwater, the entire temple could be seen in all its glory today, with the water flowing below its base.

An immediate cause of the situation getting as bad as it did over the past few days in Mandi and surrounding areas is obvious - unchecked construction around the Beas river, which has constricted the area available for it to flow and ensured that the river has to carry additional debris in case of landslides.

These factors make the river change course and enter houses in low-lying areas and along its banks, leaving a trail of destruction in its path.

An orange (second-highest level) alert has been sounded for Mandi and surrounding areas today. Authorities have, however, told NDTV that the expectation is that the intensity of the rainfall will be less than what it was yesterday.

Of the 30 people who have died in Himachal, Shimla - which saw 11 deaths - reported the highest number of casualties. Police said 29 of the 30 dead bodies have been identified.

Over 500 tourists have also been stranded in various parts of the state after rain-induced landslides cut off access to the areas.

Bureaucrat Shares Pic Of Rs 20 Refund After Cancelling Flight Ticket Internet Reacts

Indian Administrative Service officer, Rahul Kumar's recent tweet is gaining a lot of traction on social media. Mr Kumar cancelled his flight ticket and shared a screenshot of the refund he received.

Mr Kumar with a touch of sarcasm wrote, "Pls suggest some good investment plans for my refund."

The screenshot shows a paltry sum of Rs 20 on the flight ticket which he had booked for Rs 13,820. Mr Kumar paid the amount after getting a discount of Rs 1,138. The airline cancellation fee was Rs 11,800, the GI cancellation fee at Rs 1,200 and the convenience fee was Rs 800. Since the cancellation fee was Rs 13,800, Mr Kumar received just Rs 20.

See the post here:

The post soon went viral and received an array of reactions from internet users. Commenting on the post, Indian Forest Service officer Parveen Kaswan wrote, "With this kind of liquidity you will need extra security, sir."

A user suggested that he should, "Donate it to a charity and claim tax returns!"

Another user commented, "I don't process the refund in these cases. Let the seat get wasted .. rather than the airline selling it again to some other passenger."

"I m not very good at economics but can suggest for remaining huge amount which you can donate to some needy person, his/her blessings will certainly outperform any investment," the third user wrote.

Teachers Of Private Government Schools Entitled To Same Pay: Delhi Court

Teachers of unaided private schools are entitled to same pay and emoluments as their counterparts in government schools, the Delhi High Court has said.

The court made the remarks while rejecting a private school's plea challenging the directive of a single-judge bench of the high court to pay its teachers according to the Seventh Central Pay Commission.

The court observed that section 10 of the Delhi School Education Act provides that the scale of pay and allowances, medical facilities, pension, gratuity, provident fund and other prescribed benefits of a recognised private school shall not be less than those of the employees of the corresponding status in the government school.

It also noted that the Directorate of Education here in a notification on October 17, 2017, directed that all recognised schools shall implement the recommendations of the Seventh Central Pay Commission.

A bench of Justice Manmohan and Justice Mini Pushkarna said schools cannot evade their statutory responsibility and are bound to pay the statutory dues as per the law.

"It is the undisputed position of law that teachers of unaided private schools are entitled to the same pay and emoluments as those of government schools, in terms of the obligation enjoined upon the private recognized schools under the DSE (Delhi School Education) Act, 1973," said the court in its recent order.

"Consequently, this Court is of the view that the present appeal is bereft of merit. Accordingly, the present appeal and application are dismissed but with no order as to cost," it said.

Three teachers of the appellant school had approached the single-judge of the high court earlier after the benefit of the Seventh Central Pay Commission was not extended by the school.

The single-judge bench, in its judgement passed in December 2021, directed the school to grant benefits and salaries to the teachers under provisions of the Seventh Central Pay Commission and further held that they were entitled to arrears with effect from January 1, 2016.

