Family Wanted In British Girl's Death On Way Back To UK: Pakistan Police

The British-Pakistani father of a 10-year-old girl found dead at her home in England last month was on a plane back to the UK with his partner and brother, Pakistan police said Wednesday, after the trio went on the run for weeks.

Sara Sharif's body was found in the southern UK town of Woking on August 10 and a post-mortem examination revealed she had suffered "multiple and extensive injuries" over a sustained period, British police said last month.

"We can confirm the three suspects in the case boarded a flight earlier and are on their way to the UK," Jhelum police spokesman Mudassar Khan told AFP, adding that they had voluntarily gone with the knowledge of authorities.

British police had previously said that Urfan Sharif, 41, his partner Beinash Batool, 29, and his brother Faisal Malik, 28, fled to Pakistan to take refuge with relatives before the girl's body was found, sparking an international manhunt.

"I confirm that they have not been arrested but they left voluntarily," Raja Haq Nawaz, a lawyer for Urfan Sharif's father, told AFP.

He said the three were on an Emirates flight that left from the Punjabi city of Sialkot.

Earlier this month, Sharif and Batool appeared in a video distributed to media, in which Batool said they were "willing to cooperate with UK authorities and fight our case in court".

"All of our family members have gone into hiding as everyone is scared for their safety," she said, alleging malpractice by the Pakistan police hunting them.

In the two-and-a-half-minute low-quality video there was little mention of Sara's death, which Batool said was an "incident".

Surrey police said the trio were thought to have flown to Islamabad on August 9, the day before Sara's body was found.

An early morning emergency call alerting officers to Sara's death was made from Pakistan by a man identifying himself as the father, detectives said.

Five children aged between one and 13 brought to Pakistan with the adults were discovered at the home of Urfan Sharif's father on Monday.

A magistrate placed the children into state protective services on Tuesday.

The house was otherwise empty, and the manhunt continued with Interpol and Britain's foreign ministry coordinating with authorities in Pakistan.

Man Sentenced To 20 Years In Jail For Raping 5-Year-Old Girl In Maharashtra

A court in Maharashtra's Thane district has sentenced a labourer to 20 years in jail after convicting him for raping a 5-year-old girl five years ago.

In her order on Tuesday, Additional Sessions Judge and Special Judge (POCSO) V V Virkar also imposed a fine of Rs 20,300 on the convict, Suraj Balu Mahanto (35).

Special Public Prosecutor Rekha Hiwrale told the court that Mahanto in September 2018 kidnapped the child from near her house and raped her. A case was registered against him under the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The judge noted that the prosecution had successfully proved the charges against the accused and said he needed to be convicted under Section 376 (AB), which carried a minimum punishment of 20 years, and POCSO Act and sentenced.

"Since punishment provided for the offence under section 376(AB) of the IPC is greater in degree as compared to the punishment provided for the offences under POCSO, he is sentenced only for the offence punishable under section 376(AB) of the IPC," the court said.

"Not Bothered Even If You Die": Supreme Court To SpiceJet Chief Over Dues

The Supreme Court has come down hard on SpiceJet Chairman and Managing Director Ajay Singh, warning him he will be sent to Tihar jail for non-compliance with its order on making payment to global investment bank and financial services firm Credit Suisse AG.

The top court asked Mr Singh to pay $ 5,00,000 towards an instalment to the Swiss firm along with USD 1 million defaulted amount.

"We have to move to the next drastic step. We are not worried even if you shut down," a bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Ahsanuddin Amanullah observed.

Irked over the "dilly-dally business", the bench told Mr Singh he will have to abide by the consent terms and warned, "We are not bothered even if you die. It is too much. We will send you to Tihar jail, if you do not pay." The court's fulmination came on Monday when it asked Mr Singh and the company secretary of SpecieJet to be present during the hearings and make the payment. It posted the matter for further hearing on September 22.

According to the Swiss firm, SpiceJet had availed the services of SR Technics, Switzerland, for maintenance, repair, and overhaul of aircraft engines, modules, components, assemblies, and parts, which were mandatory for its operations. An agreement for such services was entered into between SpiceJet and SR Technics on November 24, 2011 for 10 years. The terms of payments were also agreed upon.

SR Technics had given Credit Suisse the right to receive payments from SpiceJet for the services.

The Supreme Court had on July 25 given additional time to SpiceJet to make the payment to Credit Suisse as per the consent terms agreed upon by the two parties.

