BJP Names Ex Deputy Chief Minister As Rajya Sabha Candidate From UP

The BJP on Sunday named former Uttar Pradesh deputy chief minister Dinesh Sharma as its candidate for the September 15 by-election to a Rajya Sabha seat from the state.

The bypoll has been necessitated due to the death of incumbent MP Hardwar Dubey, who was also from the BJP. The term of the seat is till November 2026.

Speaking to PTI, Dinesh Sharma thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and other senior party leaders for the opportunity to be a member of the Upper House of Parliament.

"I will work for the party to ensure that Narendra Modi ji becomes the prime minister for the third time," Sharma, who is a member of the UP legislative council, said.

Mr Sharma's election is all but certain due to the strong majority the BJP enjoys in the state assembly. Like Dubey, he is also from the Brahmin community.

In the 403-member UP legislative assembly, the BJP has 255 MLAs, while its allies Apna Dal (Sonelal) and NISHAD party have 13 MLAs and six MLAs respectively. New NDA partner SBSP has 6 MLAs in the Assembly.

The SP has 108 MLAs and its ally Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) has nine MLAs. Congress and Jansatta Dal Loktantrik have two MLAs each, while the BSP has one MLA. One seat (Ghosi) is vacant.

Mr Sharma was one of the two deputy chief ministers in the first term of the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath-led government between 2017-22.

He held portfolios of secondary education, higher education, science and technology and IT and electronics.

After being replaced by Brajesh Pathak following the 2022 UP Assembly polls, Sharma had said that he will continue to strengthen the party to ensure that it emerges winner in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

"I will continue to work for the party and strengthen it. As a party worker, I will strive to ensure that the BJP emerges victorious in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections," Mr Sharma had earlier told PTI.

The 59-year-old leader has been a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party for long but emerged on the central stage of politics with his appointment as its National Vice President in August 2014 after the party's landslide victory in the parliamentary polls.

After he was made the in-charge of party affairs in Gujarat, his stature in the party grew immensely.

He was first elected as the Mayor of Lucknow in 2008. He stood for re-election in 2012 and defeated his nearest rival Neeraj Bora of the Congress (now a BJP MLA from Lucknow North) by over 1.71 lakh votes.

It was on his invitation that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had attended the Lucknow Ramlila in October 2016.

He also played a key role in the organisation (2014-15) during its membership drive when 10 crore new members were roped in.

Mr Sharma has also been a party observer to Haryana for electing its chief minister and to Rajasthan to elect the state BJP chief.

He was also the state chief of the UP Mayor Council from 2007 to March 18, 2017.

Hilarious Moment A Squirrel Interrupts US Open Women's Double Match

A US Open doubles match had to be brought to a standstill when an eager squirrel invaded the court. The hilarious moment happened during a second-round women's doubles match on Saturday night on Court 5, Greet Minnen and Yanina Wickmayer squared off against Laura Siegemund and Vera Zvonareva.

The squirrel interrupted the second set of a match. The video shows a squirrel running across the back of the court, distracting players. The cameras captured the squirrel who was trying to find its way out of the stadium, running quickly around the courtside seats.

"This match has seen a little bit of everything," one commentator said.

US Open Tennis posted a video of the moment and wrote, "A squirrel is quite a reason to replay a point."

"Poor thing. He looks scared," the third user wrote.

Minnen and Wickmayer won the first set 7-6 (7) in a tiebreaker, but Siegemund and Zvonareva, stormed back to win the second and third sets 6-2, 6-0, respectively.

Lamborghini Hits Railings On Mumbai Bridge, Ex MLA's Son Behind Wheels

A former BJP MLA's son allegedly rammed his Lamborghini Huracan into the railing of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link in Mumbai today.

Former Mira-Bhayander MLA Narendra Mehta's son Taksheel was driving towards Worli at 7.30 am when he lost control of the luxury vehicle and rammed the railing, the police said. The Lamborghini Huracan costs up to Rs 3.5 crore in India.

Taksheel suffered burns in his hand, the police said, adding no one else was injured.

Visuals of the accident show the orange Lamborghini's hood and the front grill had been ripped off by the force of the impact. The police said the airbags had deployed.

The Worli police have taken the damaged car to the police station.

A case of rash driving has been filed.

2 killed, 20 injured As Bus Skids Off Road, Overturns In Madhya Pradesh

A man and a five-year-old boy were killed and 20 others injured when a private bus skidded off the road and overturned in a bid to avoid hitting a motorcycle in Madhya Pradesh's Narsinghpur district on Saturday, police said.

The accident occurred on the bypass road of National Highway 26 around 5 pm, an official said.

The private bus carrying 44 passengers was heading towards Gadarwara area from Narsinghpur city when a motorcycle came in its way, Kotwali police station inspector Gaurav Chatte told PTI.

The bus driver veered away from the path to avoid hitting the two-wheeler, but he lost control of the vehicle, causing it to skid off the road and overturn just 5 km from the district headquarters, he said.

The police reached the scene and rescued people from the bus, the official said.

Pushpendra Vishwakarma, 25, and Devansh Jatav, 5, died on the spot, while 20 injured passengers are undergoing treatment at a hospital, he said.

A case has been registered in this regard and investigations are underway, he added.

Special Parliament Session To Be Held Between September 18-22

A session of both Houses of Parliament will be held from September 18-22 without Question Hour or private members' business, the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha secretariats said on Saturday.

The session will have five sittings and members will be informed about the provisional calendar separately, the secretariats said.

"Members are informed that the Thirteenth Session of the Seventeenth Lok Sabha will commence on Monday, the 18th September, 2023," the Lok Sabha Secretariat said in a bulletin on Saturday.

"Members are informed that the Two Hundred and Sixty First Session of the Rajya Sabha will commence on Monday, the 18th September, 2023," the Rajya Sabha secretariat said.

On Thursday, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi had announced a "special session" of Parliament for five days from September 18, but kept the agenda for it under wraps, triggering speculation.

"Amid Amrit Kaal, looking forward to having fruitful discussions and debate in Parliament," Mr Joshi said on X.

Generally, three parliamentary sessions are held in a year -- Budget, Monsoon and Winter sessions.

Sources had said the "special session" could see parliamentary operations being shifted to the new Parliament building which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 28.

A day later, it emerged that the government was setting up a high-level committee to examine and recommend simultaneous polls, adding to the speculation that the special session could be the last of the current Lok Sabha.

Arrangements being made for a group photo of MPs have added fuel to the fire though some people suggested it could be because of a possible shift to the new parliament building.