Amid Heavy Rain Weather Office Issues Yellow Alert For Delhi

The India Meteorological Department on Monday issued a 'yellow alert' for the national capital while the Yamuna River in Delhi, which was flowing above warning level for hours, crossed the danger mark of 205.33 metres at 5 pm on Monday, the latest data from the flood control department said.

Moreover, Delhi Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj stated that the government is on alert mode and that is fully prepared to control the situation after the administration issued a flood alert following the release of a significant amount of water, totaling over one lakh cusecs, into the Yamuna River from the Hathnikund barrage by Haryana. Additionally, at 1 pm on Monday, 1,90,837 cusecs of water was released from the same barrage.

Roads in several parts of the capital were submerged in knee-deep water as it was inundated with 153 millimetres of rain, the highest precipitation in a single day in July in 40 years.

"Delhi government is on full alert. As the water will go above 206 metres, we will start shifting people, living on the banks. The process of taking them safely to the relief camp will be started. Earlier we were feeling that the water level would cross 205 meters on June 11, but it has crossed 205 meters today itself because more water is being released from Haryana," he told ANI.

According to the flood bulletin, the water level at the Old Railway Bridge increased 205.4 metres at 5 pm on Monday.

The water level in Yamuna is rising continuously as Haryana released more water into the river from the Hathnikund barrage amid rains across northwest India including the national capital.

IMD further stated that Delhi witnessed 16 cm of rainfall over the national capital after 41 years.

Speaking with ANI, IMD Senior Scientist Dr Soma Sen Roy said, "The interaction zone is being persisting for the last 3-4 days and the monsoon trough was earlier dipping into eastern and Bay of Bengal. The monsoon eastern has moved away from the Bay of Bengal, moisture from Bay of Bengal has seized, but from the Arabian Sea moisture has started to flow because a low-pressure system has formed. As this interaction is not a very common phenomenon, but when a westerly system and an easterly system interact and this interaction is relatively less common, but because of that after 41 years we have got around 16cm rainfall and on Sunday, we got more than 10cm rainfall over Delhi. Particularly for today also, we have given up to 12cm rainfall. It might be more. We are monitoring and we will keep you informed."

There is a yellow alert for Delhi today and if necessary we will upgrade the alert level as well as the rainfall warning based on the main region of interaction, Mr Roy added.

On warning, Mr Roy said, "For Delhi, we are issuing alerts at subdivision level or state level. From our meteorological centres, district-level warnings are being issued for the districts which are likely to be affected by flash floods, landslides, heavy rain and thunderstorm'.

Speaking about if it's common to witness such heavy rainfall that Delhi has been experiencing during monsoon, Mr Roy said, "Such rainfall may not have happened in Delhi, but it has happened in the past. It is not a very uncommon feature of monsoon whether easterly system or westerly system interact. Only this time it has happened after 41 years over Delhi. So, we are seeing this kind of intense spell over Delhi. If you remember, in 2013, the Uttarakhand episode, there was a low pressure system which moved from the Bay of Bengal and there was much deeper moisture coming in and that also interacted with westerly trough."

The Delhi Traffic Police issued a situation alert of water logging at several places, uprooting of trees, underpasses were inundated such as under the Minto bridge, the Pragati Maidan tunnel and the Kalindi Kunj underpass were flooded.

He also issued a warning for diseases and asked people to remain cautious and not to be adventurous and stay protected, follow the forecast.

Earlier today, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that there is no flood threat in Delhi due to the rise in water level of Yamuna, following two days of heavy rain in the national capital and adjoining areas.

Waterlogging issues were also observed in diplomatic enclaves such as Chanakyapuri, Kaka Nagar, Bharti Nagar, and other prominent roads and colonies under the jurisdiction of the NDMC.

Delhi Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj said that the government is in alert mode and that is fully prepared to control the situation.

Earlier in the day, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that there is no flood threat in Delhi due to the rise in the water level of Yamuna, following two days of heavy rain in the national capital and adjoining areas.