The top court was hearing a plea by the Swiss firm seeking initiation of contempt proceedings against Singh and SpiceJet over "a wilful and intentional disobedience" of court orders and failure to pay dues as per a settlement between the two sides.

On August 14, the bench while issuing contempt notices to Singh and SpiceJet had noted the submission of the Swiss firm that the court had granted indulgence and withdrawn the airline from liquidation only in view of the consent terms dated May 23, 2022 by which USD 500,000 was to be paid every month by the low cost carrier to the company from July 15, 2020.

"It was submitted that, though as of now more than 6.5 million US dollars has to be deposited, but only a little over 2 million US dollars has been deposited," the bench had noted the submission of counsel appearing for Credit Suisse in its August 14 order.

SpiceJet and Credit Suisse had told the Supreme Court on August 18, 2022 about the resolution of their financial dispute which led to the withdrawal of an appeal by the low-cost airline against a Madras High Court order for its winding up due to alleged non-payment of dues to the Swiss firm.

"There is a settlement which has taken place on May 23, 2022, as per the consent terms. In view of it, both the parties are satisfied with the settlement and want to withdraw the SLP (special leave petition) filed by the petitioner.

"Accordingly, the application is allowed," the top court had said in its order.

The court had directed the parties to abide by the consent terms.

On the appeal of SpiceJet, the top court had on January 28, 2022 stayed the publication of the winding up notice and the order directing the official liquidator attached to the Madras High Court to take over the assets of the low-cost airline.

It had also asked SpiceJet to resolve the financial dispute with the Swiss firm.

"Life Won't Be Same...": Morocco Earthquake Survivors Recall Unbearable Pain, Loss

After cheating death himself and escaping the rubble, Abdellah Aeet Bihi found his youngest son, aged four, alive but trapped after Morocco's earthquake.

The boy was still able to talk from under the rubble of their collapsed house.

"But I couldn't get to him," Bihi, 39, recalled in their village of Talat Nyacoub, destroyed by the Friday night quake.

On Monday the body of his son was finally freed, Bihi said, breaking into sobs.

The little one had died near his elder brother, aged 12.

"I saw the elder one, lifeless. I quickly realised that stones had landed on the top of his body."

Bihi, 39, said he had been hoping for a peaceful sleep "when the roof fell on top of us".

An amputee, Bihi uses a prosthesis on his left arm but lost it during the chaos.

Somehow, with help from neighbours, "I was able to extract my 10-year-old daughter and my wife" from the debris.

His eldest child, 14, also got out. "I don't know how," he recalled.

Along with his two boys, Bihi's parents also died in the quake which killed around 2,900 people.

"My tears don't dry. I want them to stop but the pain is stronger than anything," he said. His wife looked at him with silent sadness and wept.

What remains of the family has taken refuge at the entrance to their remote village in the Atlas mountains near the quake epicentre, south of Marrakesh.

Forever changed

Under olive trees, they share a rug with the family of Latifa Aeet Bizli.

The roof of her house also collapsed in the earthquake, but Bizli was able to save her youngsters, aged three, seven and 10, as well as her parents-in-law.

"Luckily we were upstairs. I got hold of my children and was able to get them out through a hole," recalled Bizli, whose husband was in another village at the time, and also survived.

"I went back while the earth was still shaking to get my parents-in-law out."

With the family safely outside, she took in the extent of the shocking devastation around her. All the homes were destroyed, including her sister's.

"She died with her husband and her two children. I couldn't do anything for her and am eaten up by remorse because of it. I still can't accept that they are no longer here," said Bizli, 30.

"Life will never be the same for us," she said, grateful that aid had arrived to help them survive in what was already a deprived village.

In a spirit of solidarity after the quake, many ordinary Moroccans have stepped in to deliver medicine, food, quilts and mattresses to stricken villages, as some people complained authorities were slow to act.

Another resident of Talat Nyacoub, Rachida Aeet Malek, feels lucky to be alive after spending six hours in the rubble of her home.

When the quake struck she was upstairs along with her two children, mother and two sisters -- one of them pregnant.

Only her nephew was downstairs, said Malek, who is in her 20s.

"Three of our neighbours got us out from under the debris," she said.

Malek was the last to be freed, she said, lying under a tree with her children.

Her sisters were hospitalised but she is unhurt, physically.

"I am still in shock. I can't describe the pain inside me since this drama. We came back from the edge of death."