He also urged all political parties to refrain from blame games stating that it was not the time to "point fingers" at each other."A flood-like situation unlikely to arise in Delhi. Government is prepared to deal with any situation," he said addressing a press conference here after a meeting to review the city's handling of the heavy rainfall

.Kejriwal said, "It is not the time to point fingers and single out anybody." He added that evacuation of people from low-lying areas around Yamuna will commence once the river breaches the 206-metre mark. The IMD has issued an orange alert for today in the national capital.

Ahead of the review meeting today Delhi's Public Works Department (PWD) minister Atishi inspected the Yamuna River's water level.

The national capital recorded 153 mm of rainfall in 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on Sunday, the highest in a single day in July since 1982, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

Several parts of northwest India witnessed a heavy spell of rain with Delhi shattering a 41-year record on Sunday, IMD said.

'Survivor Syndrome': Ukraine Refugees Cope With Guilt Of Fleeing War

Ukrainian refugee Lana Lisetska has forgiven herself for "being saved" and is rebuilding her life thanks to a programme that tackles the often overlooked mental health struggles of people fleeing the war.

"For the first few months I was suffering from what they call 'Survivor Syndrome'," said Ms Lisetska, who fled to neighbouring Moldova with her seven-year-son just after the outbreak of the war more than a year ago.

"You know you are safe but inside you have this feeling of guilt, that you have betrayed your country and your parents."

Ms Lisetska, 32, left her husband and her friends behind to get her son to safety and is now living at a Moldovan refugee centre at Nisporeni close to the border with Romania. But she never took off her little heart pendant in the blue and yellow colours of her homeland.

She would burst into tears in the strangest of times and places, even when she was at the hairdresser. "There were people in Mariupol and in Bucha who had nothing to eat then" and here she was getting her hair cut, she remembered thinking.

But the "most terrible thing is when you learn to live with that" as if it were normal, she told AFP.

But thanks to help from psychologists from Doctors of the World, Ms Lisetska has got a job with a company handling hotel reservations.

You Suppress A Lot

Moldavia, which like neighbouring Ukraine was once part of the Soviet Union, is hosting more than 100,000 Ukrainian refugees -- a major challenge for a poor country of only 2.6 million people.

It has got support from some 40 major humanitarian organisations including Doctors of the World, which has made refugees' mental health problems a priority.

"It's a critical area where we can provide support," Liz Devine, its American-born general coordinator there told AFP.

"The thing about mental health as it doesn't always come out at first... It's kind of panic and fear in the early days," she added.

"You can suppress a lot and these issues can manifest themselves in different ways over the course of time."

Ms Devine said 86 percent of Ukrainian refugees in Moldova are women and children.

"That's an incredibly high ratio compared to what you'd find in other refugee" situations.

"The husbands, the brothers and the sons remain in Ukraine either to fight or to provide other support" for the war effort.

So feelings of being isolated and all alone are common. Even surrounded by pictures of her family back in Ukraine, Elena Bavyko felt that acutely. The photos are also a reminder of her ultimate goal -- to return home.

If she is doing better now, it is down to the psychological support she has received, she believed.

Art Therapy

"I discovered an absolutely new method in group sessions, where we could cry and talk about our problems together," the 23-year-old said.

"When you hear someone else's story, you understand that you are not alone in this, and it becomes easier," she added.

Ms Bavyko has since begun helping other Ukrainians who have fled with the NGO Acted.

Like Larissa Demcenco, a lawyer from Odesa who is now living in the Moldovan capital Chisinau with her 20-year-old daughter, she also found art therapy very useful.

"You paint and try to visualise your dreams," said Ms Demcenco, who has now got a job working with children.

"Our mission is now to go back to Ukraine and use these techniques with those who had stayed on and suffered there."

Most of the 686,000 Ukrainians who poured over the border into Moldova thought their stay there would be brief. Many moved on to other countries, or went home. But for those with no choice but to stay, the war dragging on has thrown up new problems.

Doctors of the World said many are "exhausted by not being able to predict what the future might bring", which for the most vulnerable can lead to "an endemic state of stress".

It is also trying to support overstretched frontline workers dealing with refugees using a programme called "Help the helpers" it developed in Lebanon.

"It is hard to watch what Ukrainian refugees are going through," said Moldovan Nadia Pascaru Botnaru, 41, the local head of the People In Need organisation.

"We ourselves are also living under the threat" of a Russian invasion. "You say to yourself, 'Maybe it will be us next.'"

"Can't Assume Woman Is Subservient To Her Husband": Delhi High Court

A wife is not a mere appendage of her husband and retains her individual entity and natural right to pursue her dreams and aspirations to be financially independent or do meaningful social work, the Delhi High Court has said.

Justice Najmi Waziri, while dealing with a petition by a landlord challenging the dismissal of his plea by a lower court for eviction of his tenant, also said it cannot be assumed that the wife is subservient to her husband and is obliged to disclose to or share with her husband details of all her finances.

"A wife is neither an appendage of nor an adjunct to her husband. Her identity does not merge with or get subsumed in her husband's identity. In law, she retains her individual entity. She retains her natural right to pursue her dreams, aspirations and the desire and need to be financially independent or otherwise do some meaningful social work," observed the court in a judgment on July 7.

"There cannot be an assumption that the wife is subservient to her husband and is obliged to disclose to or share with her husband details of all her financials," Justice Waziri said.

The petitioner landlord had sought eviction of the tenant from his shop in Sadar Bazar on the ground that his two married daughters were unemployed and wished to utilise the property for their commercial aspirations.

The eviction petition was dismissed by the lower court on several grounds including that the landlord's wife ran a hotel and he did not disclose aspects of this business, and that the daughters were well settled in their matrimonial life and had never worked before.

Directing the tenant to vacate the property, the court observed, "Idle luxuriation may not be the life-goal of many a woman or to be simply known as a rich man's wife" and under the law, a tenant can be evicted on the need of landlord's dependants which includes married daughters.

"There is a certain self-worth which a person acquires by running her or his own business/commercial enterprise, vocation and professional activity. This aspiration cannot be questioned in proceedings for eviction of a tenant on the ground of bonafide requirement of the tenanted premises," the court said.

"Ordinarily, for a daughter, irrespective of her matrimonial status, her paternal/maternal home is always a psychological, physical and emotional sanctuary, a place to which she can relate and return to freely, irrespective of how far she is geographically located from her parents. The law provides for eviction of a tenant on the need of dependants. Married daughters are included among dependents of their parents, for commercial/residential space," it added.

The court further observed that the status of financial well-being of a landlord or his wife and dependent children is not the test of bonafide requirement, and what was to be seen was whether there was a suitable alternative accommodation available with the landlord for him to use or for providing the same to his daughters.

The court opined in the present case, the landlord had established a case for eviction of the tenant as it noted, "The married daughters are dependent upon their father for space to start their business in Delhi. The dependency was not pleaded on the husbands. The petition is maintainable. The daughters' need continues, so does the need of the petitioner."

Cops Attach Gangster's Assets Worth Over Rs 17 Crore In Noida

Gautam Buddh Nagar police on Monday attached "ill-gotten properties" including houses and shops estimated to be worth over Rs 17 crore belonging to a gangster, officials said.

Gangster Amit Kasana, an active member of the Randeep Bhati gang, is involved in over three dozens cases of loot, extortion, abduction and murder, they said.

"The Gautam Buddh Nagar police commissioner (Laxmi Singh) had issued orders for attaching immovable properties belonging to Amit Kasana under provisions of Section 14 (1) of the Uttar Pradesh Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act," Additional DCP (Greater Noida) Ashok Kumar said.

"Today, in pursuance of the orders, a two-storey house located at Ristal village in Ghaziabad worth over Rs 3 crore and a house along with some shops in Asalatpur village in Ghaziabad worth over Rs 14 crore have been attached as per legal procedures," Kumar said.