Her nephew didn't.

Despite efforts to free his body, it remains trapped under the debris.

Assam "Exhausted" Power Resources: Chief Minister Amid Record Demand

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today said the state has nearly exhausted its power generation capacity from own sources with the huge spike in demand for electricity this year. The government, he said, is looking at options for meeting the extra power requirement and the situation has improved.

Replying to an adjournment motion on the power scenario on the first day of the autumn session of the state assembly, Mr Sarma said the state has witnessed a sudden increase in demand for electricity during peak hours.

"The peak hour demand was about 1,600 MW in 2018-19, it was at 1,800 MW in the next two years and reached 1,970 MW in 2022-23," he said.

"This is the first time the demand touched 2,500 MW. Even I do not know what happened, it is unprecedented. The state is anticipating the peak hour demand to reach 3,000 MW next year and 4,000 MW by the time his government's term ends in 2026,"  he added.

The Opposition has attacked the government over the issue.

Earlier, moving the adjournment motion, Congress MLA Bharat Chandra Narah said the government should procure power from an open source to meet the demand.

The government has money for various schemes, including crores for a plantation drive. It can use some of the money to ensure that the people get electricity during such hot conditions, he further alleged.

"In Assam, the peak hour production is 250 MW and our peak our demand is 2,500 MW, so in the adjournment motion, we pushed the government for increasing our own power production," said Independent MLA Akhil Gogoi.

The Chief Minister said  while the government is analysing the reasons for the sudden spike, "People's prosperity has contributed to it, along with increased business activities".
As more industries are preparing to open factories in the state, the demand will further increase and the government is preparing to meet it, he added.

The opposition Congress has also attacked the BJP.

"In 2014, the BJP had promised 24-hour power. Now in Assam in 24 hours, there are 24 times power cut and if you don't have money to purchase power, why are you spending over 4,000 crore on smart meters," said state  Congress chief Bhupen Borah.

The Chief Minister, however, clarified the issue in the in the adjournment motion.

"We have no more power generation capacity on our own unless we go for a coal-based plant in Margherita. But that is entangled in environmental issues and we have to look to protect our biodiversity as well," he said.

India-Saudi Start Discussions On Trading In National Currencies: Centre

Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Secretary (CPV & OIA), Ausaf Sayeed informed that India and Saudi have begun discussions on trading between both countries in national currencies and added that for this the proposals and consultations have been exchanged on Monday.

"The two sides have started discussing this. It is only at a discussion stage, that proposals and concept notes have been exchanged. The Saudi side is aware that we have worked out similar arrangements with other countries in the region. So, the discussions will be beginning or have already begun," Secretary Sayeed said.

In recent times, India has taken substantial steps to promote the usage of its national currency, the Indian rupee, in international transactions. Collaborating with banks from 22 different countries, India has established special rupee vostro accounts in domestic banks, facilitating trading in national currencies.

As India continues to expand its footprint in the global trade arena, the adoption of the LCS system with the UAE sets a precedent for innovative trade practices that can reshape the course of international commerce.

Banks from 18 countries have been permitted by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to open Special Vostro Rupee Accounts (SVRAs) for settling payments in Indian rupees, the government told the Rajya Sabha.

In response to a question from BJP's Sushil Kumar Modi, Union Minister of State for Finance Bhagwat Karad said SVRAs could be set up by banks of partner countries by approaching Authorised Dealer (AD) banks in India that may get permission from the RBI after the due procedure.

Earlier after the BRICS summit in Johannesburg, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said that discussions on trade settlements in national currency have been very positive within the BRICS framework.

India has recently started taking strong steps in trying to put structures in place before trade settlements in national currencies.

Secretary Kwatra also spoke on the India-Dirham rupee trade settlement mechanism with the United Arab Emirates.

"Most recently, a couple of months ago, we signed the India-Dirham rupee trade settlement mechanism with UAE. Now, India's trade with UAE is roughly 90 billion dollars, more or less balanced. It opens up a good opportunity for both India and the UAE to explore that space," he said.

Earlier, the President of the UAE and PM Modi on July 15 witnessed the exchange of MoUs between the Reserve Bank of India and UAE Central Bank for the establishment of a framework to promote the use of local currencies (INR-AED) for cross-border transactions and another one for the bilateral cooperation on interlinking their payment and messaging systems.

The signing of the Local currency settlement (LCS) agreement took place during the recent visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the UAE.