The total value of the attached immovable properties is Rs 17.23 crore, according to the police.

Section 14 (1) of the Uttar Pradesh Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act allows for attachment of illegal properties in order to effectively curb gangsters, mafias and criminals and their associates.

Police warned of similar strict action against criminals in future for the purpose of curbing organised crime.

Paytm CEO Raises Concern After OpenAI's Blog On 'Human Extinction'. Read His Post

Paytm CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma has raised concerns after a blog post by ChatGPT creator OpenAI. The blog post expressed the inability to have a solution for controlling a superintelligent AI and preventing it from going rogue. It also said that superintelligent AI can lead to disempowerment and even possibly human extinction.

Vijay Shekhar Sharma tweeted, " Here is the OpenAI blog post done this week: In less than 7 years we have a system that may lead to the disempowerment of humanity and even human extinction. I am genuinely concerned with the power some set of people and select countries have accumulated - already."

The OpenAI blog post said: "Superintelligence will be the most impactful technology humanity has ever invented and could help us solve many of the world's most important problems. But the vast power of superintelligence could also be very dangerous and could lead to the disempowerment of humanity or even human extinction. While superintelligence seems far off now, we believe it could arrive this decade."

See the post here:

Superintelligent AI - systems more intelligent than humans - could arrive this decade, the blog post's authors predicted. Humans will need better techniques than currently available to be able to control the superintelligent AI, hence the need for breakthroughs in so-called "alignment research," which focuses on ensuring AI remains beneficial to humans, according to the authors.

OpenAI, backed by Microsoft, is dedicating 20 per cent of the computing power it has secured over the next four years to solve this problem, they wrote. In addition, the company is forming a new team that will organise around this effort, called the Superalignment team.

The team's goal is to create a "human-level" AI alignment researcher, and then scale it through vast amounts of compute power. OpenAI says that means they will train AI systems using human feedback, train AI systems to assist human evaluation, and then finally train AI systems to actually do the alignment research.

AI safety advocates Connor Leahy said the plan was fundamentally flawed because the initial human-level AI could run amok and wreak havoc before it could be compelled to solve AI safety problems.

"You have to solve alignment before you build human-level intelligence, otherwise by default, you won't control it," he said in an interview. "I personally do not think this is a particularly good or safe plan."

The potential dangers of AI have been top of mind for both AI researchers and the general public. In April, a group of AI industry leaders and experts signed an open letter calling for a six-month pause in developing systems more powerful than OpenAI's GPT-4, citing potential risks to society. A May Reuters/Ipsos poll found that more than two-thirds of Americans are concerned about the possible negative effects of AI and 61 percent believe it could threaten civilisation.

Video: Road At Delhi Minister Atishi's House Flooded BJP Takes A Swipe

The road in front of the official residence of Delhi minister Atishi was flooded after two days of heavy rain. Visuals show the water entered the property's front area behind the gate.

Atishi, the Public Works Department (PWD) Minister, had been going on rounds of the city to meet engineers and inspect flooded areas.

"Rain has broken the record of decades. Due to such a torrential rain, Ring Road near ITO is flooded despite having a pumping station," Atishi tweeted in Hindi.

She said she has asked engineers to increase the number of pumps to drain out a larger volume water faster from the area.

Heavy rain bettered Delhi for two days. The weather office said it was the highest 24-hour rainfall in the national capital in 40 years.

Delhi BJP chief Virendraa Sachdeva tweeted many areas in the city were flooded due to poor infrastructure development under the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

"Corruption in the Kejriwal government is so rampant that the bungalow of PWD Minister Atishi on the recently renovated Mathura Road has been submerged," Mr Sachdeva tweeted along with a video that shows the front area of Atishi's home.

Several residential areas in Delhi were flooded. Cars were seen submerged at many places too. Commuters complained of difficulty in reaching their destinations as water accumulated on the roads, especially under flyovers.
